Great video Dave. I really enjoy the snippets of drone footage. Beautiful country! The rifle info is always nice too. Looks like lots of snowpack was melting away from the looks of that creek or should I say river.
I do have a couple of .22BR's, and a .20BR, and a .20 Dasher. But no BRA. But since I already have dies for the Dasher, I'm leaning that way. Or, just another .22-250AI.
Wonderful shooting Guys and may I say brilliant camera work. You Guys are blessed with your shooting grounds Enjoy..I have nothinbg like this in Ireland
Thank you Sir! Much appreciate you taking the time to comment. That stuff is disappearing fast here now, too. My kids won't have any concept of it when they are my age. Just faint memories of their childhood and how it used to be.
Great shooting man. I personally love the 22-250 AI, but in a 1:8 twist so you can use all the range of 22 cal projectiles. The 22 dasher is not a bad choice either, I just havent really experimented with those kinds of chamberings. I like what the availability of components that the 22-250 has compared to others. At the end of the day thats totally up to you and what you are looking to get out of a particular cartridge. I get plenty out of my 223 rems when loaded with the right combo. 60 grain vmax over TAC or varget pushing close to 3200 fps. does a number on yotes and prairie dogs.
I wore out a couple of 8 twist .22-250AI barrels, in one season each, back in the day. Like magic in the wind. But it just got too expensive replacing them every year. So, whichever I do, it's going to be a 12 twist - the Brux is already ordered. And I already have all the dies and components for both the AI and the Dasher. Doesn't make the choice any easier.
Great video and shooting. I use the same Swarovski's. My pushbutton synthetic housing just deteriorated and fell apart. I returned them for repair.. "Rock Rash" LMAO..
Great country love the drown shots. I have put some thought into the cartridges. The long range rifles all use heavier bullets which are expensive. You can’t beat a 55 gr. 22 cal. For economy. Years ago gave up the .243 with 65gr VMax. For.204 Ruger because A thousand rounds a year is cheaper. I load .223 and 22-250 you can buy 55 gr bullets in bulk. 55 gr Hollow point. They shoot great for around .13 cents lot of 1,000 for $950 you can buy 6,000.
I'm rocking a fairly old set of Swarovski EL 8.5x42's. Just love how good the glass is. I prefer the 8.5x over the 10x, myself, for the wider field of view and a bit easier to hold steady. My buddy Steve is using an older 10x42 Swarovski rangefinding binocular. He likes 10x better. The glass isn't as clear on the rangefinder, but it sure is handy!
Dave, obviously you and your partner are ranging the targets. Tell us what the various distances are. Difficult to judge on the old flat-screen or smartphone. Thank you for sharing the hunt.
Nice video lads and some sweet rifles. Im in Australia and i have just built a 243ai on a defiance action and a 22x47 lapua on a nesika action it pushes a 85.5gr berger at 3296fps keep it up lads
I have shot the 22 Dasher as well as the 22-250 AI. I prefer the 22-250 AI as I have found the brass is easier for me to source. I trading the 22 Dasher to a friend who already shot a 6 Dasher so brass was easier for him to get. I just completed a 22-284 starting with the 284 Shehane as the base. Really fast and loud, with expected short barrel life. With a 30" 1-7 twist barrel I am still working up loads, but the barrel heats up fast. Three rounds is all I will shoot before pulling the bolt and letting the rifle cool. I've been loading Puf-Lon as I do for all my "barrel burners" to see if it will cut down on throat erosion. With my magnums, I have noticed less throat erosion using Puf-Lon over the powder charge.
Makes total sense. My old, dearly departed buddy Blaine shot a .22-284 for coyote. His was a 14 twist and he used the old 64 gr. Berger at, I forget exactly what velocity, but very fast, around 4,000 fps. It was a heckuva rig. I've got enough brass, bullets, powder, primers, dies, everything to wear out either an Ackley or Dasher, so that's not a consideration for me. I think it's going to come down to which 'smith has precisely which reamer. I'm a stickler for necking and throating. If a guy I like has the reamer I want for one or the other, with the necking and throating I want, that's what I'll probably end up doing.
Secretly pleased that my eye for critters in decidedly western topography is still acute. Once I became familiar with their outlines from various angles, acrobatics ensued. Ohio native, Wyoming lover.
The .20 Dasher is just an absolute laser beam. And the Lapua BR brass is always so nice to work with. I need to get it threaded for a suppressor though.
I have a 22-250ai and a 22 Dasher. The Dasher is an 8 twist, ai is 12. Dasher is a single shot, so not sure about how it feeds in a repeater action so that’s something to consider. I prefer my ai to the dasher. But i can see the attraction to a Dasher, especially if you haven’t done one yet. Thanks for the video!
Single shot won't bother me for a 'chuck rifle. Although, I sure don't mind having a good feeding repeater, either - and the AI does feed just fine in this action.
22 dasher or 22 BR would be my choice for a great long range varmint rifle. But it’s hard to argue with the results you’re getting with that 22-250 AI.
It's a tough choice! Since Greg Tannel isn't taking on any new work now, I don't know yet who I'm going to have do the chamber job. So the choice might come down to who has what exact reamer.
Thanks for taking me along. Good footage bud. What kind of round count do you expect out of the 20 Dasher? 6 Dasher is one of the most accurate rigs I ever shot. Beautiful country.
IF I was going to step away from the 22-250, I would look at the 22GT. You can get factory Alpha brass for it, shoots really really well, has more velocity than a Dasher or BR, it will feed better and has comparable barrel life. With that twist rate, I'm assuming you are shooting lighter weight bullets, so a dasher or BR are probably going to need a spacer kit in the mag. Also, you can use H4350, and SRP with the GT which are easier to come by.
The GT is a sexy design for sure. But since I already have all the stuff for either a .22-250AI, or a .22 Dasher, brass, bullets, powder, primers, dies, everything, it's going to be one of those two.
If you google "wreck wrap" you'll see quite a few different brands. I'm not sure which brand Steve is using right now, he's tried at least a couple. The stuff works great for protecting the paint though.
Yes, exactly. It's a Wreck Wrap type product and it does an amazing job of preserving the paint when scrubbing up against sage brush and juniper trees for a weekend.
I absolutely love my Dasher AND my 22 Creed. Both rounds absolutely punish the critters! If I rebarreled the 22-250 I would consider an 8 twist for the higher BC bullets. Just my .02

@@DaveAffleck I think I need to build a 20br. I bet that with some 40gr bergers would be bad medicine on coyotes.
It would be. I shot a few coyote with my .20BR and some custom 45 gr. bullets that aren't available anymore and they were a hammer on coyotes.
Fantastic video and great shooting!
Thanks!

looks like somewhere in the pacific northwest man.

If you google "wreck wrap" you'll see quite a few different brands. I'm not sure which brand Steve is using right now, he's tried at least a couple. The stuff works great for protecting the paint though.
Ive been kicking the idea of a 22 creedmoor.

Yeah I would think that country would make a man think twice about throwing a high dollar truck out there
How do you cook them?
Ideally, fried in butter and garlic. I've eaten them just pan fried in bacon grease though and it was pretty good.

It helps a lot with preventing deep scratches from rubbing up against sage brush and juniper trees for miles and miles at a time.
