I am on to my second Golf R having owned a Mk 6R for 6 years. My current 7.5R is more comfortable with better performance than my previous one. Before purchasing I looked at the Mercedes, Honda and Porsche and decided on the R based on performance, comfort, reliability, practicality and value for money. The Golf 7.5R is a car that fills me with excitement and is a joy to drive.
I have the 7.5 golf r and I bought it 5 years ago brand new. And I put 62k miles in it and I haven't had single issue with my r. This car is amazing best investment I ever made
For someone who likes classic JDMs, particularly Subarus and Evos, I started understanding the appeal and liking these performance Golfs in recent years. The international car communities often pass off the Golf GTi and R as "mundane". But looking at the package as a whole, what else can you really get at this price point? Solid performance, decent practicality, good style while not being too flashy, and it's not the most unreliable car to maintain. It just makes sense for the casual car enthusiasts. Reality is, the coveted JDMs are fetching really high value, far more than most of us average people can afford. And although they have Japanese reliability, they're not exactly low maintenancel, and given the age of some of them, expect some repairs. If I want a practical performance car at this point, a relatively recent GTi is the more sensible option.
It's only a money magnet if it's owned by a negligent owner. Of course, don't expect Japanese bulletproof reliability, but these aren't the worst cars to maintain compared to certain other Euros.

My opinion, the R. Hands down
