Pink Floyd- The Wall, Beatles-White album, The Who-Tommy and Quadrphenia, just to name a few. Also every year around Thanksgiving, Independence Mall Cinema would play The Wall movie. Acid was running deep back when Thanksgiving came around. Man I miss the 90's.
***** There was a legendary 50,000 watt AM station out of Little Rock that would play progressive rock late at night from the late 60s thru the early 70s -- KAAY. They had a huge nighttime signal across the central US
Yeah, commercial rock radio has degenerated to where every "classic rock" station in every city just plays the same 300 or so songs every day. It makes me sad...
Will Cate The show was "Beaker Street"! During the day our local (Waterloo, Iowa) religious station was on the air, and it blocked KAAY so I never got to hear it in the daytime.
I was in Montreal on a vacation my folks in the summer of 1979 and one evening they showed this episode on tv, which I had never seen before. I was totally captured with this segment. Just loved it. The next day I went to Eatons department store with my folks and bought the album. This was my first real intro to Pink Floyd and it honestly changed my musical life, more than any other piece of music. I'm proud to say that when I bought Animals, it was Floyd's most recent release.
For those of us who worked in radio then , this show was "Must See TV" The next morning at work could usually find us convulsed in laughter telling and re telling things that were "Just like on 'KRP last night"
The same thing happened on an episode of "Alf". There was a Floyd song playing on the original airing, but in syndication and on dvd, it was replaced with a generic rock song. Back then, they either didn't think ahead about such things as syndication, or it was too expensive. Once a show is no longer on the air, the network no longer wants to put money into these things.
Wow. Growing up in Cincinnati and watching this show occasionally, I never realized how brilliant some of these episodes were, and how well written where the characters.
I thought it was average. It wasn't even filmed there, so aside from the opening scenes, it has nothing to do with ohio. Just like aviation. It happened in NC, and here at kitty hawk only. Sorry ohio.
I got into pink floyd cuz of this episode. i remember watching it thanksgiving 94 i think. Then at a school rummage sale i bought The Wall on vinyl and the rest is history
I really hate how music that originally appeared in a movie or broadcast isn't included in DVD releases even though it was on VHS ones. This is my absolutely favorite scene ever in the WKRP In Cincinnati program.
i was all excited when i saw the dvd set in the store. and put it right back on the shelf when i saw they altered the show because of the songs in it. they may as well have totally cut out every scene with Dr Johnny Fever & Venus Flytrap.
They originally licensed the music for pennies per song. After the show became a huge rerun success, and box sets of TV shows became a thing, they attempted to renew the licenses and all the artists wanted mega-bucks per song - made it financially impossible to release the show as-is for less than about 1m per show.
Yes. Yes I do remember the old school days of AOR...kids today just don’t know. I remember hanging with friends (who had really technical hi-fi stereo set ups) listening to The King Biscuit Flour Hour, broadcast from far, far away!
Fever was on in the morning, presumably 8:00 to 10:00 since Carlson was already in the office. I bet Johnny played the whole record in the same position in his chair. I know i would. Although Animals is not 8:00-10:00 am music, unless you’ve been up all night and skipping out of work/school.
I remember watching this episode as a boy. This is where Mr. Carlson goes from being a push-over to a tyrant (to earn respect). Fast forward to present - there was a guy who worked in my office for a long time. He was very skilled, but was always stoned. They finally, after years of giving him repeat chances, had to fire him. He was a huge Pink Floyd fan (would hardly listen to anything else). I thus call this video clip "Tribute to AC."
this is from the famous "Turkey's away" i have this on DVD, but they edit the song out because of copyright royalties. that is so stupid. i had a better idea release the original versions on DVD complete with the original songs...AND compile a WKRP double CD Soundtrack album with an edited version of "Dogs" and other songs that were on the show beggining with the beggining Thme and ending with the End Theme.
It's not on the Shout Factory version..... though the scene is there minus the part where they mention it's Pink Floyd. They just have generic music with dogs barking (aka "sound alike music") - though it does include Carlson asking what "Pigs on The Wing" sounds like....
+Bill Kaliszewski Even on the box, they said they did the best they could to restore any original music...I imagine that was not easy, or they had to pay extra. Some bootleg-video and collector's sites offer the whole run of shows with the original music in them.
You're right. I did some checking. They edited almost every piece of music out of that show and replaced it. Even Jennifer's doorbell. I won't be buying the new edited releases if this is the case. I'll have to find the originals somehow. That music was part of the shows charm and now it's been removed.

The good news is that almost the whole scene is in the DVD version now unlike the original DVD release. The only part they removed was talking about Pink Floyd so it goes "Gripping Music, huh?" then Carlson replies "Is that Dogs parking?" but the overall joke is still there.
benindavisca Blame Roger. The copyrights to "Dogs" is now Pink Floyd Music Publishers Ltd/Roger Waters Music Overseas Ltd (part of the suit with his ex-bandmates). Roger shot the use down. It has nothing to do with Pink Floyd or their lawyers. The TV show used a lot of popular music on their show when it aired and refused to pay for the rights for any of it when it was released on home video.
Correct, to a point. During original airplay, the producers found a loophole to exploit and thats how they were able to play the music without paying royalties. To do that now would cost millions per episode if they got permission at all.
