They are very versatile. We started using them on the lakes in the south (where they were designed, originally for Largemouth) We brought them up to Boston while fishing with Joe Marciano in 2015 and actually caught as many Fluke as we did Stripers. We slayed the Stripers on the Raritan that same year, but kept them under lock and key until we just HAD to show them in the videos. It’s funny, the spoon is the oldest fishing lure, yet this re-design made it feel fresh and new. Check this video out from Lake Lanier July 2015. ruclips.net/video/uvHV35lR3XY/видео.html
The general unwritten rule for fishing once the bite dies move is the best thing. Maybe after you covored several spots at the end of your trip just to try for like 5 minutes go back to spot at the end you enitially caught fish.

The slow pitch jigging rods are Rich Coulson rods. His info is in the description. The spinning rods are Wright and McGill but I wouldn’t recommend them for jigging, they were way too long and stiff. That’s all we had at that time.
Best way to feel a tick on line from any lure once you casted your line out exactly where you want it being sure to feather your spool an for the bad casters never ever over hand cast with over hanging trees. Also you don't need to wind arm way back . Also you don't need to bring your arm way out to the side when side arm casting. 1st line rod tip up exactly where you want lure or soft plastic. 2 bring arm in slightly then out to cast doing this very carefully an fast short fast snapping type motion helping rod to flex. Over hand cast keep rod but about waist level keep rod tip at a 10 o'clock range pull rod quickly toward you slightly not much towards you then back out to starting point very fast but carefully. You move rod quickly but not hard just a fast back an forth movement not moving your arm alot so rod flexes to throw lure. Always line the rod tip up where you want lure to go bring rod tip towards your left or right shoulder fast then back to 10 o'clock position an lure will go flying exactly where you want. Importantly if your just starting move slower you may not get as far maybe only a 1/4 to 1/2 the distance but that's ok you want accuracy. Lastly just before lure hits water gently raise rod tip when your lure is 12 inches or alittle more above water so lure hits water softer. Generally that's why it's best to side arm cast line tip up where you want lure bring rod tip towards you very fast slightly then back to starting point. 1 the lure will splash less 2 its closer to water an you can still cast a mile.
Those are some massive bunker spoons! Why did you use steel on a few setups & not fluorocarbon? Were you expecting Bluefish possibly? Wasn't sure where you were fishing
Some days we have blues in the area. They generally won’t hit the wire when they first hook up but other blues will follow and swipe at the spoon that the hooked fish is shaking. THATS when they cut you off. This Spring was insane, almost every day was fish after fish. The wire didn’t scare anything off, especially in that dark muddy water.

Tough out of my kayak… Love the technique (thanks) but rod length and sitting so close to water make the technique tough to master if not consistent. Any suggestions?
I agree. That’s a tough one. My buddy Alan Batista fishes out of a kayak. He wrote a few books on fishing the Chesapeake. He uses short butt rods so the rod doesn’t get hung on his PFD, but I am thinking that a long butt rod that is 7’ long instead of 6’6” might be best. You won’t be able to move the rod up and down as easily so the extra length should help. I’m thinking the two handed sideways jigging motion would be easiest. One hand just above the reel and the other on the butt. The hand at the reel being the fulcrum while pumping the butt up and down. We have had several kayak fishermen paddle up to talk and get some spoons from us so I know it can be done. It’s just a little tricky. What do you think?
Thanks for the quick response… yea I’ve moved from the short to long butt and had to adjust my jigging motion… the sideways motion is a “back-wrencher”! Throw in slight wave swell and it’s gonna make it worse. Thanks for responding and your vids!
Have you tried a slow pitch rod? We use rods that we had designed to be way easier on the body than typical rods. They are extremely soft, short and balanced with a weight system in the butt to keep the tips light. We literally just fished with a 72 year old man that suffered a stroke one year ago. We weren’t in a kayak, but he fished 2 straight full days and jigged all day long. My rods are my signature rods by Rich Coulson if you’d like to get one, but there are several good slow pitch rods on the market that will behave similarly. Accurate makes a good one. I’d stay with medium light power. 👍
Mike I’ve asked a few times but know you get swamped with inquiries. Lol. How would you fish for strippers at night on a lake like Texoma. Lures of course. Not a live bait fisherman much.
Right now I would fish main lake points with jigs, spoons, Alabama rigs and trolling umbrella rigs. Fish will be up shallow on points early and late in the day. Fish the deeper side mid day. You should be able to Mark them. 👍👍
The mark will look more like an arch or a line (depending on speed) bait will look more like blobs. I have a few sonar for dummies videos that cover it in greater detail. Check em out.
BBA jerseys. I’ve had them made before by other companies and they were always pretty good, but BBA was miles above. They had a half dozens designs for me to look at in a day’s time and they were all really awesome. The other companies took forever and did one design at a time like they didn’t want to do more work than absolutely necessary. Here’s the email. jimmy@bbajerseys.com. 👍👍
Hey Mike, great content like ALWAYS. I love my CTF rods. But where I striper fish, we have to make crazy long casts. 2oz jig heads with 5” swim baits on 40lb braid. 80 yards isn’t uncommon. The 7’6” rods just don’t have the stiffness and whip I need to make the casts because of their length. However, they are perfect for float and drift fishing. I really wish CTF would make 9 footers. I’d sell every other non-bass rod I own to buy them. Is there another rod you can recommend for continuous distance casting? ~9 feet, Extra heavy action, slow/medium tip would be perfect.
Yep, you’re right about that. They aren’t really made for casting. I have been helping them design a casting rod, but with Covid everything is a mess. I’m not sure if they will make a Rod over 7’6” because the shipping cost like triples for tubes over that size. It would have to be 2 pieces. I can’t think of a particular casting rod to recommend in that size. I do have a few Wright and McGill 8.5 ft spinning rods that cast great. They are the Blair Wiggins models. They might have casting versions too. Thanks for the kind words brother!
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Well I looked around. Not made anymore. Lew’s picked up the Blair Willis line. Might be an improvement as their tech has always produced a lighter rod. Just got off the phone with a friend who is a writer/photographer and designs baits for 6th Sense and he said to check out Vexan. Said they are super sensitive and crazy strong rods. Guys in Florida are boat flipping 10lb largemouth with them. Since they also make inshore and offshore rods up to XXH, may give them a shot. Keep us posted about CTF. Appreciate your reply. Tight lines and smooth sails brother.

