I paid $12 Canadian and bought a metal Canon EF bayonet mount ring for 24-105mm from China, which perfectly fits the position of those 4 screws for 55-250mm lens. It works very well and solid with a metal instead of a plastic mount.

I really like how you enjoy the zooms! You should try a Minolta 35-70 f3.5 sometime! Cheap, fixed aperture, awesome image quality, quite compact for a zoom and can be "boosted"!
Hi zeek, I did this mod and my AF works on the M, M2, M50 and 7D. I'am guessing either the the gold connectors are not properly sitted for the gold pins to touche or the electronic cable has been disconnected when doing this mod.
@ZeekEOSZ where is the gap, and how did you fix it? I'm getting F00 most of the time. Perhaps there's a gap in my case too or maybe the lens pins do not play well with my viltrox SB pins 🤔
@@Manciuks1 It depends on your needs really. I think it's a nice general tele lens in addition to the 10-18 and 18-135 for Cropped Cameras. The Stabilisation is really great even when. Zoomed all the way out. 😎🎥🔥🔥
It really is a stunner! It may depend on the copy. I had one a few years back before I got this one again, it was more smooth in the zoom rotation. But yeah, I know what you mean ;)
Wow learned a lot and learned a lot that I need to look up ... like never heard of speed booster before. won't need the adapter as my camera is not full frame, I have a T7i so the lens will fit fine but can a speed booster fit on my camera? Thanks.

Thanks for the video showing how amazing this STM lens is. Question on mounting on your 5D2, you need the t/c 1.4x, so what's the effective focal-length with the t/c? 55-250 x 1.4? Thanks ☺️
@@ZeekEOSZ So that is a good focal length indeed! 77-350mm f/4-5.6 IS! wonder what's the IQ on the 5D mark II? May be you can consider making a video for that? Btw, I got myself a 5D2 thanks to your review (with ML!) Not regretting it at all! Thanks!!
@@minbuichai4512 No problem! The IQ is actually very good considering its ment for Apsc. The Teleconverter has great optics for the price. Aliasing seems non-existent. Great combo oddly haha 😎👍
Zeek, the footage with this lens looks amazing! It looks very sharp! Your grading is exceptional as always! What would you say is the sharpest lens for a crop sensor camera with a speedbooster? (Ex. Canon M50)
It really is a great lens! If you're planning to use it on full-frame, you can use a cheap 1.4x teleconverter and you can then take photos and shoot raw video with the 1080 modes or high-resolution modes. Crazy good!
Thanks for the great video and idea! Would you recommend the modded 55-250 for an m6ii with speedbooster, or a 70-200 f4 with speedbooster? I know there is a difference in price and size, but do you think it's worth it for video work? Thanks so much!
I would even consider the Canon EF-m 55-200 which I have coming in soon, apperently it's almost as good as the 70-300 L EF lens. The 70-200 F4 IS is a good lens for sure, albeit a little bulky. But it would work fine with the Speedbooster. IS is crucial with tele lenses.
I wonder why don't af work? It sounds very odd. I converted kit lens and mounted it on 25 year old Canon film slr and af worked. Did something happened with connector when you was modding it? That it doesn't works though speed booster can be a firmware issue, but still it should have worked on Canon 6d. Did you tried it on your R6?
@@ZeekEOSZ It could be too low f-stop issue as well. I overlooked that. Most Canon older dslrs are loosing af on f-stop lower then 5.6 or f8 at best. Thats why those telephoto converters works best with f2.8 lenses. :) Anyway that shouldn't be a problem on R6/R5 i think since they have that 600/800 f11 lenses now that works with af.
I am little intrigued with your 55-250 lens on Canon m50/850D/SL3 with that cropped 4k and 2x converter. With my calculations that should be good for eq. of 1300 mm. And if you crop that 2x in post to 1080p... Now that sounds 😜 It probably is going to look like crap, but that lens is sharp. So maybe 🤔

