    I wanna see more channels that primarily talk about CBMs give their comic reading lists! especially the ones outside of the big two. This year had quite a few amazing comics going on, I recommend the Zdarsky Daredevil (haven't read his Batman), Waid's World Finest and Flash, and what's probably my favorite, Jed MacKay's Moon Knight which is so good that it coming out alongside the show made me like the show much less in comparison

    I've been wanting to get to Woman of Tomorrow for a while now, keep hearing great things. Nice House on the Lake might just be my favorite experience with the horror genre ever, big Tynion fan, up there for one of my favorite reads of the year. I've heard mixed things about Human Target, but you've pitched it well, might check it out. Once and Future is something I keep hearing about and it seems like something I'll eventually find myself reading someplace or another. Ram V was the Catwoman writer after Jones, if that's what you were thinking of (the little of it I've read so far was pretty good). I haven't started Batgirls yet, and I was really excited for it when it was announced (I'm a big fan of Cass and Steph and DC's been shafting them for years), but I've heard it hasn't treated them too well so I'm a bit nervous.

      I was really afraid when AXE was announced, particularly as I read the Eternals and X runs leading up to it (controversially, I have enjoyed Aaron's Avengers run, but that felt rather immaterial to AXE, anyway), but it really delivered some fantastic moments (almost everything with Uranos on Arakko and its fallout, but also exploration of some characters like Exodus, and a wonderful treatment of Nightcrawler) - one of my favourite crossover events I've read, at least in a long time though maybe ever.

    I didn't manage to read a lot of comics this year (but at least two books) and since I'm from Germany, most of the books end up like 6 months later than when they are released in the U.S. Luckily, my vendor tries to get it started with more English books close to release.
    But of the ones I read this year (that unfortunately are not from this year), my favourites are Inferno which is such a fantastic X-Men "event" and Zdarsky's Daredevil run where I jumped in at the point where Elektra takes over for Matt. I got the prelude for Devil's Reign today and look forward to read it in the next days.

    I've been all into the Massive-Verse. Especially The Dead Lucky. The new Tim Drake series is excellent, though I don't like the art. It focuses on his detective skills instead of his fighting. Tini Howard's Catwoman has been quite good, so far. Digging the Power Rangers comics. Gotham City Year One had a couple of issues left but it's SO good. It's a Slam Bradley noir set in 60s Gotham. The current Marauders series is really good, though not as good as its predecessor. I lost track of Moon Knight but I read a lot of the current run and loved what I read. A lot of books I didn't know about (partly because I'm just not tuned into DC, as I'm not that into it compared to Marvel), but some interesting ones so I'm very glad to have watched this. Once and Future is definitely one I've been meaning to read since I quite enjoy Gillen's work (Immortal X-Men's been a treat and his Eternals run was probably the best they've ever had). I've also meant to catch the She-Hulk book out of curiosity (also want to read some past runs, I'm quite out-of-date on some things).
    I have really loved the Krakoan era X books, even if some are a little lacklustre. I enjoyed X-Terminators though I probably wouldn't include it in my favourites of the year, and the current Marauders run is rather disappointing after Duggan's (not a big fan on the storyline and I'm very disappointed as I loved the recent X-Factor run, only for that team to get split up), the Excalibur & Knights of X runs felt hampered by either tie-ins or time constraints, but Immortal X-Men and X-Men Red are fantastic (AXE delivered some great stuff). Jed McKay's Moon Knight run has been amazing (even after reading some of the classic runs recently), and I've enjoyed McKay's Strange (I always liked Clea, and I've found it an interesting limited series) even if it isn't quite living up to its potential. I also found the most recent Iron Man run with Christopher Cantwell an interesting exploration of the character, though it unfortunately undersells several ideas. Much as I love Spidey, I'm frequently dissuaded from diving in because of how expansive his history is, it never feels easy to jump in even compared to some other comics (though I did read the Superior and 2099 runs in recent years, which I've enjoyed).

    I think Krakoa has been a mistake. There's some great stories and the events have been awesome but we've lost something along the way. The whole interesting thing about the X-titles is discussion about how marginalised and persecuted populations deal with their role in a larger society. The most interesting thing about the X-titles was the interplay between Xavier's integrationists, Magneto's seperatists, Apocalypse's supremacists and so on. Krakoa basically represents Xavier giving up on his dream of mutant acceptance by the wider society.
    Imagine how interesting it would have been if it was just Magneto running a seperatist island nation that was wildly successful? All the while Xavier is still trying to advocate for pacifist integration while under violent persecution. He would have to deal with high level defections to Magneto's cause. He'd have to consider whether it would be safer to relocate his student teams to Krakoa. And then Magneto start resurrecting long-dead mutants.
    But the resrructions themselves are a problem. The comics treat them as though they're true resurrections, but they're just clones with mental copies downloaded into them. And somehow these clones don't get lost limbs restored? Karma was resurrected with a fully prosthetic leg. Laura's foot-claws were transplanted from her hands, but she's resurrected with them already in her feet. And Wolverine gets the adamantium bonding through the res process.
    We're getting some great stories, but we've lost the heart of the X-men along the way. It's too close to apartheid for my tastes.

    • @vincentbatten4686
      @vincentbatten4686 Год назад +2

      I think the thing I like is that it's a new take. There are plenty of stories already with the political dynamic you specified. This is nation building mutants. They are also colonialist. I mean, that's pretty dirty, but the moral grey area at play when they have to compromise in order to achieve a goal of survival. Almost makes you wonder if that survival is worth it in the long run and at what costs we're willing to pay in order to achieve that. I definitely see a critique of Israel in the books. You even have mutants that choose not to participate in the Krakoan experiment. That metaphor gets a little muddled because the island they move to is just a mutant. All that said, I don't think I understand the apatheid analogy. There is no internalized segregation on Krakoa. At least not to the point I'm at in the story. The story really seems to have a buy in with Magnetos dream, and Charles learning that it's the only way the mutants can survive in this life of Moira. If it makes you feel any better though, Hickman will eventually come back and conclude his story. I think I'll be happy too because while I enjoy all of this, I'd also love to let the story have a clear and definitive ending without all the filler in between.
