i’ve watched under this luminous sky several times. it deserves so much more recognition. if i had the funding, i’d make it a whole series. but one of my favorite parts is that it starts in the middle of the story, and the beginning and end are completely up to the viewer’s imagination. one can infer some things, invent others, and speculate many.

Emily Xu has been one of my favorite artists for a few years now, and the way that she uses visual symbolism and can show who a character is through their expressions, actions and design is phenomenal. Also the way that Fueled fucking DESTROYED me, I can’t watch it without uncontrollably sobbing 😭

Go!! Tell the story you wanna tell. Don't worry if its gonna be better than all the other ones. What matters is that it has a heart and it tells a story you believe can help the world somehow.
Whether it can make people smile, or alert people about an issue, or heal people from pain or help them realize that they aren't alone in their struggles. Every story has a purpose!! And you can start yours. We're with you.

      3rd year animation student here!!
its alright to be scared - it would be ignorant to ignore that it IS a mess right now.
but animation is a medium, not a genre, and every medium has their place in the industry, especially animation.
I went to a talk by Alex Hirsch's a few weeks ago and another student asked him about the industry right now - and even he admitted, that its shit, and getting in will be hard,
      but it wont always be.
There are highs and lows to everything in life, and after the high animation experienced during lock down where it was the only remaining corner of the film industry still functioning, we've hit a low
but we will bounce back! !! I mean - look at how well The Wild Robot and Inside out 2 have done at the box office? or how successful Arcane, Bluey, and other shows on streaming services are?
So long as we keep on animating, there will always be animation

Really glad to see Walter getting some love! It's been one of my favorites since it's release & I end up sharing it with a lot of students to show how powerful something short and effective can be. A lot of artists get compared to a "ghibli style" but I think he's very obviously influenced my Miyazaki & Takahata in a specific and understated and distinctly not soft-color-cozy ghibli way that I personallyyy think gets overlooked. It's not flashy but it's one of the most professional level student shorts out there. I think this is also one of the older shorts on this list so it's pretty cool to see Lorenzo's influence on the animation industry since then- especially in Pixar's Luca.

    • @ButterPrime

For sure! Professional is such a good way to put it, because it’s made in a way that really shows off exactly what the people making it would add to a larger studio. It’s really impressive stuff.

I'm going to a college with an animation program that got absolutely demolished by covid, it got so bad that they don't even offer a degree in animation. They combined it with the video arts section of the college, making us take classes that we really shouldn't be taking. Alongside this, the school is far more geared towards illustration and painting rather than animation. Yet again, this school doesn't require a portfolio to get into, and I had no real portfolio before this. I get a lot of thesis films in my feeds which absolutely pale in comparison to what I have been able to do, and it has pretty much convinced me to go to another school after this. That being said, one of the first times I had ever really delved into making my own short was a year ago, and it got a lot of praise from my friends and classmates. Though on a broader scale it is nothing much, the fact that it was even possible to create was astounding. I gained a new appreciation for the craft, even if I had to rush the ending section all in one night. That feeling of creating a fluid movement got me hooked in a way I can't describe. I can't imagine how much I could grow by going to a school made specifically for this, and honestly it would be a dream come true to create a thesis film over the span of a year rather than a few weeks. Absolutely phenomenal video too, being able to delve into other artists work and watch their dedication and their specializations shine is unmatched. Trying to figure out what they spent the most time on, what they were the proudest of, what they spent hours working on and could barely get past, all of these change from person to person. What I find the most astounding is how different the animation styles and art direction is between student films, all of them have rich personalities since they understand that they have to make the film stand out from the rest. You said it very well, "Allows people to say what they want, in any way that they want to say it." For me, that's having think brushstrokes, blending emotion into abstraction alongside being grounded, and learning to take my sketchy style into animation. I'm definitely going to be watching a lot more of your videos while I do my work!

Last Summer is another amazing animated thesis film that I come back to all the time. Under This Luminous Sky is one that makes me so incredibly happy because it's like you can feel the love for the art running under the entire thing. It takes a lot of skill to pack so much world building and flavor into such a short story and so incredibly impressive of the students who worked on the writing.

Damn shoulda mentioned welcome to hell. It’s pretty old but I did happen to find out about it through a friend a while back and it’s a unique take on dark humor. It’s witty, refreshing, and leaves you think about what death really does to someone. If you still keep kicking in some form then does the life you lived still matter? What does it mean to become friendly with those who have ulterior motives but fail to execute them? How does involuntary action change the way we see people? I think there’s a sequel in the works that looks to expand on all this but as a thesis film it’s so unique in look and story and I absolutely love it!

Watched this with the "weird viewing experience" and I gotta say, it's great! I love watching movie reviews/essays, but I never tend to watch the actual film. The way you structured this was amazing! It might just be me, but the slower editing style with heartfelt commentary helped so there wasn't any whiplash between the short film and your analysis. I also love your selection. I was aware of a couple of the short films, but most of them were new for me! Keep up the great work

I also watched this with the weird viewing experience and I have to agree with you. I thought it would be too much whiplash going from the short film to the video and back and forth but because the short films are well... short, it makes me feel like i never spent too long away from the video. For the second half i also tried watching all the rest of the short films in a row and then watching the rest of the video all in one and i have to say, i actually preferred going back and forth between short film and video! It meant that my brain didn't need to retain all the thoughts and feelings that i had about each short film when watching the video and instead could simply watch the video after freshly having those thoughts.
TLDR: I agree and I also prefer it to watching all the short films together and then the video afterwards.

I remember that (for some reason) I watched Fueled as a kid and was like, “man, this is sad… I really don’t know what’s happening.” Now I’m watching it again and holy cow, this is just depressing.

I’ve got a project for image creation class due that takes the form of an Animation thesis between 15s and 1m. The teacher didn’t require you to draw moving pictures (aka the basics of animation), but I went overboard.