Hey Zeek, great video. I have a question regarding the mod with the 5D ii, does the vignette appear on all focal lengths? Or does it disappear when zooming in? Thank you!!
All focal lengths. The 1.4x teleconverter fixes this. With the 5D2 I use Magic Lantern with 2.8K RAW mode which has a 2x crop, so it works for that without a teleconverter.
Quick question: Are the screws that hold the lens mount on the back of the lens Phillips head screws? or are they JIS (Japan Industrial Standard) screws?
Hey man, love your videos, they've been highly illustrative. What are your thoughts on the M50 + Speedbooster + 55-250 EFS mod as a sports shooter, especially indoors or in low light cf the "gold standard" FF + 70-200 L?
What a pity about the AF not working. I ordered the mod part, but I will try the ordinary commlite adapter for my m50 before modding. I really like AF. I saw a video that the guy used a hacksaw to cut off the protrusion. Do you know about that and if it is the same? I don't like the idea of destroying an original part beyond the point of no return. Great video. Keep them coming, Nate. That hippo in your footage looks familiar like someone I went to school with.
Hi Zeek. Been wanting to get a budget zoom lens and will definitely consider this. Thanks for this. 👍🏼 Is there a mod available without the autofocus chip? If there is, will that still works?
The AF chip is from the lens not the Adapter. The Adapter is metal, better than the original plastic one. I used to have the 70-200 L F/4, apart from the variable aputure, I preferred the 55-250 for video because of the IS and the image quality is very good for the Price. You'll love it.
Oh got that. Thanks for the clarification. I just didn't notice it. I recently ordered an adapter for M42 and I thought it also has the variant of w/ and w/o AF chip. And hey, I also bought the Helios 44-2 after watching your video. 😁 Definitely the EFS 55 - 250 wil be the next on my list. 👍🏼
@@jerreyess Congrats! Can't go wrong with any of these for the price. Wierd, but the Helios feels like a Nostalgic lens. It's amazing for sure, g'luck! 😎🤘🎬🔥
I'm confused why you'd want to put a long zoom on a teleconverter, doesn't that defeat the purpose of the long zoom? It's nice to know you can but I'm not sure what the purpose would be. I think you ultimately end up with a shorter focal length as the 55-200 EF-M lens but also because of the teleconverter worse results. As a side note though, have you tried a EF 24 mm pancake lens with a speedbooster? That would be about the same focal length of 17mm and a maximum aperture of f/2. That might be interesting.
This aps-c lens will vignette on full frame unless used with a telleconverter. It's pretty much just a fun experiment with very good results. I haven't used the 24mm pancake, though I have used the 24-70 L which works wonders with the speedbooster.
Hi Zeek, after changing over to the metal plate and just attaching it to your crop sensor camera without a speedbooster or teleconverter or anything, does the autofocus still work?
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks Zeek. For photos on M6 MKII with speedbooster attached, would you get vignetting, if so at all focal lengths or does it go away when you zoom in a bit? Also, I assume digital lense corrections for distortion and vignetting can't be used with the speedbooster or a teleconverter attached? If there is, perhaps it might be possible to custom fix in photoshop or something but that would probably be a lot of work?
@@cameronradel5711 Yes you would get vignette at all focal lengths. You could use a 1.4x EF Teleconverter. I use Kenko EF 1.4x works great even with Full Frame.
Another informative video, thank you! Odd that auto focus doesn’t work. Any ideas as to why? With the 18-135mm lens, one could pop the extrusion out. I’m assuming that method isn’t possible for this lens?
I’m not looking to put the lens on a full frame. I have an EF teleconverter (attach to M50 with EF > EF-M adapter) and would love to see how the 2x works with the 55-250 lens.
Not sure why. Happens to Viltrox and Metabones as well as 5D2. No biggy, as I mostly shoot manual, but I'll see if it can be fixed. Yes the back cannot be pulled out with this, the 18-55 & 10-18.
@@ZeekEOSZ I switched the 18-135 (metal) & 55-250 (plastic) backing mounts. This allowed the 55-250 to have the plastic backing so I could pop out the extrusion. The problem, as you mentioned, was I lost auto focus (the camera automatically switched to manual focus (MF)) and I couldn't focus when fully extended to 250, although I was using the 2x teleconverter, but I didn't record the maximum focal depth when focus was achieved.
@@12Jerbs Thanks for reporting. Yeah well guess its better than nothing. The lens works magic on the 5D2 with the 1.4x Teleconverter, crisp as chips + IS 🎬🔥
Shooting RAW gives you more flexibility in post. Raw is like Raw Stills, and SL2 Video is like Jpeg. But you can shoot fine with both. Good lighting and lenses will help.
I can recommend sigma/tamron 17-50 F2.8 os/vc, Canon 18-135m, 50 STM, Canon 17-40 L, Sigma 18-35 F1.8, Tamron 35 F1.8 VC ML is not supported with SL2, you can find supported cameras on their website.
Hey thanks for these great videos! I have watched both your 55-250mm and 10-18mm Canon EF-S lens hacks... I have two quick questions regarding vignetting, as I have purchased both these lenses with the intention to mod them exactly the way you did. I am trying to determine if I will get vignetting on my Fuji X-T200 with my Viltrox EF-FX2 speedbooster. I understand that you're a Canon user, but please bear with me... my Fuji has an APS-C sensor which is pretty much same size of your M50... and the Viltrox speedbooster should be pretty similar to the adaptor you have used... so I guess my questions are kinda legit, but ubviously I am asking you to speculate on this, and I will get your answers with a pinch of salt. All I'm after is your opinion. So, my questions are: - In this video you mentioned the need of a teleconverter for the 55-250mm lens to avoid the vignette, do you think that I would need a teleconverter too for my setup "Fuji X-T200 + Viltrox EF-FX2 SpeedBooster + Canon 55-250mm hacked"? - Do you think I will also get vignette with "Fuji + Viltrox speedbooster + Canon 10/18mm"? Thank you so much in advance and keep up the great work!
With the Canon M50, when you enable Digital IS it crops in a bit, so it's fine. With the Fuji XT200 & Speedbooster, photo will vignette on the 55-250, the 10-18 might be fine if zoomed. For video the 10-18 will work if zoomed out to say 14mm or above. The 55-250 might need the Teleconverter for video.
Don’t understand... surely the issue was communication with the lens? I have a canon M6II and was hoping this might work with my viltrox speed booster? Whilst still retaining AF.
Zeek this Camera is intriguing, I shoot Weddings, I am still not following how much record time I will get per take ? I’m assuming I would have to use this for B Roll only and not for an angle for a ceremony ? Your thoughts would be helpful, awesome content Subbed 🎉

