  • I arrived on the island of Dhiffushi in the Maldives, which had been recommended to me as a beautiful island to visit. But it wasn't at all what I was expecting. The beaches were covered with garbage, there were almost no tourists and not many locals, there were ugly abandoned buildings, unfinished construction projects and piles of garbage and building materials scattered all over the island. I sincerely wanted to enjoy my time there, but it was in a rough state and so I had to be honest about that in the video. I ended up leaving Dhiffushi a day early and going to a five star resort on a private island, which I will show in the next video.

The main reason I knew about Dhiffushi and decided to go there was because of a video I'd watched by fellow travel vlogger William Taudien, who had been there recently. I went back and watched his video, and it looks like a completely different island. Perfect weather, there were other tourists there and no garbage. So it seems that since he visited the island just a month or so before me, everything changed. The rainy season started, tourists stopped coming and as a result I guess they stopped cleaning up the island. This hadn't been the case on the other island I'd visited of Maafushi, maybe because that island stays busy through the rainy season. Whatever the reason, it seems that the issue on Dhiffushi was a result of low season and under different conditions then it's quite a nice island. You can watch William's video here: ruclips.net/video/j4UrMIjqCbI/видео.html

I don't think I'll go back anytime soon, lots of other places I want to explore. But yes I'd be happy to return to the Maldives sometime in the future and would plan to go during the drier season.

I think the weather totally changed the whole vibe of this place. When I was on this island I saw a lot of incredible views. The beach was cleaned every day and no trash. Seems like the monsoon rain hit the maldives recently.

Yeah I rewatched your video earlier today because I wanted to make sure I actually went to the same island. I couldn't believe how different it looked in your video, it was like two different places. I guess they must have stopped cleaning up the island after the main tourist season was over. So it will probably be nicer again later in the year when they're getting ready for the winter tourist season.

I've always found that decay and neglect feel a lot sadder in beach areas. You almost expect it in parts of a big city, and maybe even the run-down area is the cool area. But at the beach, you want things to be carefree, like there are no problems in the world.

The concept of paradise itself is flawed. You want your bag of chips, bottle of water, shrink wrapped food, coffee in a plastic cup and you want it cheap. That is one aspect of paradise but you also don't want to see plastic waste, under construction buildings etc. It seems most people don't know that plastic waste from USA is dumped in poor countries where it ends up in landfills and the ocean and then these people travel and complain how dirty the ocean is. At least some of that is your own waste. Not a specific criticism of Gabriel who I'm sure is more environmentally conscious than most.

If you're not prepared to pay for that then go elsewhere like Thailand or Indonesia or Sri Lanka where you get this type of local experience but much cheaper!

From an ABC News article on the Maldives: "Ibrahim Mubbasir and his family live on the island of Dhiffushi. It is suffering from severe erosion, and flooding has increased from two or three times a year to twice a month. Four years ago, the family's well became unusable because of salt water contamination, leaving them to rely on collecting rainwater. Mubbasir said they only have enough fresh water to last for three more months."

One thing I noticed, were telltale signs of flooding - probably from the ocean. The sandbags in front of the school were the tipoff. Maybe the combination of a storm surge, coupled with lack of funds for workers, low season, no tourists, and other factors spurred an evacuation or relocation of sorts. Another thing I noticed in Male were lots of floating plastic bottles. I've got think that waste disposal (where to take it), is a challenge. Stuff just ends up in the ocean, and it ends up on various islands.

Dustbin is placed everywhere but still they throw nowhere and this is done by locals. They will wake up but that will be late , like my country has started waste management campaign from last few years.

