Not only was this his first NASCAR race, but he hadn't attended a NASCAR event until the week before and didn't drive the car until earlier that week! He's also returning to NASCAR to race again at the Indianapolis Speedway (Home of the Indy 500) this weekend. It's all part of a project (Project 91) by the race team to bring in drivers from other series that began with Kimi Raikkonen. And despite having a year left on his contract, his V8 team is looking to replace him in the car next year so that he can join NASCAR full time in 2024.
Oh you'd already answered it, doh! Well I added a little more context lol.
Watch tombstone
I was there...the final lap wasn't even close. There was a family of Kiwis in the stands drenched from the rain and they were ecstatic!
Shane was given a ride for the Chicago street race only, he is still under contract with his team in the v8 supercuts in AUS. There are rumors that he is coming back in 24 or 25 to run in our NASCAR Truck series for the full season. He shook up a lot of the NASCAR drivers by winning and dominating the weekend, they have all had to go back and re-evaluate their street racing skills. He probably won't have as easy a time winning next time. It was awesome to see though.
He is coming back this season to drive 2 more road races.
Downgrading him to truck would be a travesty given his experience and the fact he's shown he can hold his own against the biggest names.
He's got cup offers right now dude and it sounds like he's coming to nascar in 2024
Shane’s running the trucks & cup race this weekend!
What source are you getting this from? Hes running 1 Truck race and 1 Cup race this year, then its pretty much all but confirmed hes driving full time next year, in Cup. Not Trucks. Hes had multiple offers for Cup rides
We have a number of track styles for NASCAR, but this is still epic. It is hard to drive that perfectly.
And the rain helped a tad bit, it ended up being just 60 something laps instead of the full 200 they were gonna have.
First Nascar street race ever. Huge attendance, record setting, fun to see and proud that my home town hosted it! So cool.
My wife and I watched this live in Chicago, and it was awesome! This was the first such race held here through the streets of Chicago on a course along the lakefront, and it was a fantastic sight, and a great earnest young Kiwi winning made it even better!
He ran ANOTHER race today and finished in the top ten! That’s unheard of, he’s a beast. As an American and a huge nascar fan we LOVE seeing people come enjoy our country and sport!
There is a big following for NASCAR here in New Zealand...a lot of us looked forward to that race and were ABSOLUTELY stoked that he won! You guys should also keep tabs on Kiwis Scott McLaughlin and Scott Dixon in Indycar! ;)

I was there in Chicago and the last lap wasn't even close! There was a family from New Zealand in the stands near us drenched from the rain and they were ecstatic!
This was a completely new type race for NASCAR and Shane represented your country amazingly. He put on a clinic, was humble and kind, and was a pleasure to watch. Loved seeing this.
He is so humble and represented your country in the best way possible. Well done
7:26 his interview made me cry! What an adorable and grateful young man!!!
Shane will be racing this weekend in Indianapolis for Trackhouse Racing #91 again. Also he will be making his Truck Series debut in either Watkins Glen or Daytona. There was an amazing camera view of Shane's feet and how he worked the pedals. It was mesmerizing to watch!

I am from NC and have been going to NASCAR and watching events my whole life. This street race was a first for the series, but the series races on oval tracks of all sizes, road courses, and now as a first, the street course. SVG shook things up a bit and we were proud for him and happy for him as well. This weekend he will race again on a road course in Indianapolis, Indiana. Look for him to do well, but the regulars are not strangers to this type of racing coming up so it will be more of a challenge. EnJOY
I’ve been a NASCAR fan since 2008 and this was one of the greatest moments I’ve ever watched. SVG was awesome to watch and seeing him win is what I believe, has changed how NASCAR teams look at road course racing. He’s racing again this weekend at an oval near Indianapolis called Lucas Oil Raceway Park and then at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
I was there and the final 3 laps weren't even close...a New Zealand family near us was going crazy. The first 2 days of this event sucked ass but this race made up for it! 👍🏼
NASCAR has traditionally used oval tracks like Daytona (Florida), Taladega (Alabama), Bristol (Tennessee), Charlotte (North Carolina), and others, but they've also used road courses including Watkins Glen (New York) and the old Riverside (California) course before that was torn down. Road courses are different since drivers have to turn left and right, and not just go around in a circle all the time. This was the first time that they did a race on the streets of a city and chose Chicago for the location. Chicago planned the road course in Grant Park and set up the barricades to create the track for this event.
