Im glad you guys are one of the few tech shows that actually have integrity! So many tech shows blow up and gush about kickstarter projects, then their viewers are fucked because they supported it
The paperclip is a funny thing for me. I work for IBM on large Power Parallel systems that span huge clustered environments. There are those rare times on these systems that I have to tell the admin for them that they will need to reset the systems hypervisor that will power down what could be a large clustered frame. I had one admin who was so frustrated by not having one handy that we put one of those old red fire extinguisher boxes with the only thing in it was a paper clip and a sign outside that said "In emergency, break glass". It's kind of a running joke for people who admin these IBM Power systems.
an interesting segment would be if you guys figured out the best refurb phones to still get nowadays. usually i like to get old flagships because they still run great, and you can get a custom firmware to get it up to date if you want
On the OnePlus 6... The speaker may suck for listening to music of videos, BUT for a speaker phone, it is awesome. Plus the 3 finger screenshot is great
I just want to add that Yubikey is more of a Swiss army knife solution. The Yubikey 4 which is FIPS enabled and the Yubikey Neo which is not FIPS enabled but can do NFC interfacing they both have a plethora of security options. You can do time-based authentication (like Google Auth). You can hold your SSL/PGP private keys on there and do smart card functions for signing and encrypting. You can do HMAC authentication. You can even use Yubikey propriety OTP infrastructure and even point your Yubikey to authenticate with a local server for enterprise setups or you can use their Yubicloud service. And of course you know about the U2F option which is picking up speed with Google Services and now Facebook uses U2F. I may have missed some other features but these are what I've messed with so far. One of the advantages of Yubikey over Google Auth is that with Yubikey your private key is stored on the key itself and the contents are heavily encrypted that even if anyone gains physical access they won't be able to recover the private keys. While with Google Auth your private keys are stored on your phone so... yeah you do the math. BTW Yubi Auth IS Google Auth it just stores the private keys on your Yubikey if you are confused about that.
My ifixit kit has a “sim ejector tip” that I use for traditional paper clip duties, though I have found devices with reset buttons to deep for me to depress them so it might be hit or miss.
Oooh Yubikey, I got two of there devices, and I love them. All the multifactor! And yes the 000 tip from iFixit can work but a dedicated little SIM ejector in their protech kit would be nice. Love their kits and guides.
The C.H.I.P. thing was a debacle. They really didn't do that good of a job with the original board either. A LOT of preorders were left out in the cold. There's a lot of info on the ChipCommunity subreddit. I like the little board I got, but I cancelled my other orders once I started to get a weird vibe. Looks like I dodged a bullet. It's really a shame. The specs and form factor combined with built in battery support don't seem to have any real equal out there yet. I was trying to develop a pen testing product that would masquerade as a wall charger. I shelved that for now.
Guys - your audio quality is still not up to par. I know you had mentioned you were working on it and I am giving you feedback. The volume range is vast. When Patrick shouts it's so loud whilst I can barely hear Snubs and low Patricks.
I would agree with the feedback on the audio. the peaks and valleys were too drastic. I love the content though. After a while you got used to it. But I did notice what Elie Z. is talking about.
The 'feature' of a flagship I see none of the tech channels reviewing is longevity. I have a 1+ 3T and its performance is enough to not require an upgrade. It has the same RAM\storage as the base 1+ 6. If you're looking at a 'flagship killer' then you're looking for value which includes how long the device still feels top-of-the-range, as opposed to certain manufacturers who slow down older devices ON PURPOSE.
Andy Aldrich Cool many android phones are not that long lasting. I had an S5 amd it really slowed down after 3 years, and in the 4th year i just upgraded to regular S9. So far there is no lag, battery life sucks
I'm still using my OnePlus 3 ... and see no reason to upgrade yet either. And now they've announced they're going to be pushing Android P to the 3/3T! Two years in, the 3 really hasn't slowed down at all, still feels fresh, and my battery life is still fantastic. Unless I'm shooting a lot of photos/video (camera really eats battery quickly) I normally end my day (6:30am to 12:30am) with well over 40%. I still get weeks where I'll go from Friday morning to Sunday morning without charging, and still not hit the low battery warning at 15%. I'd recommend a OnePlus phone to anyone who doesn't want an iPhone.
See, from the first Mac's with floppy drives, some of us learned you need a paper clip to eject media. Oh, you kids. And the iPhone face reader is supposed to be unique, using an IR sensor for a 3d scan. Not a simple picture scanner.
I have a 6" HTC Z982 6+" phone $120.00. Supports fast charge 4080ma battery, headphone jack, with a wicked long time charge, usb C, Boca effect dual cam. It's not a 1 plus 6 but damn it's $120 bucks and its awesome. I just can't justify the costs any more.
Soon smartphones will run on 16gb ram and 32gb ram, damn smartphones are getting more powerful and efficient, including look at how small they are compared to their cousins laptops

That's awesome! -Patrick

Problem with the whole notch thing is that it sacrifices the dual-speaker feature. Otherwise, it seems like a solid phone

ifixit should make the "paperclip" also a sim removal tool
I use the sim tool tip for resetting my routers.

Cell phone costs are -definitely- out of control.
the sony xz premium has my favourite fingerprint sensor location but i believe it's disabled in the U.S
Btw, I've got the Xiaomi Redmi 5 plus, which is like a budget mid range phone, it's awesome.
Great show! ✌
Would love to see comments on Kickstarters that you are interested in or backed. Not asking for a review or anykind of endorsement.
We can work on that!
why not compare to a Samsung S9?
Umm ifixit already have a small round tip for there screwdriver set that would accomplish the same thing(at least mine does)
I'll try the 000 Philips tip in the Essential Electronics Toolkit, but I think my paperclip addition is seriously useful! [[laughter]]
Patrick
Does your kit not have a bit for sim cards?
TekThing they have a special tip for that for popping Sims and pressing reset buttons it's not a Philips head
Yeah I thought so too
HER HAIR GOT AN UPGRADE

Do these phones work with Verizon?
In the US, you have to use T-Mobile or AT&T
I'm not a fan of notches at all, I prefer Xiaomi phones to be fair, they're awesome for what they are.
use a toothpick its safer then a metal paper clip and why would you need 8 gb of ram in a phone i want more storage then ram
I had a friend break a toothpick off in the wee tiny reset button hole once... kinda scared me off from using toothpicks! -P
then you break out that ifix it tool kit and take it apart to remove the broken tooth pick
Umm, a few people use a lot of tabs. When you are approaching 40 tabs you will welcome the RAM.
Perfect for Kali Nethunter
You’re product reviews are boring. More real tech! Love y’all.
