- We love video games, and Hollywood claims to as well. But... They just can't get it right. There's literally never been a critically 'good' video game movie adaptation but there have been many 'very bad' ones, including Mortal Kombat, House of The Dead, Street Fighter, Hitman, Double Dragon, Silent Hill: Revelation, Postal, In The Name of The King, and Bloodrayne, so here are the worst of the worst.

Come on then, let's hear it. Which of these stinkers have you seen and actually enjoyed?
Most and....None ;)
Mortal kombat... I was 6 and I thought seeing my favorite characters was amazing... later on o revisited the movie and realized how bad it was...
Mortal kombat, i watched it again and again when i was little.
Came back grown up, still enjoyable, but maybe for the nostalgia
Double Dragon was great!!
Is there a reason why you call him Bar-log instead of Balrog on the Street fighter bit? I'm worried that's what you've always thought he's called 😳
Ben’s slow meltdown when mentioning Uwe Boll throughout the list was hilarious. Loving the content, guys!
This could easily have been a top 10 Uwe Boll videogame movies. His adaptation of FarCry is also rubbish nonsense!
@@251TheMechanizedSingfantry He made a movie from Farcry???
What is worst House of the dead Or alone in the Dark
I think Uwe Boll has been directing my life
No!
@@CloneCommanderQutibahAlFarouqi
Oh yeah!!!!!
"FROM NIGHTMARE DIRECTOR Uwe Boll!!!"
Critics be damned, the first MK movie IS awesome.
I enjoyed it but the special effects aged very badly but still one of the better video game movies.
lol Critics on rotten tomato are about as trustworthy as a call from a Ugandan call centre about your broken internet connection >_
Better tha the new one it had blood in it.
@@TheGr1IsHere you got to understand that the cgi was great for 1994-95 it was way ahead of it's time though
@CYB3R2K30 is that a sentence?
I was blocked on Twitter by Critical Nightmare Director Uwe Boll when I pointed out that people weren't criticising him because they were jealous of him, but because House of the Dead was a shit film. That's my Critical Nightmare Director Uwe Boll story, thank you for reading.
You can imagine when a game publisher gets approached to make a movie based on their game and then they find out that only one guy wants to make it and that is Uwe Boll they get an instant feeling of regret. Or in the case of all movies based on Capcom games Paul W. S. Anderson will direct it and his wife Mila Jovovich will star in it.
"Directed by critic nightmare Uwe Boll"
HE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS
"Uwe Bol's worst reviewed film" ... that is f-ing saying something.
There’s a recurring theme to this list. A critically nightmarish theme.
Some very funny trivia about the Alone in the Dark adaptation:
1.- Even Uwe Boll thought it was shit, so for the DVD release, he went back and edited out each and every scene involving Tara Reid from it. No matter how important they were for the story at the moment. So, the incoherent mess that it already was just got far worse.
2.- Atari and Eden games hated this movie so much and were terrified of fan backlash, so the originally planned Alone in the Dark 5 tie in to the movie got cancelled and reworked into a reboot of sorts. Ironically, this reboot was received even worse than the movie by fans of the franchise and lead to Atari threatening anyone speaking ill of the game with lawsuits. Uwe Boll expressed disappointment in the movie commentary, since Christian Slater was originally supposed to appear in the game.
Bonus: The music video for Wish I Had An Angel by Nightwish was directed by Uwe Boll as a tie in to this film. Shortly after the film's release, Nightwish released a new version of the video editing out all the footage from the movie due to critical backlash.
Huh, that music video actually looks pretty decent.
I'm going to shout 'From Uwe Boll' when I do a particularly smelly fart from now on.
I legit don't even think I ever knew the Chun LI movie existed and no way would I have ever correctly guessed what In the Name of the King was supposed to be based on
No wonder Uwe Boll has now left the film industry, and opened a restaurant. Lets hope his food is better than his movies!
This list gives me a nostalgic feeling back to when Ben did lists for name redacted, but now he has more creative and is (hopefully) happier now.
