The keys use MIDI channel 1 and the pads use channel 10. To use drum mode on the pads, change the tracks MIDI In to 10 in the Track Editor section of the Inspector. Any tracks you want controlled only with the keys, use MIDI In channel 1. It's pretty cool, because if you select a keys track and a pads track to record simultaneously, you can play the pads and keys at the same time.

I have used just about all the 25 key midi controllers and I think the nektar impact lx25+ and 49 are very under rated. Especially anyone new to midi controllers, the presets it comes with map really well to logic. It's easy to use in the begining and the more time u have on it the more u learn. I've had the nektar 2+ years and still learning things on it! Novation and native instruments keys good too!
My experience EXACTLY with the MPKmini ... that software that you have to use to program the different programs.. royally suuucck.. and you’re right, the pads are a little.. insensitive 😂 So yes.. thanks, so niiiice to have the walk through you provided! Just returned my mpkmini!

Drum mode sends midi notes on channel 10 so tweak your AU plugin to catch notes from channel 10 or all channels or change note channel with Scripter midi effect.

Novation are really missing a trick here. I initially stayed away from their keyboards because I am a Logic user and they really are perceived as an Ableton club member. So I got an M-Audio oxygen pro, which was claimed to work seamlessly with Logic. It doesn’t. To cut a long story short, I exchanged it for a Novation Launchkey mk3 25 (the mini’s big brother) and I am super pleased. Novation rocks. The mini is on my wishlist for mobile production 😉.
I looked into these for years. I'm a midi nube! I recently switched to Logic (From Reaper). I'm amazed. Having so much fun! I've had it about a month I think. I've been notating with mouse clicks and it's really cumbersome. Really looking forward to using it. I did a few muck around pieces and it was tremendously fun.
I'm with Logic since 10 years and I have a love-hate relationship with it - especially when it comes to Midi it is a nightmare. I used to chase controllers that actually work with Logic - they all claim to do but lots do actually fail in my opinion - so be warned! However, a few years passed since my last disappointment with the Impact LX25+ so I'm amazed to see that the Novation actually comes with a Logic script. Might look into that as well.

@@DjTomcat14 yeh I think that's how I am too, cos I don't have a midi keyboard I recently just did a whole orchestra score for my chorus (over 20 instruments) with just my computer keyboard as a controller lol. Its a pain to add in velocity after. But yeh I think I'm set on this launchkey mini now, thankyou!

Would you know why the Launchkey Mini MK3 isn't showing up in Logic's control surface setup window? I've already reset control surface defaults and installed the script from Novation, but I can't get Logic to show anything other than "Launchkey Mini" from Focusrite, which doesn't do anything to with my MK3.

I have a huge problem he last month with my Akai MPK Mini mk3.I use Logic Pro X and when i connect it in the setup menu it shows up the device....everything ok BUT.....when input/output ports are in MPK Mini mk3 the keyboard doesnt work ,and some keys minimize/maximize the interface of DAW.Only the pads play sounds.What is going on please help me!!

I'm having some issues as well with the new logic 10.5, I had the 10.3 and it was working fine. I updated it, and some of the functions won't work properly. Actually, the device was note installed anymore after the update, I had to reinstall it, now it's there, but the functions appear to not work fine. I'll keep trying to see what it is.
Thanks for this, I’ve been considering the arturia minilab but it’s missing the chord and scale features of the novation that I would love to have as a novice player looking to focus on songwriting. My one concern about the novation is the nobs not being endless like the arturia and even the akai. What happens when your hardware nob is at one end and the software nob is at the other? I can see this becoming annoying and messing with the creative flow. How much of an issue is this for you?

I've switched from Ableton to Logic because of the MPE support. With 10.5 updates I can basically do everything i did in Ableton (still miss the Instrument rack tho). However, I notice one thing, it seems that the Launchkey's arp tempo isn't synced with Logic's BPM (in Ableton, the tempo knob does absolutely nothing), and IMO it's making it harder to make quantized arps. Do you know how to fix that??

The novation launch key doesn't show up when you are setting up a new control surface. They only have Novation's launch pads. Do you know how to get around that.