Sorry for the maybe stupid question but what about the non stm version of this lens? Because the adapter says always stm but is there any difference besides the quieter sound? The hole inside the adapter for the small knub is not needed in the non stm version but are there any other differences which would make it not to work?
Hi Zeek loved the video! Can you do a video covering ml photography features sometime. I was amazed to see ml offers some , though it wasn't mentioned which of them on there website.
Yeah sure, I can cover this some time, but both video and photo overlays will be the same, so whatever overlays are available for video, this can apply for photos, such as zebras, false colour and magic zoom.
my question is: I'm filming tiktoks and I need at least 15 seconds - 60 seconds of recording. which mode should I shoot in that is the most stable zeek? 2.5k or 2.8k raw? 1080 can pretty much film forever but I definitely wanna try and get the most possible especially with the crop. if I'm filming myself I need a buffer of 20 seconds on each end because I have to walk to the camera, so is there a recommendation for upto 3 mins of filming? or just get my sister to film also here's a tip for you! I was able to find adapters for my 24mm pancake lens on eBay!! so it can be speed boosted in regular mode its vignetting but on a speed booster x2.96 x .71 = 50.43mm so like 51mm f2 I'm assuming in a pancake size, pretty cool, but maybe the stabilization is better with the 55-250mm lens, so many possibilities this is so fantastic!
I shot these all 2.5K 16:9. If you want continuous, in the 3rd ML Tab, enable "16:9" where it says aspect ratio below raw video, that will enable continuous. Also, enable 10 bit. Wide lenses are your best bet, also with IS. The 10-18 is nice.
@@ZeekEOSZ okay so 2.5k 16:9 will give you continuous at least 4+ mins? looks like I need to get a bigger memory card :D and yes you're right the IS helps I'm pretty excited I don't even need to buy new lenses did you have a hard time with unscrewing them? because its not coming out XD
@@LouisLuzuka If you enable 16:9 in 2.5K Mode, under aspect ratio, It will set you a resolution that will allow continuous raw, for example, 2.1K. If you want higher, disable the 16:9 aspect ratio, then increase the resolution to say 2.3k, etc. Never force those screws otherwise they'll lose their shape. Make sure you have the correct screwdriver, you need at least a ph (phillips) 000
@@ZeekEOSZ oh okay so just play around with it until I get my desired length, and also... You can cut off the back end yes! If it ever mucks up you can always order a new original back mount ;) I love gimbals, but oddly I don;t find myself using it often. I like IS Lenses.
I know this is a rather late comment, but I mounted my 55-250mm on a FF camera (R6m2) without a speedbooster, just the normal EF to RF adapter. There's no vinyette, but the photos are just 9 megapixels. How many megapixels did you get for stills with the mod? Meanwhile I'm waiting for my eTone mount plate...
Only 9 megapixels? Why do you need more? Some expensive Sony cameras have only 12 and are very expensive! For example, I bought only those Canon cameras where you could set CRAW or MRAW in the menu to reduce the number of megapixels... And in the RAW image processing program there were still enough megapixels to crop unnecessary details ! Unfortunately, my Canon 6D mark 2 camera cannot use crop lenses via an adapter.. I don't need 26 megapixels, or 15, or 10..... I'm only talking about photo mode. I'm not interested in the video. ( Google translator )
Does EFS and speed booster on M Body really brighten by one stop? With EF and speedbooster I can see why (as all glass is used onto an APSC sensor). But with an APSC EFS lens? Don't understand how.
I think worth mentioning that the screws are (tiny) JIS type and not Philips. A JIS screwdriver would be needed to do the job properly. Another $20 or more for the screwdriver set if you do not own one.