I’ve asked a few times but know you get swamped with inquiries.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS awesome. Would this pattern work at night. Trying to beat the heat with my new medication
For night I would still fish points but pound the bank up really shallow with Alabama rigs. ❤️
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS awesome brother. I really appreciate it
👍👍
I have never targeted striper. My question is how do you know when its a striper or not on the sonar ?
The mark will look more like an arch or a line (depending on speed) bait will look more like blobs. I have a few sonar for dummies videos that cover it in greater detail. Check em out.
Where did you get the hoodie's made at
BBA jerseys. 👍👍
Hey mike I cant find the redi rig planer floats anywhere. Any suggestions where I may find them?
Straight from RediRig is the fastest.
Cool. Thanks brother
Have you looked into musky rods? St.Croix makes a MOJO Musky casting rod like you're describing...but they're pricey.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS even when you use the yoyo technique obviously I need slack on line for spoon to flutter. Hey brother quick question you ever catch a striper in your not so typical place for striper besides the mouths of rivers an points edges an drop spots that boarders the ocean an also bluffs an transitions that are bordering the ocean like spots in ponds that boarder a river? Just wondering if you ever caught a striper in a pond that boarders a river or a creek that the point of creek boarders the main river. Be cool if show with a map on screen typical spots to find striper. Sorry for babbling on I'm trying to learn about fishing striper
Incredible
Great catches!
Thanks brother!!
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Love all your videos Mike! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I know many people don't. It's a shame you only have 55k subscribers. Should be well over 100k
I appreciate that brother! 👍👍👍👍
Mike, Who makes those spoons? Thanks
Here ya go!! Nichols Lures. amzn.to/32x6lZk
Crush the barbs on them hooks, fellas. Makes unhooking so much easier.
Agreed. I actually bent them all halfway down.
"Illegal move. Hugged his brother" - Nice! Lol.
🤣🤣
Where are you guys fishing?
Raritan Bay.
How do you mark fish going that fast
You can learn what fish look like at higher speeds with practice. Next time you are marking schools of fish, try running over them at different speeds and make note of what they look like. It’s just time on the water. 👍👍.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I have a reservoir rig so my top speed is 7. I definitely notice a difference in the sonar and di at different speeds but it's a tricky thing. Those ben parker spoons are sick. Big largemouth love em. Love your videos
MY MAN MIKE... Y'ALL NOT PLAYING 2DAY NICE ACTION 🐟🐟🐟... IS THIS KERR LAKE ??
Thanks Tim!! This is actually saltwater up in NJ, but theses spoons are awesome in freshwater lakes like Kerr. They were actually designed for freshwater.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS THANKS MIKE !! 12 FT OF WATER Y'ALL PUT A HURTING ON THEM STRIPERS... I NEVER SEEN FISHING LINE ON A SONAR ... 👍👌👍👌

Those spoons look deadly where do I get
Here ya go brother!! amzn.to/32x6lZk
Hi Mike. I can’t find the exact style of spoons that you you guys used. Can you guide me to the website please? Thanks in advance Mike.
Sure. Here ya go! amzn.to/32x6lZk
Hi Mike. Thanks for the link. I noticed that your has feathers by the hooks . Is that something you put on yourself?
@@chiluong6677 They came like that.
Great video Mike. Very instructional, I've been trolling stripers for years with much success out of Barnegat Inlet but have never tried jigging spoons. Will be giving it a shot, looks a lot more fun than trolling....
Keep up the great work.
Thanks brother!! It’s a blast. Especially when you bring someone new out. They totally light up when they whack into one with a spoon. They feel like they really done something to catch that fish. 👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS you should be getting commissions on the sales of those spoons, lol...
@@wsavinovich Ha!! Bro it’s been crazy. Amazon has been struggling to keep them in stock. They are legit brother!! We started using them in the lakes when they first came out and they were good. Not GREAT but really good. In salt they are nuts!
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS just picked up three today at a shop by me. Can’t wait to use them this weekend…
@@wsavinovich cool. Let me know how you do. 👍👍what you think.
You feel a tick by keeping finger tip on line at all times. Sorry forgot to write that I suck at writing always did oops 😆😆🤷♂️
I always say a tight line with plenty of slack lol
EXACTLY!! 😁😁
Looks like you guys found a honey pot of a spot for stripers
The guide needs to keep his mouth shut. It’s all about him, not the fishing.
That’s funny. I’m not a guide. I make instructional fishing videos on this channel. This is one of them.😁
I live in South Carolina, will the lures and techniques that you use work here?
