Even as someone skating for decades, I've been consciously thinking about squatting more, particularly when I'm rolling up to an uncomfortable ledge or flatbar trick. Knowing I have a better center of gravity takes a bit of the fear away and also makes the tricks easier. 🤷🏼♂️🙌🏻
It's so true about the squatting. I could not deep squat unassisted on the floor without a skateboard. I started practicing squatting and stretching ( since my hamstrings were so tight) and it totally helped my skateboarding.
I’m glad you’ve recovered. I have to stretch daily to maintain my squat. I’ve never been very flexible. So, it’s tough to maintain, and more so since my meniscectomy. Happy shredding.
been skating since 18 and off and on in my 30's. Everything hes saying is valid on point. Kairi Netsuke is the zero rider he is talking about. I wish you the best in your healing Norman
I have bad posture in general, so this tip was huge for me. Idk why I’d never thought to keep my back and head straight and use my legs but it’s been really helping how long I can skate and helped me re learn heelflips. Thanks my g
Bro. You are a fantastic explainer and teacher. Your words make sense and you deliver them so calming and understanding. I’ve been skating for 10 + years but never put consistent effort to truly progressing to a level I wanna be at. I can do all the flat ground basics skate banks, or hips. But grinds, and Ollie-ing high enough to get ontop of ledges . I’ve built bad habits overtime and I’ve tried to understand my faults in skating and I can 100% see how I’m not bending down and using my body to its optimal conditions. I’ve listened to TONS of tutorials and skating is one thing that is experience based not tutorial based and I just really appreciate the way you laid this out. Thank you. This one clicked.
Thank you for: watching, since you could’ve watched anyone else’s video and chose mind. 2nd for the kind words and explanation. I started making the videos at the request of someone whose opinion I trust, and who said I’d be good at this. Everyone who expresses the value these videos provides them gives me fuel to keep making tutorials. Happy skating!
Skating is so much more fun and less frustrating when you have correct posture. Correct posture and timing actually takes some of the mental strain that comes with beginner skating. Thank you !
Great advice! Been skating for almost 3 years now and started to notice I was losing my pop. Whenever I skate now I try to keep this in mind. Really do see a big difference
You really are the best teacher when it comes to in depth explanations. So many bad habits i developed as a kid with no proper guidance that youve helped me work through. Learned bs nollie big and fakie frontside bigs all by concentrating on my back. My squat is another thing effecting me and your explaintions really helped me understand why my nose slides barely slide!
Great talk!! Honestly a newbie… getting to stair gaps and the deeper squat has helped me commit to the Ollie as I get close to a tucked in ball with my body right before I pop…and therefor can easier accept floating through the air balled up; as opposed when I stand to straight and high up and often send the board in front of me. This has also helped all my frontside grind tricks.
Watching from Kenya. I tried the squats while skating today and noticed a significant improvement in my bs180. I'm also learning how to heelflip and noticed how easier it becomes to flick the board when popping higher
Ive used these tips after hearing them originally in your ollie higher video. Using levarage and popping while knees are still bent. Ive really focused on that for months and now i can consistently pop better, stay more centered, and land better. Its applied to Every trick ive learned and ive progressed so much since honing in the timing of when to begin pop. Since the pop is consistently better, the board sticks to my front foot better so I have way more board control than I did 6 months ago
I was expecting not a lot of depth when you said you were concussed but I was very wrong. I'm gonna think a lot about this when I'm skating and watch more footage like you suggested. I'd definitely watch that rookie series if you made it
These tips are golden, thank you very much man, you earned a sub. The hard part for me, since I've been skating a lot as a kid (with terrible form) and getting back into it now that i'm a bit older, is that i find it very weird to try and adjust my form since the muscle memory from years of skating (with bad form as I said) is still there and it feels like when trying to use good form I can't land a single trick. That being said i really see the value in this and i just have to keep at it probably.
