That moment with the overhead light with just her face filling the frame - was THE moment - that cemented Dietrich's iconic, legendary status.

Absolutely, and it's not hard to see why!

I've read that Marlene had a say in how she was lit. She knew what it did for her! This film is the ultimate in shadowy, beautiful lighting - among other aspects.

My favourite Lines: "Are you married" Pause, sultry look. "It took more than one man to change my name to Shanghai Lil...."

Anna May Wong, one of my all-time favourites. She steals every scene she's in with minimal dialogue. Wonderful actress. Marlene Dietrich was also iconic. And the cinematography is still stunning to look at ninety years later.

I'm so pleased you appreciate this film. I love it. lighting, atmosphere, Dietrich And Clive Brook, great look. the cigarette scene!! it's probably one of my top 3 Dietrich films. a lesser known film, but one that I really like is the lubitsch comedy romance "Angel".

When I first saw the title of this video, I thought "Dang, to qualify, you don't need much!" Thinking it was the panned Penn & Madonna Shanghai Surprise :p

That famous scene you mention with Marlene Dietrich in the lighting is very seminal. Queen duplicated it on the cover of one of their album covers and Madonna mimicked a lot of the lighting effects in the video to Vogue.

The difficulty with fans serving up these old movies, generations after they were made, is the inevitable mistakes wh grate on the ears of old fucks like me...Director Frank Borzage's last name isn't pronounced Bor-zay-gee & never was...try Bor-zhahz! Soon, though, fandom's erroneous guesses will prevail as no one'll be around to say otherwise...

Borzage told The Literary Digest his name was pronounced "in three syllables, and g in get, bor-zay'gee." (Charles Earle Funk, What's the Name, Please?, Funk & Wagnalls, 1936.)
I do like to try... *shrug*
