23:23 Dual Boot Windows and Linux
Frank emailed, "I want to dual boot a windows laptop. Where should I start? What programs do you suggest? What distro?" Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Element OS are great distros to start with, System76, Dell, Origin, and Gigabyte all offer Linux (or Linux friendly) laptops, OMGUbuntu is a great place to learn,
We talk running distros off a USB (live boot!) to try 'em out without installing. Help for Frank, and anybody that wants to start using Linux in the video!

32:06 Oh, There is a paperclip in there
Turns out there is a bit in iFixit’s Essential Electronics Toolkit Patrick can use instead of a paperclip when I’m resetting a router I'm testing. (For the eighth time in two days…) Also, @iFixit has a sense of humor!

On another note; damn you guys deserve much more subscriptions than you have.
I'm so glad you guys have improved the audio in this episode! Thank You!!!
I notice a lot of these calls are from spoofed numbers, usually with the same 3 digits as my cellphone. I can't outright blacklist those numbers because the other lines on my smartphone plan also have the same 3 digits (in hindsight not the best idea). I use Mr. Number which seems to be owned by Hiya and it does an okay job but not perfect.
I just set my phone to DnD mode and only allow my contacts to reach me.
Interestingly my home phone (yes I have one) very rarely gets a robo/scam call, like once every other month perhaps. I never use that number to register for anything or give it out, and only occasionally use it to order take-out. It's really there for just to operate the front door buzzer which requires an actual landline with that particular phone number.
I stopped eating dinner. Reduce my robocalls by half.
If you are talking Photoshop alternative on Linux (or free ones for Windows) I'd say skip the GIMP and go straight for Krita. It definitely has the focus more on drawing and art stuff which also makes it a lot nicer to use if you want to make the switch from Adobe's or Corel's offerings.
I use Krita myself; it's really good. 'w'
wolpertinger Do it do vector graphics?
They switched over their vector graphics to SVG completely in version 4.0 so it works... kind of. There is always Inkscape, though
Do you have an tutorial on installing ubuntu on acer nitro laptop
As a head's up to fellow stock Android users, navigate to Phone->Settings->Caller ID and Spam->Filter Suspected Spam Calls. It's a lifesaver. Automatically does not ring your phone when a spam call is suspected. I used to get spam calls all the time, and am no longer bothered by them.
I got the Acer laptop when the 7th gen Intel Core i5 was on sale for $699.99 on Newegg (it was also on sale at Best Buy, but there were problems with my payment on the website). I play PC Building Simulator and Fallout 4 in ok settings and added a 1 TB hard drive to it, hopefully to add more RAM later on. It was my companion at the hospital when I was admitted there, and it did a good job keeping me entertained. It barely fit in my Jansport backpack, but at least it's more portable than my Asus gaming laptop from a couple of years ago (15.6" vs 17").
Honest review!
Robo calls, i use Google Voice and it does a great job at blocking them. It is not 100% but does a good job. And as you said do not answer unknown.
I may be biased because of the mascot, but OpenSuse has always been my go to distro of choice. It is user friendly as well, and for the most part I have not had any issues with any of the computers I've thrown it at.
On dual booting I like to use Windows 7 or 10. I find 7 is more to my liking and for PIN testing Kali is King. But Parrot OS gives it a run for it's money. In fact I think it's better. Parrot is setup more like a PIN testing workstation and you don't start off in root user. Right out of the box Parrot is a more secure OS and comes with software that matches Kali or ups it one. Also make sure to install Windows first. It makes the whole setup much easier...
I got a call yesterday where the phone number displayed was 4 red digits. 8081. A TCP port. A call supposed from someone from Medicare. We didn't get that far. But I think he was trying to sell a back support belt. Or was phishing for financial info. Or worse, taking over my smartphone. (What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.)
A few years ago my niece was bothered by some scam supposedly trying to fix her computer. She put me on the phone with them and I got them to connect to a VM where I was running a keylogger. I played the part needed and got them to sign into their company PayPal account to send me an invoice while they were still connected. After laughing them off the phone, I signed into their PayPal account and started refunding every person that had paid them. Amazingly, it took them 4 months to change the password.
Not so much a problem on mobiles/cells but if you are on a landline and get a robocall make sure when you put the phone down it hangs up properly.
Good to know!
What I do with robo calls or telemarketers I'll answer it and quickly hit mute and enjoy the 10 seconds or so of silence til they hang up. After a few times of that the calls stop.
If you really want to dive into command line go with Ubuntu minimal. It will force you to learn, piss you off, and figure out what framebuffer is.
I love these videos...can you make a new speaker comparison video with the new UE speakers.
Wanted to add my comment about Nomorobo. I've used it for the last year and it has blocked maybe three phone numbers, but I've submitted a couple dozen to them. (I'm on iOS.)
What I really want is something where it doesn't ring unless it is in my address book and instead sends it right to voicemail. DnD is okay, but affects other things as well.