You forget two Nor Cal tracks. Sears Point Raceway near Sonoma and Laguna Seca Raceway near Monterey

you can also thank iRacing as well since they laser scan everything, this course has been available on iRacing for about a year now. They was a integral part in helping with the course layout and logistics of placing everything needed.
@@johnbernstein7887 Monterrey is not NorCal

Reminds me of a young Mario Andretti, won in every kind of race you could think of from sprint to Formula one. I always believed Mario had some special sort of super senses, if that's true all of his family has those same super senses. Just like Great NZ driver, you can bet a lot of eyes are going to be following his career.
As someone from New Zealand I was thrilled to see Shane win!!
God Defend New Zealand!
First time they raced in Chicago too!
I love the reaction and excitement you guys show for these videos. And I love the fact that you're soon coming to the good ole USA!!!!!🤩
Another great video. Be safe during your travels.
He dominated!
You guys should do a regular NASCAR reaction because this is definitely not normal NASCAR. They race primarily on different oval variations. SVG will have a tough time adjusting to those, but I'm sure he can.
he was basically driving a car that runs select races during the season typically road courses f1 drivers and other indycar roadcourse drivers come and drive when nascar races at road courses its called project 91 the team is trackhouse racing and they have 2 full time drivers and this was a 3rd car thats part time called project 91 its to give drivers from different racing series oppurtunities to compete in nascar
New subscriber from the great state of Michigan. I have fallen in love with your family. The videos are so heartwarming and special. I can't wait to Bing all ur past videos!
Glad to see your reaction to that. I was watching that race live and cheering him on. Also just found out that he will be coming to NASCAR full time next year. Will be fun to watch and see how he does.
NASCAR started out racing ovals only, but in recent years (actually decades) they have started adding road courses to the schedule. This year they added their first street race. It has been traditional for teams to bring in "ringers" for the road course races, drivers from other disciplines who know how to run road courses who can take a regular driver's place or an extra car. Now that road courses are a pretty regular part of the schedule, the younger drivers have taken to learning to road race so the ringers aren't seen as often. But a couple of years ago Project 91 started up to bring outside drivers in for one off events. Kimi Raikkonnen did it, and now so has Jenson Button. That's how von Gisbergen was brought in. With the success he had, he is going to finish out his commitment in V8 Supercars this year and then come to do the season in NASCAR next year.
A few years ago we had Marcos Ambrose in Nascar, and he did not do so well on the ovals. He seemed to be such aa honest guy. We loved him.
Just a little local trivia: NASCAR began here in NC. It's roots are derived from Prohibition and the guys who used to run Moonshine throughout the state. They needed to be able to outrun law enforcement.
As an update since then.. SVG is coming to NASCAR to race in the lower series (fridays and saturdays in trucks and a different type of car) next year now. He was granted release and a replacement lined up in the aussie supercars. Overall he is an expert of similar cars on street races and in rain, something NASCAR has never done before, so it was a perfect storm for him to impress. He has a ton to learn and its cool to me that he made the choice to run lower series of NASCAR to learn oval racing. They do half a dozen or so road races a year, the one street race now, and the rest are various types of oval track that are all different. Would be cool to see you guys learn a bit about nascar basics or highlights
I've read that he might be coming to NASCAR full time next year. Could be wrong tho. He is racing this weekend again in the truck series...if you folks are able to watch it somehow, show him support! Im rooting for him and I live in Wisconsin...lol.

SVG is racing again this weekend, first nascar truck race and 2nd cup race in Indianapolis
BTW, this was not a 'normal' NASCAR event, it was a first time event and a perfect storm event for SVG.
I never watched Nascar but I did watch this race. Racing on the streets of Chicago was Awesome!
He’s back this weekend racing at Indy road course
SVG is racing on an oval here tomorrow, and on Sunday he is racing at Indianapolis.
