New steps! New steps! New steps! Like you, this song always takes me to the movie finale. As already mentioned, Strictly Ballroom would be good for their movie reaction channel.
Much loved performer John Inglis Young, OAM (born 21 June 1950), known professionally as John Paul Young, is a Scottish-born Australian pop singer who had his 1978 worldwide hit with "Love Is in the Air". His career was boosted by regular appearances as a performer and guest host on Countdown, a 1974-1987 TV series for Australia's national broadcaster ABC. Besides "Love Is in the Air", Young had top ten chart success in Germany and the Netherlands with "Standing in the Rain" and four other top ten hits in South Africa, including No. 1 hits with "I Hate the Music" in 1976 and "Yesterday's Hero" in 1975.On 27 August 2009, Young was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. But to Ian 'Molly' Meldrum and thousands of fans, he was known by his special nickname, Squeak. Peace out.
JPY big time in Australia at the time !! Used in "Strictly Ballroom" movie because this song was used so often for the Latin Dance 'Samba' it was also used at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics. This song is just an Aussie classic.
RIP the great singer/songwriter Roger Whittacker today. Durham Town and The Last Farewell are among this 50 million record-selling crooner's greatest hits. He sang in English, German, and Kiswahili, having been born and raised in Kenya. You'd love his iconic baritone voice and guitar playing.
This is the good side of Disco...when I was working in radio, and we had to play this stuff, my line was "what happens when a volcano erupts?" Lava's in the air! Morning radio back then was one dad joke after the other...but I HAD FUN!
Great reaction, love this song! But I've got an artist and genre you've never reacted to...Glenn Miller & his Orchestra...swing music...Chattanooga Choo Choo and In The Mood. You will not be disappointed, i promise!!
Certified Legend! My favourite JPY anecdote is when his management arranged a big meeting with USA execs and he was a no show. His manager asked what happened and he responded " The fish were biting, So dad and I went fishing instead". LEGEND!!
John Paul Young known also as "JPY" or nickname "Squeak" is an Australian singer. His other hits were "Yesterday's Hero", "Standing in the Rain", "Keep on Smilin'", "Pasadena" and "The Love Game".
OMG another great memory from when I was little! This was one of my best faves ever, next to Get Down by Gilbert O'Sullivan, The Night Chicago Died by Paper Lace, and Candida by Tony Orlando and Dawn!
This is a terrific song by this amazing Aussie singer. Remixed for a movie you must watch called Strictly Ballroom that was produced by a ranted producer Baz Luhrmann who also did the movie Moulin Rouge.
So glad to see so many mentions of the movie “Strictly Ballroom” that this was in! What a wonderful movie. You guys should watch it. It has romance, comedy and competitive sport as the theme.
When I was just a kid, my parents would put us to bed, then sit in their bed and listen to the radio. I remember this song on many occasions, and I grew to love these old songs. When I hear this song, it brings me back to 1980, or 1981 when I was 5 or 6, and listening to my parents radio in the next room. My parents would actually smoke in their bedroom! Now that is unheard of, but back then, it was not so unusual. I can still remember feeling comfort in the smell of smoke from my parents bedroom. My dad would walk passed the doorway, and motion for me to close my eyes, and my mom would come sit on my bed, and look at me with her ocean blue eyes, and ask "Why aren't you sleeping baby boy?" It blows my mind that my parents were the ages of only 30 and 27 back then. They were so young! I love old music so much!!! If an old car is in front of me in traffic, and I smell the exhaust, that takes me back. I miss those times!
It was featured heavily in the Australian film 'Strictly Ballroom' from the early 90s, you have to feature that in your film reviews. Also Muriels Wedding & Priscilla,Queen of the Desert. Great 90s Aussie films 🙂
Definitely a disco song, written specifically for the German dance club market and became a world wide hit. Was played during multiple Olympic Games opening or closing ceremonies
This classic song became the climatic song of the excellent (but sadly mostly undiscovered by mass audiences) 1993 feel good dance film "Strictly Ballroom" starring real life ballroom champion Paul Mercurio who graduated as a good actor here. I will always associate this song to that film.
another banger from John Paul Young is "Yesterday's hero", a song seemingly about a musician who used to be famous. "take a look at me, I'm yesterday's hero". the song is up tempo despite the lyrics. I guess it's the destiny of most people who were famous at some point in their lives.
Never tired of hearing this, he still performs it with a band, it makes everyone just dance and smile! He's performed it on tv shows and on Dancing With The Stars, and he really drew new fans on the movie Strictly Ballroom! I recommend his Yesterdays Hero! 😍👍
Yes, very much a disco song and hugely popular - especially in Germany (weirdly) As others have mentioned, it was written by two of the members of " The Easybeats" an enormously popular Aussie group from back in the 60s, who sounded every bit as good as The (early) Beatles. I strongly urge you to check out The Easybeats song "Friday on my Mind". I'm sure you'll dig it !