Thanks gabe for explaining showing the reality as opposied to peoples dreams of soaking up the sun in a tropical paradise, and all along that dream is only really avaliable if your rich enough to stay in a private 5 star tropical all inclusive resort for a week or 2 ,it sort of sums life up really for most people dont belive the hype or the travel agents adverts.
i hope you enjoyed your stay in a five start all inclusive resort i think for some one like you ,you really should stay in these type of resorts for a couple of days a lot more ofton than you do because full time travel is extremily tiring so these type of resorts are ideal for you to re charge your batterys there not thing wrong with a bit of pampering now and again you work hard producing such grate videos plus lots of people who watch your channel i am sure would also like to see what staying in these 5 star all inclusive resort is like now and again as every one likes seeing how the other half live

It is a noble and moral duty, Gabriel to show the less attractive side to a place. because many people save up their hard earned money; for a once in a lifetime, dream holiday.
Most places look less appealing in bad weather and depend on blue seas and clean sand to appear paradisiacal.
Without good architecture or structural beauty; their appeal is virtually zero.
After all, a beach is a beach; wherever you go and looking out to sea; much of a sameness; dependent on sun to provide the necessary colouring in of endless blues; to create glorious panoramas.
Thanks for helping people to be aware of the myth of paradise, when sea and sand are the only components.
Without the veneer of the sun; flaws are obvious.

I love your videos, but I have to say this one felt like a somewhat dishonest representation.
I spent 10 days in Dhiffhusi in January 2018, coming from Australia, so obviously aware of what constitutes good beaches, and having been to various "tropical paradises" such as Fiji, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Zanzibar etc, I can easily say none even remotely came close to being as beautiful as Dhiffushi. Absolutely crystal clear waters, crazy marine life - literally snorkelling right off the beach with sharks and sting rays. True tropical paradise. You chose the shittest time of the year to visit - rain, garbage dumping trade winds, desolate, in the wake of one of the most insanely stupid times in recent history (COVID fear) which no doubt bankrupted most of those construction sites, businesses etc - none of those were there when we visited pre-pandemic.
It's a shame for the locals, because it isn't a prosperous island, and your video likely has cost them a lot of much needed income.
You're lucky you are cute, because otherwise I would bust your chops, sir!

Hey Gabriel, I totally agree with you about the cat. When it was happening I saw you didn't have any food yet so you couldn't feed the cat, although if you had it would probably shut it up. Myself if I were in your place and had food I know I would have fed the cat.
I am loving this series of the Maldives. I have never been there and don't know that I ever will be able to get there. There don't seem to be much to do in the country except go swimming, I can do that in a lot of other places. I am not wealthy so I have to travel on a tight budget no matter where I go so if I go there I will have to do it in the off season like you are doing.
Take care my friend and look forward to seeing your next video in the resort.

The guy with Gabriel at the table had no regard for the cat's cries of hunger. He had food but made an unsympathetic remark about the cat instead of giving it a few pieces of his food. Heartless! The tone of his voice is so boring and without feeling. Maybe one day he will be hungry and won't get food from someone.

Yes, ocean pollution. I see it in the Bahamas all the time too. If you go to the Atlantic side it has ocean garbage. On the Caribbean side beautiful and clean (so far). I still prefer THIS to what I see in Hawaii and Turks & Caicos. Monster Ritz hotels destroying the environment with hideous pricing ! TO me the TRANQUILITY and low-prices make it WORTH it. 😊

Are you still in the Maldives?.. if you can you should really come see Addu City..it's the southern most Island.. not very many "backpacker travellers" have gone to that part..( talking about RUclipsrs) but it's really nice here.. much better than male but mostly well developed city life too.. it's a good mix of nature and city life .. and you could get really nice accomodation for reasonable prices too . You do have to get a domestic flight to come here tho..that's the fastest.. easiest and cheapest way.
If u already left the Maldives then maybe another time ..you could come and see the south side
There are a lot more ppl here compared to the islands you are visiting because.. most of the islands near Male'... The locals have jobs in the capital city so they take a boat ride to Male' during day time for their jobs..

It is possible that a storm destroyed many parts of the island and money wasnt available to rebuild so it fell into neglect.
I have noticed that in countries where they are conservative by religion but reliant on tourism,, they offer such places as bikini beach to show tolerance and openess but purposely neglect these places to deter people from using them .
Regardless, it is such a shame to see beauty in ruins .

Its great to see the real world and not what the travel brochures show you, thank you, great work. Have to say though that Dhiffushi is not a great advert for the Maldives. I think I would have got the first available boat out the next day. Keep safe