Welcome to our wonderful world of NASCAR, and what a fantastic way to introduce yourselves! So NASCAR is traditionally seen as the oval races and that's largely true, but the last few years have been shaking things up a lot. They've ran two road courses every year for many years now, but that was it. But just recently they've bumped that number up to 6 with many different styles of tracks. The tracks raced on are still predominantly ovals, but they're experimenting more to try and got more lure in with the F1 crowd showing that we can indeed turn right. They've also recently had a change of cars as well, the newest generation which is what you saw there. They're actually very very similar to what is over in Supercars, so it wasn't as much of a leap to learn the car as what it used to be for SVG. As for his ride, he got a call from the team Trackhouse Racing to do a one off drive at Chicago. But since he did so well, he'll be racing this weekend at Indianapolis road course as well with a few others joining him. Notably, other Supercar driver, Brodie Kostecki. He has also shown a lot of interest to make the hop to full time NASCAR driving as early as next year and his Supercar team said they were fully on board if he wanted to leave a year early. It's a great time to be a NASCAR fan and we always love new eyes! Ovals are a ton of fun too, don't count them out
On your next trip to the US, try to hit Bristol, TN. Nascar & NHRA in one place! You'll be stunned the first time you see the Bristol Nascar coliseum!
This was a perfect race for a newcomer. This was the first Chicago street race ever. Plus NASCAR mostly races on ovals. It only runs a few road courses per year. The other 32 races are on oval tracks
7 u mean Montreal is coming next year so thats 8
@@MotorSport33-f5u they aren't running 8 Road Courses next year
....they race 6 road courses a year now (except 2021 when they ran 7)
You put a smile on my face every time I watch y'all. Thanks for the happiness you bring
If you ever get the chance to go to a NASCAR race, you should go. You won't be disappointed. TV is a real disservice to the live experience.
There were three drivers in last week's IndyCar race, in Nashville, who are from New Zealand as well!! They are Marcus Armstrong, Scott Dixon, and Scott McLaughlin!!! Because of that, I'm surprised IndyCar isn't more popular there!!
Scott Dixon has even been knighted in New Zealand. Marcus Armstrong certainly knew of his as a kid. He was on a podcast recently like having to remind himself he's in team meetings with one of his idols helping him learn things every weekend
I'm so glad you guys got to see the beauty that is Chicago's lakefront park! We also don't watch a ton of NASCAR up in Chicago to be honest, It's very much a southern thing. A lot of people in Chicago were very against the race because it disrupted buses trains and traffic, But I think it made for an incredibly interesting street race and a beautiful backdrop that promotes the beauty of Chicago and tourism in the city.
That was awesome! 😮 Thank you for sharing your reactions to this amazing race!❤ The oval race track you are thinking about is the Daytona raceway! Indianapolis raceway is also oval! ❤ Love from Oklahoma, USA. 👍😎
As a NASCAR fan since the 70's as a wee lad, your Kiwi here has been a smack in the ass to fire up the fans and have something quite extraordinary flash before our eyes that's absolutely exciting to witness. People love Shane because he rocked our world! To be fair though, Chicago was a perfect storm that was formulated long ago. first - Nascar has never raced a street circuit. Next, Chicago saw a record breaking storm with terrible flooding, almost didn't get this race in and was shortened, so wet track, sprinkles - NASCAR doesn't race in the rain and lastly, Shane is a specialist of street courses and wet track because the V8SC races in the wet. All the right ingredients made for an epic piece of history and it was fantastic to watch.
But he's back! He is at the Indianapolis road course as we speak, in fact, about to qualify. he had a good race last night really, his first time in a Craftsman truck on an short track oval. He came through without a scratch I think.
I would wager heavily that Shane is a bigger deal here in America right now than he is in NZ ~ So yeah, it's awesome. People are taking to him quite easily.