The most important takeaway from this it that Bob Hoskins' legacy is safe.
LJN: We are masters of disasterous movie to video game adaptations!
Uwe Bol: Turn it around. Now, hold my beer.
Seriously. At least some LJN games are actually kinda playable.
I have this saved on my “watch later” list just for the Uwe Bole breakdown and I watch it every now and thank. Thank you Ben, you are a wonderful person
Uwe Boll made Vex'ahlia sad? He's even more of a monster than I thought.
How is Super Mario Bros not on here tho?
It somehow managed to score a whopping 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, so it narrowly escaped the list.
because even that movie where the two actors had to remain drunk to get through it is still much better than anything Uwe Boll could make.
because its a so bad its good movie
Two words: Uwe Boll.
Ah yes my favourite Silent Hill monsters, the Confusing Feelings Nurses...
Detective Pikachu looks genuinely good... I dare to dream...
The greninjas look crap tho
I am a day 1 pokemon fan and the movie was quite good. I enjoyed it
@@beastunleashed657 you look crap
Love that banbury shout out. It's better now . They have rambo the game
I think anyone who allowed Uwe Boll to direct a movie, deserved to have lost all their money. Stupidity literally comes at a price
It's kinda amazing that Eww Boll wasn't on the list more. If anyone could have made all 10 of the 10 worst video game movies, it would be him.
Fun Fact: Uwe Boll made a Vietnam movie called Tunnel Rat, about the guys who cleared out those Viet Cong tunnels they would use. Why they got him to do such a great concept is beyond me...
I'm surprised Uwe Boll is allowed near a director's chair at all. But after making that many bad movies I get the feeling a biographical film about Uwe Boll would be very entertaining. Something along the lines of "The Disaster Artists."
Bloody hell - all that yet no Super Mario Bros. They must be godawful!
I watched Sonic earlier this year with my kids and it's actually alright.
Mortal kombat is still one of the best videogame movies along with the first silent hill film , neither are perfect but there is plenty to enjoy , also the tv series from the late 90s "Mortal kombat Conquest" is also pretty fun.
Final Fantasy Spirit Within was an unfortunate marketing error in my opinion. Coming out before Final Fantasy X and being the single greatest advancement in CG animation by worlds at the time - they made 2 different mistakes that killed the films chances for success.
A) They made a sharp and provocative Sci-Fi opera not unlike some of the great anime's such as Ghost in the Shell and Armitage the Third. This may have appealed to Sci-Fi fans. The CGI full-feature film would have attracted cinematography buffs for the novelty of seeing a movie in realistic CGI... but that crowd at the time thought video games and people liking them were lame, and slapping "FINAL FANTASY! BY SQUARE! THE COMPANY THAT MAKES FINAL FANTASY!" all over it made them avoid it when it literally has nothing in common with any Final Fantasy or video game by any company at the time whatsoever.
Which brings us to mistake B) They made a sharp and provocative Sci-Fi opera not unlike some of the great anime's such as Ghost in the Shell and Armitage the Third that is NOTHING like a Final Fantasy game or any Square property and being promised a Final Fantasy movie - got a sharp and provocative Sci-Fi opera. This annoyed people expecting a Final Fantasy movie preventing them from taking it for what it was at the time. Especially since Final Fantasy X was being advertised at the time making FF fans mouths water.
If they had called it "Spirits Within - the worlds first full CGI movie with voice acting by Alec Baldwin and Donald Sutherland!" and left the video game affiliation out; it would have been a smash hit with casual film buffs and fans of the art of cinematography. And Square fans would have known it was a movie by them and went to see it for what it was without any false expectations.
I love the movie - as a Sci-Fi epic. I worked at a video store a few years ago and would throw cult obscurities on the TV's while I worked to get people renting things they normally wouldn't know exist. Everyone actually thought the movie was amazing and it rented quite well - they were especially shocked to learn when it came out and they never heard of it.
Ah, my favourite Street Fighter character. Barlog 🤦♂
This list should be renamed 10 Uwe Boll movies.