I'm not seeing the control surfaces feature on my Logic Pro X menu. I see "Preferences" and "Key Command Presets" but no "Control Surfaces" in between. Any suggestions?
I'm actually having the same trouble with Drum mode, but it's related to the input and output ports in Logic. If you set the input and outputs to LKmini DAW Port, the pads in drum mode are not responding, and if you set the input and output to LKmini MIDI Port, the pads in drum mode respond but then session mode is completely blocked, same for shift+ARP option and the solo/mute button. Now, I know there's a custom mode (replacement for drum mode) but it is just frustrating as everything (session and drum mode) was working fine 2 days ago (when set to DAW port).
Could not agree more. I had a gen 1 (?) ~2010 akai mini the software/mapping was garbage then also. I actually was in conversation with Akai tech support and they basically said there was notihing they could do after an Apple OS update rendered the already bad akai s/w obsolete. And the pad response is terrible. I have no idea other than the luster of the MPC why the pads get such great reviews. I found your vid bc I'm looking at the novation for use w logic

One question: at 10:29 when you are talking about how to map the pads to drums I can see the Drum kit part names next to the piano roll. Is this standard feature in Logic? Hi Yon. Thanks for your comment, glad I could help. Yes, every drum kit in logic will show the kit parts like that in the piano roll. They keep a similar pattern through different drum kits (hi-hats, kicks, snares, are usually always in the same note for all drum kits). You can also use the Drum Machine Designer in Logic and assign the pads from Logic itself.

I was getting an orange exclamation sign on the Launchkey icon while trying to add it as a Control surface. @@apollossoundgarden667 I have a question that you might have encountered: I'm having some trouble trying to map the midi knobs to Logic parameters using CONTROL SURFACES=>LEARN ASSIGNMENT. It is very buggy and crashes Logic quite often. I saw some videos from people using other midi controllers and seems to be easier. Even though I found a way to map the knobs for s single case use (since that will lock that knob to that only use) I'm looking for a more practical solution like the behavior in Ableton. Using Ableton, no matter which mode we are in: Session, Drum, Custom or Device, the knobs will map one to one to each of the devices/effects installed in the rack without doing any mapping which is quite handy. In Logic I noticed I can use the knobs for some amps (Gain,Bass,Mid,etc) but they don't do anything for example on an Echo effect. I can use the LEARN to train it for the Echo but then I lose it for the guitar Amp. Have you run into this issue? and would you please a solution to share? I will ask Novation as well. Thanks in advance !
If anyone figured out how to get drums working with the pads can you please let me know. The web based thing seems to work in the video but some people in the comments are saying it's not working for them and I'd prefer to be able to do it in Logic. Everything about the Launchkey Mini mk3 looks good to me but the ability to do finger drumming on the pads through Logic is kind of my main selling point. I'm also a total beginner so I'm reluctant to buy if it's really complicated or difficult to set up.
You have to go on the Novation website, create an account, insert your product + serial number. Then, you'll see a page like Apollo is showing at 3:33. You download the Logic plugin, install it. Only then you plug the Novation Launchkey and you restart Logic. You keep on following instructions given by Apollo, and you're done. I had the same problem than you, but now it works
So drum mode totally doesn't work with the Launchkey Mini Mk3 right? :O That's a bummer. Or is it only in device mode? I wonder if the pads map to things that could be CC assigned? By any chance do you know if changing the midi channel of the device, like as in changing it from on device and not Components, also change the midi channel of the knobs? And pads if in Ableton? I've read that in Drum mode on the Mini MK2 they do change as well. And my LK 61 does change midi channel on the knobs on the fly.