I’ve been waiting for this video for a bit! This was huge and one of the best things I’ve witnessed in the 15 years I’ve watched nascar. He and another fellow Supercars driver Brodie Kostecki (who’s leading the Supercars championship so far) along with other international drivers like Jenson Button, Mike Rockefeller, and Kamui Kobayashi will race this weekend at the Indianapolis Road Course this Sunday and SVG will also race at the short oval track nearby on Friday in the Truck series to get some oval racing experience. He initially was going to finish one more season in Supercars but he’s making the switch next year in 2024. We don’t know his plans exactly just yet, but more than likely it’s almost finalized and we’re just waiting for an announcement in the next coming weeks or month. Kiwi’s have always had a strong knack for motorsports (and other things as well) but it’s honestly a proud time to be a Kiwi in the motorsports world right now. Also Nascar has changed dramatically. They used to be an oval series with 2 road courses a year for most of its history and now it’s the most versatile schedule in the auto racing world with probably the most versatile Stock Car ever built. Ovals in various shapes and sizes, a track shaped like a triangle, a dirt oval race, and 6 road races with Chicago being a street race and the first ever in the Cup series. They even sent a car to the 24 hours of Le Mans as Garage 56 entry and put up some stunning lap times. Fans in France talked about how the V8 powered car was their alarm clock and @driver61 has a video on that along with NASCAR’s diverse schedule. Also don’t feel bad for not knowing too much about this event, out of all the countries in the world, NZ didn’t have a live broadcast to watch for some reason. Maybe that changes but who knows.
First Nascar city street race too...was pretty exciting. Very picturesque race taking place right along the lakefront and in the city.
NASCAR races on ovals primarily yes, but their are about 6 road courses per season which is 1/6 of the season, 36 races in one season
you sir are right! Chicago had an oval a few years ago.
Cup series (that race) was it's First instalment of a street race!
So no drivers knew the course!
For him to come in a foreign country, a passenger side driven car , a brand new race course !
And Winning is amazing!!!
Cheers from Canada!!!
I haven't been into NASCAR for a while, but this is so extremely impressive. All of those tight turns...on a track you are not used to...just wow. If you look closely there were some turns where the car is literally inches from the wall while going at a fast speed. 1 hit and he loses any chance of re-taking 1st place. I'm glad it seems like he's committed to coming over here in another year because this is the sort of guy who can easily become a fan favorite. He won, with little preparation, and still seemed extremely down to Earth and humble.
That was truly EPIC! I used to really follow NASCAR (TONY STEWART #20 SMOKE) back before it got really political. I hear now they are getting back to just hard driving and fun! I am so happy for your family (and Countrymen)to have a Home Town Boy bring home the DUB for all the Kiwis!!!!
Great wholesome video as usual! We really ❤ you guys and can't wait to have you over as our guests in this corner of the World! I'm also excited to see your European vlogs as I love seeing all the different things the World has to offer. That is what originally drew me to your Channel back when you started. You were gracious enough to bring us into your home and show us your community and lifestyle. Now we get to return the favor. I hope you get to the DC/MD/VA area so I'll know you are at least close by lol
The USA will be a little bit cooler when you guys and gals get here 😊
Don't forget Marcus Ambrose was from down under. And Marcus has won a few NASCAR races also!
the last supercar driver to race in NASCAR was Marcos Ambrose. SVG is planning to race in NASCAR full time it just depends on his Red Bull Racing contract which as someone said they are looking to let him leave early to follow his dreams.
NASCAR typically is run on an oval or tri-oval course as you noted, but there are a few races a year where they race on a road course, but that is still at a racetrack that also hosts oval races. One race a year at most is run through the streets of a major city as happened hear as they raced through the City of Chicago. Because of the rarity of the event, it makes these races even more special to both the drivers and the fans.
When you guys come to the US you need to attend a NASCAR race. I have attended several races at several tracks and it is a thrilling experience.
I've been waiting for this.
Hes racing again this weekend at the Indianapolis motor speedway road course in the same car he ran in the clips you watched 👍 🇳🇿 🏁 🏆
Fun fact: NASCAR has its roots among Southerners distilling and distributing illegal homemade whiskey known as moonshine, white lightning, corn liquor, corn squeezings, popskull, busthead, and the like, it was mighty potent stuff!😜😜😜
They were constantly being pursued by revenue agents known as "revenuers" since they hadn't paid any taxes or licensing fees for their product. The moonshine runners would soup up their car engines in order to outrun the revenuers. They couldn't help but brag to their other moonshine runners how fast their car could go and would challenge one another to races to claim bragging rights. From such humble beginnings NASCAR was born, first being performed on dirt tracks, now on asphalt before thousands of fans and a tv audience! 😁😁😁
Many of the veteran drivers are gone. Hey a good racer can make a name for himself. NASCAR through the years have had road courses. One use to be here in Wisconsin, Road America, Elkhart Lake was it's name. Road courses show the real talent of NASCAR drivers.
