How good was Pablo Aimar actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Wesley Sneijder who played for Benfica, Valencia and River Plate for most of his career, not only one of the greatest playmakers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Pablo Aimar ranks and just how good he actually was.

No, the nickname (a few persons knows it, even in Argentina) it's because his father was known as "El payo" Aimar. So, his son was called soon "El payito" Aimar (diminutive of "payo", that could be understand like something similar to "blonde" meaning). But a TV futbol comentator at that time, confused the 2 words, that are similar, and called him "El payasito" and the public knew him with this name. But originally was "El payito" because of his father "El payo".

He always looked like he was having a knock about in a park, had a very casual easy style and made the game look ridiculously easy. There is a reason why top professionals loved watching Aimar. It wasn't just what he could do with the ball which in itself was staggering, but he specialised in crafting some of the most intricate and beautiful passing exchanges you'll see in football, it was as if he could see 5 passes ahead. More often than not, he'd start a move then few passes afterwards he'd be there to finish it off. He truly played the beautiful game.

An immensely talented, skilful, and creative offensive playmaker, with exceptional flair and an eye for goal, who was wonderful to watch at his best, and who obviously served as an inspiration for Messi. He had an incredible spell with Valencia at his peak, dominating in La Liga, the Champions League, and the UEFA Cup, and had some good runs with Argentina, even though he also struggled under pressure and to win a title, like many other number 10s since Maradona retired. His career could've been even greater though in hindsight, and his peak didn't last a long time unfortunately, even though he still had some decent performances elsewhere. But he probably deserved to be a Ballon d'Or finalist at some point throughout his peak though in my opinion. I feel like he is underrated at times and isn't remembered to the degree of other players who probably weren't at his level.

It still haunts me today that I can't find it anywhere one of the coolest goals ever scored, it was in La Liga when Aimar scored for Valencia, way out on the right side, haters will say he was trying to cross it but it was obvious he was trying to chip the keeper but the beast part was the ball hit the bar, left post, ground, right post and in. I've watched countless of Valencia's best goals and Aimar's goals and highlights but this goal seems to be lost in the archives.

One of my favourite players of all time. I learned about him during his River days thanks to Championship Manager 3, where he's one of the only players in the game with a perfect 200 potential ability every time, and consistently turns into one of the best players in the game. I followed his career intently after that, to the point where my love of him became an in-joke with a few classmates for many years.
Though he never quite hit the heights he was predicted to, he produced more magical moments than so many who won more trophies and played for bigger clubs. An icon, and was so happy to see him involved in the backroom staff with Argentina during their 2022 World Cup campaign, finally seeing the international success I always hoped he would have in a different way, and being there for arguably the greatest moment in the career of the kid who idolised him. There's such a beautiful poetry to football at times.
