Just a few tips...when recording audio make sure that your microphone level settings are well down below the normal..(this will also involve reducing the volume levels on the backing track)...this is done to give you plenty of head room to edit and stop clipping on the final track. Before exporting as you did above you should have rendered the two tracks into one..(i.e. highlight the two and render to new track)...On the final track try these effects...Normalise, Compress (with the two boxes at the bottom unclicked), Normalise, Compress (with the two boxes at the bottom clicked) and finally Normalise. This should make the recording sound full and at a good level to listen to...Also export file as wav if possible...

That will sort the ''9999 unanticipated host error'' problem.

I knew all those tips, and I can bring some more : 4:30 you can use the silence audio button : it looks like this manual.audacityteam.org/o/m/images/1/16/tool_edit_silence.png or you can use the shortcut Ctrl+L : Silence Audio replaces the currently selected audio with absolute silence. Does not affect label tracks. 4:50 : you don't need to create the new track, just press record again on another and it'll create it and record on it. Great video though for beginner, keep up the good work !

It's not letting me do it!! I converted a song to mp3, and no matter how many times I try to record over it, the song does not play after I press record. I start playing the song, but then it doesn't let me press record.
what you need to dois click on transport on the top of audacity on the drop down menu you will see overdub on/off make sure that's checked and you should be able to record while the background music is playing, I had the same problem
Hi C-Threep, you seem to be a bit confused, like so many other people; there is no such a thing as a "karaoke track" man. First, a karaoke is composed of 3 basic things: 1) a backing track (it has no singing or melody of course) 2) a background (can be a plain color or a video of your choice and 3) the synched lyrics that one uses to sing the melody while you listen to the backing track (also called "playback"). So, what you are using is a "backing track" or "playback" and NOT a "karaoke track" which DOES NOT exist. Capisci? Oh and thanks for the explanation of how to record the voice while listening to a playback. You can also record your voice while watching a real karaoke and later extract the playback from the video file and insert it along your recorded voice, taking care to match it well. Sorry it got a little long, hope everything's clear now.
Mine doesn’t start together when I click on the recording button. Instead of it to start together my vocal recording starts right at the end of the sound..idk if that makes sense but they don’t start together like yours.
@@lathree you have to add a new track from track tab on top, and then you have to press and hold the RECORD button, and leave it then it will start recording in a new track!

Look up a video on latency in audacity, there should be plenty of them here. It will give you the correct latency settings and that should solve your problems.
You can also bounce your vocal tracks as audio cells if your a session singer and the person hiring you to record vocals wants to enhance the track with their software. Everyone who records music should know about Audacity and have it. However if you want stereo vocal tracks you should invest in a pre-amp mixer like an Alto ZMX52, other manufacturers like Alesis and Behringer also make such things. The Alto ZMX52 is one example of the most basic pre-amp, it has a choice of quarter inch jack or XLR mic inputs. The pre-amp basically allows you to connect your microphone to the computer via the audio in-line on the back of your computer or if your using a laptop you can get USB audio interfaces.

You have a nice voice...For those of us that can't sing and want to record for fun, would you recommend doing it this way as you described in the video and then taking the whole track and putting it into something like garage band to edit the voice and make it sound better?? This is so frustrating. I need help. My audacity is not behaving like yours. I troubleshooted how to find where to change the recording device on my computer and it doesn't show up like on your computer. I thought I selected my bluetooth headphones as my recording or input device, but it didn't turn up in the list of recording devices in audacity. When I pressed record, it went straight to the end of the track and started to record. I must be doing something wrong. Help please. I would really appreciate it.

Seeing this video in 2020. Good overall *except* that if I want to make a karaoke, I have to click on the beginning of the background track, THEN PRESS SHIFT-R and only then will it create a new track and start recording my voice. Not sure at all at about 02:15 how you were able to click on the record button and it created a new track. Did you press the Shift key as you clicked on record? As you hovered over the record button, I saw it say to do Shift-R to record on a new track. Anyhow, what happened is that my voice was quite low in volume so I slid the volume slider to the right, then there was so much distortion to my voice. So I slid the volume of the original karaoke track to the left, cutting down the volume, and then slid my voice track a bit to the right, and it was better. Overall, I sounded pretty pathetic, haha! I'll just go back to my usual way, to play a karaoke and mix my voice in using my trusty Mackie mixer! And record on Audacity.
I have done everything as you suggested in this video and when I hit the record button it drops down another track which does not show record on the track, the timeline does not move to record. Why? I can see my audio level moving up and down but can't record. I'm using a Gemini mixer as my input for the microphone and Speaker/headphone for output, host windows WASAPI on my laptop. Your voice will record late, so after you record, just shift the voice track to match. You can match them after...
i think you need a better sound card for your mic, A good interface like Focusrites Scarlett Solo can record in real time.

How do you get the music to play through the headphones
Plug ur headphone to the green socket and ur.mic the pink.socket or the hole that has a logo of mic

You should get a headphone set with a mic attached and it will play the audio back into the headphones as long as it has an audiojack.
If i use headphones for a mic, then i kinda have to plug in 2 sets of headphones, one so that i can hear the instrumental and one for the mic

you need to hit the back space button or rewind so the track is starting at the beginning or it will start wherever it left off

Eventhough I sang with a correct timing the audio of mine still sounds that I'm not singing in correct timing

You can usually pay $1 for a cover version of a song. There are plenty of Karaoke websites.

You have a nice voice...For those of us that can't sing and want to record for fun, would you recommend doing it this way as you described in the video and then taking the whole track and putting it into something like garage band to edit the voice and make it sound better?? Also, what do you think about recording into a phone recorder while listening to the karaoke music on headphones and then dropping both tracks into audacity? Or is that more complicated?

This is so frustrating. I need help. My audacity is not behaving like yours. I troubleshooted how to find where to change the recording device on my computer and it doesn't show up like on your computer. I thought I selected my bluetooth headphones as my recording or input device, but it didn't turn up in the list of recording devices in audacity. When I pressed record, it went straight to the end of the track and started to record. I must be doing something wrong. Help please. I would really appreciate it.

Hi, nicely explained. Question, would I need a mixer and or an interface?
Seeing this video in 2020. Good overall *except* that if I want to make a karaoke, I have to click on the beginning of the background track, THEN PRESS SHIFT-R and only then will it create a new track and start recording my voice. Not sure at all at about 02:15 how you were able to click on the record button and it created a new track. Did you press the Shift key as you clicked on record? As you hovered over the record button, I saw it say to do Shift-R to record on a new track.
Anyhow, what happened is that my voice was quite low in volume so I slid the volume slider to the right, then there was so much distortion to my voice. So I slid the volume of the original karaoke track to the left, cutting down the volume, and then slid my voice track a bit to the right, and it was better. Overall, I sounded pretty pathetic, haha! I'll just go back to my usual way, to play a karaoke and mix my voice in using my trusty Mackie mixer! And record on Audacity.

I have done everything as you suggested in this video and when I hit the record button it drops down another track which does not show record on the track, the timeline does not move to record. Why? I can see my audio level moving up and down but can't record. I'm using a Gemini mixer as my input for the microphone and Speaker/headphone for output, host windows WASAPI on my laptop. Can you help me?
