  • !Yo! I'm back with my first Seoul street photography POV vid, and to kick it off we're going to cruise around the city's street photo golden zone: Euljiro 3-Ga. This video was super fun to film, and to work out on a technical level. For my first time shooting miked up and with a double camera amalgamation, I think it worked out ok!
    In this series on South Korean street photography, I'm hoping to show more than just the photos. I want to give a sense of what it's like talking to strangers, how to have positive interactions, and how to be invited into people's personal spaces and places. Street photography has the potential to be an overwhelmingly positive activity, one that encourages mutual understanding and closeness with other people, rather than the perpetuation of difference and distance.
    The last thing I want to say is that, for the little bit of advice I do offer, I try make it applicable to your context, not just photography in Korea. Hopefully some of the photo tips that work for me in Seoul, work for you wherever you are. If they do, be sure to let me know!
    *My Korean is not super good. I've done my best with the translations in the captions, but if you notice anything egregious, please let me know and I'll be sure to adjust it. Thanks!

    My gear for this vid:
    Nikon Z6
    Nikkor 35mm 1.8S
    DJI Osmo Action
    RODE Lavalier Go
    Zoom H6
    Super janky plastic tripod that I don't know where it came from
    $5 Bruce Gilden vest (without which none of this would be possible)

    I gave up street photography cause I found that people just don’t like suddenly having a camera pointing at them. I have some cool street photos from Korea but.. just felt like people were too sus or annoyed by it. You seem to have great interactions though! Love the pictures

    • @chrisdacanha
      @chrisdacanha  2 года назад +1

      Sure, street photography can be pretty invasive, but I think there’s a way to include the subject in the process that isn’t confrontational or bothersome. It usually just means a lot of talking! Glad you like the pictures~

    Really nice video! I am going to spend 3 weeks in Seoul in August (third visit there), this time really concentrating on taking street photography. The feeling I have looking at your video is that people seem fairly open to being photographed, when you are friendly and relaxed. Would say that is the case most of time? Is there anything I should be aware of as a street photographer?

    • @chrisdacanha
      @chrisdacanha  2 года назад

      Thanks! Street photography is generally well received if you do it in a visible way. I recommend being open, friendly, and willing to say hi. Try be sensitive to the mood of where you are and whose picture you’re taking. If anyone indicates they’re not interested, just politely acknowledge it and move on. Good luck!

    Really inspiring video. I am always too shy to take pictures of strangers, but I am working on it :)
    May I ask 2 questions? do you use manual or autofocus? And exposure? Do you let camera choose the right setting?
    Thank you, please make more videos :)

    • @chrisdacanha
      @chrisdacanha  2 года назад +1

      I hope this video helps make it a little easier! Sure, I use autofocus. Unless I’m shooting with a range finder, autofocus is just much more reliable. As for exposure I generally shoot in Aperture Priority under exposed by a third of a stop. There’s no single setting that works for every situation though, so I’m constantly changing settings.

    Hi Chris. Thanks for this great video. I am coming to Seoul to do street photography could you suggest som of the beaten track places to visit. And secondly are people open to taking their photo or should one ask and if so how do they respond to non Korean people doing this.

    • @chrisdacanha
      @chrisdacanha  2 года назад

      Hey Howie, I'd check out Euljiro, Jongno and Yeongdeungpo. Plenty of spots around those areas.
      Receptivity to being photographed varies, but be polite and positive and people should be relaxed. If anyone indicates that they're not interested, best to leave them be!
