Bent Neck Lady is a representation of Nell's creeping depression. That's why when Life is good with Arthur, she "goes away". She see's her when she see's her brother relapses after she buys him drugs, she sees it at one of the worst moments in her life when Arthur has an aneurysm. She sees it at the motel after none of her siblings picked up her calls. When her mother left her in the middle of the night after she needed her. This show loves to represent grief, mental health, and trauma as the real ghosts and Nell's is so well done to show how su*c*de can feel like a looming inevitability for someone with this horrible disease.

What makes this show so great is that it purposefully ties in real human elements & emotions into a story about ghosts - it shows that people are "haunted" by very secular things such as grief, anger, sadness, addiction, depression, etc, as well as the paranormal. In this universe, the ghosts are very much real but they also serve as a metaphor for all those things the family goes through. That's the whole point of the story

arthur really died of aneurysm guys, the bent-neck lady comeback in that moment is just to show how his influence in her life helped her avoid the ghosts of her past, but from the moment hes gone, she comes back.
So, this was Victoria’s first MAJOR acting role….EVER. There are so many reasons that you will understand after the end of the series why she is a true, true icon.
She is a really really good actress. She needs main role in major films.
-time isn’t linear on this show; so it’s a repeating cycle that nell sees when she foresees her own death. the house preyed upon her the most because she was the most vulnerable. this whole family was tormented as soon as they stepped foot in that house.
- it’s sad to see that after arthur’s death none of the siblings were there for her afterwards. theo literally mentioned her not being well, but none of them really checked up on her. she shouldn’t have been in that house by herself regardless if they’ve been speaking to each other or not.
I mean, theo tried to talk to her and help her but after nell violated her biggest boundary I honestly can’t blame her for feeling like she needed space. nell never tried to call her, only steve and shirley which is likely because of their fight.

The idea that Nell was haunted her entire life by her death was so tragic. Credit to Victoria Pedretti, because you truly feel how broken that character becomes this episode.
In the episode 1 when Steve hanging out with Luke in the tree house, Steve looked at one of Luke's drawing of someone (a girl) wearing pink dress with her mouth opened (like screaming), and said "Luke, where do you get these ideas for these drawings?". And Luke replied with "I don't know" gesture. It turns out Luke may have been looking into the future. That drawing is actually adult Nell. It's a twin thing.

Victoria who plays Nell in this show was fantastic in this episode, and also the ending on who the Bent-Neck Lady is was shocking.
As human beings were built to feel emotions. We watch comedies to laugh, we watch thrillers to feel thrilled and be on the edge of our seats, we watch action to get excited, we watch dramas to cry, we watch horror to feel frightened.
This show is such a well written story with well crafted characters. The juxtaposition between the horror elements and mental illness and maybe health issues (with the sprinkling of black mould here and there). They leave it open for the viewers to lean whichever way they want to.

That therapist was actually doing the right thing. This is a show with ghosts and poltergeists, but in real life the way you cure (or at least manage) people's fears like that is by confronting them. The only mistake there was that he advised HER to do it instead of making sure she is supervised by either him or someone else as she goes to the house. Then she'd have to slowly go into that house, as much as she can handle at a time, so that she can confront that fear slowly break free from it.
Just wanted to mention this so the therapist doesn't seem like a "bad guy" in the show.
Right. Same when they said Liv and Hugh were shitty parents for sleeping with their child until she fell asleep, after she said she saw something that's impossible in the real world. Horror movies set in reality rarely work, if it's a reality where ghosts and demons are perfectly normal and everyone in the world know it. It's implied that no such things exist and now these characters from "our reality" is suddenly thrust into a reality where it IS real. Should parents in their situation panic and have told their small child "Oh no. A real monster was in your room. It could kill you! Run as quick as you can if anything like that happens again to save yourself and come find us". Like, what?
I find Blake’s reaction so interesting. I’ve watched a ton of reactions to this show and even the most scared/traumatized people are able to empathize with the characters. So it’s interesting to see him be so cold 😂😂😂
Wild how he said they are bad parents and gaslighting the kids. Like in real life 99.99999% of the time when a kid says they see something it’s not an actual ghost. Idk what he was expecting them to do pretend to be scared and traumatize the kid when in real life it’s not an actual ghost
You know a show is good, when a single scene has you volleying back and forth between covering your face out of fear and crying over Nell dancing with her dead husband. I mean, that’s why I keep watching 🤷🏻♀️
One of the best twist endings ever! The next episode is an absolute technical masterpiece. Corey missed the ghost lurking under the piano in the scene where the mom was fussing at Nellie for writing on the wall.

I’m surprised no one said this yet but Nell’s therapist is played by the actor from the 1960s movie of Haunting of Hill House. If you like classic films, it’s worth a watch. He’s also an actor on Twin Peaks. His cameo is a nice easter egg for fans of the 60s movie. ☺️
The title of the 1963 film is The Haunting. - no reference to Hill House in the title. The actor’s name is Russ Tamblyn and his character name is Luke.

