There's something I've barely heard people talking about, and that's the fact that the movie makes an effort to make you understand how races work. This is no Fast and Furious bullshit, where drivers watch someone behind them and somehow drive faster. Ford v Ferrari explains you a few mechanics (For example: The brakes have a limit, or the fact that Ken's Ford can pass 7000 RPM when used properly...), and then shows you how those mechanics affect the race. From then on, you don't need no motivational speech, no "I can't lose this time!" bullshit, you just watch how the drivers struggle to find the right moment to push, or otherwise, they're gonna blow their chance.
And all this is not achieved by constant exposition nor any kind of ex-machinas. Ken "wins" at the end because he's an expert on the matter, and treats cars like a living being. He always knows what the stakes are. It's as realistic as you can make a car competition movie.
Also, absolutely stellar work from Christian Bale. Damon was great too, but the way Bale made me forget the fact that I was watching a movie... 10/10

the director of the film gave a great IndieWire interview about the film and Bale, one great quote: '' I felt the role was close to Bale and prayed he would do it. He’s a model to me of artistic perseverance and flexibility. He'll text you with thoughts and free associations about the character. It's all incredible food. He’s a wonderful father, loving husband, great friend. He’s not interested in being famous. He drives a pickup truck, he’s grounded in the world, he raced motorcycles but had to stop when he got hurt, when he had kids. There are so many parts of Ken in Christian, who’s a perfectionist. He’s trying to achieve something for himself. It's magical to direct someone like that because they draw you into their own idealism. You feel that energy; it permeates the set. ''

You had old F1 cars from the 60-80s, old GT cars from the 50s to the 80s.
We were so close as we could be on the grass, behind the stands and on the closed part of the track.
It was so amazing. The sound, the smell, the vibrations. Everything was perfect.
When the races started it was like thunders were bursting in your ears and your chest. We couldn't even talk cause of the loud melody of the engines. But we both knew what we were thinking about.
That it was one of the best time of our life.

With a diesel car (like a Renault Clio 3) it cost less than 40 bucks for the travel back and forth.
The most expensive part was the tickets to access to the events !
If you ever go there, do it during a Grand Prix. It was really exciting. Otherwise you have some cool stuff to look around and the main attraction would be the Northern Loop.

Speaking of driving in the movie, few facts:
    1. Mangold explained that Bale and Damon drove, but only a little, because Mangold himself forbade his actors to drive. He didn't want to take responsibility for any tragedy, since Christian already had few serious accidents, because he is actually natural driver - he raced on motorcycles, not cars, but on motorcycles. He has metal elements in his hand and had a fragment of his finger reattached, because of these accidents. He stopped racing because of his wife and two young children, he promised his wife& I respect him for this, he talked about it in this interview, it's on youtube - DP/30: Christian Bale on Out Of The Furnace . Mangold also talks about Bale's racing and his similarity to Miles, it's at 8:50 in this : FORD V FERRARI | James Mangold "Director" On-set Interview (also on youtube). So it's understandable.
    2. Nowadays, with big budget movies like this, no producer or director would let actors to risk his health or life that way, if something had happened, legal hell and the loss of money for producers would have been enormous, plus the driving done in this movie is much much more faster and better than in McQueen movie, this is why they had so many professional drivers involved

Exactly what I was going to write. The speed of the cars in the behind the scenes shots for this one looks extremely slow. James Garner drove the car with a camera strapped to the front and sometimes the sides of his cars and drove at speeds far higher than Ford V Ferrari.
I saw Motoring correspondent Andrew Frankel commenting about the scene where the Ford is supposed to be changing down just to pass another car while flat out on the Mulsanne Straight!
I think that sums it up. I still look forward to watching it though. Time will tell if it comes close to Le Mans or Grand Prix.

There were NO real Cobras or GT40s in the movie. They were replicas by Superformance. There were two replica Cobra Daytona Coupes. The mirror polished bare aluminum one in this preview is by Kirkham Motorsports and an exact replica of CSX2286, the original Daytona Coupe that fell off a car carrier at LeMans in 1964. It was stretched 3 inches and a 427 was stuffed in it. it never raced. The real car was never mirror polished bare aluminum. The other Daytona Coupe was a modern version designed by Pete Brock, the original designer of the Cobra Daytona Coupe. The shape is close to the original, but it it is a modern car. In the movie, this blue "Brock Coupe (CSX9000) appears in the Shelby American LAX factory. It is clear coated blue (no clear coat in 1965) and has big, modern 18" wheels. This car also appears on top of a car carrier outside the factory hangar doors. RCR (Race Car Replicas) provided replicas of the racing Ferraris (powered by Chevy V8s). There were some real Ferrari street and GT cars parked in the Ferrari factory in the movie. Early in the movie, Carroll drives away from his doctor's office in a fiberglass replica Porsche. The instant giveaway is a modern, flat black windshield wiper.

The colour grading that was done in editing make a lot of scenes look CG, but it's great to see that it was actually practical, universal studios could learn a thing or two

Boy, those camera cars are pretty quick (and uncomfortable l've no doubt). I reckon the're the best drivers as well. I wonder what power plant they use? Really looking forward to seeing the film. Well done to all. Did Ron Howard pass on this?

Good movie but they used Auto Club Speedway for Daytona and the two tracks are completely different. I noticed it within a couple of seconds. Also, in the movie it shows that Ken Miles wasn't allowed to participate in the 65 Le Mans and listened to it on the radio from the garage but he actually competed at Le Mans that year but only ran 45 laps and retired due to gearbox issues.

The movie could have been even better. Had they filmed the Daytona 24 race at Daytona. Le mans would have been harder to do with it not being a permanent track.

    • @connormclernon26
      @connormclernon26 5 лет назад +4

Except Daytona has changed since then. If you want more practical effects, then you have to sacrifice CGI to get rid of the buildings that would be anachronistic, which was the problem with Dunkirk.
