Give them and show them love, and to do their absolute best and try, but at the same time, if they did everything in their power and their like this child. Then, it's understandable. Everyone can't and thats why you have schools for them to aid them and you have the resources. Use them. And sometimes, the child can go through something in their life horrorfic so that plays a part sometimes in their behavior
Honestly the dad never even put an effort to raise the kid and left it all to his wife. With all the restrictions he put she pretty much had to raise an angry kid without any mental prep plus no experience with children of her own. It's no wonder the kid wanted out as he problaly knew somethings wrong with the dad and was uncomfortable, just wasn't sure why.

One of my nieces was like this as a kid not wanting to eat her veg so I told her that if she didn't eat her veggies she would become a troll and she ate it with no complaints after that. It's kinda bribing/compromising but it worked in the end at least after she saw what a troll looked like 😂😂
