    Man, young Murray had variety, wasn't afraid to volley, even hit aggressively occasionally. This is the game style that may have actually made him truly a big 4. Don't know why he changed to that total retriever style. I admit that style could beat most of the other players but this was probably a better way to play Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. He wasn't as predictable as his game later became

    • @HoangTruong-vk7ek
      @HoangTruong-vk7ek Год назад +2

      his h2h against the big4 would of been better if he plays like this but its higher variance, meaning he could sometimes lose to other players because its risky. On any given day where he's not hitting as good and making more unforced errors he would lose easily. His pusher style later on allows him to be consistent and running deep in almost all tournaments he plays. He was a like a wall and nobody could get past him. That defensive style tho could never survive against the big3 who has many tools to break him down. Still Andy Murray was one of the greats and regardless of what others say, it was always Big 4 in my opinion.

    I can kind of see why Federer made that comment where he said to Murray, after their Dubai match in 2008 - "I thought you were an aggressive player." Proceeded to comment how if Murray continued to play the way he played in that match, he was going to have a short career. That was Federer looking out for Murray at the time.

  • @BrotherTree1
    @BrotherTree1 4 года назад +12

    Federer's performance was very poor and erratic and didn't seem to find much inspiration and imagination. As a result, he was way too predictable and sluggish for whatever reason, and it was exploited... whilst Murray played very well in standing his ground on the baseline like a goalkeeper and relished the opportunity to compete and go for it. These differences matter in deciding outcomes in matches.

    Murray was good at coaxing federer into going for too much. He used to just extend the rallies and wait for federer to make errors. Murray, Simon, and canas used this style very well until federer gained more patience and waited for the right ball to attack. Back then federer was trying to end rallies way to fast.

      2 reasons I’d reckon: 1) the ATP (and WTA) has done a tremendous job marketing the game over the last 15 years. Extensive news coverage and building player brands has skyrocketed ticket sales. Look, even Sampras v. Becker was played in front of a half full crowd in the mid 90s. The sport has grown. 2006 was the tail end of the old era - hard courts were still single color, Nadal and Fed were just beginning to really heat up, etc. The tennis-knowing population was smaller in general 2) Southwest Ohio, middle America, end of summer, middle of the week, midday. We Americans are gearing up for school or finishing out summer vacations at beaches, not 2nd tier Midwest city with no exceptional identity to name. Always wondered how Cincy has remained relevant despite its marked blandness in contrast to other Masters 1000 cities (Paris, Rome, Shanghai, Miami, Monte Carlo...c’mon!)
