    Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture in Japan is home to some of the best food in the country.     Genghis Khan: grilled mutton (sheep meat)
    Hairy Crab: also known as horsehair crab, this large crab is found along the coast of Hokkaido.
    Sea urchin onigiri: unigiri is a play on the words “uni” (sea urchin), and “onigiri” (rice ball).
    Crab croquette: crab and cream are mixed together, covered in breadcrumbs (panko), and fried to a crispy golden brown.
    Miso Ramen: ramen made with a miso-based broth.

    Sapporo was the last place I visited in Feb 2020 before travel restrictions… will always visit Jyogai seafood market to have breakfast and Sumire Ramen .. they have their own 7-11 Premium Gold Instant Ramen

    The tomalley is full of flavour. You take all the shells after and you cut it up and make a great bisque with it with a dry white whine, butter and cream. Yumm!

    I went to Hokkaido in November 2019. I actually had some snow as well. The food was awesome in Sapporo and I managed to go visit the Nikka Yoichi Distillery and learn how whisky is made.

      @@JapanbyFood It was cool. I've gone to Osaka and Kyoto a dozen times but never to Hokkaido. Switching from the Shinkansen to a local diesel train was kind of different

    Hokkaido is actually relatively young as compared to the rest of Japan as it only became part of Japan around 150+ years ago. Before that, the native tribal group of people living in Hokkaido is called the Ainu.

      Not exactly. Depends on your definition of Japanese. Matsumae-han (松前藩) was in Hokkaido from 16th century-ish. And all Japanese from Hokkaido to Okinawa inherit portions of Jomon DNA. Ainu is a fusion culture of Jomon and Okhotsk people that emerged around 13th century.

    In Australia we don’t eat much mutton is older sheep has a stronger taste. So we eat lamb chops and roast lamb. Mutton is much darker meat so that’s how you can tell them apart plus the smell is different. If you ever get a chance please try it specially lamb chops

    Oh good way to have kanimiso is mix it with hot sake and drink it from crab shell. Try it if you haven’t left Hokkaido

    You Looked So Very Beautiful Today. You Seemed Nervous Taking Your 1ST Bite Of Sheep Meat. I Have Never Tried. Love Crab & Squid. Crab Cake Was The Winner For Me (( Not Even Close )) Hands Down. Could Hear The Crunch. Love Noodles. Such A Yummy Video From Start To Finish.

      Don't miss to go to the Sapporo museum area where they have buildings preserved how Sapporo looked in the early 1900s.
      It is several football fields big and very impressive especially the newspaper building with thousands of kanji , hiragana and katakana letters in it. ;-)
      And don't miss the ice cream in Sapporo but skip the hairy crab it has a weird texture and the flesh is very tasteless on its own. Blue crab or king crab are way better.

    The hairy crab was for me the most tasteless of all crabs I tried in hokkaido. I eat natto and everything else happily again in Japan with all only one exception. The blue crab and the king crab are way more tasty.

      @@ProfX501 No it's in this case the flesh. I tried out all sorts many crabs in Sapporo s crab market . The thing crab was the best the the blue crab but the hairy crab tastes of nothing with a hard to eat meat structure because it gets flaky when cooked. Try it but may be don't get big portion in my opinion.

      @@ProfX501 The roe was tasty but my disappointment was is the flesh to be honest. I am not ignorant about food I even do like natto for breakfas, but my hairy crab experience was dffrent. May be I do have focused to much on the flesh ..