The cinematography is mind-blowing and the acting is top-notch. Mike Flanagan is a world class story teller and I try to get everyone I know to watch this, preferably with me.
The next episode is the entire reason I started watching the series. I randomly caught a behind the scenes video about its making in particular and I knew I had to see it in context. I swear it should have won all the awards.

My answer for why I like this is plain and simple, I like content that makes me cry. Bonus points if it’s horror that makes me cry. All of Mike’s works have made me cry at one point for one reason or another, and usually it’s been enough to get me to full on sob. It’s a coping mechanism I use to help regulate my feelings and cry in a controlled environment with controlled triggers.

FUN FACTS:
The Haunting of Hill House is based on a novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson, and the eldest sister was named after her.
Mike Flanagan did a fantastic job of reimagining the narrative. In the book, Dr. John Montague hosts a group of strangers to stay in the haunted mansion, and Luke is the heir of the place. Flanagan made these strangers family and injected them with loss, fear, and love. All the main characters in the book are here, with Nell, Theo, Luke, Dr. Montague in a lesser role than in the book, and the Dudleys. The additions are the parents, Steven, Shirley, and Nell’s husband.
And here, Dr John Montague is the name of the bad therapist and is played by the same actor who played Luke in the 1963 original The Haunting.
This far we just know Abigail as Abigail, her last name has never been mentioned.
As for the therapist, he did his job with a logical mind in a world that exists in ours. There are those that believes in ghost & those that dont & a "normal" therapist would probably say similar. :)

To why someone might enjoy this show, these heavy feelings/moments are normal days for some of us. It's gratifying to experience them through great writing, acting, and a creative lens that is there to tell a story start to finish.

I can't watch this episode without crying, poor sweet Nellie just wanted her family to be together and happy. Blake, you guys are watching the Saw movies which are absolutely disgusting, Hill House is so good on so many levels. Not really scary, but very emotional.
The lore behind Hill has some linear time effects on the family since they're sensitive, I think the house feeds on the fear and mental health. Imagine being haunted by your own death your whole life!

i’m also a baby about horror but i’m very fond of this show, enough to rewatch it several times over, because i think that exploring the characters’ personal and familial journeys in a supernatural context was extremely well done. it definitely sticks the landing, even if blake ends up not liking the show i hope he appreciates what it’s about in the end.
This is one of my favorite series, ever. I've rewatched it many time and I love it because not only does it tackle the horror elements perfectly, but the overall story is so beautiful to me, about family, love and loss.
This reveal is by far one of the most bone-chilling moments of the show.
We need Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and Fall of the House of Usher after this.
This was my favorite show for years! It's great because the characters are developed and deep, the plot is intricate, and the direction is masterful. And yes, the horror is top-notch. It's so well done, including the ghosts hidden in the background of many shots. It's just so well crafted and designed. It also examines trauma as ghosts and how trauma impacts and wears people down differently. That's why I love this show.
I've watched this episode about a dozen times now and I never made the connection until now that, yes, they shared the withdrawal symptoms, but also that Nellie stopped taking her meds at the same time that Luke went into rehab and actually stayed clean. It's a Twin Thing indeed, ugh.
Every character was haunted by something. I like to think that Nellie was haunted by her own death. So, as a kid, she give the name of her fear of Bent-Neck Lady - sorry for the english. Brazilian here. Awesome channel!
This is such an engrossing tale full of drama, horror, mystery and emotion. Why wouldn’t you love it? The performances are incredible. The atmosphere and the production design is immaculate. And, the directing is some of the best I’ve ever seen. This story along with the companion series The Haunting of Bly Manor are some of the best in this genre. It’s also so well written and multi layered it’s quite brilliant. The next episode pay attention to the direction. You won’t be sorry.

The whole series is a masterpiece. I wish I could go back in time and watch it for the first time again. The storytelling, the characters, the emotions, the drama, the terror - all perfectly wrapped up in a genius script and twists and turns. It’s beautiful.
Well for me, I like this show because it's the probably the most realistic towards a grieving family, each member deals with tragedy in their own way, and some may not be healthy but people are imperfect. And my favorite episode is next, is so top tier.
I loved this show for the horror- paranormal and the horror of our reality as humans. Loss, grief, anger, addiction- all things in our real world right now that could affect any one of us. The story telling- the ghosts are just the cherry on top. The blurred lines between paranormal and mental illness… its like a beautiful intertwined dance

Always so excited for these. And I have to say, as someone who struggles with depression and the thoughts of end gaming yourself, this and Luke’s episodes are excellent representations of how inevitable it feels, like it’s always haunting you and will always come to be. Especially when trying to explain it to someone who doesn’t have that same affliction.
A line that has always stuck with me from Stephen King's novel "It" was that a haunt can also be defined as a feeding place for animals, and all the people in her illusion at the climax of the episode looked absolutely predatory, smiling at her with hungry eyes.
This show is SOOOOOO GOOD, every episode is good, but Episode 6 is a masterpiece.
It's literally early as hellll in the morning right now but I'm already too hyped to watch this reaction because this episode is truly one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen.

oh wow. Never made that connection. She needed to be on drugs to survive, but him being on drugs was killing him. Almost like they were doomed from the start, or it was in their fate to end up the way they do.
Sure, it makes it harder for him to get clean but to say that he's an addict because she has to take meds is just silly. Itd be like saying she has to take meds because he's an addict and sees shit thats not there making her think shes hallucinating.