@@apollossoundgarden667 it changes the midi channel of the device! The keyboard should be changed, what I'm not sure of are the knobs and on which modes they are changed. The midi channel from 1 to 16 depends on which pad you check :D You can verify this on stuff like Midi Monitor or anything that can see MIDI data
@@apollossoundgarden667 the midi channel change shows if used in Logic, but in Ableton, it doesn't really multiple midi channels on one track. I found different midi channels on one track in Logic useful for making the most out of knobs :D It's like 8 knobs x 16 channels per track!
I can help you get the session mode working, but it disables the drum pad like his is in the video. However, the lights on drum mode get disabled as soon as you load the Logic mapping from Novation anyway. So, I can also help you map your custom pads out to make up for it.
Great video thanks for doing it. It has been a great help to me. One thing that I don’t seem to be able to do is control the master volume in Logic when multiple tracks are playing. Can you do this via the Launchkey mini? I can control the volume of individual tracks but not the master. Thanks

@@apollossoundgarden667 It seems to be some issue with drum mode and session mode colliding. I figured out how to switch between the two working separately. So weird.. just let us program the entire controller ourselves!
Hi. The custom mode should work on garageband as well. I haven't tried it with the nobs, and other functions. Good idea, I'll give it a try, and maybe post a new video about it.
On Logic Pro version 10.6.2, I had to go into Logic Pro -> Preferences -> Advanced Tools and enable "Show Advanced Tools" and “Control Surfaces” in order to get the left sidebar of the setup window to populate so I could configure the input/output ports. Apparently 10.6 defaults to "simple" mode and you have to opt-in to this stuff. Hope this helps someone!
I recently got a akai mpk249 and after an hour of using it I realized damn I shld have gotten the komplete 49 or novation. The mpk249 doesn't even have a control editor, wtf I know right. Normally u wld think the bigger more expensive model wld have as much or more control and software but that's not the case at all. There is very little to no support for the 249 on amy of the mpc software. But after like 2 weeks I finally got it mapped like 80% like I want it, smh! Might be the last akai product I ever buy and I'm a long time akai user!
I have both. Minilab is a lot heavier and miss arp and chords features and I don't really like knobs behavior on minilab, its kinda "slow" and you have to rotate it like 500° or more to go from 0 to 127. I also didn't manage to get knobs work in Logic but maybe I just missed something. On the other side minilab feels a way more durable and solid, keys are better, etc.
ijsthee I think novation really tried to make this work with current daws obviously ableton but also with logic into consideration it's even supported in the manual
The pads do work for some drum instruments. It depends on how they are mapped. But I'm glad to see how you mapped them using custom programs in novation software. Since there are so many drum kits and they are mapped to different notes I was wondering if we could remap the drum kits to the notes in the pad instead of mapping the pads to the drum kit notes.

@@govoli1922 I halfway figured this out, but it seems you either get to choose between Session Mode working or Drum Mode working. I had them both working and then it went back to just one at a time. However, do your lights work on drum mode? Mine do not.
I haven't tried the MK3, hopefully they fixed the interface issue. I saw the pads on the Akai mk3 are also quite different, they use the same pads as some of the well known Akai drum machines..

hmmm I must've done something wrong. I only have few lights that light up when I press "shift" and I can't hear the keys, when I'm playing.
The up and down arrows next to the Launchkey Mini option are not showing for some reason so I can't configure the input/output options.

I did this and my keyboard stopped working :,( anyone else?? Please help (never downloaded the logic driver but my keyboard has always been fine..i did it to use the record/stop buttons and now none of my keys or pads work in logic)
I've switched from Ableton to Logic because of the MPE support. With 10.5 updates I can basically do everything i did in Ableton (still miss the Instrument rack tho). However, I notice one thing, it seems that the Launchkey's arp tempo isn't synced with Logic's BPM (in Ableton, the tempo knob does absolutely nothing), and IMO it's making it harder to make quantized arps. Do you know how to fix that??

@@wang2194 nope! actually using the akai mpk mini mk3 mostly now with my ipad mini, but also playing around with a launchpad mini.
@@theysamtheirs after much investigation, I found that alot of the issues can be fixed by changing the mode under control preferences. 95% working now. 👍

The novation launch key doesn't show up when you are setting up a new control surface. They only have Novation's launch pads. Do you know how to get around that.

