Top work Dave, loved the update. Don't apologise to anyone about not looking like you haven't done much. Only people who actually do this type of stuff know what it takes. Everything you have achieved so far is awesome. Keep on digging mate we will all keep watching.
Life is always what stop my progression. I have all my videos on rumble. It is under Dale digs downunder. I just finished a dirt elevator for my dig might give you some ideas for yours. Looking good thought buddy and excited about the extension.
I can’t tell you what you should choose…but to help decide I can think about a couple things: 1) young kids would absolutely be delighted with many tunnels however impractical adults might find it…I remember someone’s house having two staircases was incredible fun. 2) Thinking about your reasons why will guide all your decisions. As for us, we thoroughly enjoy the adventure anyway. Simon Sinek has a good inspirational video on “Reason why”. Loving this content.
Thanks for the update! I love sports dumper, a 200Di is the ideal engine (shame it didn't have a flapper on the exhaust or it would likely fire up) if you grab some ATF and some acetone (mixed 50-50) and pour it down the bores and leave it a few days she might bust free and spin over, the clutch might be more of a problem though as they love to pop a fork when they seize.
Change the oil in that engine first thing. The new bunker sounds like a solid plan. The lift system can be built with a tripper at the top to automatically dump the skip, as it's called, into what ever soil hauler you end up with. A trap door that closes as soon as the skip passes up will keep any spoils from going back down the shaft. The top of the trap door should have a plate that is set at an angle to further deflect any loose spoils. Perhaps all of this set up above ground could be made into a club house on stilts for the kids with the unloader underneath the floor disguised as something else. Just a few random thoughts from someone who used to work with an underground skip.
Good morning, Dave, [Oz time], I am loving the series, still having issues with my neck. But I am keen to see more, Love the dumpy, and it obviously needs love. Keep up the good work. Cheers
Epic epic and epic love the bar idea 8 will happily get a round in. More tunnels yay can you imagine going from your summerhouse down under the floor getting to your bunker down the tunnel for a refreshing pint
I’m certainly having to learn some new slang. More context clues for us non-Brit’s please? Love your accent, just afraid of what I might be missing, because I always learn something from your videos.
You've inspired me to put a cellar under my own home. Been digging for a couple of weeks now. Unfortunately, it is almost solid limestone and clay, which is slow digging by hand and jackhammer.
Thanks for the update! Sounds like the project just scaled up a bit. As good a reason to build a new addition onto the house as any I suppose. 😂 Keep up the good work, man. Can't wait to see the contraption you've built for the next video. 🫡
I love the in built drunkenness limiter of that plan - not making it through the tunnel too plastered, and you can't have too much tunnelling! It is also hugely amusing to me that you didn't consider that this would mean punching holes in your underfloor heating earlier.
Basements are designed and constructed in different grades, from basically wet carparks to archive quality library. The difference will be via concrete grades, water bars, drained and ventilated cavity sumps, and external weatherproof membranes and insulation. You can guess which direction the cost gradient goes.... Therefore basements are the costliest form of adding space, and people only do it when going up is not an option, or land cost per M² is astronomical - think city centres. Structural engineer advice from one experienced in high grade basement design is essential...
I'd suggest something like Basecrete for waterproofing the concrete and/or concrete blocks. Resists both positive and negative hydrostatic pressure (so you could even apply it both sides to be doubly sure). As long as you very carefully follow instructions its easy to apply (roller application). Alternatives like Masterseal 581 could be considered (although I think Basecrete is lifetime duration)
4:56 from my own experience of working in bunkers when I was in the RAF (radar R3 bunkers and other types) I often used to have a look at how they constructed bunkers, particularly when they extended the bunkers to add 3 big marine diesel engines for standby power, this was at RAF Buchan in Scotland. Well they used reinforced concrete on the outside but they used to and still do I believe paint the outer skin with bitchumen. In your case, you could line the whole bunker with a butile rubber sheet and overlap the adjoined edges and tar / bitchimen to seal the joints and maybe paint the whole outer skin in bitchumin.
You could take inspiration from the dumb waiters of the Victorian Country Houses, to get the beer barrels /stock down to the Bar. love the idea s and practicality of your projects also I am big World War II buff and would be amazing if you recreated that time in the final build.
Some very interesting ideas. Stone henge hatch? Yeah that would be interesting, If you do add an extension to the house how about 2 underground bunkers? One play room one lounge/movie room. Heck, why not am a unicorn farm?
waterproof concrete - xypex c-500 nf. you add it to the concrete when you pour it... boom, it's waterproof. also on the outside (or positive side waterproofine), laurenco membrane.
Maybe dreamt it, but isnt there waterproof concrete for things like this? If so, make walls and floor on the new bunker of that and put in a door like they have in submarines between tunnel and the new bunker. And dont forget a second (full height?) door for the Stonehenge tunnel, maybe hidden behind a Dr Evil control panel 😮 That way the doors can kinda carry on the military theme.
I've done some cutting into wet land for my above ground tunnel (er wot?). Needed a tunnel, but it's too wet here to tunnel. From my research, it seemed that the best plan is to not bother trying to stop the water flow, but give it a low pressure area for it to drain to. Basically exactly what you did in your existing bunker. On my cutting in, I double skinned the retaining walls, with a drain between.
This is just a thought Dave to make creating the bunker easier and stronger. You could dig a very deep trench around the bunker area and fill it full of concrete. When I say deep 2.5m. Then that’s also your footings for your extension in one. Then just dig the middle out inside the concrete walls. You can insulate and put a plastic membrane to the outside of the trench before you fill it up. Like I say just an idea and it would be bomb proof. Take pictures as you go and it will cover you for building control issues. You could also tank it out inside when you concrete a floor so it’s double protected.
@@Trainrhys I would do the same the tunnelling is the exciting bit. I was just suggesting because building control will want a good set of footings for his extension so it covers both projects. He will probably have to put re-bar in it as well like Colin’s car basement
you can easily just punch through your underfloor heating, you just need to patch it through; electric or water (easier). It'll be in an easy to do maintenance area anyway.
Have you considered a lift or ladder to get into the new bunker rather than a staircase? Staircases take up more room and might make the new bunker feel more like a basement than a bunker - just a thought?
I’m putting a toilet down there so they don’t take up too much space as that’s underneath them, I am making another way in which is more in theme of the project as well 😂
If you’re digging up the house bunker, could you just dig the rest of the tunnel out from that direction? Even dig all the way down and then refill over the tunnel?
Yes I could do but want to do the full tunnel length by hand now I’ve started. Once the lift is fitted I think I can increase the digging process massively
The shipping container is too narrow, that’s the problem and you can’t build on to of them either. It is a good entry hall for the other bunker though 😀
will you film the attempt to get the dumper going? looks like water could get in the gear stick boot hole also. tip some ATF/Acetone mix in each of the cyls in the hope it's just rings stuck or is it likely not even worth the bother trying in case it's a big waste of time
1. You're bonkers. And awesome. 2. Where is Jim pumping air into? I don't get how/why he's off to one side. 3. I can't see the point in the tunnel leading of t to Stonehenge. What's over there? Anything? 4. Did I tell you you're bonkers and awesome? 😍
Thanks for the nice comment 😀, Jim isn’t piped up yet so is just for the theme currently, I will be installing pipe work when I line the tunnel, since I put the escape hatch in the airflow has been working ok anyway for now. I need to make some pipe ducting out of something like beer cans 😂. The side tunnel to the other building would be just for the sake of it so it probably won’t be worth doing and I won’t do it till I have finished all the rest anyway, just might need to leave a opening in the brickwork so I can do it if needed.
Please don't stint on the detail when you get the sports dumper up and running! Kind of reminds me of Maximus Ironthumper's Zil (I wish he'd finish that!)
If you connect the actual bunker to your house wouldn't you have some humidity traveling from one room to another? A hermetic door to seal off the tunnel from the new room would be smart.
you can never get carried away with tunneling, LOL. Tunnel everywhere! Like a mole... If you improve your technique, it'll only get easier and easier to make pointless tunnels :D
The more I watch RUclips tunnel videos, the more my wife wants me to build a bunker on our off-grid cabin lot.
If she wasn‘t your wife already, I‘d strongly advice you to marry that woman! Sounds like a keeper to me.
I agree with your wife I think u should put it on youtube 2
I’m seriously thinking about it too🙂
"I'm gonna build...a big bunker under the house." Music to my ears. 👍👍👍👍👍

