I was working on a forklift and in a freezer then I took my physical and passed with good bp, good hearing and vision. Then my doc said the government seems to be leaning toward not allowing CDLs past 70. Also he was looking at me weird and asked the same question twice. I wanted to punch him for that but he was looking for high drivers. I only use my class A once in a while and it's mostly out of boredom. But take your tests, get it done. Pass your BP vision hearing and don't be colorblind. You'll be fine. Get er done. I ain't near 70 yet but I know an 80 year old who hauls apples with doubles and he gets along fine. Excellent video very informative! I have a question based on two dislocated disc in my lower back and I've taken pain meds for it. Would that automatically disqualify me? Thanks
It depends on the medication and the effects the medication has on you. If your medication makes you tired it can be disqualifying (even if it's legally prescribed). The FMSCA says anything that will make you lose consciousness or cause you to fall asleep is disqualifying. Suboxone if legally prescribed isn't disqualifying but methadone is because of the medication side effects of causing loss of consciousness and hallucinations. Neurontin isn't disqualifying when prescribed legally but it's always good to have a doctor's note saying the patient is tolerating the medications.
We would be able to tell if blood sugars are not under control via the urinalysis (sugar in the urine). We would not be asking for blood so we wouldn't know you are diabetic if numbers are controlled. Of course my recommendation has to be to disclose all pertinent medical information on your intake paperwork.

Medical examiners care about your physical ability to perform the job. FMSCA mandates this examination as a fit-to-drive exam. Is the person able to drive? If you are having issues with the shoulder and are having trouble driving a truck, then getting s SPE is the only way to get you back to work. It takes quite months to get the SPE done. So don't be in a hurry. Once it is and you have all the paperwork bring it in to the medical examiner and they can pass you for at least a year.

I will usually take blood pressure several times during the exam for exactly this reason. Just let the doctor know that you are nervous and they should accommodate you.
Medical examiners are allowed to check the blood pressure up to 3 times. We are ONLY allowed to do the test in the seated position. So a medical examiner may lay you down for 15 minutes and then come into the office, sit you up and check you. Medical examiners are supposed average the 3 checks. So if you get 145/93, 138/89, and 135/88 then the average of all 3 is 139/90. This number should be written down and recorded on the FMCSA paperwork along with the other numbers. While performing a resting blood pressure check the medical examiner should hold the patients arm at heart level to get a more accurate blood pressure reading.

I have an autoimmune disease that's manageable with biologics and stretching/exercise. It mainly affects my back and it has limited some range of mobility. Would this disqualify me?
I would be interested in the medications. Do they work? What side effects? I would check your horizontal field of vision if you had a hard time turning your neck. Normal neck range of motion is 80-90 degree on both sides. Right being more important than your left. Mirrors on the trucks. The FMCSA is very concern about drivers who can't hear and have issues passing out or falling asleep or vision issues.
they will not have access to your medical history but you could possibly have your certification revoked if it was found out that you were not honest during the exam.

@@HardcoreGangsta8 I would have to advise you to mention all medical conditions during the exam. The doctor doing the exam has to make the determination of if it is safe for you to drive.
Sugar, blood, protein, and specific gravity. If any of this is out of order or doesn't look right it's an instant disqualifier. You will need to be checked and treated before you can pass. Short story: Patient has ALOT OF BLOOD in their urine. I can not pass them and tell them so. Everything else was good and he's 27yo. He goes to MD, MD diagnoses him with UTI, patient comes back taking the meds with the medical note from MD and I passed him for 2 years. He's being treated, he has a note, and retested his urine because I had to do a whole new re-exam and no blood in his urine. PASS
Nice video doctor , I have a question , when I do my physical they tell me my vision is 30/40 , but when I saw my opthalmologist he said it's 20/20 , which is more accurate ?
Many things are left in the medical examiners determination and judgement. It's okay to get a qualified ophthalmologist or optometrist to do your eye screening. Bring the paperwork to the medical examiner within 45 days and most of the time the medical examiner can use the paper to pass you for the medical certificate.
The FMCSA doesn't recognize any body weight or neck size and doesn't have guidance or regulations on either. You, the driver, are allow to be as old, as fat, as you want to be as long as you are in good medical health. Being morbidly obese has it's downsides and will eventually take it's toll on your body. It's important to understand just because you are obese does not mean you have automatically have sleep apnea and or should be tested. Same goes for neck size. Medical examiners need to know because you have an 18" neck doesn't mean you have any other signs or symptoms of sleep apnea. The FMCSA suggests asking questions and looking for other telltale signs and symptoms before you send someone for sleep apnea testing. There are many sleep apnea companies out there hoping you send patient after patient to their facility to be tested and diagnosed. $$$$$$ I have sent hundreds of drivers for sleep testing and all of them had 5 or more risk factors for sleep apnea. Only about 25% of those drivers (with 5 + risk factors) ever come back having sleep apnea.

