The new BMW M2 - From a designers perspective
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 авг 2024
- Lately, BMW design has not been great. There’s just no other way to put it. They have diluted their own design language which used to be one of the strongest on the market.
Remember back in the 80s and 90s? Even up until the mid 2000s? The face and the proportions of a BMW was unified across the entire lineup. You knew without a doubt that what you were looking at was a car manufactured and designed by the great Bavarian brand.
Today, all of that is gone. The designs of the current lineup are as different and as far away from each other as the A-pillar is from the front axle on the new M240i.
What I want to do in this video is first of all, explain myself by comparing the proportions of the last M2 to the M240 to show you what’s off. Then I’m going to disregard the M2 spy shots and design my own version of the new M2 by taking inspiration from one of the coolest BMW concepts that never made it into production - the BMW CSL Concept from 2015.

Glad I own the original 2017 M2. That being said, your design would be a worthy successor.
Same.. lucky to own this flawless looking beast too
the lci version or comp ? (the lci is just legendary)
@@hknp LCI
@@hknp It’s the first version, pre LCI.
Glad I own an M2 CS.
I agree 100%. I think if they took inspiration from their models between “94-“02; simplicity mixed with modern lights/aesthetics would turn out to be a nostalgic eye pleaser.
Dont worry man I believe its coming soon.
It's really annoying tbh. I'm now of the age I can finally buy a new BMW and I don't want a single one. I've owned second hand BMW's all my life. Always been my favourite brand.
Now I would rather have a Kia.
@@thistimeimhere True. Not speaking for myself; I feel like after the first 2 weeks of owning a new car, it won't matter to you if its a Kia or a BMW. I feel like novelty will have worn off by then. (Except if you have a Kia it's not going to break down)
Yup the nicest bmw where the older beauts
This guy needs to be BMW's designer
Most notable, for me, with the M2 is the widened rear quarter panels - the wheel bulge - which really gives it a muscular look minus the "tacked-on" look of, say, the wide body Challenger. I still like the wheel arches of the Challenger, but the M2's look more organic and not like an afterthought. Good video, Sketch. thanks man.
One of the best redesigns you’ve done boss. Good going
Damn those headlights just totally transformed the design... And the final result looks so good, easily one of your best ones
Over the last few years, BMW has gone from probably my favorite car manufacturer to one of my least favorite. It's so frustrating to see all the blatant design flaws and complete downgrades in terms of design and identity. All the new models (Except for the M5, M4 and M3) are missing the iconic "BMW stance". It's just very sad to see to be honest.
That's why I stick with my F22
I'm an E90 owner and 100% agree. The muscular stance he was discussing with the rear sitting higher than the front is very apparent in the E90 and it's one of my favorite parts of the design. Such a shame that they've ditched classic elements like that in favor for abstract shit.
the m5 and m8 are the only good looking ones
atleast they havent ruined the SUVs
these ppl buying cars for no reason other than design always baffles me. why do u buy a vehicle where u know literally zero about the internals? new g80 m3 engine is top quality and u will see tuners mod this for years, pushing absolute limit. very reliable. getting this race-ready engine puts m3 in one of top cars ever from bmw alone, u get so much for little up-front cost. yet these people nitpick a design flaw fixed by 3rd party companies and write it off entirely. tell me u are from usa without telling me.. LOL
@@Artyom_P yea I don't understand
I think this is your best redesign up to date.
as a long time BMW owner, you are dead accurate and I appreciate you articulating what and why they just aren't exciting to look at anymore.
the original M2 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made
Well said, that’s why I’m sticking with my E82. There’s always gonna be more powerful cars with better performance. But if the design is bad, I would rather drive my 300hp 135i which is already powerful enough with some mods.
Love the format of video and the BMW you made
Bro the video released like 2 mins ago
What a massive improvement! As you said, what a missed opportunity… but if only someone working at BMW could see what you’ve pointed out so well and jump! They’d make their career!
You’ve nailed that. Simple tweaks and suddenly its a BMW! Amazing, I think car design is about making something new that has to have some element of recognisability of the past. You 100% did that, BMW should hire you.
The previous M2 is such a perfect-looking car. The new one...not so much, I almost gag looking at it lol. What were they thinking?? Your redesign definitely makes it a bit better though!
@Stefan I guess I meant the M240i
True, btw I didn’t know u were here foorum 😳
You fixed everything wrong with the design of this car. It frustrates me more than it should that independent designers are out here making the most beautiful BMW designs in photoshop but BMW itself seems to have no interest in making their cars look even decent anymore.
First time watching one of your videos, loved it! It definitely makes me look at my M2C in a different way!
Having seen the leaks of the front bumper from China and the prototype car during testing I'm not afraid. It will look very rectangular and I like that actually. Simple shapes, not too many weird angles etc.
