S2 Luke is struggling with the same case as S1 Ryu. In that Luke is a very solid character, but because there are so many characters who not only serve his role but do it better. Especially not helping that with the damage nerf with Luke, you need to win more times than other characters.
I mained Luke in s1 but moved on to Jamie in s2, but went back to Luke in one of the previous MR phases just to play him again for a bit. He's still good to me. Yea his damage isn't as great but he still has amazing buttons, safe pressure and that sandblast is still really good. His game plan is no different and is still super effective. I honestly think it became a matter on preference. He is a shoto type, like a hybrid shoto, but once Akuma came out and Ryu finally joined the game, you got 4 options and 3 of them are way more popular. Now Terry is about to come out and he's a shoto (or close to it), so that'll be 5 options and 4 of them are waaay more popular than Luke. When the game has characters with similar archetypes and they're all around the same level of being good, at that point it comes down to personal preference. So, to me, Luke fell off, but not from one thing, but from a combination of things. Nerfs to him, buffs to other shotos, and DLC of shotos, and popularity. What this shows me is Luke wasn't popular as a character, but only because he was dumb good in s1. Remember, he was hated in sfv but you saw a ton of him because he was so top tier at the end of that game and that continued into sf6, but now that the battlefield is a lot more even, he just isn't people's choice of character for a reason or more that I said previously. His design and personality had to hit and neither did or at least no as much as Capcom wanted. It was rather too safe or too try hard. But let me stop. Sorry for the long ass comment. lol
i agree with everything except his design and personality. I didn’t like him AT ALL in sfv because he was just some cocky logan/jake paul clone. But in Sf6 they really steered into his MMA design and it looks great. Plus his personality is more like a lovable idiot, meathead now. This is coming from a Luke main in season 2
Hes still quite good. Anyone saying otherwise is a doomer. He still gets fat damage off his heavy buttons, can still throw loop you, still has one of the better level 1 supers, and has a good ex reversal. It is impossible for him to fall off. Hes just not top tier
Nope. They scaled the damage of his bnbs, removed big damage combo routes, reduced the hurtbox on Cr MP and jump HP, and some more nerfs. He got hit bad, still pretty viable thou just not top 3 anymore.
Luke's knuckle combos do less damage than Akuma or Bison, all of his key pokes got nerfed (cr lp, cr mp, cr mk, st mk), his level 1 is nerfed to the ground so he's really bad in anti zoning. I'd consider him to be weaker than Ryu Ken and Akuma
Yeah I'm a newer player who chose Luke day 1 and it's been nerf after nerf. It feels like Ryu is faster with better pokes at this point. Tack on damage and he's better All around. All the other shotos can literally walk backwards and Luke can't catch them. Most of his ways of pressuring are interruptible now.
As if he needed a lvl 1 to punish other fireballs, considering that no other character can do the same. His super still super fast and good for punishes.
@@ricniclasI mean it’s cool when characters have their own individual things they can use, separates them from the rest of the cast and makes them more unique
@@yamsSMP Yeah, but it is cool when the character have weaknesses. Season 1 Luke had no weaknesses, and he didn't even let you play a fireball war against him, on top of having an amazing fireball game of his own
Luke fell off for the same reasons DJ and JP fell off. Cause they were characters people abused and were rewarded for the bare minimum. They aren’t even gutted characters just neutralized but in a meta of people gravitating towards easier wins for either self gratitude or well *1Milli* It’s not surprising they were so popular before then once nerfed people run to the next easier character to exploit. Luke is fine and still a more than viable option to win tournaments (noahtheprodigy) you just aren’t rewarded as much for going ungabunga.
Imo Ken's jinrai and dragon lash aren't really used in top level play. Kakeru basically shut down angry birds dragon lash spam with perfect parry. And his jinrai is only used for combo routes you can DP it on block. I think ken is still viable because he has solid tools but retained high damage potential. Plus he has ex fireball drive rush which is still good and free corner carry on any hit including jab
Honestly, I think it's just because he has run. He can link combos as if he still has drive gauge without actually using any drive gauge. So even when he is burnt out, he can still combo you as if he still has drive meter.
Luke is the most honest character design so making him as strong as the rest of the cast instantly makes him not that great of a character to pick at all levels of play, because all the of person has to worry about it drive rush & jump ins, while the Luke player might have to watch out for 1 or 2 more additional options that other characters might have. All in all it is always better to pick a degenerate character because it makes it easier to get cheep wins. Don't let anyone talk down on your character for being degenerate though. Also if you look at all the win quotes from other characters when they beat Luke they always talk about him being basic or simple, something along those lines, so take that how you will...
As a Shoto if u aren't the best one u surve almost no purpose Thats why no other fighting game has 5+ shotos because how redundant it is to have take more than 1 or 2 slots
@@rcking90 I prefer all of those personally haha. When I look at Luke I actually want to punch him in the face 😂 Might be he just reminds me of someone I know

@@MrStalyn the damage nerf is crazy akuma has combos that should be death but people survive the luk nerf was too agressive I think jp needs help too
Luke is a great character that just isn’t broken anymore. That’s why he isn’t top tier anymore
They removed the high damage from of a character that has no tricks but I think he still got what it takes.
Luke’s my main IDC. I’m not a high level player anymore just an average Plat. So character tiers make extremely little difference at this stage.
Personally the thing that affected me the most wasnt even the damage, but the hitbox nerfs on cr mp and cr lp.
Lol so Luke actually have to use other buttons now.
