I used the 30 dollar hood from the time I was in college through all the time I’ve been working. I did buy a fiber metal sugar scoop when I started welding more outdoors. Each are a good hood. But they both do the same thing just with bigger or smaller lenses.
Thanks for the insight!
I have 6 different hoods. One that my dad started with in 1954. They are all used for a specific use set up different ways
The best use for those 30$ hoods is for grade school welding or shop welding and diy ers….
You whant something that last for years and tough as steel get a sugar scoop for me is the best all around!!!!
For pipeline welding with stick ..sugar scoop..and pancake if you have helper and fitters to grind bead passes and buff filler and cap passes for you
For tig welding on industrial jobs that make you wear hard hat while welding ..sugar scoop or fiber metal honey well hood chopped and leather on neck area make sure you get the one with flip up lence… so you can use grinders and buffers without having to wear a or switch to a face shield…
For flux core welding .. again fiber metal Honeywell hood with flip up lence is best for me
For mig welding you can use those big lence hoods since you don’t have to change them every day due to welding spatter
Well said
My grandpa used an old pipeliner with a leather bib when he was laying down and goggles when he was standing up when I first started Apprenticeing I used one of his old helmets 1960s no auto-darkening
I love my 3350 Viking! But you're correct about the bigger hoods and weight. The 3350 is 3 pounds I believe, takes a while to get used to. Wanting to get a sugar scoop though for the more rough work and keep the 3350 for the fancy pinky out tig lol
💯
I’m in high school and been welding with an old speedglas helmet my dad got from his old job. I have been really loving that helmet.
sounds awesome!
Definitely right I did notice a bit of sunburn on the neck
Jackson Safety came out with its' 280PL helmet for pipeline, except it's a flip-up lens which adds more weight.
after 45 years as a coded welder the only then i cared about was weight and neck cover
Only problem I see here is a clear bias 🤣
😬
I mean yes and no the sugar scoop tho is really a great good hood can’t go wrong w it Pipline boiler rooms etc he’s just giving u the professional point of view
Sugar Scoop is my choice of Hood
Shut up nerd go weld flat plate
I have a 40$ miller hood that is still holding strong after ~8 months of daily welding.
I welded for a year in high school and we used the cheaper hoods. Keep your shirts buttoned up for those. Spatter hit my neck once, did not feel good. Burned my neck in a couple of spots and went down my shirt. You get used to it after enough times.
✅✅✅
Lol I have the miller infinity.. today was was welding some stainless 1/16. I had yo throw a sweater over my hood because of the glare… haha
😅
It said $13 for a pack of 6 making it $2 per lens rather than the $1 for the 2 x4. On top of that best welds sells the 4 x 5 for $1. Jackson has the classic “shadow” 4x5 hoods that are used in the field which is the equivalent to these 2x4 pipeliner hoods.
For some reason these aren't available in UK. I've always preferred using a passive helmet.
Overall, this is a highly informative and enjoyable video for anyone interested in engineering. It showcases your talent and expertise while providing valuable insights and inspiration to fellow enthusiasts. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to watching more of your content in the future 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I use a speedglass, best helmet for tig and mig for me
I nw wear bifocals and have a difficult time seeing wear I'm welding. I guess 35 years of welding caught up to me. Anyway I have some welding to do and although costly the Lincoln 4c helmet makes me think I could see the line I need to weld. I know the soap stick line trick already. Any ideas ?
I have the same issue. I like to just put on reading glasses when I weld and set up an led light on my weld. I also have a wide view hobart autodarkening helmet with variable shade so that helps a lot.
Pipeliner is my hood hands down
That wasn't a review or a comparison. He never used or tested the tool store hood, just a lot of "probably, possibly, might, I dunno....
Aslong as it protects your eyes you're fine
I’ll live and die with a pancake man as a farmer by night and a welder by day man great at work and great in the field
I use a Jackson auto darking I bought in 2009
good stuff
Man if I hadn’t already had a family and if I hadn’t started a job I would of traveled down to WWA and been welding pipe!!!
James, what lense do you use in your sugar scoop?
Is rather have the wide lens that that small narrow lense any day. Each person to their own preference to what they like. You just don't like the wider lense welding helmet.
👍
I actually came, hoping for an honest assessment.....
Tigerhood vs pipeliner
I just ordered my pipeliner hood, should I get some clear lenses to protect the actual lens?
Up to you but yes
60 dollars? In Europe everbody uses speedglass. They are 1000-2000 dollars.
What Is the welding hood that you use?
Sugar scoops are 100$
Got mine from an airgas for $55
@@_hbrad4934 Thats the before the inflation looked on the site a week ago said 80
@@_hbrad4934don’t be throwing that number out no more
@@_hbrad4934 nice!!
Got mine already trimmed, with the metal lens spring, and the aluminum headgear fasteners from Pipeliners Cloud for $80.
what about a 300 to 500$ helmet
I've got a Miller Digital Infinity, Pipeliner, and a Miller T94i-R PAPR hood. They all 3 have their uses, but I use the Pipeliner almost exclusively. I use the Digital Infinity for fab work when there's a lot of tacking to do or tig work, the PAPR when I'm in tight spots with bad ventilation or welding all manner of nasty shit, and the Pipeliner for everything else. As far as optical quality, I'd put my Pipeliner right beside the Digital Infinity as long as it has a good lens in it.
Bad welders still weld bad with them. I've also seen alot of young guys spend alot of money on them, bring them on the job super proud, only to be broken hearted when someone either steals it or accedently breaks it. Got 11 years out of my last pipeliner, and currently 4 out of the one I mainly use now.
What brand is the $80 hood?
I had to have neck. Surgery ft flipping hood they say so hood matters
💯
What do you think of Andeli welding masks?
Catch our Instructors' live every Thursdays at 4pm so they may directly answer your questions!
Can someone drop a link to his hood
I think it’s that one
What lens is in your pw?
I was wondering how old you have to be to go the school

Auto darkening helmet sucks. They are worthless
You do you
@@WesternWeldingAcademy mine failed ok . I do like em but my auto darkening helmet lense failed . I still have my gold lense welding helmet. That doesn't fail. . Each has their own liking on Wich helmet they choose. So do you. I still like the auto darkening helmet. But I'll not get another one. Due to it's failure. . Right now. Unless they upgrade it ill might get another. To each their own likings sir . I accepted your feedback.
@@WesternWeldingAcademy I've started out with a small lense helmets with no auto darkening lense. One would have to position the rod at the right spot unless if off it would fail that goes for restarting the welds too. . Far as I know oxyacetylene welding is becoming obsolete. Now they have laser welding. I've seen some mistakes in them too.
@@WesternWeldingAcademy peace. And the pancake helmet. Is good too. . I've done brazing welding too. Wich is soon to be obsolete. Like oxyacetylene welding. . Just chatting lol. Once they upgrade the auto darkening helmet I'll get me one .
@@WesternWeldingAcademy Merry Christmas to y'all.
