  • A lot has been said about Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition full Ray Traced Global Illumination (RTGI) system. Does it live up to the hype? I've done a side by side comparison of the introduction and first main area of the game Volga to see the RTGI techniques at work.

    I think the problem with this and other RT games, is that RT can change the entire atmosphere. Often using ray tracing the scenes become considerably brighter. ...... The only way to revert back to the original atmosphere would be to rework the game. Either by reducing the light source, by making a smaller window or opening where light comes in. Or reworking the colours and constrasts of objects.
    That however would be a massive undertaking. Instead devs throw RT in and say "That's it".
    Whereas the orignal setting is what they developed for. They worked their artistry to make that.
    Overall while ray-tracing can be spectacular, it can also detract from the original work. That is unless the devs were prepared to remake the game around ray tracing.
    Many thanks for this video though, as it covered everything I was thinking about; original RT vs Enhanced Edition.

      Some people just want it to look as realistic as possible, this game being more bright in enhanced version and it changing the atmosphere doesn't change the fact that it just looks much closer to what it would look in real life. I personally absolutely love the enhanced edition as it is without a doubt very realistic looking.

    • @thatfirstone
      @thatfirstone 19 дней назад

      @@zedus4042 No, it doesn't look more realistic. That's marketing BS. You cannot partially ray trace a scene (which is what is being done here), and then claim realism. You will only have an aesthetic change. You won't have realism.

      @@thatfirstone "partially ray trace"? Exodus Enhanced edition is fully ray traced when it comes to lighting and so far, the only game ever to feature an infinite bouncing light rays. In comparison to non enhanced version, it just factually looks much closer to how light works in real life. + you don't need to know how this stuff works, anyone with functional eyes can tell that it clearly looks more realistic.

    One must argue that enhanced edition, although looks good like just from a visual perspective, it actually ruins a lot of the artistic and moody lighting that is built upon the last two metro games, so the normal edition's ray tracing option is the more immersive option to go for if you aren't looking for eye candy since the enhanced edition's visuals completely lose that gritty metro style - tldr; raytracing is not good for atmospheric games

      Ray tracing IS good for atmospheric games if the game is designed with RT in mind from the start. Traditional rasterized lighting looks fake and has a lot of errors if you know what to look for. Most of those errors are gone with good RT implementation. I happen to think the RT in the EE is pretty good and prefer it over the OG game and this is because the devs didn't add it in willy-nilly. They rebuilt the lighting from the ground up though they still use some leftover screen space techniques.

    How is this still like the only FPS game with global illumination? It looks great, I still don't think there's another game that looks better overall. Other attempts have also run REALLY bad like cyberpunk. There were a few workarounds in metro such as light "travelling really slow". When you turn the lighting off, it takes like 2 seconds for it to fully disappear. Totally worth it IMO.
    P.S. You can replace a single game file to get a newer implementation of DLSS. I run the game (also on a 3070) maxed out 1440 with DLSS on quality and get generally about 10 fps better than with the old file AND it looks MUCH better! 100% worth it for massive performance improvement!

    How can anyone say the game is better in the enhanced? Sure it may be more accurate but games are a form of art. Art is about feel not accuracy.
    If a portrait artist painted a subject and captured a persons essence and is able to convey emotion through the piece but leaves out the persons flaws (gap in tooth, wart or pimple) isnt the piece better for it? If a AI bot paints the same subject and gets the lighting an every details more accurate which one looks and feels better.
    Metro is all about atmosphere! Color accuracy and blowing out lighting are a loss to the game not an improvement. The darkness is what makes the game hard, tense and depressing.
    Clearly the enhanced is more accurate but it missed the intension of the original vision. When the game designer made the original game and light sources it was based on the technology at the time. Maybe the enhanced version should remove and reduce light sources so that the lighting can be more accurate but not looking like the gamma was just maxed out.

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  2 года назад +1

      Yeah definitely - the original game is definitely more moody, and because the lighting in the ray traced version was deterministic rather than an artist adjusting it, that's how it turned out. However I think as programmers and artists get better - we'll see better ray tracing implementations. It'll only be worse if devs get complacent.

    • @MarcuzXD
      @MarcuzXD Год назад +2

      Because the game IS better with the enhanced edition. If you think it looks too bright you can literally just lower the gamma. It's not 'blowing out the lighting', it's lighting the scene correctly. There's no reason interiors should be pitch-black during daylight, or when there are numerous light sources throughout the scene. Rasterized lighting is not a choice, it's a technical limitation. There are plenty of dark, pitch-black areas in the Enhanced edition that only shows up where it makes sense.
