If you're like me, you're about at your wits end. It's been far too long, and you're starting to doubt your existence with other people who are doing something you can't.
Welcome to another infamous video about the LEGENDARY FISH YOU CAN'T CATCH.
Why is it that every single time you scroll across a RUclips video for this specific problem, everyone is explaining the same exact thing in a couple different words?
They seem to achieve the seemingly insignificant task in a couple of minutes; the same task you've been at for hours, if not DAYS!
And all they tell you is, "just stand here, cast your rod there, and make sure you have the right bait and you should get it!"
Look, if you're watching this video after all of those ones, and you've been playing the game for awhile, I'm not gonna sit here and treat you like an idiot who doesn't understand the
basic mechanics of the game thus far.
But I almost guarantee you, you're going to feel like one anyway before the end of the video.
There's obviously a common problem here, where people are being forced back to the same location on the map in order to just check that one small part off of their list.
Whether it be part of the legendary fish quest, or an attempt at making an even smaller step to a greater milestone of 100 percenting the game.
Plenty of people have reported this same problem, enough to get attention, or at least feel like you're not drowning alone.
Well you can stop worrying now, you're no longer part of the no "legendary smallmouth bass" club.
If you've done your best and walked at all different points around the area (which I'm sure you have); used a boat to get out to deeper areas, used your focus to try and see the fish
PHYSICALLY in the water, but nothing's happened? Here's what's wrong.
The failure is not in the game, it's not in your ability to catch the fish; it's not your eyesight... but rather, your memory has failed you.
For me, this problem occurred with the Legendary Smallmouth Bass.
1. Press the pause button relative to your platform and scroll down to progress
2. Open the copendium
3. slide over two tiles to the Fish section
4. flip the page and low and behold, the second tile down, farthest to the left shows the Legendary Smallmouth Bass.
But wait, the map says I haven't caught it yet?
So, I'll have to take back what I said before, it's a mixture of the game letting us down, along with your memory.
You've caught the monster fish before, you just didn't remember. However, the game isn't doing it's job and marking it off your map as it would with another legendary animal or fish.
There are a few notes here:
-this was experienced on PC; this version has only been out a year and a half, but I've also seen forums speaking about the issue of not being able to catch
the fish on Playstation dating back over a year ago.
-This is the only problem I've had so far with legendary fish; I've read other multiple fish (like the gar or legendary muskie) that are also elusive. I hypothesize that
this is also the case for those that can't be caught. Just double check.
And that's it. That's all it's ever been. If this was your last stop and you finally "caught" the fish you've been struggling to catch; good for you. Welcome to the club.
Now you only have to hope your OCD doesn't get in the way of it not being marked off the map for however long that might be...

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an action-adventure game developed and published by Rockstar Games. Ok But What If I Haven’t Caught The Fish Yet And It’s Not In My Compendium. When Did Everyone Else Catch It?
@@fabian5813 it was a mission I believe where you go with Uncle or someone a rather like that. I remember someone in camp wants you to fish with them a lot or a couple times when your camp is in the Rhodes area. Maybe it doesn’t mark it off your map if you haven’t started ‘Fisher of Fish’ yet like myself I didn’t start it until chapter 6 tuberculosis Arthur and it’s also not marked off my map but I also can’t find the fish either. I just hope they respawn on the John play through

thank you for this i have been trying evveryday for 20 minutes for about a month to catch the legendary Muskie, and i saw this and said to myself while watching this "this probably isnt true and low and behold there it was, crying laughing right now.
I literally did everything around this lake in my mission to be able to catch this fish. I got perfect beaver pelts, enough flight feathers to fly a jet, a cave drawing I didn’t even know was there, I pushed a fisherman in the water and shot him in anger that I couldn’t catch this fish all to find out I’m literally an idiot. Thank you though 😂 not to mention catching like 50 muskies.
I catch this fish within minutes every game. Wonder if thos issue varies by platform. There are others I have not been able to hook yet..

I thought I was loosing my mind! Thank you so much! I was so sure I caught the legendary Legendary Longnose Gar but the map showed I hadn't caught it yet. Obviously wasn't able to catch it again, but I never checked the compendium. For me it's the same with the Legendary Muskie AND the Legendary Smallmouth Bass where I actually forgot I caught them already like you said. So THANK YOU!

Well, I checked. I didn’t catch it - it’s not in my compendium. But every fish in that lake is biting EXCEPT for the legendary smallmouth bass. Thank you, anyways

Omg. I can’t even believe how spot on you were in your intro description about how frustrated I was and how I was feeling and what I had been doing hahaha.
That location is so bugged, it shows you have not caught the fish but it does show in the list. Hopefully there will be a fix at some point in the future.
100%. I don't think it will, though. It seems that branch of Rockstar's top priority is the multiplayer aspect and they're not even good at THAT.
It’s mot just that location. It happened with my lake sturgeon.
When I first play it back in 2018 it cross out on the map but now I'm guessing its bug lmao

I've been trying to catch that damn legendary largemouth bass (a-hole brother of the smallmouth) for literally days! 🤦🏻♂️ I tried a few dozen spots, at night, during the day, rain, sand storm, different special baites, tried different tips from the internet... nothing! Just MANY, MANY regular largemouth bass... I almost called it quits, until I found your video. I thought "nah, I didn't catch that fish, it's not crossed out on the map, so how could I?" I checked the compendium, and lo and behold, there he was, that sneaky little bugger...

