  • Hey Good People,
    I started my business because I love making money and I also care about my customers and their wallet. So when it comes to fixing your car, how do you know when you should quit?
    In this video, I'm going to share with you some signs that you should probably quit pouring money into car repairs, and know when to walk away from the car. By understanding when to walk away, you'll save a lot of money in the long run!
    Feels good to upload a new video after a long holiday break. I hope you enjoy it.

    5 years ago, I bought my 97 Honda Accord for short money and although it did need some good mechanical TLC, the engine and tranny were quite sound and the body was in real decent shape. It's been paying me back in reliable service and I like it alot. And it's my first Japanese made car.

    Im a 18 year old and I have a 2010 Toyota Camry with 250,000 miles on it. It currently needs the lower front ball joints and tie rods replaced, which will be around $900, an alignment, and two new tires in the back. I also want to get the passenger side repainted because the clear coat is all faded off from previous body work. I also want to replace the speakers since all of them are blown, which will be around $300 to do. Aside from those problems, the car runs and drives great. The car’s book value is around $4700 in good condition and the work I want/need to do to the car will be about $2300-$2500. I really don’t have the money to go out and buy an $8000-$10000 used car. I have more than enough to fix this car though. If I do end up fixing these problems I want to keep the car for at least another 5 years or so. If anyone can give a suggestion as to what I should do with this car I would greatly appreciate it ❤

    I bought a car for 250 dollars, in the 80's, and a couple months later it began having trouble backing up. I went to a transmission shop to see if they could fix it. They tried changeling the fluid and filter and said he put the same fluid back in it, then he charged me nothing. He told me it looked like it had sawdust in the transmission fluid, and he said it would require a transmission rebuild and my car wasn't worth the cost of the repair. He also said that people would sometimes put sawdust in the fluid to give extra traction to the bands. I thanked him and he told me some kind of oil treatment I could try, and I did put it in, I drove the car for another year and a half. The stuff did seem to help it back up better and I appreciated his honesty. I don't remember what it was I put in it, but when I sold it, I told the guy that bought it the transmission was bad and I did get 200 dollars for it. I will tell you that a 200 dollar car in the 70's, 80's could get you around better than a 1000 -dollar car today, in my opinion.

    Had got me a 2010 Chevy Malibu back in 2016 at 84k miles. Rode that bad boy all the way to 210k miles and I did have to replace the timing chain belt. Never had the check engine light come on the whole time I've owned it. Unfortunately earlier this year I suffered a blown out tire on the interstate and collided to the concrete barrier driver side. Car still ran with nothing on the inside being damaged. I didn't want to let it go. Eventually two months later the check engine light kicked on and started suffering from rough idling. Car no longer starts.
    I still feel if it wasn't for that accident it would have taken me into the 300k range. I could have had it towed and looked at but I decided to go with something newer. As much as I liked that car I didn't want to deal with another unexpected breakdown within another 2 months. I was lucky to still be on the waiting list to have the body repaired so I used that money as a down payment instead. So now I'm the owner of a 2018 Ford Taurus. Got it at 78k miles. Lets see if it can make it to 200k

I’m not sure what it could be but there’s no check engine light and the car operates completely fine. My guess since the transmission is on the driver side maybe it’s the differential chain in the transmission. The noise is mostly on that side of the car the passenger side is silent. Transmission shift perfect so I’m not sure exactly what’s up.

    Got an oil change on my 2010 Chevy Cobalt with 250,000+ miles on it and they think I may need a new timing chain based on noise they heard (check engine light is not on). I plan to get a second opinion on if there actually is an issue, but also debating if it's time to cut the car loose. It's been reliable over the last 7 years and I was hoping to wait for used car prices to get lower before replacing it, but also don't want to waste money.

