  • It's so beyond exciting that TOTK is on the horizon, but at the same time I feel a bit conflicted about leaving BOTW behind after it has had such an enormous impact on me personally, as well as the larger gaming space.

Nothing is more irritating than hearing a girl talk about video games. Especially the “cozy” gamer girls, with Evee tattoos and Pikachu plushies. Unbearable cringe. No the game did not save your life. And of course you’re depressed because everyone on the Internet is.

This reminds me of my first encounter with a dragon! I had just climbed some mountains and arrived at the uppermost lake in the Necluda (?) region (might be accidentally swapping place names, but y’all should know the one), and was using cryonis to pull out a chest from the lake…then turned around to see this massive green head emerging, and I panicked thinking it was a random boss encounter 😂

    Yay!!
As a father myself. Fully understand putting gaming on hold. My kids are 17, 12, and 9 now. My 17 year old games and Breath of The Wild was the game that became her medicine after her mother died a few years before the game came out. Seeing my 11 year old at the time, pick up a controller, turn on the Wii U and just find herself in a open world, and find that curiosity shine through her head is something you never forget. Breath of the Wild helped her figure out something in herself and let the grief of death go. It’s definitely hard to watch her go to college with Tears of The Kingdom on her side making her mom proud as she expands her world at Stanford.

My Dad passed in 2016 and the Breath of the Wild hype kept me going thru losing him and two jobs back to back. Not to mention the countless hours lost playing the game.
The Zelda franchise has always been a big part of my life but "Zelda Wii U" and this iteration of Link, Zelda, and Hyrule, plus all of you in the Zelda community truly mean so much to me

Breath of the Wild was one the first games that I played truly ON MY OWN. I have four older brothers and we have always been very into the Zelda series. Every Zelda game I played was introduced to me by my brothers, until Breath of the Wild. I bought my switch and BOTW my Junior year of high school. I was struggling with the thought of my own mortality and life in general. BOTW was an escape for me that I greatly needed. I've played many open world games in my life, but no other game captured the magic of the open world experience like BOTW did.
I will never forget when I discovered that you can cook the hot peppers to get into the cold area in the Great Plateau. That was one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had. The sense of discovery was absolutely immense. I can't believe BOTW is 6 years old, time flies so quick. I'm a senior in college now and life is moving forward. BOTW helped me get through that tough time in my life and got me to where I am now.

Me myself I became a Zelda fan in 2013 so Breath of the Wild was the first Zelda game I was hyped for (Link Between Worlds came out before I was a superfan) and I remember checking the news everyday to see if there was new info. Needless to say the day the came out was the best day ever.

Hearing everyone's stories is absolutely lovely! BotW brought me to your community, Capt, and I am thankful for that every day! I'm also thankful for what the game did for me personally. It helped get me through college 🤣 Every break I was able to scrape up, I was playing BotW. It provided an escape from the day-to-day monotony and stress. The beauty of it was always so enchanting (and still is!). I remember just standing still watching the sunrise every single morning in Hyrule. Listening to the sounds, watching the wildlife. I sincerely believe that game gives us a hit of dopamine, because everything seems to feel better when I play it!
Even though it does feel like the end of an era, I don't think we'll forget about BotW. I guarantee you I'll be going back to it, perhaps once I beat TotK for the first time. It may even feel like a natural segue to go back to the beginning! :) But for now, we'll focus on TotK and give it the attention it deserves. BotW will always be there for us! :)

What a wonderful tribute to my absolute favorite Zelda game, a game that will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first Zelda game my kids played too. They since have gotten into the older Zelda games. Its really meaningful to me as a part of my own history with the Zelda series too... I already have so many wonderful memories playing every Zelda game since LttP and each one is special. But this is monumental in a way that is unique. The feeling I have when playing this game is something so unique I can't adequately explain it.