An EPIC plan all the way around! MOOOOORE TUNNELS !! MOOOORE BUNKERS !! Thanks Dave!!
And moooore overpowered engines for the application

Nobody has done a two story bunker build yet, dig it deeeep and put in an extra level!!!!!
Ground water is a bit high here for going any lower

I'm definitely interested in the dumper rebuild. I like your engineering and designs, I'd like to see that stuff too and not just the end product.

I don’t like to worry about little details in the future else I probably wouldn’t of started the tunnel 😂

Yes it becomes an addiction 😂
Never enough tunnels and bunkers Dave !!!
That’s what I’m thinking 😂
this is going to be EPIC .
I hope so 😀
Great final shot with the drone Tunnel Dave, love it mate. Looking forward to seeing what you’ve rigged up for the

I wish I had been able to do this kind of thing 40 years ago. Advice from an old guy, do it while you can, because tomorrow it will be too late.
New plan sounds great! In that way there will be more usable space under ground! 👍

That’s epic 🏆
Too many tunnels ones fine. Keeps you more safe
Superb as ever, a very entertaining series and just getting better.
All great ideas, Looking forward to them coming to fruition. Thanks for the update.
I’m excited to start on the lifting system in the morning 😀

More tunnel, more maintenance. I think leave branching off to a random other part of the garden is a waste of time for the moment.

Tunnel vision makes for a dirty business.
How about the small side tunnel into new bunker being a slide?

What you want your entry to look like, a closet (corner), a castle stairway (open, right in middle) or a hidden latch (under a swiveling table)?
My plan is a book shelf on the corridor and part of it lifts up into the roof to reveal the staircase
