- Here is a detailed look and explanation on how i made my own dash piece to mount a touch screen in my 1st gen Toyota tacoma.
While this video doesn't show the build in process it should help you if you are attempting to do something similar. I do plan to make a video of the actually process of cutting and mounting soon!

Headunit mounts to aluminum with home made mounts.
You know people such as what your doing takes for granted that everyone knows the tools. But you where considerate to realize this and explain what vice grips are and what they look like.its amazing how someone will take on a project with proper direction . Good work.
Dude I just installed a 6" head unit in my 1st gen and didnt think about doing this at all. Looks clean and the 10" screen is awesome! Well done.

Having electric controls instead of cables and the radio position, shows the minor differences between the Tacoma and a Hilux.

could you explain how to wire the cameras and switches to the screen? Such a cool setup!
He's using a on-off-on switch. Looks like the cameras are not tapped into the reverse lights, so all the switch is switching between is the 2x RCA connections between cameras.
You can also do this by using a 5 pin relay to switch between the rca connections
You can also achieve the same effect by using a 5 pin relay where 87a is the main camera, 30 is connected to head unit, and 87 is connected to the 2nd camera. You can use a regular rocker switch to activate the relay.
This will result in a overriding the main camera with the 2nd camera.

You’re a genius. Obviously, when Toyota put the radio on the bottom was not thinking about the future. The location where the radio right now is way too low for a modern double din 7” screen today with navigation. I was thinking the same thing as well to move the climate controls down and the radio up. I will see where I end up with this project. Great job.
Such a cool mod! I swapped in an Android head unit and dont like how low down it is either.

That looks so good. That screen is huge and so nice looking! Seems like a great deal on the head unit. I was looking at going with an android head unit a couple years ago, but ended up going with a double din Sony running carplay/android auto- it was like $125 (used) vs $250-300 for the android unit. I'd love to hear a review of that head unit after you've used it for a while! I like mine, but that huge screen is really tempting!

@@goofygamezmcpe-gtav5016 I picked up a Sony XAV-AX200 from eBay with a tiny scratch on the screen. I see them on there right now for around $200. Could probably get them for cheaper if you wait it out. I think the AX-100, AX-200, AX-1000 and AX-5000 are all pretty similar and show up used pretty often.

Also, having had a 1st gen taco in my youth... I agree 100% with what you said about the positioning of everything in the center console. It was a small part of the reason I switched to a 3rd gen 4runner haha. (also because it was a 2wd taco)

Boy you know what you just did, you need to patent that. And possibly start your own business on custom dashboard. That is ingenious. I have a 04 Tacoma Prerunner. And that's why I never changed out my radio cuz the very fact it was too low. You really need to look in on see how you can start your own business doing this

I like it but here in Texas, covering up the AC vents is suicide. Curious to see what could be a work around for that?
diverting/repiping to a set of vents under the dash, pointing up -- like some of the vintage/classic car setups might work.

Nice, I have a 1st gen tundra and I am curious what the measurement is from the unit box to the tablet? In the first gen tundras the dash overhangs the radio. So I need to see if the distance will pass that overhang. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I’ve got a 1st gen sequoia I’m wanting to do something similar to. I really thought this whole time it was a iPad or something. Knowing now it’s a double din, I’m lost..how is it mounted in there with it sticking out from the dash? Would really like to see behind the screen.

I’m thinking of doing the same thing sorta but build it off the original plastic and use fiberglass to mold it sort of like this, then can just reroute the ducting to lower vents. How do you like that radio so far? Looks really good in there, way better than the boss touchscreen I currently have. & when you switch to camera modes, does it happen to cut off your music? I hate that about mine right now!

You can currently use GIA maps with carplay. I use google maps app as well!
What tire size are you running and lift ? Also have you ever had an issue with driver side floor board being moist ?

you dont use aircond? aircond blower outlet blocked by the screen
i do use it, and no its not blocked, it still comes out just not directly at you unless you lower the screen.