*Sigh* When the video began it really hit close to home when you talked about not being able to catch the legendary fish no matter what bait you use, where you stand, how long you wait, etc. Everyone told me the same thing “Use the correct bait and wait a few minutes you will get it” but that wasn’t the case. I literally tried for 4 or 5 hours last night to catch the legendary gar and could not for the life of me catch it! Kept moving and getting on the boat and this thought didn’t even cross my mind, thank you for saving my sanity!!!

Here’s my theory on why certain legendary fish sometimes don’t get X’d off the map once you catch them: I just caught this legendary fish during the Epilogue. I took a stagecoach to valentine to try to mail the fish after stowing it on my horse, but once I got to Valentine, the fish was no longer on the horse, and the fish was no longer X’d out on the map, and nor could I mail the fish, although maybe that’s because this is in the Epilogue. I’m wondering if taking the stagecoach before you mail the legendary fish is what causes the glitch?
I didn't pay great attention, but I guess that could be a working theory. Still annoying that it's such a prominent issue.

I got this same issue with the longnose gar, the only reason I found out about it was because I checked my log and saw that it was ticked off the list, if it wasn’t for that I would’ve probably sat there for hours trying to catch a fish that no longer exists lmao

Not in my case. First fish. Legendary bluegill, the one the game hands to you. All prerequisites and conditions checked: fish mission active, correct place, correct lure, morning, night, or rain, boat or shore. All I ever get are bass. It's not that I caught it and the game failed to mark it. It's that it's never there to catch. I'm done with legendary fishing. It's a complete crock.
But then how are you gonna 100% the game???

Two tips try to fish on the body of the fish drawing and two go to setting if you’re on console and change the setting of reeling in to x or square it’ll make it so much easier

I swear when I did my first playthrough on ps4 back in 2018. You could see the legendary fish with dead eye or eagle vision?
But on my 2nd playthrough recently they don't stand out over the other fish anymore.

@@justsomekid6847 if you’ve died before mailing the fish you’ve got to wait a couple of in game days then it should respawn. If not try loading a previous save.

You need the special lure to catch the legendary fishes, big or small, it has to be special lure (special lures are sold by the lady in Lagras, and I think Mason gave you one normal lure when you helped him taking pictures of the alligators, the store is unlocked after that, then you can buy special lures, in chapter 2). I catch most of them in the first try (the mechanics are there but to use it at the right moment is your freedom to do. Change the reel-in with the "X" button instead rotating the right stick would help). You need the legendary fish map after taking Jack out fishing, the map is unlocked, and you get it from the dude by the boat house near Rhode. There are legendary fish (Norther Pike, Bullhead Catfish, Blue Gill) you cannot catch until the you are in the new map, or you must follow the story missions. The big legendary fish will chase the special lure down, so it helps just to cast it near to shore, so you don't have to reel it in from a distance. That cut down fighting time to 1/4. Release the "X' button when they run. Pull up (yank the pole up and reel in) when they are not running, this also land them when they are close. I play on Steam PC, so on the console it may glitch out. I hope this help.
Thank you man, I remember catching this fish before but not being able to sell it and after forgetting to save I lost the fish. I looked on the map and it said I hadn't caught the stupid fish
...this is like when you get into a screaming match about who has the remote when you're the one unknowingly sitting on it.
I caught the Gar (apparently) a couple months back. However, not only does it not show up on my map as uncrossed, the little picture never showed up at all.
I assumed I had misremembered the location I needed to trigger it and was running all over Lakay and Lagras today...well, anyway, thank you for pointing this very simple and embarrassing thing out to me.
After playing multiple runs of RDR2 since 2018, I still end up doing this.

@@goldengio6520 I just started fishing in the area, and eventually got a bite from the legendary fish. I recommend going to the fish shop in the bayou and buying the special fish lure to catch it easier. But of course make sure you have done the Jeremy Gill quest

you don’t get to mail it, unfortunately. i think you still get the achievement, but you won’t be able to mail it in for money. this doesn’t affect the outcome of the mission, tho

Bruh I caught that fish, put it on my horse and it literally disappeared off the back of the horse. There was an X on it as if I caught, but later the map was updated showing I didn't catch it.

When you go fishing with keiran in chapter 3 (clemens point) after he leaves a massive fish will appear and that the legendary small mouth bass. Don’t know why it spawns there but you can catch it but it will be listed as a regular small mouth bass
Saw this the other day. Spent a long time trying to catch it, used every bait/lure, no luck. Shot it with my revolver then picked it up. When it said it was a regular smallmouth i was like "wtf, ive caught tones of smallmouth, they're nowhere near this big"... i tought my game bugged, nice to know it happened to others too
Well i love how rockstar is sooo ontop of fixing fun glitches but wont fix actual errors that affect completion. My issue was that the small mouth is crossed off on the map, says i caught it, but doesnt show as caught when i check the "tasks" menu.