BotW was my first video game. It came out back when I was in Middle School and didn’t even like games yet. Most of the time, while I still play, I don’t even do the quests unless I literally stumble into them. I just ride and walk all over Hyrule. Can’t wait for TotK to get here.

Having grown up in a very anti-video game household, Breath of the Wild was the first game that really drew me in when I got my first console. It’s what got me into the series as a whole, and the reason I played Skyward Sword, Majora’s Mask, and want to acquire and play the rest of the series. My biggest fear with Tears of the Kingdom is that it will bring too satisfying an end to the series; but I know realistically that there will still be more LoZ game to look forward to in the future, even beyond the existing ones I have yet to play. Either way, I can’t wait to pour my every spare hour into exploring the map in TotK and seeing how things have changed from its predecessor.

When Breath of the Wild came out he was attached to my side the whole way, always reading the prompts for me in funny character voices, lol... It was the best, and those memories will never have an equal. We are so excited for Tears of the Kingdom. I share with him a love for Zelda that I couldn't with my wife, It's a special bond only him and I have in our family. Great video my man, you've actually evoked some serious emotions, made me tear up.

I was about to graduate high school when Breath of the Wild came out and I begged my mom for weeks to let me get a Switch with the game. Anytime I was down on life I’d just boot this game up and trot around the open fields of Hyrule on Epona to cheer myself up. The fact that I have gone through so many milestones since this game came out, being graduating college TWICE, getting my first job in my field and buying my first car, it feels a bit bittersweet going from Breath of the Wild to Tears of the Kingdom. I absolutely love this game and I’m so happy we get to play the sequel in less than a few days.

My mom passed away from cancer in October of 2019. She had always been a huge Zelda fan.
When I was younger we would hang out and she'd play while I watched and vice versa. If she had trouble on a part then I'd help her with it and if i had trouble she'd help me. We played games like Mario and stuff too but Zelda was our favorite.
It has a special place in my heart. She had played from the original LoZ all the way up to Twilight Princess, and even l all the handheld games, I think The Minish Cap was her favorite from those. Sadly by the time BOTW came out she was already very sick and we didn't have a Wii U or a Switch. I've played bits of BOTW on my friends switch and just recently got one (Zelda OLED ofc) to play TOtK when it's out. It's a shame she never got to play BOTW but I know she would have loved it. RIP to my best friend, Mom, and the best player 2 could have ever asked for. 🖤

This game will always hold a special place in my heart, honestly. I too had this kind of fear when thinking about TOTK. I kept wondering if replaying botw will ever feel the same as it used to.
I remember picking it up for the Wii U towards the end of 2017 and playing the heck out of it during the holidays. I hadn't played a Zelda title in a while, so botw completely blew me away! I had a lot of fun playing through the story while visiting the immensely vast land of Hyrule. It was just such a beautiful experience and it was also responsible for me going back to my "Zelda phase". I played Oot 3d, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword. I will miss this game, but nothing will hold me back from replaying it.

I came into Zelda a little later than most people. I first found out about it through Super Smash Bros. 64 and discovered Link. I thought he was cool and wanted to know more about him. Luckily my cousin had a copy of Majora's Mask he let me start a file on. I immediately fell in love with the series and began collecting the games and merchandise. Breath of the Wild was the first game I actively followed in its development. That's how I found RUclips and a larger Zelda community. I remember at midnight, picking up my Switch from work and then waiting for my collector's edition to arrive in the mail. In true Zelda tradition for me, my first death was a bit embarrassing. I immediately wanted to climb to the top of the Temple of Time, and in my haste I ran straight into a hole in the roof. I would stay up late into the night and into the early morning playing this game. I was always amazed at how much There's was to discover in the world. I'd spot something interesting off in the distance, go to it, and think it was time to get back on track before spotting something else to run towards. Even after playing through three times I was still discovering things for the first time I hadn't noticed before. There's a lot of memories tied to the game. Some good, some bad, but all worth it in the end. Though this particular journey may be over, we can look back and remember our time with this game fondly. However, we can't stay there, for we have to keep moving forward. When one adventure ends, another begins, and we as a community will walk it together. After all, as the old man in the cave said in the very beginning, "It's dangerous to go alone", and as we heard in the latest trailer, "but, you are not alone."

