Shanghainese grandma made a big deal about your accent being from Pudong cos she's an OG Shanghainese (from Puxi) - they tend to be the ones to make a big deal about which part of shanghai your accent is from. My grandma was one and I don't speak it, but recognise that accent right away.
You could try to find people who speak Wu Chinese, that would be a lot easier to find. Everyone who speaks Northern Wu variant understands Shanghainese, in fact Shanghainese was the de facto lingua franca in the Yangtze delta region until early 1990s.
洋泾浜 does not mean "barbarian", it just means "inauthentic". the origin of the word is the pidgin language formed between English speaking and Shanghainese speaking traders, meaning "inauthentic English" spoken by local Shanghainese traders, certainly carries no connotation of "barbarian" (in fact, Chinese do not refer to foreigners as barbarians, but for some reason it is perceived as such in certain English circles)
wow just happened on your videos and can't stop watching .. you are showing us real places and people and you can speak ALL kind of languages so well .. brilliant !
Aw the Korean lady loved you haha 😄. Also Brazilians are also overly complimentary, I remember when I first started learning Portugues, my first month or so people just wouldn't stop complimenting me even though I sucked haha. But then it got to the point after a year or so that they quit noticing I was even American and they thought I was Brazilian and half the time they would be surprised I wasn't Brazilian lol specifically from São Paulo
I am loving your videos man. Was not aware you were a polyglot until I saw you speaking Swahili and now 3 languages in this video (Mandarin/ Shanghainese/Cantonese) You have the same personality and idiosyncrasies as one of my really good friends. Happened upon your channel with the recent Argentina video and have been watching the Mexico series since that day. One thing I love about your channel compared to other travel channels is that you are a polyglot and speak the cultures languages. This in itself is an incredible feat but it adds to the vibe of the videos. Can’t wait to see more!!

Flushing's Chinatown is very mixed with various Chinese populations from many regions of China and Taiwan unlike the Chinatowns in Manhattan and Brooklyn and limited mainly to subdivided Cantonese and Fuzhou enclaves. Manhattan's Chinatown is split up into the older established western Cantonese Chinatown and the later developed eastern Fuzhou Chinatown. Brooklyn has several Chinatowns in Sunset Park as the largest one and several miniature ones within Bensonhurst alone and a miniature one in Sheepshead Bay. Sunset Park Chinatown is now mostly Fuzhou speakers with still some long time Cantonese speakers while Bensonhurst and Sheepshead Bay Chinatowns are newly developed Cantonese Chinatowns.
I have been travelling the world and I have lived in few different places, when I saw you at first, in one of the Tanzania video, I could tell that you are a smart guy, speaking languages it is always a sign of an immense culture, and speaking Chinese, it is not common, I like languages and I do communicate fluenty with a few, I am learning Chinese, interesting language.
Stumbled across one of your videos and got hooked of course (now subscribed) - Aside from the cool places your visit and all that, you language skill are mind blowing !!!! I jealous 😂 Safe travels !!!
I don't know when is the next time you will be in NYC and how well your Cantonese is, but if you are interested in practicing Cantonese while in NYC, the best Chinatowns to practice them in is the western part of Manhattan's Chinatown, you can still get by in Brooklyn's Sunset Park Chinatown though you will be much better off using Cantonese in the other Brooklyn Chinatowns in Bensonhurst and Sheepshead Bay, which have now taken over as the Cantonese cultural capital of NYC.