One way I block spammers is by creating a new contact at the beginning of the year such as YouSuckBad 20##. And if I get a call from a spammer I add that number to that contact and set my phone to block any call coming from that contact. It's kind of a pain in the neck but it sometimes works. Somebody needs to develop something that crowdsources these numbers that people can contribute to and then block. It's a catch 22 because some calls that might be legitimate, or reused by a new phone customer, could end up in that database. I think the most important thing you can do is to specifically express in your voicemail message that if you can't identify the number and the caller chooses to NOT leave a message you will potentially block their number going forward.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I've been using elementary OS as my primary desktop OS for over a year now, and can't recommend it enough. I've been using Linux since the crusty old days (started with Slackware back in 1997) and have used tons of distro's in between (used Ubuntu A LOT until they pushed Unity on everyone.)
elementary OS is different in that they have their own "app store" where they have curated apps that are developed specifically to fit in nicely with the OS. They have plenty of apps now to handle most of your daily needs, and you can choose to pay what you want to help support the developers of those apps. They integrate extremely well with the overall look and feel of the OS, as the eOS guys are big on design.
TLDR; +1 for elementary OS.
Early Slackware... dang, that bring back painful memories -Patrick
You're not lying. My first attempt was to download it diskette by diskette (back when Linux was distributed on lettered disk sets) and install it that way. I eventually got one of those CDROM.com multi-cd sets that had all the major distributions on it, but yeah...Linux was rough in the early days.
I still run Slackware64 -current on my main desktop. I use CentOS for my home servers and most of my VMs. Security focused stuff and my primary laptop run Debian Unstable. My portable malware lab laptop runs Qubes. Slackware is alive and kicking.
Oh...I didn't mean to imply Slackware wasn't still around and good. I used it for years, I just moved on. I'm a big fan Patrick Volkerding and what he does with Slackware. Glad you enjoy using it!
Hey. Love your shows, but please do something about the flicker you have with your lights. It gives me a headache to watch!
You can install Gog Galaxy using snap as well. The snap is running WINE so you should be able to install Windows games from Gog. I think it's still in the dev channel though.
Great show a always! ✌
Comparing a laptops 4 cell battery's mAh with a cellphones using only mAh to define how much power it has... that deserves to be in a blooper video :)
I use a VOIP service and it crowd-sources robo calls. I keep adding spam numbers to the robo call blocker. I hardly get any that get through, my service is VOIPO, and costs about $8 month total.
Also Patrick, your living in mass hysteria. Cats and dogs living together
Hello, congratulations on the videos.
Does Ubuntu 18.04 LTS run perfectly on this Acer Nitro 5 notebook?
and there are a lot more calls that never get reported as I have stopped reporting them as I get so many. And the numbers aren't legitimate on caller id anyway. It doesn't matter if its illegal for them to call or not they do it anyway.
I used HiYa for a while but noticed that they wanted access to my contacts list. They download your whole phone book to build thier caller ID network. They promise not to share in their FAQ but how often do companies like this get hacked?
My issue with it is: what right do I have to give out the personal information of the 600+ contacts in my phone? Those people never agreed to give hiya thier numbers.
My System76 KUDU with a 17" display fits nicely in a Everki Titan (EKP120).
Hiya is what I use to automatically answer calls from unknown numbers with 'please text me with your name and number' that filters my calls.
Love this show.
Love kali.
I already am dual booting Windows and Linux. Windows on one hard drive and Linux on another. I have a hard drive caddy with my Windows drive in it on my laptop.
How about the drivers needed? how will you install those in ubuntu? I have Acer Nitro 5- 42 Ryzen 7 . My touchpad wont work
Is the AN515-53-55G9 good for 4K and 1080p home video editing. I have a Samsung 360 camera and Samsung Action director program I would like to use with the AN515-53-55G9.
Peter Parker called us from microsoft once about a virus on the computer. We convinced "Peter" that virus name was Venom..
Does anyone know if the Acer Nitro 5 will run Linux without much of a hiccup? I ordered one online for my son for Christmas and we're Linux users. I don't want him to open it then find out it can't run Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro and the like.
I've noticed a lot of live os's run great but then the install..... Seems to leave off wifi drivers..... I'm not exactly sure why?
In my experience I've found Acer and Asus laptops to be very Linux friendly. Not so much with HP and Lenovo.
No more Calls!
use ooma voip it blocks all spam i have had it a year and not 1 robo call its great
Thanks for the heads up!
Rip diy tryin, been looking for what became of the channel. Not happy.
hey guys i wonder will the Acer Aspire Nitro 5 work with linux mint without windows i'm not a big linux user i'm still learning and i want to buy it but i need to know will it work ok with linux alone
Hey, can I stream games live from this laptop? Thanks
yes... there are "things" in water!
Guess im lucky i dont get any robo calls, i wonder if thats because i still put in my old phone number when i sign up for accounts, which has been turned off for a while lol
So jealous!
I just had an idea to fight phone number spoofing spam calls. What if I got a phone number with an outrageous area code nowhere near where I live.
That way, anytime I got a call from the weird area code, I would know its no one I know and must be a spam call. Would that work?
RUclips engagement comment
put all the scammers in the fema camps and make them work for real.
I disagree strongly with your Linux recommendations. I would not buy a more expensive laptop because it was "Linux" most Linux distros doesn't cost ANYTHING windows costs 200 dollars last I checked. I have never had any problems with loading Linux on a laptop.
I wouldn't put Kali on a laptop as a dual boot. It's not a secure operating system.
I would recommend finding some Linux people to talk to and get you started look for Linux Users groups. I would also recommend starting on Ubuntu, Debian, or Fedora to get started in Linux. Try loading it as a live drive or a VM before jumping in with both feet!