John Paul Young (who's nickname was Squeek) had a string of hits in the 70s, It's A Long Way To Pasadena, Yesterday's Hero, I Hate the Music to name a few. They were all written by Vanda and Young (George Young was Angus Young's brother). They were good pop songs. Then Vanda and Young took a little detour into disco, giving JPY a great song call Standing In The Rain. Love Is In The Air followed, and it had a very similar beat. This song is remembered for Strictly Ballroom, but I prefer Standing In The Rain.
JPY (As he was known in Australia) did a bunch of these Vanda & Young songs with a very similar dance beat and production, and they all did very well in the charts, despite being virtually all the same. It's funny that the older brother of the AC/DC guitarists, who produced their first albums, evolved into doing disco.
Amber’s saying that she is hilarious reminds me of what I tell my wife and son all the time: I talk to myself because sometimes I need to have an intelligent conversation.
For me it’s different, I talk to myself a little quiet and my husband can’t hear me, so he says ‘what?’ I say I was talking to myself and he says, ‘well can you do it in your head ‘so I can’t hear you?’🤣🤣🤣
I used to go to clubs in New Orleans in which they'd play this (even years after it was current) and during the chorus, all the bartenders and patrons would throw huge stacks of napkins into the air... and they'd float down like snow. Kind of a magical shared experience. 🪩 #RobSquadReactions #JohnPaulYoung #LoveIsInTheAir
Two things. First, “Love is in The Air” was a hit in Canada for Martin Stevens, a Francophone artist who sang the song phonetically in English. Sadly, Stevens passed away earlier this year at the age of 69. Second, as others have noted, this was written by Harry Vanda & George Young who were members of The Easybeats. You must check out “Friday On My Mind” which as about as far removed from “Love is In The Air” as you can get. Other great Easybeats songs are “Falling Off The Edge Of The World” and “Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight”.
John Paul Young recorded the song first, but Martin Stevens heard John Paul Young's demo and released his version in Canada before JPY. Vanda and Young wrote a string of hits for JPY of which this is one.
Oh what a flash back for me as an Aussie teen of the 1970s. JPY was huge along with sherbet and skyhooks here. Great aussie acts you should check out. I saw him live a few times
Hi Guys, so many Aussie songs and groups for you to react to, Skyhooks, living in the 70s, Hoodoo Gurus, Mental as anything, it's a Pandora's box of hits
Yeah g'day, WOW, we finally got Squeak with another Harry and George creation, and Harry and George were part of the Easybeats (60s) and they ended up producing a pop of Australian lot of music in the 70s. A note for Jay, George was the older brother to Angus and Malcolm of ACDC he even produced their very early stuff. Harry and George along with working with Squeak, were their own band of 'Flash and the Pan '. See you round like a rissole.
Jay - that wasnt just the bass making that "heavy" sound - that was a Clavinette/Clavichord layered on top of the bass. Think "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder. Thats what gives the lower registers that crunchy "wah wah" effect.
When this song was playing on the radio I was 10 years old but already realized what an awesome song this was and still is. I too have always enjoyed the heavy bass line in the song that you mentioned.
I love the version when JPY is older and he sings it as part of the "Strictly Ballroom" soundtrack. But, he is so young here. It makes me feel very old. LOL 😁
I just added a comment and called him JPY as well - guess it lets people know we are older ........... who cares we had some of the best music around - grew up with stuff like this plus Bubble Gum music and of course have always had Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, David Bowie, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Who, etc. on into our classic pub rock with Cold Chisel all the way thru to Barnsey's Soul Deep albums ........... and so many more local bands. How many people remember that 'The Cockroaches' reformed into 'The Wiggles' ??
So strange, but this song was on my mind right before I saw you posted this reaction! It’s one of those songs that sometimes pops on my mind for no reason 😀 It’s so catchy.
This was a huge hit all over the world! So many beautiful memories of 1978! Even though he grew up in Australia, he was born in my home country of Scotland 🥰

JPY is one of my favorite artists. There is a song called "I Hate the Music". The clip is filmed on a barge in Sydney Harbour beside the Harbour Bridge, in the late 70's. It's an open-air concert with the crowd on the foreshore. If you want a feel-good song this is it, despite the title.
Another of our great Aussies who started life in Scotland!
This was huge, a global hit ,it was everywhere .
He had it remixed for the movie Strictly Ballroom where it was featured at a big dance scene at the end of the movie
I love that movie❤

Please watch the Aussie film 'Strictly Ballroom', which used this song so brilliantly. It is just delightful.
I came to the comments to say the same thing!!!
I second the motion!!
And Muriel's wedding. Think A & J would LOVE the soundtrack 😂
Fantastic film.
I second that. It’s definitely time for some Aussie movie reactions so obviously Strictly Ballroom and of course Muriel’s Wedding