The M3 and M4 should have adopted the same approach, which would bring them more in line with the M5 which has a slightly squared off grille anyway.
My Gawd! I've been a continuous BMW owner since my first 1969 2002. I currently have a track modified E36 BMW with 25K on the odo, but will likely replace with a Porsche 911 when I retire in 2 years, due to BMW's identity confusion. If BMW doesn't hire you IMMEDIATELY, that will be a forgone conclusion. I would LOVE to get a new M3 in 2 years, but BMW has hopscotched all over the freaking planet, design-wise, powertrain wise, steering and suspension wise since 1999. Porsche has rightfully utilized incremental improvements in the last 20 years to remain best-in-class across all Porsche platforms. BMW - Hire this guy, and ensure you have a future with car enthusiasts younger than I.
Bmw litterally makes the perfect cars, outstanding quality, expensinve interiors, performance, corners good amd then you see the exterior🤮
I agree with all except for the proportions of the 'long' hood - I like the exaggeration. This is a front engine, rear wheel drive 2 door sports car. Celebrate the recipe imo. (headlights from the concept are fantastic)
Current BMW designers should watch these videos.
Stunning design ... people at BMW should hire someone like you
2:40 that's actually one of my biggest peeves with modern car design, only a few brands such as Rolls Royce are keeping both front and rear ends on equal height
yeah but Rolls-Royce aims at a more of an elegant design instead of sporty so it would make sense to put them at the same high
@@kwardozz but 1960s sports cars also had equal height front and rear so I think there's still some legitimacy to the idea
Koenigsegg sort of does it too
@@falcongamer58 koenigsegg cars are very low
like in height
so it makes ssense
they cant avoid that if they wanted to
@@bruhinthebruhwiththebruh1370 Lamborghini cars are low too but the rear is higher than the front
The headlights completely transform the car.
Omg, now you really made it look like a BMW! Awesome work
One of your best works for me. Congrats, it looks great
My last comment was a bit critic, but this one is completely opposite. Huge congrats for this one sir. Well done.
The new 2 Series really reminds me of a Skyline GTR. I'm not sure why, but I think it has to do with it how the body panels are so square but bulbous
True! But i like g20 design, and new 5 Series also but they could have made the 3 Series look better in some angles👍🏼
Love what you did with this car! I saw a NEW BMW today and could not tell what it was and if I had not seen the logo I would never have known. Than to hear you say the same thing was funny to me lol. Keep up the great work :)
Whether car guys think this M2 is ugly or pretty BMW always delivers a model with strong identity that's hard to replicate, so strong that non car guys recognize it us undeniably a BMW.
Agree with you mostly. But the fact that there is no more design unity in the different modells of BMW to me is a plus point. I remeember back in the 2000 how we used to make fun out of the Audi modells that you cant distinguish them anymore. Then in the 2010s I think BMW leaned towards this corporal design much more, and it was hard to distinguish a 3 with a 5 or 7 series etc... Now they start to seperate their modells again what I appreciate. So the customers has more freedom of decision in buying and you might not like every modell, but that is called: beauty lies in the eye´of the beholder... :) Cheers mate, awesome video, and amazing uplifting of that M2!!!
I actually love bmw M design language. The rabbit teeth grills took a few years to grow on me but when one of those pulls up behind you it’s instant brand recognition. M240i is a great design. Bmw m is making the best drivers cars outside of Porsche.
Yeah I agree the m3/4 rabbit grill has grown on me especially if its in a darker paint but I feel like bmw designs should be naturally beautiful. They should have a sleek, smooth, timeless design instead of this aggressive geometric look. Any other generation of m3 you look at and instantly think that’s a good looking car but not the g80
I watch your videos many many times. But this one proves your talent. BMW should hire you ;)
they fucked up
they fucked up big time on this one.
that render using the 2015 concept was fucking insane
I know for a fact that ill be getting the M240i still over the WRX
partially cause my work gives us discounts on BMW and Mercedes lol
but also, I kinda wanna customize the M240i and see if we can make it pretty haha
People say BMW grills have become too big but my biggest problem with this M240i is that grill is small than before
Nice work, especially on those horrible front triangular intakes👏
Love your rendition of the front grill ‼️👍🏻
Hi Bembli. Good work. But you forgot to fix the most important thing: the in the middle of nowhere hood line.
The hood line should be placed just above the kidneys. The bonnet should end just there, not inches before. The in the middle of nowhere hood line breaks visually the length of the bonnet and ruins the front end. It makes a lot of difference when it¡s placed correctly (ex. G11 7 Series vs F01 7 Series or E92 3 series vs F32 4 Series, same for 1 Series, etc)! The same you insist on the belt line, A pillar and C pillar lines, you should also comment in your videos about the hood line.
Thanks!
The new design language of BMW is very clear. Very simple, if it's ugly, it's a BMW.
