"To have a future together doesn't require us to pretend that our pasts are the same." -Trevor Noah (The Daily Show) This is by far one of the best quotes I have ever heard in my life.
Yeah but theirs no need to use your past to make it seem like your a slave decades later. In fact over a hundred years later black people still love to talk about slavery as if they lived through it. Get over yourselves, their has been many races who have been made slaves long before you.
Yeah, Jaycee Dugard wasn't "kidnapped" she was "involuntarily invited;" the Charleston churchmembers were not "murdered" by Dylan Roof - he just "assisted in their involuntary suicides."
The sad thing is, if Carson had never been involved in politics, he would have been beloved by the nation. If he'd quit after dropping out of the presidential nomination, his career in politics would have been a long-ignored footnote to an otherwise stellar career saving lives. Now, he (along with most of Trump's staff) looks set to become a weekly punchline. I'm glad that Noah at least acknowledged that Carson's poor choice of words wasn't indicative of him being a complete idiot (like Trump) or a bigoted manoeuvrer (like Bannon), it just showed how ill-equipped for office he is.
*"Normally, a Ben Carson speech is a bedtime story in a suit."* Gosh, I didn't even know Ben Carson (I'm not American or super into US politics), but that is not an understatement wow.
This is the problem - unlike folks like Bannon and Trump, Carson seems like a genuinely decent guy who wants to do some good. Certainly his reputation as a brain surgeon has been inspirational. Regardless, you can't just take an average Joe off the street, even one with a mind like Carson's, and simply expect him to understand the political intricacies of policy, rhetoric, needs of society v rights of the individual, budget issues and - in this case - appropriate language. I could imagine myself making this kind of stuff-up. Someone would correct me, I would apologise, and would be aware of it in the future - end of story. Carson has no such good fortune - he says something like this and will be crucified on the spot, especially as a member of Trump's cabinet.
I can sort of get where he's coming from, he loves America and he's black so he wants to make that somehow compatible with his Republican worldview via use of 'The American Dream' but claiming African slaves were voluntary immigrants who went to seek a better life of their own volition is a bit much. Either he's bad with words or he performed brain surgery on himself. Certainly a lot of Republicans have to have brain damage to support the GOPs outright nefarious agendas given they are the ones who will lose out if/when they are implemented. Cutting education and polluting the water we drink while making healthcare unaffordable? Gee they seem like the party for working Joes, if you want to be a Prole. It's like the GOP read 1984 and thought ''Wow this is such a great idea!''
NewhamMatt - Would you take a job in which you are expected to manage something completely beyond your experience and current abilities? Carson signed up for this, he had a choice. So while I agree you can't take an average Joe off the street and expect him to know these things- then an average Joe should not have the position he currently has. These are complex matters- not just grey matter. 😁
I agree - Carson overestimated himself, as did Trump (although this is the same man that chose people like Jeff Sessions, Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway, so in that company Carson doesn't seem that bad). +Goraka91, Carson did call African Americans "immigrants", but not "voluntary immigrants" - the issue was that Carson believed that if you move from one country into the other, you are immigrating, regardless of purpose or willingness. I'd argue that Noah didn't really prove him wrong, but that wasn't the point - the point was that by calling them "immigrants", Carson effectively equated African American slaves with people who came by choice, and in doing so minimised their suffering.
newham, carson could care less about poor people! carson doesn't even know he's black, that Affirmative Action got him where he is today or that his black ass didn't grow up in a neighborhood full of guns and drugs that his beloved republikkkcan party dumped there! carson can go straight to hell. and I hope that little girl he maimed sues him
It's hard for me to believe that a person who thinks the Egyptians built the pyramids to store grain could be a brain surgeon. Did he give himself a lobotomy?
And later he's going to have to try getting a job with "Trump" on his resume. Aside from a few right-wing koolaid drinkers, I can't imagine anyone who would hire him.
They're still around. They just don't go on videos favoring the 'fake news' anymore instead they double down on the ACTUAL fake news reinforcing their incorrect world views. Like I didn't much care for the American's recent election ''Trump? Eh how bad could he really be it's just another sleazy politician'' but now that's he's been in charge a while I can say YOU FUCKED UP AMERICA.
