We lived in SW FL at that time, it was a regional hit before it went national. I loved it then, and now.

I was 13 when this came out and this was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar. This song is still a favorite of mine. Thanks for uploading it.

This song got lots of airplay on the South Florida rock AM stations in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami(WFUN & WQAM) in the mid to late 60s. I was in high school at the time and it was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar, later on bass.

It was fairly popular in Detroit as well. Both CKLW and WKNR had it on their playlists.

Still one of the all-time greatest garage singles--right up there with "You're Gonna Miss Me" by the 13th Floor Elevators and "Death Bells at Dawn" by the Lords.

Trivia. This song sold over a million copies, but never entered the Top 40. It was a regional hit in different parts of the U.S. over a period of about 2 years.

I always thought that Tommy James (Shondells) ripped the riff/chord structure off for his 1968 "Crimson and Clover" hit.

I have this single. It too is on Kapp but mentions Universal City records on the bottom & I think the number is 110. I think it's a reissue from a couple years later.

The Kapp label with the Universal City mention on the perimeter is a reissue from 1967-68. The #709 issue is the first pressing Kapp issue from 1965-66. Original local pressings of "Little Black Egg" from 1965 were on the Lee Record label and are pretty rare.

Obvious Buddy Holly influence. Great tune!

The little black egg with the little white specks is our universe full of stars.
The tree is the tree of life.
Mary (the Madonna Mary) and Lee (short for Levi) represent Catholicism and Judaism.
"I won't let them stretch their necks..." refers to hiding the secrets of the universe from the religious.
"Oh goldurn what can I do? The little black egg's gonna tell on you." Goldurn is a euphemism for 'god damn'. This refers to your sins being revealed by the universe (the little black egg) after death.