Hi Doc, very informative and detailed video, one question though, I was wondering if a new candidate had a pre-exisiting neurological condition, say epilepsy, such precedure would be unable to detect, what would you do?
Epilepsy is disqualifying. People lie on the FMCSA form. It's not ethical or legal to do so. It's possible for someone to have a disqualifying issue and lie on the paperwork about having it. All the medical examiner can do is to read your paperwork fully and go from there. If you are lying on the paperwork and get caught, it could result in extreme federal legal consequences for the driver. We medical examiners strongly oppose anyone lying on their medical FMCSA paperwork. The answers on the form are "yes" "no" and "not sure". Any question answered "not sure" should cause the medical examiner to ask further questions for clarification, ask for medical supportive paperwork or even further medical testing. The medical examiner should spend time writing down why the patient is unsure about that particular medical condition. It's not uncommon for medical examiners to ask for drug testing, alcohol testing (especially if the patient is drunk or smells like alcohol when they come in for their test), or blood tests.

@@EasyDOTPhysicals so if I don’t pass just a sliver of the eye test due to my lazy eye I will not get my cdl. Cause it’s blurry but I can still see objects in it and if I have a eye doctor say he will sign me a waiver. I just want to be a truck drive local I’m a yard driver right now and I don’t have any issues backing up a trailer and driving it.
And thank you for answering my questions I really do appreciate and I hope just because a slightly blurry eye doesn’t smash another dream of mine to become a local truck driver.
@@bubblezgonecrazy The standards for the vision component are set by the FMCSA. There is a waiver program you can ask about if you do not pass however.
If you had a kidney stone removed , how does that affect your fed med card ? Can you still get a two year card if you pass everything else ?
If my knees are messed up but i can walk and drive fine will they make me heal my knee first or do you think i can pass? Also do they ask past mental health? Thanks!
If the examiner thinks it is safe for you to drive then you should pass. They will ask about mental health.
Doctor the distance you stand and hold the chart thanks
6 feet for the pocket size
I have a question, after an injury in my hip, a plate was installed on the bone, and the knee does not have full bending amplitude (approximately 90 degrees). Otherwise, the leg works well, the nerves are intact. Could this be a barrier to getting a CDL? Thanks
I got the same question
I have scoliosis is that a disqualifier? I had desk work before sitting for hours and my back never hurt.
that is not an automatic disqualifier
Is this the same hearing test for everyone getting the cdl?
I have an autoimmune disease that's manageable with biologics and stretching/exercise. It mainly affects my back and it has limited some range of mobility. Would this disqualify me?
This would completely depend on the exam performed
I would be interested in the medications. Do they work? What side effects? I would check your horizontal field of vision if you had a hard time turning your neck. Normal neck range of motion is 80-90 degree on both sides. Right being more important than your left. Mirrors on the trucks. The FMCSA is very concern about drivers who can't hear and have issues passing out or falling asleep or vision issues.
I'm in Louisiana, how far are you standing from the person when you give them the eye test????
20/40 is the standard. In the example I was standing 6 feet from the driver.
I had one that made me do 50 jumping jacks, run a treadmill for 10 minutes, and step machine for 5 minutes! WTF!?
It almost killed me 🤣
That's a company specific physical not a federal DOT physical
When you finish your DOT Physical, does the FMCSA/DOT have access to my medical history or are they going to terminate me if i leave some things out?
they will not have access to your medical history but you could possibly have your certification revoked if it was found out that you were not honest during the exam.
@@EasyDOTPhysicals lastly, if i am on disability insurance for an injury out of work am i able to still pass a dot physical? Doc said i have lumbar radiculopathy/lumbargo, i have made great progress in recovering and feel like it should pose no threat in operating a CMV, should i mention im on disability?
@@HardcoreGangsta8 I would have to advise you to mention all medical conditions during the exam. The doctor doing the exam has to make the determination of if it is safe for you to drive.
Great video I’m in Florida and need a dot physical for a new job, what do they look for when testing blood and urine?
Thanks! Blood in urine may cause further testing to be required. I have a video on this
@@EasyDOTPhysicals thanks but I’m asking what do they look for when testing your blood and testing your urine?
@@EasyDOTPhysicals what do they look for when testing your blood? What do they look for when testing your urine? Thanks for replying
Good info Doc. Ty.
Glad it was helpful!
Do.you guys do xrays?
no x rays
can you do a video about Substance abuse professional (SAP)on DOT physical
I will. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hey doc, I have Tetralogy of Fallot. What are the odds of me driving a truck?
What do they look for in the urine sample ? Just curious any disqualifications or restrictions
please see my video on Dot physical urine test
Sugar, blood, protein, and specific gravity. If any of this is out of order or doesn't look right it's an instant disqualifier. You will need to be checked and treated before you can pass. Short story: Patient has ALOT OF BLOOD in their urine. I can not pass them and tell them so. Everything else was good and he's 27yo. He goes to MD, MD diagnoses him with UTI, patient comes back taking the meds with the medical note from MD and I passed him for 2 years. He's being treated, he has a note, and retested his urine because I had to do a whole new re-exam and no blood in his urine. PASS
Thanks I had high cholesterol brought it back to normal but been a fat ass lately hopefully it’s not a big deal
If I have a couple spider veins around ankle will I be disqualified?
Not automatically
Nice video doctor , I have a question , when I do my physical they tell me my vision is 30/40 , but when I saw my opthalmologist he said it's 20/20 , which is more accurate ?
thanks for watching! This would depend on how they check it, but I would assume your opthamologist would be most accurate
Many things are left in the medical examiners determination and judgement. It's okay to get a qualified ophthalmologist or optometrist to do your eye screening. Bring the paperwork to the medical examiner within 45 days and most of the time the medical examiner can use the paper to pass you for the medical certificate.
Hey doc about 12 years ago I had surgery to clear my epilepsy. I have been seziure free for over 10 yrs. Am I disqualified!
Oh will I'm north Cincinnati.
Sounds good!
Is there a weight limit that would consider you qualified or disqualified?
It is based on BMI and neck size. Please watch my video on sleep apnea for the details.
@Easy DOT Physicals can you provide the link? I looked for the sleep apnea video, didn't find it