I have a genuine question... Why is ANY random Joe allowed to run for high office, or be appointed to one? I mean, every other major profession demands qualifications and experience. New rule! you have to serve as a politician for at least 10 years before you can be put in CHARGE of some major shit ! Enough with the mumbling, inexperienced fools!!!!
duchesswannabe I agree with you...I have a BA in International Relations and speak 3 different languages, yet I can't get a job in my profession(politics),because I was very ill for a couple of years.
duchesswannabe the problem has been career politicians, this comment section is extremely cringe-worthy. If you get your news from Comedy Central you are not very well informed.
Joe Nelson If you discount information merely because it comes from a comedy channel you are just as stupid. And yes, you should fact check any suspicious numbers or quotes, obviously. But the real issue here is about career politicians: they suck. It's true. And yet they are better than amateurs who don't know the system and flail around wildly causing mayhem. They are the lesser of two evils.
duchesswannabe actually in China thats how they roll. In china first you have to govern a small city, then you go larger and larger if you are the best.
An even better rule would be that you would have to work in that specific field before becoming responsible for it. E.g. to get Betsy de Vos's job you should have experience working in a school or education system...
I don't think the problem with Carson's speech was just the word "immigrants" that everybody keeps showing him say, but the bit that came afterwards where he made it sound like slaves came to America to provide a better life for their families.
we should take ben carson and force him to work on the opposite side of the planet where no one speaks english or practices christianity, force him to do 16-20 hours a day of manual labor, force him to learn the regions religion whether he wants to or not along with their language, and any time he even remotely acts out or slacks off he gets the shit kicked out of him, and he gets barely enough food to live on and a tiny shack to call home, and its no problem, why? because clearly he's there willingly and he's getting fed and housed for free and he loves it, if he says he doesn't? well then he doesn't know what he's talking about
The problem is they can't acknowledge the US weren't always the best, greatest, most awesome place (and, although it became much better, still aren't). Slavery isn't a family vacation.
Alias Anybody nobody said it was a vacation, a vacation is not immigrating, whether forced or not moving to a new country permanently is immigrating. Everyday there is some new "outrage" over semantics that the left gets off on. Truly sad and a waste of time.
I guess he knows. He just wanted to blame the "left" for something. Here he intentionaly misunderstood ur comment and gave a useless reply. Its funny though, he blars about the "outrage" over semantics of the actual administration, but yet takes his time to go to the comment section and lament over your choice of words.
I can't fanthom how idiotic people are the people who give shit to Carson about this. His phrase is correct in every sense possible : Immigrants came to America, and people that come to another country to live there permanently are immigrants. Saying this is strong because it contrasts the American Dream with the reality of slave immigration. Which is why it sounded so strongly in Obama's mouth. Despicable show
He's one of the greatest physicians of the past century. History has nothing to do with medicine. Please stop with your disrespect. He is a good man and highly intelligent - just a terrible politician and in need of a black history lesson. But even so, I'm sure he has done far more good for this world through his brain surgery than anyone commenting here on RUclips.
"What, I'm leaving!" "Oooh...sorry." "I'm calling a lawyer!" "Yeah, no, sorry." "Priest? Police? Appeal to basic humanity?" "I don't think you're getting how this works."
I'm going just say this to anybody trying to "explain" how my ancestors got here and what they were or were not called back then and now. I've been black 65 years in this country and racism is still here and we are still thpught of as "non human" and that we should go back to where we come from. So funny! I'm from East Texas! Now as to folk talking about indentured servants, ok, well if they were believe me any land etc. That they thought they owned got taken/stolen back, plenty of history on this happening. Any black/ african taken from theur country and brought to America against their will.... Were Slaves! Period! None of them were FREE citizens. There is no debate on it, I grew up in the era with the signs that said " whites only bathroom" and " colored bathroom" white water fountain" colored water fountain" and going to the back of a building to get food cause black folk could not enter the front door of an establishment! Oh and white only laundromats! I just can't listen to folk who havent lived our lives call themselves educating a black person on being black in America!! Our Ancestors were " Slaves"! They did not decide to just flee their country to sail over here to be " Slaves"! Are you kidding me? Can you not get that? Oh and we are still experiencing the effects of slavery its just done in more subtle way now. For Ben Carson to say we were immigrants... No to the hell we were not. If you read it all, I appreciate that. Ms. Johnson
conor o callaghan read his book. it will probably explain to you why he knows so much american stuff. american movies everywhere are known in all different kinds of countries which is why there is the notion of the "american dream" and hollywood
I am European and I can confirm that we DO get almost every American movie here too. We don't only watch our own movies.... I'm Italian and on cinemas we get 60% American movies, 35% Italian movies, and 5% from other countries. Especially if you include Disney, Warner Bros, DreamWorks &co.
