Pleasant guy. Very well thought out and practical advice. Kudos!
Beyond proper warm up, I've learned that drummers should focus on posture while (seated) around the kit, as well as determining the most efficient kit setup to maximize performance. Other factors include each individual's physical status, including range of motion, flexibility, body measurements or special needs . For starters, I have a "bad back" and my throne has a heavy duty back support.

Play as often as possible. Gig as much as you can. The more often you're playing the looser you'll be. Try to get in at least an hour a day. 24 minutes on page 5 of stick control will really warm. Up your wrists

Super awesome tip, to literally warm up hands in warm water to get ready for stretching and into drumming, thanks so much for sharing :)

These stretches are super - will share with a client who has just taken up drumming; I would also a couple more for the lower body: hip rolls (hula hooping) both clockwise and anticlockwise and some glut stretches

While I'd add more, I do 100% agree all of these stretches definitely help a lot. Even if you're young and a beginner, drink plenty of water and stretch. I remember being dumb, not stretching or drinking anything other than alcohol and/or soda, and waking with a Charlie horse.

Drumeoga. I love this! Thanks for this practical stuff. I'm trying to up my double bass speed, and my calves keep frolicking all on their own.
edit: would you mind showing us some stretches for the mind? I think that might actually be my problem.

Put your hands in warm water to get the blood flowing and "warm up" your hands? Isn't that what happens anyway when someone warms up with sticks on a practice pad or drum, lol?

ThomasMetal75 I’m so late but just try the warm/hot water for a couple minutes. It will really loosen the tension in your hands for about 20 minutes. Good to stretch right after that. Then stretch right after you’re done playing.

I do stretching but this seems to be a much better way. ( using the sticks)

i prefer dynamic stretches prior to a session, and then static stretches after. I don't go overboard, and I don't stretch out my legs afterwards. I just quickly move my limbs to get them warmed up....that is the main point...warm up, not cool down. The kinds of stretches matter. Some of these are good, but everyone is different. Some drummers do not stretch, and some always do.

Years ago I had appt. with a nurse to get blood pressure, etc, for a new insurance policy. He asked me if I exercised & how often. I said I play the drums about twice a week, practice and 4 hour gigs and that was my only exercise at that time. We played heavy classic rock songs like Led Zep etc etc. He said drumming's not exercise but I told him it is. He got huffy with me and said, well I'll just put down you don't exercise on the form. Jerk. We joke about this years later after a gig.