Thumbs up for Laura Bailey
I forgot Double dragon! I remember renting that VHS soooo many times as a kid because for video game films... it was one of the better ones.
I only seen (rented really) Street Fighter to see Kristin Kreuk.
The bowling alley in Banbury closed last week Ben! 😬😬
Mortal Kombat is now a cult classic
In the name of the king - or in my group of friends - that film where Jason Statham punches a horse!
Can we get a 10 Least Bad Video Game Movies Ever Made?
Also shout out to Banbury! I proposed to my Dutch partner in the restaurant Little Amsterdam there! It was her first taste of dutch food in 5 years!
When Bison came into you're town, and destroyed your life... it was everything to you.
For Bison... it was Tuesday. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One if the funniest lines ever in a bad movie!
I’ve never understood the hate the two Silent Hill movies have received. Granted, Revelations was inferior to the first film, but both did a hell of a job capturing the essence of the games, at least in feel and atmosphere, in my humble opinion.
Okay, now I WANT to see Postal....
Says a lot about how bad these movies were that the super Mario bros movie didn’t make it.
Mortal Kombat Annihilation also gave us a kick ass soundtrack. Half the songs are used in the first few fight scenes, while the rest of the songs were used in the ending credits.
OMG Ben just did a top 10 video. Getting flashbacks from that other top ten channel empire.
Yep, they left that place cause they wanted to do some other stuff, but vidiots unfortunately did not made money so now they make list again, stupid algorithms
@@sulfurfiend1237 true but here they do 2 lists a week but are allowed to do things besides lists which is what the other place only seemed to want, rarely doing anything else. They also have more control over what lists they do or so it seems so far.
Sulfur Fiend actually they left because the management was absolute shite
They can also do any list that they want, rather than what they are told to do so there will always be more effort and heart in these than Name Redacted.
Wait...BloodRayne is probably the furthest you can get from a survival horror game that you can get. The only thing that it has to belong to that genre is well, the horror aspect but even that's a bit generous. If I had to define what genre it was, it'd definitly be a pure '00's Hack n' Slash action game complete with bullet time and a dual wielding protagonist that was quite the big trend back then.
The first game while not being anywhere near "game of the year" material was actually pretty fun and the story for what it was, with it's campy, over-the-top horror tropes complete with vampires, occult, and evil nazi's, was pretty cool. The second game though, kinda strayed from the original's formula and wasn't nearly as good. But even the first game isn't something I'd want to go back and play, as it's hasn't really aged well with time. (They did come out with a "remastered" version of both games recently so there's always that option.)
It honestly could've made for a good movie, if they focused more on the crazy story. As it was, it just turned into a horrible cash-grab affair, as most video game movies around that era where, and just felt like a cheap Blade knock-off.
Uwe Boll... I want to know who keeps giving that man money to make movies. It was so hilarious listening to Ben that I had to pause the video at house of the dead to catch my breath and stop laughing so i could listen to the rest of the list. In the name of the king is probably the only movie with jason statham i have never seen, but sadly I did see bloodrayne, and it was horrible and for some stupid reason i cannot fathom years later, i saw alone in the dark in the movie theater and i swear i will never watch another Uwe Boll movie ever again.
Great list guys, keep up this excellent work.
Fun fact: He kept getting funding because he exploited a loophole in German tax laws that allowed him to write off the losses of his films that flopped.
My kids laughed their heads off at Mortal Kombat Annihilation. It was so so bad. They lost it when Scorpion said SUCKERS!
“10 Worst Video Game Movies Ever Made”
Or the alternative title:
“Why Uwe Boll Should Not Be Allowed to Make Movies”
Seriously, that fucking lunatic has done more damage to movies based off video games, than just about anybody else I can think of; he’s like a less talented Ed Wood, who has suffered numerous serious concussions.
I've seen all of these (as rentals). With the exception of Blood Rayne which I seen at the theater not remembering it was made by Toilet Bowl. I actually got a refund from the theater! THANK GOODNESS.
