  • In this Not-a-"Shorts" short, I show you how I make holes in plastic that won't crack. This works on any thermoplastic with good results. Mind the fumes, though.

    A good use for those cheap non-temperature-controlled soldering irons that are too hot to stay tinned.

    I have had an old iron I used for 'plastic work' for years, just a cheapie from DSE, 25w... other uses are cutting 'square' holes for switches in plastic cases, and also joining plastic together again- 'welding them'- I use scaps of old plastic of the same type as 'filler rods', and its great for car parts etc that have cracked or broken- with enough practice (do the 'melting' from the back here as its more out of sight) and just melt the two sides back together again, using the 'filler' scrap to build the joint up for strength- you end up with the 'seeable side' looking practically untouched, with just a line in it, and a slight bulge on the other side (the extra thickness prevents future cracking I have found)- Even fixed car bumpers etc doing this...