The first time I saw this I was most scared of the bent neck lady. Every other watch leaves me heartbroken from episode 1 knowing whats coming from this episode. Such a great show and excited for you to continue as all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place so you can see the big picture.❤
I’m SO excited for EPISODE SIX- it will finally, finally bring the story forward. It is also one of the best shot episodes of television in general.

The mirror appears in pretty much every single thing Flanagan has made. He even used the lower part of the frame for the bed frame where Carla Gugino's character (she plays the mom in Hill House) is tied to in Gerald's Game.

So, I'll admit this is my favorite show. Just to gush a little:
One of the things I learned in my Gothic Literature class was the difference between Horror and Terror. Horror is often visceral, gory, visually frightening. Terror is dread, that chill in your spine, when you know something is wrong but you don't know what. We have a ton of horror out there, but I would argue we don't often get really good terror. This show delivers the terror in spades, while also giving us a fascinating and heartbreaking family drama at the heart of it. The fluid shift through the past and the present is also done exceptionally well. That's my position, at least.
Also, to echo many others: Gear up for Episode 6. It's my favorite episode from the series. As far as I'm concerned, it's a masterclass in cinematography AND acting.

I like this show because this episode, and many of the ideas in the rest of the series, are true horror. It shows the horror in real life through fantasy, as many of the best stories (and some would argue all) do. Nell has depression, and if you understand that, you understand the bent neck lady.

Blake, it’s the reveal, young Nell saw her future, she didn’t know what she would look like. All the girls have a power. The only one that knew was Theo, because the mom took her. The house, isn’t just a house.
I like to think of it this way. It's less about the person being haunted by themselves their whole lives and more like, well, you know how a person's life is supposed to flash before their eyes when they die? This is that, but all you can remember are the horribly tragic moments that made you feel hopeless, vulnerable, alone, and are what eventually became the moments that led to this tragic conclusion.
Also, the one thing I love about this show is that the ghosts are definitely both real and figurative. It's like Steve says in the beginning, a ghost can be a lot of things. This show explores more than just physical ghosts but ghosts of the past, of brokenness, mental health, addiction, getting too close to people and the fear of opening up, relationships, anything that can haunt a person in life really and it's SO SMART.
Last thing, idk if this will provide any answers for Blake or not, but I once read a really good paper on why people enjoy the horror genre, and it found that the majority of people fall into 3 categories. You have the people who love to FEEL scared. They are seeking the adrenaline thrill with none of the physical risks. #2 they like the gore factor or the shock factor. They want to experience something that is not normally seen in life and probably shouldn't be seen. #3 and this is me personally, some people view terrifying media, or on a broader spectrum the unknown in general, as more of a puzzle to be solved. They enjoy it in a more analytical sense. This would include trying to figure out who the killer is by the end of the movie, trying to predict the plot, or they're more invested in the story than the actual scary parts because there's an understanding that this was at least created with specific intention just like any other film and people want to get to the bottom of the why.
Anyway, this show definitely falls into the #3 category I think because while there are several jump scares and a lot of tension, there's really not a lot of heavy action, shock factor, and it honestly runs more like a gothic drama than straight horror as it focuses heavily on character dynamics and metaphor.

I loved this show because going into it you think it's just some ghost story, but the stories of each of the kids is heartbreaking and gut wrenching at times. I also like how we're getting the story of each kid as we get flashbacks of their childhoods as well as where they are as adults now and how their time at Hill house drastically changed their lives rather they want to admit it or not.
Please stick around for the next episode, Blake. Cinema magic is about to happen.... tv making perfection! The hard and dedicated work of the cast and crew shines through in the next episode and I think you won't want to miss it. I'm being 100% honest when I say that whole college courses could be created from analyzing the many deliberate, intricate elements of the next episode. It is chefs kiss level tv!

I have gifts similar to Theo’s, and I’m not speaking lightly when I say I’ve started to just KNOW when you guys are either watching and or uploading. I feel a spike in energy, and once I recognize it I keep a closer eye on your channel. Then lo and behold…a new upload. I’m starting to think it’s Blake’s energy I pick up on so strongly. It just moves so freely and openly. Plus extreme emotions tend to heighten energy, and in Blake’s case that would be fear 😂

That's what I thought 😂. I've seen other groups of reactors and sometimes if one of them don't like something they just watch without that person. I really tried with him but it's really annoying, especially that reaction in the end, if you don't like something just don't watch, but from episode 1 you probably know if it's for you, and you don't have to SCREAM and ask us something that's simple, the show is a masterpiece, full stop.

arthur died of an aneurysm. I don’t think the show means for that to be ambiguous outside of nell’s perspective. nell is the bent neck lady and if you notice she often appeared to herself in times of stress or turmoil which makes sense as to why she showed up in that moment.
Episode 6 is why I Love this show. Imagine living your entire life being haunted by death.
Nelly saw her life flash before her eyes when she died. Unfortunately she was able to see herself. The bent neck lady was there at some of the most significant/lowest times of her life.