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor
      @AlexTheCarDoctor  Год назад +2

      Those Chevy Cobalts are decent little cars and can last a while. You’re definitely doing the right thing by getting a second opinion on the chain. I can say that those are problematic on those cars, and either way it would be worth fixing if the car doesn’t have any other issues. Wether the chain goes out now or later, it will, and better to fix it ahead of time. That way it’ll save your engine and buy more time.
      Eventually if you do purchase a new vehicle, I’d advise to keep the Cobalt as a good spare car. Hope this helps 😊

      @Steven M 250,000 miles out of a Cobalt? Lucky dude. Has to be all highway miles. You got your money’s worth out of a notoriously crappy car, I say go find a used 10-15 year old Toyota or Honda in good shape for not too expensive. Good cars for high mileage drivers like you.

    • @MicklowFilms
      @MicklowFilms Год назад

      @@Blakecryderman7244 They’re not notoriously crappy, I still see a ton of them on the road. I’d say if you’re thinking of buying a used 10-15 year old anything (not just Toyota and Honda) you should check the Carfax report to see how many owners it’s had and whether oil, trans fluid, and other things have been changed consistently throughout it’s life. He changes his oil that’s likely why his Cobalt lasted him 250,000+ miles. It pays to take care of your car, no matter the brand.

    • @Blakecryderman7244
      @Blakecryderman7244 Год назад

      @@MicklowFilms well they have a lot of things that gave them a bad rep. Ignition switches being deadly, GM trying to cover that up, stuff like that. My neighbor had to put $5K into his 2006 silver Cobalt in just 10 months of ownership. To top it all off, it didn’t even have 130,000 miles on it. The ecotec engines are notorious for timing chain problems. Just so you know, comparing GM quality with Toyota quality is like comparing Semi truck towing VS Honda ridgeline towing, it just makes ZERO sense. Not saying I haven’t seen a reliable American car before, just know quality differences of things.

    • @MicklowFilms
      @MicklowFilms Год назад

      @@Blakecryderman7244 $5k on what exactly? Timing chain bad? Timing chains don’t typically go bad unless the owner beat the hell out of the car and repeatedly flooring it like it’s Nascar. Still far better as opposed to timing belts that Honda has been using in their vehicles. That can make the timing chain weak and shorten the life of the engine. The ignition switch thing comes from owner negligence. People hanging too many things from their key rings that can make the key bounce around. They literally would’ve had to recall almost every single vehicle made costing them billions. That is why they stopped making the key ignition in favor of push button start. I had a neighbor that bought a Toyota truck thinking they were getting reliability and ended up having nonstop issues with it. The stuck gas pedal issue with runaway vehicles that Toyota had a massive recall and lawsuits for.. They had the frame rust/rot issue. Engine knocking at not even 50k miles. Know another guy that bought a Toyota truck brand new, not even 3k miles in and already having transmission issues with slipping, going out of gear, etc.

    My car doesn't look like that, but I'm in a similar situation. I have a 2007 Toyota Highlander with 222K miles that has no running problem. A/C is shot though. Just dropped it off at a local mechanic (I'm new in town, so I don't know who to trust). They sent me an email. A/C job costs over $2000. They recommended all sorts of other work as well, as if I wanted to rebuild the car from front to back. No payment, liablility insurance only, and I think it could still run for years. I can't see dropping $2000 on a car that old. That's a downpayment on a new SUV with no problems. I've been driving without A/C for a couple of years, and it just sucks.
    I'm afraid if I drop the 2K, it may turn into a money pit, and I'll be coughing up again and again. Is $2000 normal for an A/C compressor and condensor? I thought it would be like $800.

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor
      @AlexTheCarDoctor  Год назад +1

      Well, this is a Toyota we’re talking about. You can get over 100k more miles if not 200k more. I’d invest in it if it’ll bring you comfort. $2000 is a lil steep for a/c work. Depending on where you’re located. It should run you anywhere from $600 - $1500 on average. They maybe trying to rebuild the whole system instead of replacing just the bad component and it’s supporting parts.