At the end of the video when you're saying that you're having a hard time collecting your thoughts due to the concussion, I just want to say that even with that you are one of the most articulate, well-spoken people in any skateboard related video I've ever seen. I think you said your thoughts in this video beautifully and thoroughly. In regards to squatting, I think a lot of times I feel like I'm squatting far while riding but in reality I probably am not. Maybe I should film myself skating and watch back on the footage to see. I'm still fairly beginner level but I've been trying to get slappy noseslides. I think maybe I don't squat nearly as far as I think I am right before lifting the nose because it feels hard to get the nose off the ground when I go for it. Either that, or maybe it's because I'm not used to having my front foot so far on the nose whenever I lift it, because I can kickturn very well normally, it's just when I go for the noseslide I have trouble with it.
Thanks Norman! Awesome advice and perspectives here. I've skated for 15 years on and off but only recently have taken steps to fix bad habits and muscle imbalances That cause me to hunch my back forward and my knees to cave in when I squat. Doing yoga has helped my range of mobility and next on my plan is to learn weight training/squatting heavy to help give me more power/ Strength and consolidate my squat form with strait back. Can't wait to try this tomorrow on my skate session. Really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos!
Hell yeah bro. Just got back into skating at 34. Been trying to incorporate core training, and squats, stretches, to increase my range of mobility, and like you said, gives you more strength.
@@GasGotti exactly bro! how have you been getting on with the training/skating? i have found that with tricks like nollie flips or variel Heels that fixing a range of motion issue got me the trick, and it was not so much an issue with how i was approaching the trick but more with mechanical limitations, it is definitely a new way of approaching skating and probably one that we could only figure out in our 30s. i have also found that heavy squat + leg day gym sessions have helped with my general board stability and pushing more than i was expecting so that was a good bonus.
So true. When I was just starting out I couldn’t understand why I was so unstable and couldn’t get any height. It wasn’t until I watched footage of myself that I realized how little I was actually crouching down. It felt to me like I had a good amount of bend but nooo that definitely wasn’t true 😂.
Very helpful. "Leverage" is a great key word here. Tom Rohrer has an above average series of trick tips on RUclips (Tom's Tutorials) and emphasizes the importance of squatting down in every vid I've seen. Whythetrick, from Japan, even does 3d modeling of the physics, the leverage from crouching down and how to time popping and scooping. But even though I've seen all that this is still adding more to my understanding. Cool series!
Especially great tip that I hadn't heard elsewhere (even after watching vids about the best/safest ways to fall): crouching makes falling less dangerous! I'm just coming back into skating after a long hiatus and it's funny how you remember how to do tricks better than you remember how to fall. Relearning how to skate is a lot different from original natural progression.
Great video! At times I was a little distracted because your choice of background music is so good :D Maybe try pitching that down a little so that your voice doens't get into conflict with the music ;) I will try the crouching while doing noseslide slappys. For now I'm just kind of turning out of them the moment I hit the ledge.
I really needed to see this! I realized a few days ago when working on manny’s that squatting lower actually helped me not only lock into them easier but I had way more control and by my knees being bent from the squat, it gave me more spring leverage to flip out, or do a trick out of a Manny easier.
Just wanted to give an updated comment, in the last two weeks since I commented on this video first, my pop has improved dramatically, as well as my comfort and board control, ollied a gap today half my board length, and hit 2 skateparks carving bowls🤙🏼
I'm trying to skate again after 20 years of not doing it. I'm much older, and the first thing I noticed was just how bad my flexibility was hindering me. The squat part was killing me badly, and the aftermath of a session of Ollie's had me sore for nearly a hole damn month. Part of me has this sense of regret. Like damn...what did I get myself into. Can I even do this? I wasn't ever good back then, but I honestly had my best years of life....and just everything back in the day...mid to late 90s, early 2000s...whew man...life was awesome and here I am chasing a high idk is even achievable when I'm almost 40 now... On the bright side...living by LA...skateparks in abundance...I definitely had no access to that as a kid. I live next to 2 skateparks. Huge benefit of today's world. Pretty fortunate times. cross training is so important. i'm not even that old (25) but almost my whole life i've never really been physically fit or active after the age of about 10. so my lack of flexibility has really held me back in skating until i started cross training and doing a rigorous stretching routine and core workouts.