Pfft! 😂
The only one here I've watched anything of is Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and it was here on RUclips, where it was in a compilation of the "Worst Moments in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation." I love Warcraft, Rampage, and Tomb Raider, so I'm glad those were at least able to make a great deal of money despite very mixed reviews, and I very much hope the new Mortal Kombat is just as epic as its trailer makes it appear.
Mortal Kombat was awesome!
Nothing insightful or interesting to say just that this video made me laugh at loud. You are an artist Mr Potter!
I was so confused at first when I heard that the best game-to-film adaptations were Tomb Raider and Rampage. I was like..."But what about Sonic? And Sonic 2 as well? There's also been some good game-based series with the Castlevania anime that is amazing, The Cuphead Show, and also Arcane". Then you brought up original movie Sonic's absolutely _disgusting_ legs and then I realized it. This is an older video and not new.
Honestly though, we are making progress with game adaptations! I think it's a case of gaming moving forward and becoming more accepted, so now we have newer blood working on these films that actually get games, instead of the older guard who likely don't understand games as much and didn't grow up with them.
same, except i think rampage is underrated
Oh yeah? I haven't seen it. Maybe I'll check it out some time.
@@luliby2309 granted I like silly giant monster movies so ymmv
I really liked/like Silent Hill: Revelations... ☹
Sonic the Hedgehog broke the video-game movie curse twice, and it was glorious.
Meanwhile, Netflix has repeatedly and vigorously screwed Resident Evil harder than it's ever been screwed before. Which, considering the Paul WS Anderson movies are horrible in just about every way, is saying something.
I think we can safely assume that Uwe Boll should never be allowed to be involved with any video-game-to-movie adaptation ever again
Even Ed Boon hated Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
Barlog? Seriously Ben? BARLOG?!?
How am I the only person who's noticed this?
And that's why Hideo Kojima actually confirmed that he would never let Uwe Boll get his hands on Metal Gear Solid.
In all fairness, he's directed more movies than anyone in this comment section. Lol
Every time I see a list like this, I hope against all hope that maybe, just maybe, by some miracle they'll remember to include the 2009 Tekken movie. But that movie, despite being pretty terrible, keeps escaping lists like this because no one ever seems to remember it even exists.
To be perfectly fair, it's not AS bad as some of the movies on this list, but it could still dangle somewhere near number 9 or 10. I don't know what it is about this specific movie that makes it fall into such deep obscurity that so many people seem to forget about it or never even heard about it. The gaming franchise on which it is based is adequately popular and well known, yet this movie slinked away into the shadows of obscurity before anyone even so much as glanced in its general direction.
I did not even like Sonic before I saw the movie, which was great and basically locked the idea that Jim Carrey IS Dr.Robotnick, while The Pikachu movie was forgettable, I don't even remember what it was about anymore, as while the Sonic movie focused on being entertaining and was fully adapted to be a movie, Detective Pikachu focused so much on establishing lore in a different world that it felt more like a guide to their world rather than a movie, the plot itself was very thin, also Sonic was a movie for the whole family, were as Detective Pikachu was both childish, and too complicated for children
0:45 This is how you can tell that this video was made before Detective Pikachu and the 2020 Sonic movie ever got released.
I'm guessing next up are the "10 Worst Movie Video Games Ever Made" as they are never good either. Although I do kinda miss playing the Cars game on PS2...
I can already guess number 1: E.T.
What about Far Cry from List legend Uwe Boll?
i dont get it,.. how does boll get more and more adaptations if the movies he releases are all bloody awful?
Who the hell keeps funding Bolls movies, it should be against the law for him to direct another movie ever again.
Uwe Boll for video game movies is what Ljn was for the NES in terms of video games.....
...though wait, that's actually insulting Ljn, since at least they indeed DID have 1 or 2 decent games like Spiderman Maximum Carnage for the SNES.....
Know the best part about Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark?
Listening to Nightwish playing over the end credits!
I enjoyed hearing Mnemic in the gun fight scene that was (I think) in a dark parking garage. Terrible movie, but the soundtrack is pretty good.
