Shadow Chrome Update - How is it holding up?

- 10 months ago I did a video where I re-did the Shadow Chrome (black chrome spray paint) on my car's badges. The previous job failed and chipped and I looked for ways of improving longevity and finish. Find out in this video if those methods helped. I also take some time to respond to your comments.

I used Rust-Olem’s Black Chrome on my front Grille, chrome Bezel & the two Chrome pieces on each side. Omg it turned out great. I used 400 grit sandpaper on the chrome than washed & used alcohol to get all the dirt off. Then I used Plastic promoter primer (3 light coats) 3 coats of Rust-Oleum Black Chrome & 5 coats of Clear coat. I also made my front badge White (inside part) as you can see in the pic and I really loved the way it turned out. It’s all holding up excellent so far! Time will tell. Btw I used the two part clear coat for front grille, badge & chrome pieces. That stuff is the best in my opinion for do it yourself. (Wear a good mask very strong stuff). I get nothing but compliments on my CTS. The Decepticon badge on the front license plate lights up at night! It’s give my CTS that mean look I wanted. I also used VHT Night Shade (aerosol can) to tint the Top part only of my front Headlights! I did 4 coats. I also did my back brake lights and it turned out awesome. See my profile pic for the front headlights that I tinted and all the painting I did to the grille if you can in large the pic. Btw Thx for all the videos. Look forward to you using the Rust-Olem Black Chrome & see if you like it. BTW I got my Rust-Olem Black Chrome cans at Walmart.com for $7 a can! Cheapest price I found.

Interesting product . Good tips . What would be the largest surface would you be confident applying to . And are the contents from diffrent cans consistant enough . Cheers. Jamie

I can’t say I would put it on anything larger than my application. Even after I tried 2k clear (see second episode) it can fade and even still chip (unless really well prepped I guess).

I tried shadow chrome many times with different cans. They always give a strong blue tint to them. Their clear coat makes it even more apparent. Not sure if there is a fix?
No fix. It’s just how it is but using less coats is best. Only 2-3 very light
Looks decent for can spray. From what im seeing you did not lay a proper tac coat. and now you have texture. It appears you went with a heavy spray coat from the first pass. Let pull back a little further let it tac up for a few min before laying in your regular pass coats. My 2 cents

Hey Daniel, I can't find a single video online on how to change the headlight assembly on a 3rd gen. I was moving cars around and cracked the headlight with the truck bumper. I replaced a headlight on my 1st gen v and it just involved removing the front bumper cover. I'm guessing it's the same with this but would love a video detailing it...... (:
Yup. Bumper has to come off. That’s all though
Jet Fuel Only do you know how to drain the transmission Fluid on a 3rd generation CTS 3.6 non turbo? I cannot find any info at all?? At a lost? I want to change it. Thx.
@@shanedawson-xt3wt It's not your usual procedure with the 8 speed. There's a video about the camaro trans and I believe yours and mine are similar procedure.
I suggest going to the dealer. You know I like to DIY, but I bought my own fluid and dropped it off at the dealer. :)

Warming the paint up by soaking in hot water gives a smoother coat.
Thanks. I did employ that technique but did not communicate it. Leaned it from the Plastidip days 😂
Tried vht nightshade with 2k clear?
Not with 2k, but when I did my tail lights originally I saw a clear amount of fade. On things like chrome I think it has an even more green tint.

Appreciate your feedback but what’s the proper stuff? The point of these videos was to see what options where were for a cheap, anyone can do black chrome.