@stpedro-ht9ng I'm still struggling man. Haven't skated in 2 weeks. It's like an off an on thing. I can't do that mang tricks, but can Ollie, shuvs, half cab and at least 5050 a ledge at a nearby park. It's my job that ruins my legs tho bro. Standing, bending, stooping, steel toes 10 hours a day. I've since done stretches, foam roller, helped a ton. Leg work outs..it's like I gotta choose do I wanna be too sore to skate at all or skate and be too sore to work them out man! Haha. Thanks for the reply. I've always been fit but neglected my lower body. Skipped legs days and here it is haunting the heck outa me

You're right, if my board flys off from a whack landing, or slips out. it's a result from the actions of my body not being controlled properly. and i guess what really scares me when it comes to commiting to tricks, isnt the board. it's me. i'm scared that i won't be able to control my body correctly, to come out unscathed. it's about me not having the confidence to land this trick properly. skating really is a mental game. you can learn how to do tricks phyiscally. but to consistent perform these tricks at a consistent level. your mindset when doing these tricks consistently confident.
Thanks for the skate philosophy ! I've been trying to crouch more and pull my knees up. What do you think about crossing your wrists before you push your hands up and out ?

Got back into it, and getting better than I was all those years ago. (After a few months of getting back into skating again of course) I’d love any advice or tips you could give.
I was going to buy smaller size boards, to help with flipping/rotating my board. Literally just implemented deeper squatting stance, after watching this video. Board flips just fine now 😅
small boards do help for flipping the board a lot but i wouldn't go for one if i was taller than 5'7, weigh more than 170 lbs or have a shoe size larger than 9.5 (US). unless you really want to do circus tricks like triple flips lol.
This is inspiring man i teach kids and try to tell them the same thing. I need to squat more only because i'm always having issues with rocketed ollies my back foot comes off
Yes please do that series! I’m returning back into skating after 25 years, I will take all of the tips and tricks. I can get to get me back in the swing of things, the muscle memory is coming back to me very fast. Thank you for your tutorials.🙏🏻👊🏼😎💯
Yes this is one of the best channels, at 45 feel with in reach of been somewhere close to how i could skate at 20, minus stairs and drops. Great work MR Woods!
@@jonhollinsworth8785 it’s amazing that we thought skating was over at 30, in the 90s. Now, with the sharing of information, and better knowledge of our bodies, we can keep it rolling 👊🏾
Same, same! 46 and just getting really into skating again for the first time since I was about 30. Almost immediately could do tricks I could never do before, still have my ollies and pop shove-its, really gratifying. Dangerous for me has been that remembering how to do tricks is a lot clearer than remembering how to fall. I got over excited, over committed, and I sprained my thumb. Not a bad injury, thankful for a warning shot, but still super annoying. Relearning to stay low, when not to commit to a trick, and generally how to stay safe(-ish) is coming slower than the tricks
Hi Norman I will like to said thank you... I saw you video about squat lower to improve the ollie...well let me told you I started to do what you said ..and I NEVER EVER JUMPED OVER 3 DECK.. AND WELL I FALLOW YOU TIPS I WAS ALLOW TO JUMP OVER 3 DECK..I HOPE ONE DAY MEET YOU PERSONALLY AND SAID TO U THANK YOU......GUYS IS REAL LISTENED THE MEN IM LIVING IN NEW YORK IF ONE DAY YOU'RE HERE HIT ME I WILL LIKE TO INVITE TO LUNCH.