I never had a Wii U, and I couldn't afford a switch, but my best friend got the game, and we played together, and I got Phantom Hourglass because I wanted to play a Zelda game myself, and it sparked my love for Zelda. I put over a thousand hours into it in total, 100% completed it several times in standard, and a couple of times in MM. Just checked on my switch, and it's now 1245 hours. It is the best game of all time, IMO, and I've booked next Friday off work, so I can get my hands on TOTK while my youngest (13) is at school. Then I'll spend the evening watching her play it.

I think it shouldn't matter whether TOTK makes BOTW less or equally relevant given how long it's had to stand on its own. Might be more dissatisfying to newcomers of TOTK who didn't first play BOTW to then go back, but that's the reality they'll have to accept. I love this unique opportunity of BOTW fans being rewarded by catching the evolution of the gameplay, characters and world of this same Hyrule, to make it all feel even more real.

I played LOZ & LOZ II TAOL on NES as a child, I then played ALTTP on SNES, and OOT on N64, then life got in the way. I didn't even play MM, and missed every mainline game/console until BOTW, but I only starting playing BOTW when the OLED Switch came out and we bought one for my son. I have played other games on switch, but I always go back to BOTW, I've beaten it multiple times in regular & master mode, I've played it multiple ways from collecting everything, to collecting as little as possible, without the divine beats, without the master sword, and a myriad of other ways. I didn't get to play BOTW blind however, I knew in 2017 when it came out that I wanted to play it, but wouldn't be able to. I've preordered TOTK, when it arrives I am leaving work, getting off of the internet & staying away from any gameplay footage that comes out so I can play it blind as long as possible. The game leaked a couple weeks ago, and I've been avoiding the spoilers successfully so far, only watching the official released info from Nintendo; two more days, two more days.

Although there might be an equivalent (whatever those green swirls are above small buildings in the footage) So I'm pretty sure BOTW is going to retain unique mechanics not repeated...Hopefully. I bet Nintendo already considered many of the concerns voiced in this video.

I can relate to this video so much, I consider Zelda botw as my first ever “real” video game. I was like 16 at the time. I’ve of course played games before but they were little mobile games like subway surfers, jetpack joyride, pvz or clash of clans. I didn’t have a console, my parents were very strict. I have never thought of playing a console or pc game before that. But one day, a student of my dad came to visit, she had brought a brand new nintendo switch with her and gifted it to me as thanks to my father. My dad was furious and I wasn’t allowed to open the box until told to. I resisted for a week but i cracked. I booted up the console and put zelda in it, I had no idea what to except from it, never heard of zelda or any games like it. The experience was magical, I was discovering a new world. I may repeat myself but this was THE FIRST GAME I HAVE EVER TOUCHED, i wasn’t familiar with the controls, moving and hitting 2 buttons without looking at the controller was hard for me. I discovered later that walking while pressing B made me run and stuff like that. I hid under the table in my dad’s office to play the game, everyday after school I couldn’t wait to discover what more things I could do, I remember discovering the fishing village after like 100 hours spend on the game or discovering that there were towers across the map that gave me acces to the map info, (yes I played for 100 hours without the map installed on my slate.) Don’t make fun of me I had no epic gamer instincts lol. I remember my first naboris fight and all of that. Sorry I made u read my story but all I want to say is that i’m glad this was my first real gaming experience and that made me discover a whole new world.