As an American NASCAR fan, I'll just say that I didn't know who SVG was before Chicago. But after watching him there and in Indianapolis (another top ten finish for him) this past weekend, I have to say that he's already got me onboard his fan train and I fully believe he will definitely shake things up once he goes full time over here in NASCAR.
Heads up family! SVG is racing in NASCAR at the Indianapolis Road Course this weekend along with Brodie Kostecki who is also a V8 Supercars driver.
and Jenson Button

NASCAR has been inserting more different types of tracks in to the schedule in recent years. More road courses, dirt track racing and now that Chicago street race. NASCAR has been racing on road courses for a long time (They have been at Sonoma and Watkins Glen since forever) but there has been more of a movement recently to add more of a variety of races. SVG was awesome to watch. Even when he fell back in the field due to strategy he passed everyone like it was easy. I think that SVG meant that he would do one more full season in Australia before racing full time in NASCAR. He will be back in NASCAR for the Indianapolis road course race this coming weekend for a different team.
He is what is called a ringer. A specialist that only drives the road coarses.
First NASCAR race in my beautiful city!! I love Chicago
What a great race! We live just outside of Chicago and regret not being in the city for the race. I can't wait until it comes back next year - come on over and go with us!
Nascar holds races at 42 different tracks in the US and Canada. They are broken down into Short Tracks (10) less than 1 mile, Intermediate (15)1 to 2 miles, Superspeedways (6) greater than 2 miles, and Road Courses (11).
Guys, great video as always. You might also want to check out last years, I think, La Mon race when a Nascar Camero was entered in the unlimited class and beat everyone from their class and below plus 3 or 4 cars from the next class up. Biggest complaint was the exhaust note from this car. Spectators couldn't sleep when it went by because it was so loud.
Hi from Texas
I would LOVE to see you guys react to some NASCAR. I think the kids would love it.
NASCAR has run road coarses for a long time. But they didn't run as many and they never advertised them as much. The ovals/tri-ovals always brought in more people crowd and TV wise. It also lead to all the left turn only jokes. The cars normally top out around 200mph. On the some tracks they are capable of going faster but they have restrictor plates put in the intake to limit the airflow and there for the horsepower and speed.
Shane is from AUCKLAND
He was hired by the team as a "ringer", hopefully he'll come back and do more races. 🇳🇿🇺🇸🚗
its funny you say that
He's racing today in the craftsman truck series at IRP his first oval race and this Sunday in the 91 car at the indy road course along with Brodie Kostecki who's going to be driving the 33 for richard childress racing
He will be racing this Sunday here in Indianapolis, plus more than likely he will be a full time NASCAR driver starting next year in 2024!
From someone who watches dozens of Nascar races every year in person. I recommend that if your family goes, make sure you bring ear muffs. The cars are a lot louder in person than on the tv. Also if your family goes, most tracks have booths set up outside the track where you can get free stuff and good food. One year I went to Charlotte Motor Speedway and Coca-Cola had a machine there that you could customize your own soda cans with names for free.
How awesome is that....! I live in Indiana but only about 40 miles from Chicago. I was there on Sat. the 14th with my Granddaughter, to see a play. There was also a Festival on State Street, going on, so we decided to go and see it as it was walking distance. So glad we did. There was vendors and food trucks drinks and music. One man was preforming the Chicago Blues with his harmonica. Chicago is the best....
Makes me so happy to see this as an American who loves Nascar and motorsports in general.
Most of the Nascar races are on ovals of varying size and shapes but there are a few road tracks sprinkled in over the year. They have even begun running one race a year on dirt to harken back to the early years of stock car racing. It takes place on the shortest track in the series which is in Bristol speedway in Bristol Tennessee.