So what if you have a dominant hand injury still having issues
I'm insulin dependent i have been turned away from 2 companies is it possible to drive being insulin dependent? A1c is 7.0. I'm working hard to get it down to 5.5 so maybe I can get off insulin.

Hello i have a question, i have MS and was going to study to get my cdls class A. Would it be a automatic fail because of it. I use to drive single axle Hydraulic brake dump trucks but wanted to get the cdl class A to drive tri axle dump trucks air brakes.
What if you have a high bmi would they deny you getting certified ?
please see my video on sleep apnea
Hi Doc, very informative and detailed video, one question though, I was wondering if a new candidate had a pre-exisiting neurological condition, say epilepsy, such precedure would be unable to detect, what would you do?
The intake paperwork specifically asks about seizures. This is how we would know.
Hey Doctor, I have a question. On Feb 6, 2023 I broke my 2nd and 3rd metacarpal bone with a trailer door. My hand has healed but it's kind of deform. When I make a fist my ring finger under laps my middle finger. My physical therapist states that it should not be a problem passing a DOT physical. My hand is feeling stronger and stronger after exercising it. I would like to know if it is going to be a problem, so I can inform my Ortho doctor for possible surgery to fix the underlaping. Thank you
This is up to the dr. doing the exam. In my office I would need to feel that you can safely drive. If not i would send you for a skill performance evaluation. You may want to look up this option.
Hello, I have an upcoming dot physical and I am on HRT specifically testosterone it is doctor prescribed would this disqualify me?
Im on Suboxone would that disqualify me?
don't know if this is for the acting or not, but don't they require a gown to be worn and isn't there a genital exam during physicals as well as other tests?
No, these are not required by the FMCSA although some doctors may do more or less exams
Could I use glasses during the vision test?
yes
Dr do some doctors get you all necked to do the ficical and make you cough touching you growing
This would be up to the Dr doing the exam
Is the thoery for feet crossed true?... or.?
Doing my DOT physical this morning. I’ve done this 5X already, 46yrs old in September, exercise 5-6 days a week, HARD, and am I n better physical condition than most 25yr olds. Tell me why I am nervous 😂.. Thanks for this video. I feel alot better now
welcome!
Do they cup your testicles and make you cough during this test ?