I used to have huge respect for Carson but if he can tell the difference between a slave and an immigrant then I wonder what he knows about housing and development 🤦♂️🤦♂️
The difference between a slave and an inmigrant: a slave is a person who's someone's property, while an inmigrant is a person who comes from abroad. Therefore, a person who's someone's property and comes from abroad is both a slave and an inmigrant. Carson can't tell the difference between an involuntary inmigrant and a voluntary one, but he knows what an inmigrant and what a slave are.
Connie B. And they were people regardless of how they were viewed (property) so using today's context and applying it to then, means they were indeed immigrants. Back then they may not have used that term, but today we do not view these people as property because we know they were people. So what's the hooplah about again? Oh right a republican in trumps administration said something. Sic em!
"To have a future together doesn't require us to pretend that our pasts were the same." Intersectionality. Beautifully put. Can I have the name of the writer who put that in the monologue?
You all disgrace yourself labeling someone like Dr Carson because you don't agree with his politics. You are just as bad as some of the racist who labeled us animals off nothing but a feeling. Dr Carson mother couldn't read or write but she looked at what worked in the white home that she worked in and made Dr Carson and his sibling study as they did. He is one of the best stories of rising out of poverty that we have. You should be giving his book to every mother of young black men you can find but you don't want his story to help somebody you want to destroy it. We can't elevate as at race this way in my opinion.
Well said, Mr. Noah: "To have a future together doesn't require us to pretend that our pasts are the same." Keep us looking with clear eyes at history and at the present in order to make a decent future.
War criminal Obama is not black inside. Involuntary is very inappropriate word for slavery. We do our daily jobs, a lot of, involuntarily. we dont like it but forced to do it. Slavery is extreme brutality. Slaves were things not human being. So, So, doctors-poets-farmers etc were forcefully made slave and brought to USA. Colonial monsters did not bring slaves. They made the people slaves.
As a professional public manager in my country, I have been asking similar questions in years... how can someone take a job - say Secretary of Education - with ZERO previous experience in education or management?
Angie, get ready bc when the republikkkcan swamp repeals the Minimum Wage Law, you will be $1.00/step away from slavery! Affirmative Action Laws. Repealed by republikkkcans. Voting Rights Acts. slowly being chipped away by republikkkcans. Redistricting. enacted by republikkkcans to get more republikkkcans elected. Stop and Frisk. Law and Order. lastly, the republikkkcans privatized prisons and locked up black man after black man, poor man after poor man putting them to work for cents on the dollar. Google Peonage System.
Amazing...I really almost fell asleep just listening to him. We need to make a white noise machine that just plays his voice. Insomnia would be WAY down.
Lapis Gamer the first slaveship arrived in 1619. the declaration of independence was signed 1776. Africans were here before the United States was a country.
As an English student, this reminds me of the dynamic differences in these words: die, killed, suicide, slaughter, manslaughter, execute, massacre and murder. They all seem to be talking about lifelessness or the act of taking life, but you don't use them in the same context. For example someone who is killed by an armed robber can't be said to have committed suicide. For the record, slaves aren't immigrants!
lobomuerto11 Europe fucked them over completely with colonialism, didn't leave stable governments in place when they left, and arbitrarily divided Africa up into countries that ignored tribal borders and basically gave ethnic and tribal warfare a head start.
And Harriet Tubman ran successful travel agency
Lol 😂
bruh
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ben Carson a fool and a tom

Brian C *assisted in their involuntary suicide* that cracked me up! 😂😂😂
Brian C *_In the mind of Ben Carson..._*
briliant! xD
Brian C it's not kidnapping.. it's surprise adoption.. SUPRISE!!!
@@a_diamond 😂🤣😂🤣😂
It's actually kind of nice that Trevor Noah called out Dr. Carson without being totally unfair and hostile.
@Oober Goober
Aww poor kid!!!
YA THINK ?

Thank you Trevor Noah for not biasing. As much as I respect Obama, his speech-writer and himself kinda fucked up....
lobomuerto11 yup the hypocrisy is annoying
And and hes black yet so uneducated over his own history. That's just sad on so many levels!
He just said " immigrants at the bottom of slave ships" 🤨😢
Is it me or Noah keeps getting better?
Sergio Lefebvre I don't think you get better. Noah gets better.