They're always low on gas at the end of a race because more gas is more weight which slows you down. MASCAR used to be almost entirely ovals with just one road course, but they've been branching out in recent years.
I have been a NASCAR fan since the late 1980’s. If you are in the Midwest in the states, I will take you to a race. Nascar is one of the most accessible sporting events in the states for fans. You can be on the track before the race and sign the state finish line.
I’ve been waiting for this subject matter. Was a great race. NASCAR had never done a street race before this race where SVG has done this often in his racing series.
Great race and props to SVG!!!
In NASCAR you are allowed to sub drivers to race for your team. Because the Chicago race was midway through the season, and I don't remember the original driver. But you are allowed to have people sub in and drive your car for your team if your driver cant race that weekend.
There's no "original driver" for this car. The team runs the 91 car with guest drivers ("Project 91") with F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen having driven the same car this year at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) track. The team doesn't have a chartered guaranteed spot so it does mean that the driver has to qualify well to get into the race.
@@pigs18 I didnt know they were doing Project 91 till now. Only thing I remember was they had a permanent drive last year.
Great race Shane, as a fellow Shane it's awesome to see
Recently it was announced Shane Van Gisbergen will race tomorrow (August 13th) on the Indianapolis Road Course, and eventually full time in one of the lower divisions to work his way up to the Cup Series
That was actually really impressive it’s not easy to drive that fast on a track like that🔥
I just checked the schedule, this week the race is at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Shane is going to be driving in that race. Most NASCAR tracks are oval with two road course's, but in the part few years they are diversifying adding the street course in Chicago giving fans a variety.
....did you actually bother to look that closely at the schedule?
@@jabber1990 Yes Aug 13 Indy
@duanetelesha you didn't look that hard, they've ran MORE than 2 road courses since 2018 (except for 2020)
@@jabber1990 Yes you are correct, but cutting a couple of paved lanes into and through the infield I do not consider a true road course the oval is still there.
Hi Guys! I was born in the Hospital across from Chicago, Lived there when I did not know so, but has been around for awhile now. But Chicago's street race was NASCARS first street race since forever this year. full of rain water shutdowns. Was a good street car race though.
Americans always root for the underdog
He is actually racing in the NASCAR race this weekend in Indianapolis!
I was waiting for this!!!! NASCAR is awesome go see a race if you can!!!!
NASCAR actually races on like 6 other roadcourses and Shane is actually racing this upcoming weekend at the Indy roadcourse , along with Brodie Kostecki, & an endurance racing driver named Kamui Kobayashi.
Hello from Tennessee.
it was a 1 time thing. he joined trackhouse project 91 for the chicago race. He is actually racing this weekend in the truck series and cup series again. Same team same car. Indy Road Course.
If you go, depending on when you go and what you wanna see.
Theres road course races thus week @ Indianapolis, next week in Watkins Glen, Ny, and October @ Charlotte, NC.
Short tracks left are in End of August Bristol, TN, and November in Martinsville, VA.
Speedway ovals in Darlington, SC, Ft Worth, TX, Miami, FL.
Superspeedway in October... Talladega, AL
Nascar is huge here in the South. I only live 30 minutes away from Talladega ❤
I used to camp out there on race weekends and helped shuttle people to the tracks.
That was a good race. Nascar has a few rode courses that they run but that was a first in Chicago.
I'm kind of surprised that no one tried to carjack the race cars. I think Chicago is the carjacking capital of the USA
SVG is racing here this weekend at Indy in a NASCAR Cup on the road course and he is also racing in the NASCAR Truck this weekend too at a short track IRP.
So cool! 😊
SVG races in Supercars, he was tapped in by Justin Marks to race in NASCAR. Trackhouse is the team SVG races for in NASCAR and they announced that SVG will do another race at Indianapolis this weekend.
He's racing again today and Sunday. Looking forward to it!
He has 2 more races here coming in the next month. And Trackhouse the team he drove for is talking about next year also.
SVG is running the Indy road course in CUP this weekend too (Sunday). Many supercar and sports car drivers are on the roster for this weekend including him. Was a great run for him!
He should be driving the same #91 Trackhouse Chevy if I recall.