I feel like I have a similar story, but from different point of view. First off, I've never actually completed a Zelda game before because I'm not a gamer, my husband is. Through the years we were dating and the first few years of marriage, I used to watch him play Zelda all the time. It was our favourite game series. In 2011, our son was born so when BOTW came out, he was 6 years old. We talked about Zelda a lot so he was anticipating it almost as much as we were. On the day the game came out, my husband had to work, but my son convinced me to give the game a try. I said I would play for a little bit, but warned him that I'm not a gamer, so we'd probably only get through the first 30 mins of game play and then we'd wait for my hubby to get home and watch him play.... 7 hours later, I had completed the Great Plateau, had met with Impa, found half a dozen Korok seeds, and even slain my first talus. I figured out the cooking mechanics, got the warm doublet and so many other things, and I did it all on my own. I've never played a game before that let me figure things out on my own like that. The controls felt so intuitive to me (which I've heard is not the case for most gamers because they compare them to other games and I didn't have much experience with other games). It was just such an amazing experience for me. I can't wait to jump into TOTK!
My son has since played much of BOTW on his own and is also looking forward to TOTK. The only problem is figuring out how we're all going to play without spoiling each other (and we all also want to watch each other play for the first time... so we're going to have to find a way of recording each other play... probably by recording with cell phones)

I’m in the same boat. Super mario bros and a link to the past. I remember being too young to really beat the games so I would make my mom play and I’d yell at her for screwing up lol. Ocarina of Time was the first game I could actually play and beat alone. I obviously went back and played a link to the past by myself and beat it.
Zelda is now giving me the opportunity to bond with my sons over a treasured game. My 2 year old gets so excited when I play. He squeals with joy and comes to sit next to me. He loves the Koroks and mimics their sounds when you find them. I hope this game continues into the future so that my sons and I can play with my grandchildren.

Yeah, it's going to be hard to want to go back to BOTW with TOTK existing. I think the map of TOTK will be atleast doubled in size if not more and we get new abilities and much better enemy variety. Also, it seems Nintendo fixed the gameplay loop and we actually have a reason to kill every single enemy we see now.

Of all the games that have came out over the years of me being a gamer breath of the wild stuck out the most because it encapsulated the excitement for the switch when it was first comming out it was a very exciting time in my life. And a cupple years later when I finally got a switch and was playing breath of the wild on switch it represents excitement again because I was one school year off of graduating and for all of eleventh and twelfth grade it was the game I played most it just has this indiscribable charm to it. Though with me entering the workforce for the past year I haven’t had time to finish the game I’m on the last Devine beast then off to Gannon. Maybe I’ll break it out and play again and finish

I am in a Contrariar place with sandbox Zelda. I am through the roof stoked for tears of the kingdom, but at the same time I’m trying to play breath of the wild and I can’t get into it. At all. I’m still in the great plateau. I’ve just got magnesis and that’s it. I am visually impaired, and I’ve lost some vision since botw came out,
The thought exists in the back of my head about breath of the wild, becoming obsolete to tears of the kingdom and I get where you’re coming from on that. It is a great game and it’s on right even if it kicked my ass. This is never happened truly to Zelda before. I know people have their own games they prefer, but all of the older Zelda games are someone’s favorite.

me and my little brother played BOTW on launch, we had a system, once one finished a divine beast it was the others turn. we stayed up all night got all the divine beasts but revali . and since i had to leave in the morning we decided to just go and see if we can get into hyrule castle. we didnt have much stamina so we couldnt swim into the harbor or the prison entrance. and to many guardians to storm the gates. we climbed the big pillar outside the castle. and just glided down into the prison. we got super hyped when we found the legendary shield. we went all the way to the throne room. fought ganon got him to half health and died. realized it was morning and i had to leave. we both then restarted on our own wiiu. what i would do just to have that night again. i did a final playthrough with that original copy on my old WIIU and man the memory's. please reply with yalls first time playing id love to hear them