Just get a 70-300 IS USM full frame lens instead... (not the older 75-300 IS tho, except its super cheap!...) On a R body the 1,4 extender allows autofocus with adapted EF glass definately (but slower on R cameras at least), i encountered just some stabilizer/IBIS issues on specific (mostly 3rd party) lenses
The 18-135 Mod doesn't cost a thing. Zoom it out and take the mount off and it becomes EF. On the other hand the 18-55/10-18/55-250 need special EF Mount Mods off eBay. These are honestly all great lenses, depends on you needs or prefered focal range.
@@PVMMAC with the 18-135 Nano USM, you don't need to buy an EF Mount Plate. With that lens you can just zoom it out to 135mm and then pull the back mount piece off and it will then have an EF Mount fit. ruclips.net/video/HTpTiuhpiyk/видео.html
Yeah but not with this garbage lens, even the full frame Canon 75-300 IS USM was better than any of the 55-250 APS-C lenses, i paid once like 13 years ago 300€ 2nd hand and sold it a year ago for also 300€ Also, the most useful and cost effective way on RF mount is just using affordable, higher quality EF glass 2nd hand. For example i got a good deal on a Canon EF 100-400 II, its just slightly heavier and longer than a RF 100-500, but: bigger aperture and A LOT CHEAPER. I tested the 100-500 with and without 2x TC (beside a RF 800 F11!) and even found out the RF 800 is the better, just much more cost effective way of having supertele range, also if its 800mm fixed with even fixed F11. My wildlife lenses are mainly the 100-400 II (travel, handheld video/photo and lowlight, basic telezoom), the RF 800 F11 (hiking, handheld video/photo) and a sigma 150-600C (for more stationary/tripod work), all together costed (2nd hand...) less than a new RF 100-500L with each having different advantages over the RF lens. I tried once a speedbooster on the EOS R7 as i switched from Full Frame back to the R7/APS-C since i really wanted to make especially the 16-35 full frame lens usable on APS-C (it didnt work... IBIS was confused, autofocus sucked hard, disorted image), I have also a (sigma) 1,4x teleconverter with the Sigma 150-600C and it was sometimes needed on FF, but the sharpness/IQ loss is just obvious on 32MP APS-C, the teleconverter was only usable on full frame. There is in my opinion only one really good option: Full frame camera? FULL FRAME LENSES! APS-C Camera? APS-C LENSES!, etc... its that easy! In over 10 years of photography i barely had a profit by using something like teleconverters or speedboosters, the only "optional" in between glass which ever made sense to me were basic filters like NDs, polarizers or in the case of astrophotography - a field flattener/coma corrector for telescopes (which are mostly made for specific telescopes/models!) At all... combining ZOOM LENSES (Zoom!) with any focal lenght reducer or increasing element is something unusual and NOT MEANT TO BE... they are mainly designed for fast prime lenses! There is a reason why some lenses have an intentional obstruction on the mount to make speedboosters or teleconverters unusable.
ATTENTION ! I just received a metal ring for the Canon 55-250 STM and immediately installed it. I started trying it on a Canon 6D Mark 2. On the third shot I heard that the mirror hit and jammed in the middle. The "ERROR" light came on. I instantly understood the reason and immediately disconnected the lens. Then he took a powerful magnifying lens and examined the mirror under the light of a lamp. Fortunately. , there were no scratches. I tried it on normal lenses and everything works as expected! I IMMEDIATELY removed this metal ring, put the original one in its place and I DON’T WANT to experiment anymore! If you need to use a crop-sensor lens, then you need to use Tokina, Sigma and Tamron crop lenses, because they have a Canon mount for FF cameras! Canon lenses must be original. As I did with Sigma 50-200 - it works. Canon crop lenses, if no one wants problems, can be used with the EF/EF-S teleconverter. I also noticed that the Canon 55-250 lens on the FF gives a circle at all focal lengths from 55 mm to 250 mm. , and the Sigma 50-200 crop lens gives a full image from 75 mm! I also tried the Sigma 50-150/2.8 crop lens and it gave remarkable sharpness after a small crop and the circle was only at the initial wide angle. Then it's ok. Some crop lenses, as I read, even cover the FF sensor 100%! Crop lenses Sigma, Tamron, Tokina cover a larger sensor area than crop lenses Canon, so when cropping in camera and on a computer you can get an additional wide angle I also noticed that the original Canon ring has a plate type that goes inside the lens by about 1 inch. The Chinese ring is smooth. These are the conclusions about the 55-250 ring. Conclusion: I STRICTLY DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR FF DSLR cameras !
Image quality is awesome. Your color grading is implacable. Pure joy to watch!
Thanks a lot, really appreciate it! :)

