  • I am on the second episode of The Acolyte. While I won't call it a perfect show, I will say it is getting more hate than it deserves. I think those trashing the show are doing so just for clicks. This is my honest assesment of the show. It's not bad.

If they want new fans, then write new stories, new IPs. Buying a built-in fanbase and then targeting a different market segment can only lead to negative emotions (“hate”)
Did you understand the “love” for Star Wars when Disney bought it? Then you understand the concept of “brand”, and you can see why after a series of bad movies and shows, the latest show is “hated”.
Best way to avoid it is to write the Acolyte as a standalone story. It wouldn’t get 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it also wouldn’t get any viewers. And that reveals that the $180m budget is an investment in brand, not in storytelling excellence.

@@ian-flanagan I have a feeling I’m sitting on a track with a freight train coming. I’m just trying to not hate it. But I am aware of the rule of many and I think that’s the next episode.
I do think the best strategy would have been to cater to the original fans since we are all parents now.

@@thecursingexplorer138 I’m not watching but I doubt it’s bad as people say. I just want to make the point that:
      - the studios consciously choose to go big on franchises, so they can’t then complain when shows are judged together, and not in isolation.
      - humans are emotional and irrational, and it’s the job of companies to deal that that in the most effective way. Blaming their customer base will only make them hate more.
For me, I “hate” the Acolyte because the overall lack of universe-planning has made any individual show within the universe pointless.
The secondary factor is “culture war” sadly. They openly use demographics as marketing fodder and (allegedly) discriminate by demographics on hiring, which goes against the “blind” meritocracy that I consider moral and common sense, and a core part of my culture.
And again, if they push “meta” issues in the marketing (“representation is important for society”), they can’t then complain when criticism of the show is “meta” to the story.
In short, you’re good for trying to judge the story by its own merits, but other people are not wrong for doing otherwise.

@@ian-flanagan completely agree. And I genuinely appreciate your engagement. I originally had no plans on watching the show, but I figured it would be decent content for my channel.
If you are looking for something that stays true to itself. Axel F on Netflix was pretty good. Better than Beverly Hills cop 3.

@@thecursingexplorer138 Oh cool, I’ll give it a try. I’m halfway decided to swear off all sequels and franchises though. Severance was good on Apple, and I haven’t seen much discussion about it
