- The freeCAD sketcher has a number of different types of constraints and one they can confuse beginners is the Reference Constraint. Why does FreeCAD have this and what can it be used for. This video will answer that question.

Thank you so much. I keep coming back to constraints getting stuck on "why isn't this green? What did I miss?" Bravo.
Been at Freecad for 11 years. Sadly I was stuck with most of what I learned back then. Thank you very much
Oooh trying to make progress then was a nightmare, you was totally on your own. I felt the same when I started but that wasn't that far back so there was some bit not much help. Glad your enjoying the videos.
@@MangoJellySolutions it was dark times 😂
Being able to directly add a distance constraint between a line and a circle without all that faffing about with a construction dot is great - nice v0.21 find!
It's been so useful and I want to show case the new features in 0.21 in my videos. Glad you enjoyed and thank you for the comment
Agree. I have 0.21 installed and had no idea. What a time and pain saver
I feel like a genius after following this tutorial
Perfectly explained! Thank you
I was sketching in 0.21 a couple of days ago. The sketch was basically made of arcs. It seemed to only allow a max number of them. From there they appeared to start as circles, but just disappear when trying to attach them. I also had the same issue in 0.21 in a different sketch that was comprised of more features than just arcs. I reverted back to 0.20, and didn't have the problem. I would post this somewhere else, but don't know the proper forum. Thanks a million for doing an awesome job explaining everything so well!
Good find. I am so new to this that I sometimes don't know the difference between a bug and a feature 😄
Before you know it, you'll have mastered all the featured bugs. I don't have any background either, and have been at it a little over a year now. I'm super grateful for all the work everyone has put into it. I think if I keep at it at this rate I'll be proficient with most of it in another year though. This channel is great, and I also watch AllVisuals4you which is another excellent choice for how I learn, but there are a ton others for any learning style.@@flyingfarm1
Thanks for highlighting that. I have thrown this up on twitter to see if anyone has experienced the same. Bugs can be submitted through forum.freecad.org/viewtopic.php?t=5236#:~:text=If%20you%20think%20you%20found,%2FFreeCAD%2FFreeCAD%2Fissues.
Oh...you are Freecad God...This is going to be so handy....Thankyou a bunch.
Ah thanks 😊😊 Glad you will find it useful.
Now that's a tutorial!
Glad to hear you found the tutorial helpful! It’s always nice when things are explained clearly. Happy learning!
I liked this program much more when I didn't have to think. :)
Thank you for taking the time, great vlog👋👋👋
Glad your enjoying
Very nice😊 Great learning.
Very good information!
very helpful tutorial
Tanks sir tutorial...
Brilliant 😊
Very nice, when you explained the formula you should mention the syntax.
In other words state whether a space must be added between the operators.
Another issue: tried to use "Left Side", did not work, changed it to one word "LeftSide" and all was well.
@@flyingfarm1 Sometimes programmers forget that the average lay person is not aware of the importance of syntax and they have to be reminded. One time I explained how to use a command line batch file I had written and it took me multiple emails to figure out why some people could not use it and it was a white space issue.
@@flyingfarm1 you can not have a space in a name you can use left_side or LeftSide or left-side or left*side just can not have a space.
Clear explanation, thank you :)
Thank you for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed.
Thank you. Great learning for me 🙂
Thank you sir .
Most welcome
Great channel...is it possible to snap a cube to the grid?
No but when you can right click transform and alter rotation and distance increments from the options on the left so you can move in incremental steps. Glad your enjoying the videos.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your donation
How to pentagon?
Nice Tutorial Darren, I can see how this would be valuable in complex designs with (Pardon the Pun_ Specific Design Constraints). Looks like I've completed this series, I'll no doubt be doing some revision as I incorporate it into my RC Aircraft design projects. In addittion to 3D Modelling I'd like to be able to document designs via Mechanical/ tech drawings. Any suggestions I'll give Tech Draw a Go. I have a Mate who PLA & Resin Prints (TinkerCAD) more suggestions? Thanks RW
So "reference constraint" is equivalent to "driven constraint" in Fusion 360?
That's pretty much how I've always looked at it. (Though I have exactly zero F360 experience beyond reading about it, or watching somebody due a tutorial using it, the concept is pretty self-evident, at least to me)
@@felsinferguson1125 once I see it in action, i think. Without an explanation, I thought it was an option to make the given constraint a reference for other constraints. Probably obvious to everyone but me, lol, but I do appreciate the help I get from these videos.
@@tonyrichmond9428 Oh yeah - There's no question Mang0 is a pretty darn good teacher.
It's only obvious when you know what it is and how to use it 😊 I always consider making a video over a small feature like this as anyone searching for what it is has an explanation and examples of how to use it. I have found many things are taken for granted when I have followed tutorials. One of my pet hates when you get half way through a tutorial and it says now add a 'add technical name I never heard of here' but it doesn't tell you what menu item to select or button to press. Then your left stranded. Glad your enjoying the videos and finding them useful.
Ahh thank you 😊😊😊😊😊👍👍
I get this is a free software but Jesus Christ this is the most annoying software I've ever used in my life
