I’m really glad you do these videos. As a dude, it’s really hard to find vloggers that share my taste in books, but I also really like that you aren’t scared to branch out and read things like “Pride and Prejudice”. Thank you and keep the updates coming!
I read Stoner yesterday and finished it all within 3 hours. Haven't finished a book in one go in a long time. I loved it. It's an honest and clinical examination of an unremarkable man, who for better and for worse, lets his stoicism and passivity drive his life. I really enjoyed looking into the author's interviews and hearing how he thought Stoner was a hero who ultimately led a good life. Definitely plan on reading it again.
I found that interesting too. In the introduction Williams rejected the idea of his life as “sad”. Good to hear your perspective on the book!
I see parallels between John Stoner and Godfrey St Peter in Willa Cather's "The Professor's House". I'm pretty certain that a fan of "Stoner" would enjoy it too.
I just gotta say, I love this channel. So many solid videos
I loved both books by Franzen, such a good writer. Thomas Mann also amazing. I hope you enjoy them.
Looking forward to digging in!
Great haul. The Magic Mountain is going to be one of the best books of your year.
I'm another recommendation for Thriftbooks when buying old books and classics.
Also the Beloved "trilogy' is a very loose trilogy. There's no characters or settings in common and you dont need to read them in order.
Good to know regarding Beloved!
I just finished Stoner--after 1001 people recommended it to me--and loved it (no matter what Steve thinks)! And I can't wait to hear what you think about Morrison! Beloved is a great choice--but I would recommend going back to The Bluest Eye, Sula, and Song of Solomon before biting off the books after Beloved. The first ones are SO strong.
Happy to hear you enjoyed it as well! Steve can shove it haha

Great video. Really good mix. Thanks.
Solenoid is amazing, you’re in for a treat!! What Sean Cotter does in that translation is nothing short of incredible
When it comes to German literature of the 20th century, I'd put Thomas Mann's "Magic Mountain" on the top of the list - so you made a very good choice. Second on my list (as a German) would be "The Tin Drum" by Günter Grass. Anyway: Many of my favorite authors are from the US, e. g. Franzen (read both of your books already) and Paul Auster, who is very popular in Europe; very sad when he died few weeks ago). My European favos are Colm Toibin, Patrick Modiano. Cartarescu still to discover ... (tnx for your hint).
I’ll add those to my list! Thank you! I hope you give Cărtărescu a try soon
I was not aware that you made a video about Pride and Prejudice. I’ll go watch it after this! Those illustrations for Emma look really cool too. Great video!
Thriftbooks is what I use the most. Can choose from numerous editions of each title.
Heart of a Dog is amazing btw. I enjoyed it just as much as I did the Master. Much simpler in execution though. And Solzhenitsyn is a genius.
I discovered your channel through this video. "Beloved" and "Stoner" are both masterpieces in my opinion. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
Happy to have you here! I'm looking forward to reading Beloved
Thomas Mann is one of favourite writers. The Magic Mountain is wonderful.
Best wishes with what you are reading. I hope you get some great stories. I'm currently reading the Count of Monte Cristo. I might be some time!
Gotta love a big book! Hope you’re enjoying it!
Powells bookstore is one of the best. I prefer new books because I'm allergic to paper dust and mold. Solenoid is magnificent. I'm starting Miss Macintosh, My Darling by Marguerite Young. 1320 pages!
Now that sounds like a doorstopper. I’ll check Young out!
Pangobooks is good for used books. Readers selling books, good prices and you'll find several editions.
I typically get my books at my local big bookstore chain (Indigo-Chapters here in Canada) or online if I want a specific translation, but I definitely should check out more local second-hand bookstores. I miss the ambience and feel of them -- and it'll probably be better for my wallet too haha
I buy a lot of books from Abe Books online. I have never had a problem with them.
Do you prefer Hardcover over softcover? I prefer Hardcover. It’s easier on the eyes and feels good in my hands.
Paperback/softcover is easier for notes and transporting but I love a nice hardcover too. Might depend on the book
still waiting for Malazan to get on ur haul :(
In due time my friend! That’s an extensive series but I will get certainly get into it
master and margarita is legitimately my bible and the satire at the aburdity of the soviet system has empowered me to survive and thrive in Russia as an american.
It's truly a gem
Hah! First a copy of "Infinite Jest"! Then a SECOND copy of "Infinite Jest"! And now, not only Franzen but ... "Stoner"! So what you're saying is ... you're Satan?
(but Satan or no Satan, I kinda want that copy of "Solenoid" ...)
You’ll be comforted by the fact that I didn’t enjoy Cormac’s Blood Meridian!