Hey doctor if you have tuberculosis in the past ,that can be disqualified you?
this is not an automatic disqualification
So does the visual acuity portion not need to be 20ft from the snellen chart?
the standard is 20/40 period
@@EasyDOTPhysicals got it. I’m not sure why they empathize at 20ft then. Because it’s much easier to have a little chart like you do as oppose to having a patient in a hallway 20ft from the chart trying to test while other patients are walking by and noises going on.
Why does every quack improperly perform the blood pressure test ?
Love it, thanks!

My Right eye was scratch by my small dog that left a small scare but only have Half the vision like a grey shadow facing my nose but i see fine on the right half of my eye and my left eye is perfect will this stop me from passing the exam?
Please see my video on the alternative vision standard
Hello I have drop foot in my right foot. I drive with my left foot. Would that fail me ?
It is legal to drive left footed in the United States. It would be up to the doctor doing the exam to make sure it is safe for you to be on the road.
Is the urine sample done there and in how much time are the results ready
Yes. We do ours at the end. The results take no more than 5 minutes.
What do they look out for in the urine sample? Or it's a drug screening apart of the physical in order that get permit?
Would irregular heartbeat disqualify you?
Not automatically. If in my clinic I would want a note from your doctor as to why you have it. If it is deemed safe for you to drive then you should be ok.
I have 20/40 in my left.. 20/30 in my right.. nerve damage from a dog bite when I was a kid. Would I be able to get a cdl or anything I can do? I currently wear corrective glasses to drive a vehicle.
please see my video on the vision requirements
That was a negative lol. Thanks though.
Hey doc I have some nerve damage in my foot that is slowly getting better. Would this fail me? I have a brace that helps me move faster
In our office we would need to think that you could drive safely. It would depend on the testing.
I have a pacemaker, and kidney transplant, would that disqualify me for getting CDL?
Not automatically. At very least you are going to need to have clearance from a cardiologist.
Hey doc question is it accurate in your videos that during the eye exam your standing that close to the driver when asked read this line with one eye??? I thought the letter chart has to be 10ft or something like that……..help me out thank you
It can be done either way
If I’m just trying to get my cdl will I be tested for marijuana for the physical ? I been sober for a month but still waiting .
please see my video on drug testing
Is the vision test done from that distance or further
depends on the size of the chart. It can be done further (like down a hallway) Both ways will measure vision the same.
Hey Doc, I just took my test and scored a 20/30 on vision test. Do you think that will mess up my chances for getting hired? Technically I’ve been offered for pre employment before the DOT test but would like to know if they will revoke my offer
I have a full video on the vision standard
If you passed with 20/30 you'll be fine. If you passed with 20/40 you'll be fine. If it's worse than that you will be disqualified until you get glasses to assist your vision.
Will having gout disqualify me?
Hi, I had an anxiety attack 2 years ago and was hospitalized for 2 hours, it would affect me if I want to get the cld?
this would not automatically be a disqualifying situation. It would depend on if the doctor doing your exam feels it is safe for you to drive.
@@EasyDOTPhysicals thanks for the info doc
Would I pass even if I have hearing aids and a trachea
neither are automatic disqualification
Will a herniated lower disk disqualify me? I'm in no pain and not on any pain needs.
not unless the examiner feels you would be unsafe to drive for some reason.
@@EasyDOTPhysicals no, I feel great. Just wanted to make sure it won't bite me during an exam. Thank you.
I got my dot medical card last year and im on suboxone and i gave them a letter from the prescribing doctor, i have to get my med card renewed, do you think i need another letter if im going to the same doctor?
Yes, you will need to bring a new letter. The medical examiner can't take your word for it that nothing has changed.
Hello, when taking her blood pressure, why didn't you elevate her arm ?
I do only if I get a high reading
The drug urine test is not preformed at the physical?
it can be but not required
Hi
I’m curious to know what the process is when the patient has type 1 diabetes, would you still need the dot first, then take paperwork work to caring doctor to sign off and come back in to verify and then you get the med card
In our clinic you can do it either way. Always best to walk in with the exemption if you can however.
Hello. I have umbilical hernia, will that fail me?
not necessarily
