The paper is to keep me from stitching the front to the back. I didn't want to us an embroidery hoop.

If I use heat bond to affix my patches do I still need to use a stitch that will keep the raw edge from fraying?

The heat and should minimize fraying. Then stitching could be decorative. You might add just the tiniest bead of Fray Check to the edges.

l was hoping for you to show us how you machine stitched the applique.....Normal l when l put patches for mending the holes in the knee, rip open one side of the led seam...then re-sew.