I am not sure if he is getting better or the government just got easier to make fun of
yeah.he keeps getting wetter
Sergio Lefebvre why u say that in every of his video
He's OK. For an Affirmative Action hire.
I loved the siri
'Oh HELL no'
Siri----" Oh hell no!" 😂
Holly B I want the app baaaaad! Siri with “ flavah” Oh hell yeah!
Why does Ben Carson always sound like he just hit the blunt
More like crack, cause he sounds brainless.
trump gave him some WhiteHouse Ambien.
This show is the best
Not even close.
EXOT1C HD John Oliver is a better talk show. And in terms of shows in general, Rick and Morty and Bojack Horseman beat it by a longshot.
True Pride what do you mean.
*"Normally, a Ben Carson speech is a bedtime story in a suit."*
Gosh, I didn't even know Ben Carson (I'm not American or super into US politics), but that is not an understatement wow.
He is a surgeon, no wonder why it's that way🙄
everyone is entitled to be stupid every now and then. but trump voters abused that privilege last November.
sigh

Thank goodness for youtube as we don't get the privilege of seeing this show. Love ya Trevor Noah
"To have a future together doesn't require us to pretend that our pasts are the same" - That is one beautiful quote right there.
...so where have all the Trump supporters gone? Could have sworn there were more of them around just a few weeks ago...
Vytautas Danielius They just now realise how fuck we all are thanks to them.
They're still around. They just don't go on videos favoring the 'fake news' anymore instead they double down on the ACTUAL fake news reinforcing their incorrect world views. Vytautas Danielius there's a few of them on Facebook
Oh they're still around........... (sigh) just give it time.
Vytautas Danielius Pfft I dare them to agree with this shit. Then we can prove that they are dumbasses
Thank you Trevor. This is an absolutely fantastic piece.

I'm very impressed that they showed the Obama clip. Makes me know I'm seeing both sides of the story.
Ben Carson ate an edible before this speech. 😂
Nikkirenae8 P. rumour has it he's still pausing between his last sentence and what he's going to whisper next.
Actually, he eats edibles before every speech.
"To have a future together doesnt require us to pretend our past were the same"
Damn trevor awesome senior quote/pick up line there.
If Ben Carson was in 1950s Mississippi, he'd be telling the other blacks that the back of the bus isn't so bad.
😃😀😃😄
I don't think the problem with Carson's speech was just the word "immigrants" that everybody keeps showing him say, but the bit that came afterwards where he made it sound like slaves came to America to provide a better life for their families.

LeafyHotDog Spoken like a self-righteous hypocrite. When's the last time you did all of that. Or have you ever left your parents basement?
Drunken Mongoose You could not have missed the point more spectacularly if you had tried (which perhaps you did).
Yeah! Let’s force him to be a slave! That’ll show how ‘good’ and right we are!
Drunken Mongoose r/woooosh
You can tell its a very touchy topic for him, he spoke so passionately about it.
did he ever find his luggage?
Bryan Nieves Is that where he kept his brains.
Trevor...a better title would have been:
Doctor Deranged
love your show trevor !!
Weren’t paid - OWNED, BRED, TORTURED, TERRORIZED...🤬
And the Amistad case was about customer service on a cruise ship. #AlternativeFactsAreLies
*GIVE US US FREE!!*
It was simply a case of a cruise passenger seating complaint gone wrong....Ben Carson revisonary title: "Mean Immigrants!"
Lol 😂
*Pulls out dictionary*
"Siri, is a space an immigrant?"
aaronam0115 you mean a slave?

Despicable show
Damn. *"To have a future together doesn't require us to pretend that our pasts are the same"*
Trevor's speechwriter didn't f* up ey
Ok....first Dr. Carson lost his lugguage...NOW he loses his damn mind!
Michael Rivers, honestly I think you reversed the order of those events. After all, he only lost his luggage after he started supporting Trump. ;)
That's why it took him so long to realize his luggage was gone. He only then realized he left his brain in the jar.
Michael Rivers or his brain was with the luggage
He's not mad, he's just asleep... does his speech pattern make you think of someones who's woke?
Michael Rivers I saw you on a Stephen Colbert video!
Well said, Trevor Noah! It's simply not the same...never will be
Curtis Baker
Apparently he was asleep in his history class.
I just watched "get out" and we should really check for scares on his head.
I love how Trevor Noah give a new light on recent news. We are able to understand events better.
"There were other immigrants, who came here at the bottom of slave ships..."
Wow, that's a really harsh way to speak about european tourists...