Breath of the wild was the first game ive played as an adult that literally turned me back into a 9 year old kid again, sharing secrets and tips with my friends and the community that i had discovered or come across. Im an old school gamer, and i started with the original legend of zelda...and breath of the wild instantly took me back to my childhood, and to a much happier time in my life. It reminded me of my first trip through the original legend of zelda, and how happy i was as a kid. At the time botw came out, my fiance had just left me, i had lost my job, and i was in a pretty deep depression at the time. Botw allowed that excitement i hadnt felt for years over a game to come back out, and i lost myself in its world, and simultaneously found myself again in the real world. I dont think it would be a stretch to say in some ways it might have even saved my life, because i was about as low as a person could be. Im looking forward to tears of the kingdom, and hoping once again that sense of childlike wonder can find its way back to me.

Generously great video. I recently finished ToTK and I was left not just stressed, but also questioning. Is it really the end of not just the Era of the Wild, but also the Zelda series entirely?
Sometimes when games tell a very dire story that ends peacefully, I always get so upset when developers say that they will continue. It's like Sonic Frontiers; that game feels like it was the last Sonic game but SEGA is willing to continue after the success of Frontiers.
But in Zelda's case? ...I mean, if Nintendo keeps making Zelda games, that's cool...but even if Zelda entered the modern era (Sheikah tech, Zonai tech), it just really feel like the true end to the series as a whole.
Just want to point out a potential opinion, but even so, I feel like ToTK should be the end of Zelda. I doubt it, but it's so wonderful that it has to be the closure of a epic book. Even if AoC isn't canon, I don't know what kind of gamer or developer I am without playing, and taking inspirations and ideas from the Era of the Wild Zelda. ❤❤❤

You know I’m just realizing that theirs probably going to be traditional Zelda items back in totk, you’ll probably going to Abe to fuse items to weapons to get very specific items. Like I’m pretty confident theirs going to be a hook shot type item that you can’t use but fuse to a spear or something.

BOTW REVIEW: The only two parts i hated was: Trying to beat LYNELS, until i got 10 HEART CONTAINERS they WERE IMPOSSIBLE and 900 Korok Seeds, i stopped about 310 because it was a WASTE OF TIME After that.

If it wasn't for the korok seeds I would have tried 100% Breath of the Wild. My only gripes was the story felt lacking, the shrines got boring after like 60 - 70 of them, and none of the main boss fights felt memorable. Honestly the lynels were more memorable than all the Ganon fights. I still think the game was a strong 9.5ish. the exploration alone and discovering things for the first time like enemies, world bosses, shrines, etc.... Really emersed you in into it.

Any how the reason that I am a "The Legend Of Zelda" fan is because I have been alive since the beginning of the franchise and from the first time I played it I fell in love with everything about it. In the NES 8bit era The Leyend Of Zelda was a innovation. Before the NES we had came from the Atari, the Coleco Vision but the graphics didn't really impress and then something magical happened.... Along came this gray and black box with a door in the front and red letters spelling out Nintendo Entertainment System.... I started with the big 3 Metroid, Super Mario Bros and the Leyend Of Zelda and the one that hooked me on the line was the last of the 3.... I even love "The Adventure Of Link" and even though people talk bad about it I defend it like a rabid dog.... But even if I was already a fan the most impact of the franchise was the day I came from the game store and I booted up a game called "A link to the past".... I remember everything vividly.... Imagine if I love the franchise that I bought the cartridge before buying my first Switch.... As of right now I've had 3 Switch and all have been stolen. I've never owned a OLED yet but every time I buy a Switch I have to get BOTW.... I'm definitely sad that I can't play TFTK on day one but pretty soon I'll scrounge around enough money to get an OLED and TFTK.... But BOTW didn't disappoint.

I understand and seriously respect your concern. But the difference between these two games will be the difference between camping out in the wild raw, bringing nothing to aid your trip except maybe a pocket knife… and going camping with a zillion dollar RV and all the highest tech camping tools. The same world is out there, but the mentality and practice will not leave you in the same rut. You’ll always be able to stroll through the woods without that magic RV.