@N P Exactly
You leave the original Mortal Kombat out of this, Potter! >:(
Uwe Boll: Tax Evaders Favourite Director
Hey u guys said "BARLOG."....his name's BALROG
Who the fuck is Barlog?
The boxer that worked with M. Bison; who killed someone in the ring; and was a professional boxer before that.
Think the last decent video game movie I’ve seen was Ratchet and Clank lol
Ratchet and Clank deserves more love
I don't understand why Street Fighter and Double Dragon get all the hate they do. At the time they were made, the perception was that video games were for kids. As a result, these were action movies made for kids so of course they're going to be campy and silly. I can't remember being a kid and seeing an age appropriate action movie that wasn't silly. People look at these and judge them like they should be Bloodsport or something, and end up completely missing the point.
Ooh eager for the inverse, of the worst Videogames based off of Movie Properties
1:07 boy, this joke did not age well...
Boy, haven't the Sonic movie mention didn't age well considering the February 2020 delay. And a year after this video, Sonic broke the video game movie curse.
Btw, video game films aren't terrible, they're hit or miss. Even the most talented of directors seem to screw up sometimes, but with every terrible video game adaption for cinema, there will be some exceptions to lighten things up.
first played house of the dead in Weston Super Mare at the pier before it burnt down, good times!
As a shonk, the use of the term 'shonky' in a negative way makes me slightly sad
I don't care what anyone else says or thinks; I love the The Postal Movie.
I've only seen two of these. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and Double Dragon. I thought Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was tolerable thought far worse then the first movie. I hate Double Dragon though and still curse whatever dark force guided my cousin to that section of the movie rental store to pick a movie for a sleepover.
I'm also fond of Wing Commander, which I'm surprised isn't on the list. Most of it is bad but I like the capital ship battle scenes, and if they ever make a director's cut adding the deleted scenes back in I would buy it because IMO the editing for chopping scenes was bad. In particular there's one scene late in the movie that never made sense to me or anyone I know who saw the film. That's because the events that would allow it to make sense were in a deleted scene and apparently the editors didn't realize that without the cut material the scene makes no sense.
BARLOG EH
The fact that DOA isn’t in the top ten days how bad these are.
Uwe Boll doesn't make movies, he makes money laundering opportunities.
I love Uwe Boll so much. The dude’s so weird, makes some of the most laughably horrible movies ever and he even offered some of his most vocal critics online to BOX HIM IN A SANCTIONED MATCH
If he challenges Ben I think they should bribe Simon Miller to fight in his place.
@@The_Chef2511 I'll gladly step in for Ben
I saw Mortal Kombat Annihilation in the theater shortly after its release. I was one-third of the audience.
Anyone that says their profession is a movie critic, has some audacity. Watching movies and forming a personal opinion shouldn't be too hard
You know, as muchas Uwe Boll sucks, let us not forget he convinced his internet trolls to come box him on PPV and fucked them all up.
Chun-Li was known for her very chinese looks (nothing racist but she had strong/defined & exotic asian eyes), she had a pair of thick power muscled legs.....she wasn't a skinny tan american looking girl. FFS.... -_- THE WORST!!!!!
🤦🏿♂️ Oh God What Is Hollywood Doing To My Childhood
You forgot Super Mario Bros
Here's a dishonourable mention: Giratina and The Sky Warrior.
When MK:A was #2, I assumed that Mario Bros was going to be number one! I'm amazed it's not here.... and if it is, my brain completely blocked it out.

Would it be fair to blacklist every actor who has ever starred in an Uwe Boll film?
I always thought Silent Hill was a solid horror movie, I didn’t turn it off and the ending is pretty cool…
Well.. let's hope Uwe Boll doesn't see this and try challenging Ben to a fight.
i knew the house of the dead and bloodrayne would be in this video, as those films are cinematic excrement
Street Fighter 2 The Animated Movie, Mortal Kombat The Movie, and Castlevania Netflix are the best video game adaptations.