I almost always land tricks when I focus on bending my knees and getting that low squat energy. Helps me keep my balance too cuz I’m so tall. My stiff ass never wanna do it without having to think tho
When I squat lower, should I keep the 'release point' of my jump the same? Or should I also release my jump from a lower position? Subbed and waiting for the rest of the series.
I have a problem.. My nuts keep tightening up on my back wheels .. idk y that is it sux cause I keep having to stop and loosen my nuts on wheels or smack it on the ground.. I even put spacers in and still does it
@@NormanWoods I changed trucks thinking that that was the problem but it happens on both .. and the other trucks are fairly new.. so I put the wheels on the front trucks and same thing happened.. got the new Andy anderson nano cubes 52mm .. didn’t know if the bearings kept slipping out or what .. but I’d there a way to test the axle to see if that is the case ? I’m not saying I don’t believe you cause I do I just really hate to have to throw away two new sets of trucks

small boards do help for flipping the board a lot but i wouldn't go for one if i was taller than 5'7, weigh more than 170 lbs or have a shoe size larger than 9.5 (US). unless you really want to do circus tricks like triple flips lol.
Yes a rookie mistakes series would be great man
fye series bro u should let viewers send in clips so you can watch n show us what we do wrong
That’s a good one!
Great idea for a series. I think it would help to have more clips to illustrate the points you make.
Mad kf back tail 🔥
Great tip and very interesting wall art behind you. Can you tell us about the one to the left of your head (our right)?
This is inspiring man i teach kids and try to tell them the same thing. I need to squat more only because i'm always having issues with rocketed ollies my back foot comes off
Yes please do that series! I’m returning back into skating after 25 years, I will take all of the tips and tricks. I can get to get me back in the swing of things, the muscle memory is coming back to me very fast. Thank you for your tutorials.🙏🏻👊🏼😎💯
You got it! Planning to do over extending next.
Yes this is one of the best channels, at 45 feel with in reach of been somewhere close to how i could skate at 20, minus stairs and drops. Great work MR Woods!
@@jonhollinsworth8785 yes sir I’m having just as much fun doing it as I did when I was a kid and a teenager 👊🏼😎💯
Your pop is absolutely insane dude… dang.
Great tutorial Cheers !!!
Not sure who you are but you're correct
Amazing stuff
I hope you recover quick
Yes super stuff from you i love it.
Rookie mistakes all for it bro
Thank you so much!!!
i have been fighting for my tre flips off and on (skating off and on) i have a beautiful rotation etc but this might be my saving grace
thank you for this - soooo much!
This is life, everytime you skate you roll the dice
As a rookie, can do with all the tips I can get :D
Editing the second one tomorrow.

thank you!
This guy totally qualified to talk about how to ollie high holyshit
I almost always land tricks when I focus on bending my knees and getting that low squat energy. Helps me keep my balance too cuz I’m so tall. My stiff ass never wanna do it without having to think tho
Get well soon Norman
cool music in the background too dauym
Dude absolutely fucking fantastic videos so helpful
Glad to be useful 🙏🏾
you're the man!
antwon dixon and shane o’neil as well ☝️
When I squat lower, should I keep the 'release point' of my jump the same? Or should I also release my jump from a lower position? Subbed and waiting for the rest of the series.
I was wondering recently if I squat low at all. I will definitely pay more mind to it from now on.
that was excellent
That arm thing that prod does how can I get comfortable with it because from my experience it can be very beneficial
True
Norman Bates!
I have a problem.. My nuts keep tightening up on my back wheels .. idk y that is it sux cause I keep having to stop and loosen my nuts on wheels or smack it on the ground.. I even put spacers in and still does it
Your axle has slipped. I didn’t know that still happened. Most truck companies guarantee against that. That back truck is done. I’m sorry.
Send me a video, on instagram @norman_woods. I’ll try to help.
that picture in the background whit the monk 🤣 where did u get that ? Btw, thanks for the tip my skateboarding improved a lot
Best thing we got in London 😂
So rolling around do you you say to always have knees bent?
