    Dude. As a 37 year old with 17yrs of exp. in one career field (Construction Inspection;) this was an extremely encouraging video. It's been a struggle to even figure out where in the heck to even get started. Been driving for Uber over the past 3 months, and I've had a handful of people randomly telling me I should get into IT. So, here we are. Lol. Thank you.

      I’m on the same boat. 13 years in the same profession (military and massage therapy, I know random) and now finally looking to retire from both since my body is beat up and the VA recommended I get into cybersecurity. Started doing my research and found the fundamentals of IT to be the first thing I learn and here I am now. Good luck and don’t give up. We are all gonna make it.

    how to get started? Get a job on the service desk/Help desk. People hate it but those are the trenches. The SD/HD path is the open mic nights for IT pros. That's how we get our chops. it gives you a strong basis. It teaches you customer service (that's what IT really is. Just CS for computers). it shows you the ropes. It shows that you've gone through the ringer before. It's literally made for newbies. My co-workers used to work at zoos, pizza places, Gamestops, etc.. when I was on the desk. Trust me, I was so happy to finally leave the desk but I look back on those days fondly because it taught me so much.

    I am so glad that I came across your videos. They are very helpful for a person stepping into the tech field with zero computer knowledge and background in IT. I am currently working part in admin and realized it was not the career I want to stick with long term. It’s highly stressful and demanding. The benefits are not great for a working parent like myself. Hence the reason I would like to explore IT and work remotely on the long run. I’m 35 and already burned out and feeling like my current position is stretching me thin and my talent is being underutilized. There is literally no scope for growth in my current position. I have a bachelors and masters level education and have worked as a production analyst for 2 years in the same company. I will be going on my 6th year this year but I’m ready for a change.

    I skipped my 12th grd and took the opportunity on Qualifi BTEC: HNC Cyber Security provided by a university here as my first step (Finished it this May). It was a great start and all, but it felt too Cyber-sided (as stated by the course). It was where my scholarship applied and flexible on to my family budget so I took it anyway.
    However, since it felt like it's lacking the basics luckly I found this channel on what to expect on the field. So far, I've got some ideas on what to pursue otw!
    I'm about to take up HND then Bachelors (if I get to sum up a budget) while studying online courses from Cybrary, Udemy, Skillshare. Recently I finished an IT certification from a small institute here in my area and was unexpectedly top in class. But ranking is just an evaluation, there's more to explore ~
    Thanks a lot for the guidance and frequent update regarding IT!

      When people say that, it usually means the industry is male-dominant, and therefore, sexist. It's not that women can't get a job in cybersecurity, but even if you do, your opinion and expertise will be questioned or doubted literally every waking second at work. Of course, some companies are exceptions, but micro aggressions/sexism towards women happens in any career, really, though some less than others.

I love my job and highly recommend this field. I agree the community of IT folks is the best group of people to work with. You don't need a degree to do this job as certifications will do just fine. Many people who talk about how to get into the IT field haven’t been in an entry level position for 20 or 30 years. Things have changed, and if you’re not hiring IT positions currently, it’s really hard to speculate on how to do it today (2021)!

    If you had to pick 2 (or even 1) programming languages that someone breaking into I.T. should know what would they be? I have classroom experience with Fortran, Basic, C, C+, XHTML, and machine language but I would not consider myself fluent in any.

    • @Itcareerquestions
      @Itcareerquestions  5 лет назад +2

      Hey Jason, if I were to pick a language that would help when specifically getting into the I.T. world(not being a programmer or developer) but a language or languages that would help with the infrastructure/support side of I.T. I would say definitely Python and Powershell would be at the top of my list. Bash if you'll be into Linux.
      The languages you've mentioned are great if you're looking to be a developer/programmer though.
      I hope this helps.

    Going into IT worked out great for me. I was working at a manufacturing job for 17 years when it closed. I was 44 years old. I went to the local community college for a Computer Networking associates degree. I graduated in 2011. It was rough at first becasue the recession was still on and I was competing with people who had years of IT experience . After doing many field tech jobs I got an interview for a job at an Air Force base. I was hired in at 39k a year back in 2015. I always kept my resume out there and finally I after moving through several other jobs on the base I now make 82k a year. SO glad I went into IT