Some have reported it works. I believe it's fine on the Metabones, but not viltrox speedbooster. I haven't tried it on the R6 but I will.
So maybe 🤔
@@oldtechnology Yeah it would work fine for sure, even with the Teleconverter. Nice lens. Now I need to try the old Canon 70-300 IS.

Yes JIS as they are flat lines. My Philips head fits as well. If the screws are too tight, this can cause an issue.
Hey man, love your videos, they've been highly illustrative. What are your thoughts on the M50 + Speedbooster + 55-250 EFS mod as a sports shooter, especially indoors or in low light cf the "gold standard" FF + 70-200 L?
I thought the same thing, but since the adapter doesn't allow AF to be used, it doesn't seem like a good idea for sports photography
I would like to see with a metal mount after modification, like canon efs10-18mm.
What camera and lens did you film yourself with?

Outros usuários relataram que o foco automático funciona com esta lente. Portanto, deve estar bem com o adaptador normal.
I don't like the hacksaw idea. Others have reported AF works with this adapter and lens so double check the Adapter is sitting properly.

Yes it does. Other users have confirmed this too in the comments below.

The problem, as you mentioned, was I lost auto focus (the camera automatically switched to manual focus (MF)) and I couldn't focus when fully extended to 250, although I was using the 2x teleconverter, but I didn't record the maximum focal depth when focus was achieved.

would u say its possible to shoot good shots and videos with canon sl2 the same compared to eos m? Like movies and shooting raw?
Shooting RAW gives you more flexibility in post. Raw is like Raw Stills, and SL2 Video is like Jpeg. But you can shoot fine with both. Good lighting and lenses will help.
do you have any recommendations for sl2 lens and does magic laturn works only to eos m models or does it work well with sl2?