I agree on much of what you say. BMW has very messy design language these days. Chris Bangle was brought in to shake things up - to get rid of the "sausage cars" which looked almost the same except for the size. He did a very good job, but when he left, things went south. There are still some BMWs I really like, for example, the pre-facelift F20 1-series, and then the new M240i - I think it's stunning. As there probably won't be an M2 with four wheel drive, the M240i is the perfect BMW out there for me right now. Your photoshop skills are amazing, but I really don't think there's a need to change the M240i that much. In my opinion the best looking BMW in sale today.
I have hope! Currently waiting on the new M2 for real deal to be shown or going to have to get a 2021 one
Loved the vid! Would it be possible to remodel a Lexus sc430?
im sorry man, but youre not really being fair with the comparison here. you draw a line from the m2's a pillar that starts pretty much where the trim ends (at the point of that triangle piece). then draw a similar line on the m240i, but set it back much further. if i had to guess, probably 8cm or so. initially i did think the m240i's front was a bit long, but looking at the M2's, its really not that different. were talking 1 or 2cm difference between front axle and the leading edge of the doors.
the main things i have an issue with about the m240i is the side and the head/taillight design. its just super bland from the side and the lights look strange. think thats what makes the car look off to me.
overall though, this new M2 is much cleaner than the previous one. particularly the bumpers which look much better integrated. i also like that they paint the skirts and "diffuser" gloss black. kinda wish they did it on the front too though. i think a black front lip would help this car so much.
as for your redesign. it looks better. just the headlights alone make a huge difference and thats what i find super annoying about BMW atm. i think they have a really good, nice looking design language if they just stepped away from a couple bad design cue's. like, im not a fan of the rear lights on a few of these new bmw's. the m240i's included. but the current M4? looks awesome so i know the style of rear lights work, just not with the M240i.
We are not in the 80s and 90s. This is 2022. BMW made the right moves. And I believe they have all the money and research designers that money can buy to have arrived at their decision. Next week everyone starts loving it. And I always thought their older cats were ugly btw. Lol
i took delivery of the 2023 M240i this January. Although i think some of those design languages makes car less prettier but meantime i feel it looks more aggressive and muscular. I have seen videos with M240i passing other cars and I can tell. The new design is more commanding and unique. No doubt, your design is very good but for a 2 series, I think BMW doesn't want it to be too perfect for its price. Btw, great photoshop skills and presentation. I used to be a certified photoshop 6.0 expert so i like people with this skill and also use it here.
Great redesign ! Love it :)
Agreed, I was really shocked when seeing the latest design of BMW cars.
Your redesign is a thing of beauty!
Nice Remake of the M240i, good job
The 2022 2 series looks great and I can’t wait to see the new M2.
I agree with you regarding the shapes/graphical elements of the car being completely random/disjointed... but I love the extra long hood and "square" proportions, it just looks 80's cool without being overtly retro.
your redesign looks a 1000 times better than the actual one. its like they dont know how to make cars anymore
hey man your videos are really great, love it tht you explain to us who know nothing abt desgning what you actually mean design wise with lines and dots, hats off.
Somebody PLEASE show this to BMW. It's not too late to make it look like this. BMW can't let their brand fall off like that. Never seen a better front of BMW car ever...
Wow, at first I was skeptical of that main grill but this is one of your best redesigns. Bravo 👏
Really good looking redesign!
BMW is one of cars that I used to see a BMW from a distance as a kid could easily differentiate other than supercar
The OG M2 was the high-water mark for BMW small coupes. Of course manufacturers have to freshen their stuff from time to time and it's always a crap-shoot when you do that. The newest M240i is a step back and less exciting but it's not bad. Oh well, sometimes new designs work and other times they disappoint.
As a person who currently has the 2022 230i, I love that sketch of yours. If that's actually what the M2 looks like, I'm snatching it up right away.
The new m240i just doesn’t give the same feeling as the old M2. Your redesign does tho!
The thing with the bmw prototypes is that bmw actually is king in hiding the details of the bodywork under that wrap. Also those rectangular shapes are only screwed on so they provide the function necessary for the car to be able to run properly. The car needs to be presented so that we know what it will look like. That being said, i didn’t write the comment to defend bmw, because i too recently found myself being agonized over some decisions they made in terms of design, and i am not a designer, respectively an industrial designer, but an automotive engineer.
The kidneys and the new redesigned grille looks like a happy face with sunglasses
GORGEOUS REDESIGN!!!!!!!!!!! Why aren't you working for BMW!
I really like your work, but in this case I like original version more and it's not even M2. I didn't liked previous generation of M240i but M2 totally nailed it. It was wider, lower and it completely changed the look of the car. But as others said, I now own 2018 and probably will not change it for the new version. But we will see.