Noooooooo. Speech writer did f-up. Yes Trevor! Preach.
4:10 - "To have a future together doesn't require us to pretend our pasts are the same" - Brilliantly put and applicable on so many levels

Harriet Tubman would have shot Ben Carson, Reloaded And Shot Him Again
Lol
Yep...yep
Hell yeah
I love how everyone laughed when he said "I love Ben Carson"
wow... Trevor... always on point...
Not immigrants, because slaves weren't considered to be people. In order to be an immigrant, you have to be a person.
Connie B. And they were people regardless of how they were viewed (property) so using today's context and applying it to then, means they were indeed immigrants. Back then they may not have used that term, but today we do not view these people as property because we know they were people. So what's the hooplah about again? Oh right a republican in trumps administration said something. Sic em!
+Joe Nelson because that's rewriting history.
"Bedtime story in a suit." Lol! 🤣 I'm dead!
Ben Carson is on something , I swear.
this guys awesome, best show every :D
Trevor:Siri Is slave an Emigrant
Siri: Oh Hell no!!
Trevor Noah is the man...
According to my college textbook, immigration is, by definition, voluntary.
How about AFTER the slave is freed? Does he make a voluntary choice then?!?
"To have a future together doesn't require us to pretend that our pasts were the same." Intersectionality. Beautifully put. Can I have the name of the writer who put that in the monologue?
"UNCLE BEN" SHOWS HIS TRUE SIDE... GLAD WE NEVER VOTED FOR HIM.
Obama's speech directly said that slavery was involuntary
War criminal Obama is not black inside. Involuntary is very inappropriate word for slavery. We do our daily jobs, a lot of, involuntarily. we dont like it but forced to do it. Slavery is extreme brutality. Slaves were things not human being. So, So, doctors-poets-farmers etc were forcefully made slave and brought to USA. Colonial monsters did not bring slaves. They made the people slaves.
I would really want to see Trevor vs Ben Sapiro
I am so done....
He didn't ignore the difference he referenced it in the quote.
This guy is a national treasure 😂
And yet noone saying the basics: since when being a surgeon qualifies someone to a managerial job in habitation policy?
As a professional public manager in my country, I have been asking similar questions in years... how can someone take a job - say Secretary of Education - with ZERO previous experience in education or management?
Force immigration doesn't coincide with optional immigration.
Wrong words Carson
True
I like how the title even had to respond on this statement
If we don't understand our history we are destined to repeat it!
Truth.!!!!! I Absolutely love Trevor
the doference with Obama is that he said " They had not come here voluntarily"", those few words make a big diference
That trailer for Get Out at the end was cool xD
American healthcare system sucks...🤔 This guy's a brain surgeon hmmn 😕..
The handmaids tale preview that popped up before this video was interesting.
How did he pass Med School
I just noticed that he does look at the end. I trusted you Trevor!!
He's probably suffering sugar overdose from those Oreos? (PS written in 2019)
"Aw, _HELL_ NAW!"
-Siri, 2k17
..that their azz are historically disadvantaged..lmao..I luv Trevor..funny man!
lol....trevor is getting better
I can't believe he is the same Dr Carson who inspired me to become a neurosurgeon. He is with Trump? Ohh God
Amazing...I really almost fell asleep just listening to him. We need to make a white noise machine that just plays his voice. Insomnia would be WAY down.
Africans were here before the United States was a country
Lapis Gamer the first slaveship arrived in 1619. the declaration of independence was signed 1776. Africans were here before the United States was a country.
Africans are native americans lmao. They had african hair too afros too
As an English student, this reminds me of the dynamic differences in these words: die, killed, suicide, slaughter, manslaughter, execute, massacre and murder. They all seem to be talking about lifelessness or the act of taking life, but you don't use them in the same context. For example someone who is killed by an armed robber can't be said to have committed suicide. For the record, slaves aren't immigrants!
Can't wait for the trumplings to compare him to the Obama quote, and use it as logic forever
Another Made Up Internet Subculture doesn't matter. Trump supporters will ignore that part
lobomuerto11 cause most are still recovering from slavery and being ruled by European countries.
lobomuerto11
Europe fucked them over completely with colonialism, didn't leave stable governments in place when they left, and arbitrarily divided Africa up into countries that ignored tribal borders and basically gave ethnic and tribal warfare a head start.
i just accepted a challenge too 😁 haha & love the different ways u tell people to subscribe at the end of all the videos loll hilarious