So, my questions are:
- In this video you mentioned the need of a teleconverter for the 55-250mm lens to avoid the vignette, do you think that I would need a teleconverter too for my setup "Fuji X-T200 + Viltrox EF-FX2 SpeedBooster + Canon 55-250mm hacked"?
- Do you think I will also get vignette with "Fuji + Viltrox speedbooster + Canon 10/18mm"?
Thank you so much in advance and keep up the great work!
With the Canon M50, when you enable Digital IS it crops in a bit, so it's fine.
With the Fuji XT200 & Speedbooster, photo will vignette on the 55-250, the 10-18 might be fine if zoomed.
For video the 10-18 will work if zoomed out to say 14mm or above. The 55-250 might need the Teleconverter for video.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thank you so much!
@@ZeekEOSZhi, does this also apply when taking photos, not just videos?

No, not with these contrast based AF Cams.

I have an M6II. I haven't tested it on it yet. But so far the AF hasn't worked on M, M50 & 5D2. When I get home Ill check again, also with the M6II.

also here's a tip for you! I was able to find adapters for my 24mm pancake lens on eBay!! so it can be speed boosted
in regular mode its vignetting but on a speed booster x2.96 x .71 = 50.43mm so like 51mm f2 I'm assuming in a pancake size, pretty cool, but maybe the stabilization is better with the 55-250mm lens, so many possibilities this is so fantastic!

It'd be very cost-effective to use on RF bodies considering the cost of RF lenses.
Yeah but not with this garbage lens, even the full frame Canon 75-300 IS USM was better than any of the 55-250 APS-C lenses, i paid once like 13 years ago 300€ 2nd hand and sold it a year ago for also 300€
Also, the most useful and cost effective way on RF mount is just using affordable, higher quality EF glass 2nd hand.
IBIS was confused, autofocus sucked hard, disorted image),
I have also a (sigma) 1,4x teleconverter with the Sigma 150-600C and it was sometimes needed on FF, but the sharpness/IQ loss is just obvious on 32MP APS-C, the teleconverter was only usable on full frame.
There is in my opinion only one really good option: Full frame camera? FULL FRAME LENSES! APS-C Camera? APS-C LENSES!, etc... its that easy! In over 10 years of photography i barely had a profit by using something like teleconverters or speedboosters, the only "optional" in between glass which ever made sense to me were basic filters like NDs, polarizers or in the case of astrophotography - a field flattener/coma corrector for telescopes (which are mostly made for specific telescopes/models!)
At all... combining ZOOM LENSES (Zoom!) with any focal lenght reducer or increasing element is something unusual and NOT MEANT TO BE... they are mainly designed for fast prime lenses! There is a reason why some lenses have an intentional obstruction on the mount to make speedboosters or teleconverters unusable.
sir upload CANON200d mark 2 videos 🙏🙏🙏
How in the hell a APS-C lens, in a APS-C camera with a speedbooster, don't cause a vignette?!
Viltrox EF-M1 + Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 + Micro Four Thirds = Canon EF-S 110-500mm f/4-5.6 + autofocus + stabilization.
👍18:9 aspect ratio
The best! :)
hey zeek i recently got a eos mans i can’t seem to figure out how to skip frames on playback.
On playback, in the centre of the screen, click set button on exact and change to all.
@@ZeekEOSZ thanks
Handheld ?? WOWW
All of it yes! Great Stabilisation from this lens.
Great with speedbooster when it works. Most if the time I get F00 However, vinyetting is there, even if if works
Crop lenses Sigma, Tamron, Tokina cover a larger sensor area than crop lenses Canon, so when cropping in camera and on a computer you can get an additional wide angle
I also noticed that the original Canon ring has a plate type that goes inside the lens by about 1 inch. The Chinese ring is smooth. These are the conclusions about the 55-250 ring.
Conclusion: I STRICTLY DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR FF DSLR cameras !