I dont understand why every car company hiers you. you are awesome
Fantastic video! Learned a lot. :)
the headlights make a huge difference. looks great
This is one of your best redesign for me
I totally agree with you regarding the BMW designers going off on some sort of crusade to dilute the iconic distinctive BMW branding. The headlights on the new model look completely weird and totally foreign to the brand. I really dislike both the front and rear ends on this 240. The oversized triangular air vents look out of place and the rear end just looks “bad” I own a 2020 M240i, and I would never swap it for this new generation 2 series! I feel the compact dimensions of my model + the M2 Competition are far more in keeping with the traditions of the BMW “M” brand.
Dude! You've created an object of absolute dynamic beauty that I wouldn't hesitate buying if I had the cash. Thanks!!
In my opinion, BMW is at the forefront of car design atm. My two main reasons for this is 1) Their designs are not copies of modern trends (this makes them stand out in the market place for better or for worse). I think it's for the better because none of their new designs are instantly liked, but takes time to 'grow' on ppl. This, I believe, will age them well into their end of life cycle.
2) They're not afraid to break the mold of convention or to cave in to mass hysteria. This proves they are visionary and knows where they're going.
What most people don't seem to consider, is that their designers have been living with the design for months, they know when it is great. Most people, when seeing the new design for the first time in photos, it doesn't represent the true effect and leads people to the wrong emotion from the outset. This emotion is then difficult to change - but it does change with most people over time. I think this is a good thing.
Definitely. As a person who is finally able to afford cars like the M2, I appreciate polarizing designs that bmw has. I don’t want to drive something that looks like a 330i if it’s actually an m3. I want people to know I want power, acceleration and amazing handling. No matter how much people hate the new BMW, I love it. It’s why I went with a 21 Hyundai Elantra for my first car and not the 22 civic. It was just too boring looking for me.
Looks nice, you just forgot to widen the front and back fenders, M cars usually have a wider wheel base
You are totally right about what you have said, you redesigned it and made some good changes, also I have to tell that some things do not match still, your car face is smiling (you can see it under the grill) and headlights (eyes) look sad. Also you could remove that vertical line right after the front wheel which is utterly pointless.
Sincerely by anonymous designer from Milan.
E46 M3: Peak BMW design.
Your redesign of the 240i looks more BMW like than the original!!
hey really love your work keep it up and please could you do the toyota land cruiser 79 series redesign
You make the new ugly us hell BMW looks like something I would like to have forever ^^ nice job bro, keep it up.
I own a 2018 M2 and can only hope the G87 looks close to your design. Right now, I have no desire to jump into the new platforms designed by BMW, unless the new M2 looks like your design, than BMW can take my money 😁
I hate how the 2 series bumpers connect to the lights. The lines between the bumpers and the body connect to the lights somewhere in the middle. In the previous generation, there was a connectivity.
I got a 2018 LCI in the best color the gray. It's sick. And a keeper.
Your redesign is amazing, but my OCD can't take the fact you forgot to change the right intake (?) and didn't make it like the left one
You nailed it once again. IMHO, the BMW designers that are responsible for such complete failures in the rules of aesthetics and basic design language lately, should be fired.
Your design is so good that I thought (from looking at the thumbnail) they actually made this new m2, and it would actually look good... :D
Your analysis is really spot on. Designwise BMW drove itself into an identlty crisis.
Dude... your work is dope!
Clearly you can’t fix the front and rear light proportions on your own as a customer but the new aftermarket front splitter and rear spoiler gets close to your redesign when the car is lowered a touch and 20in wheels are added. Check out AUTOID’s M240i on their channel. It looks fantastic.
Thanks for the video!
this is only the 2 Automobil not the actual m2, and you are comparing it with a 2017 m2
I think F series BMW is peak performance while maintaining identity and heritage in the looks department, definitely biased but owned lots of E series as well.
Spot on mate
would love to see how you would modernize the c209 CLK
The only thing I think still needs some changing is that bonnet line into the light and I would have the bonnet open from in front of the badge instead of behind it for a seamless front - just like the concept car. Find a way to have the side bonnet line have a smooth transition into the light somehow.
i wish modern cars would bring back circular or pop up headlights, i know there a bit out dated but it would be cool.
DAMN YOU! I was so excited when I saw your thumbnail pic and very disappointed that it is not the actual M2! Your design is gorgeous! BMW failed with the designs of all the new models. They should hire you to bring the beauty back to their beasts. Great job!👍
Would you consider making a video about the bmw e60 5 -series? As that design aged well imho, compared to the opinion of people when it came out in 2003. What do you think of that design era? (E60, E65 and E90)
Damn, I guess I'm the only one who loves the look of the M240i
The new BMW M2 should look like this!
Is it just me or does the new m2 look a lot like a muscle car
Too bad you didn’t show the redesign of the rear end. Front end looks spectacular
Wow some of your best work, looks fantastic 👌🏼