Yep, it's already in my compendium. Only caught 100s of muskies though. Mr Gill gives reward after 10 legendary fish - maybe this is why?

Arthur/John catches this fish as part of a mission for Hamish Sinclair; that’s why it’s not one of the thirteen required by Jeremy Gill.
Maybe that’s why it doesn’t get crossed off the map. Similarly, maybe the Legendary Bluegill doesn’t get crossed from the map if you catch it when fishing with Kieran Duffy.
um actually ☝️🤓 that’s the great northern pike, not the Legendary Smallmouth Bass as shown in the video.
ain’t gotta complicate it my guy, literally thousands of people have had the same issue here - it’s just an unpatched glitch.
I have never had a instance where I couldn't catch any legendary fish, short of the legendary catfish.
4:20 when i lost all hope but in the same time hooked the smallmouth platinum baby
I tried everything on that damn lake. I walked all the way round it. I rowed all the way round it. I tried at all different times of the night and day. I went back numerous times. Finally I noticed a fish man's rod propped up by a rock near the bridge. As soon as I cast at that exact spot I got the legendary fish. Game developers obviously decided to make this legendary fish a bummer to catch.
Oh my God, thank you. I've been sitting in Lagras for so long. It didn't occur to me that the map wouldn't be updated (PS4).

I see the fish, I've hooked it often, but he always breaks the line. Even when I'm not reeling him in. It just breaks. Every time.
I caught about 12 20lb Muskie trying to catch the Sockeye Salmon. I got tired of cooking them , I started leaving them on the ice, after a session where I didn’t have any luck ,I came back and a couple were just bones
Yes! I did catch the wild salmon back in 2020 and spent 2 hours Jan 2024 trying to catch it and not spawning. A big huge THANK YOU!

I play on PS4 and it's 2021 and the same thing happened with the Small Mouth Bass but I realized that I had caught it already after trying 5 times
Ps5 in 2023, can confirm this was the case for my legendary gar. It isn’t marked with an X, however my compendium shows 1/1 caught.

@@thetwan ran into another issue soon after! Was completing all the animal things (master hunter, and all legendaries). I killed an opossum ‘playing possum’ (master hunter 9) but it didn’t give me the credit for the challenge!! It took me forever to find another possum, but the second one was good 💯
But, considering the magnitude of this game, I forgive them for not fixing it lol

I caught a large mouth that was same size of the legendary one and it was a regular bass and it was caught in the place you go with Kieran with the legendary bluegill

I was fishing for legendary salmon in the snow region for like 2 hours I was bouta give up and on my last cast I see a big ass pink fish dart across the lake and attacks the lure words can’t even describe how happy I was

So, this was the first thing that came to mind as my little nephew played rdr2 on my main saved game file and brought it to my attention that he had found a legendary fish spot without an "X" over it. "Great, let's catch it right now" I replied.
"A FEW HOURS LATER..."
Taking a "John" break I decided to cheat and using youtube, after clicking on two prior videos, I came across this video... and without even having checked my game to see if this video's suggestion is accurate to my dilemma, I am preemptively posting a claim of success because all other options are now null, void, and/or exhausted without any possibility within reason of being the case for the missing fish... This has to be the reason ...because I'm at the point where I was thinking that maybe there is a snowball chance in hell that the reason why I can't seem to spot the fish is maybe because I have to use the first person camera view and then use eagle vision (or whatever it's called) to then and finally be able to spot it... But fk that, first thing I'm gonna do after I flush, wipe and wash, is check the damn compendium... and thank you for making this video and giving us, the gamers a little more credit. Because the first two videos (as this one was the third one I watched) apparently were made for toddlers ages 3 - 5 years old.

Had that problem just yesterday. I went fishing for that one , then caught it. But when I looked on the map it wasn't marked off. I look on my compendium and it says I just caught it.
For how beautiful this game is, there are many countless bugs
I would always fish for this thing just to the north of it, but when I went to where it's mouth is right on that little piece of land, I caught it no problem!

I have this issue with the Longnose Gar I play PS4 and I've caught it, I have progression in the quest but the icon shows not captured on the map glad I'm not the only one

I wish this was my problem. I can see the dumb fish in the water but it won't bite my rod, keep getting muskies on the line instead.
It took me so long, but i finally figured out how to do this on my own, i stood there for 2 hours

Ok here we are in July 2024 on PS5 and this is still an issue. I don’t remember this being a problem when I played on PS4.
Depends on the playthrough - never had the issue on Xbox, but when I moved to PC, that's when the bugs came out. Plenty of people here state on all consoles that it's an issue.

You have to stand on the spot where the white dot is on the map gill the fisherman gave you you have to keep looking in your satchel and then go back on the game map and try to stand in that spot i was having the same issue on console but i noticed that pattern after leaving this fish alone .. if you zoom in on the legendary fish map there an exact white dot marker … then i looked it up to see if anyone else struggled lol