I'm not seeing the control surfaces feature on my Logic Pro X menu. I see "Preferences" and "Key Command Presets" but no "Control Surfaces" in between. Any suggestions?
you need to enable advanced tools under Preferences>Advanced
does the novation installer do the software setup for you?
I'm actually having the same trouble with Drum mode, but it's related to the input and output ports in Logic.
If you set the input and outputs to LKmini DAW Port, the pads in drum mode are not responding,
and if you set the input and output to LKmini MIDI Port, the pads in drum mode respond but then session mode is completely blocked, same for shift+ARP option and the solo/mute button.
Now, I know there's a custom mode (replacement for drum mode) but it is just frustrating as everything (session and drum mode) was working fine 2 days ago (when set to DAW port).
Could not agree more. I had a gen 1 (?) ~2010 akai mini the software/mapping was garbage then also. I actually was in conversation with Akai tech support and they basically said there was notihing they could do after an Apple OS update rendered the already bad akai s/w obsolete. And the pad response is terrible. I have no idea other than the luster of the MPC why the pads get such great reviews. I found your vid bc I'm looking at the novation for use w logic

One question: at 10:29 when you are talking about how to map the pads to drums I can see the Drum kit part names next to the piano roll. Is this standard feature in Logic? Does it work for all Drums or is something you made yourself? Thanks again
Hi Yon. Thanks for your comment, glad I could help. Yes, every drum kit in logic will show the kit parts like that in the piano roll. They keep a similar pattern through different drum kits (hi-hats, kicks, snares, are usually always in the same note for all drum kits). You can also use the Drum Machine Designer in Logic and assign the pads from Logic itself.

I was getting an orange exclamation sign on the Launchkey icon while trying to add it as a Control surface. I found this thread discussions.apple.com/thread/250866428 that helped me to get rid of the problem and install it. Then I could follow your steps nicely. Again thanks for this great video

@@apollossoundgarden667 I have a question that you might have encountered: I'm having some trouble trying to map the midi knobs to Logic parameters using CONTROL SURFACES=>LEARN ASSIGNMENT. It is very buggy and crashes Logic quite often. I saw some videos from people using other midi controllers and seems to be easier. Even though I found a way to map the knobs for s single case use (since that will lock that knob to that only use) I'm looking for a more practical solution like the behavior in Ableton. Using Ableton, no matter which mode we are in: Session, Drum, Custom or Device, the knobs will map one to one to each of the devices/effects installed in the rack without doing any mapping which is quite handy. In Logic I noticed I can use the knobs for some amps (Gain,Bass,Mid,etc) but they don't do anything for example on an Echo effect. I can use the LEARN to train it for the Echo but then I lose it for the guitar Amp. Have you run into this issue? and would you please a solution to share? I will ask Novation as well. If anyone figured out how to get drums working with the pads can you please let me know. The web based thing seems to work in the video but some people in the comments are saying it's not working for them and I'd prefer to be able to do it in Logic. Everything about the Launchkey Mini mk3 looks good to me but the ability to do finger drumming on the pads through Logic is kind of my main selling point. I'm also a total beginner so I'm reluctant to buy if it's really complicated or difficult to set up.
when I go into control surfaces all of them are in italic and cannot be chosen. did you have to do anything specific to get them usable?
Hi, I just installed the plugin and it was available in the list. I'm not sure what is your problem, have you tried contacting Logic Support?
You have to go on the Novation website, create an account, insert your product + serial number. Then, you'll see a page like Apollo is showing at 3:33. You download the Logic plugin, install it. Only then you plug the Novation Launchkey and you restart Logic. You keep on following instructions given by Apollo, and you're done. I had the same problem than you, but now it works

By any chance do you know if changing the midi channel of the device, like as in changing it from on device and not Components, also change the midi channel of the knobs? And pads if in Ableton? I've read that in Drum mode on the Mini MK2 they do change as well. And my LK 61 does change midi channel on the knobs on the fly.
Hi, thanks for the suggestion, I will try that. For me it totally doesn't work (in Logic), but to be honest I got used to using the custom mode. I've created the drum set up I like, so it's working for me like that.

@@apollossoundgarden667 it changes the midi channel of the device! The keyboard should be changed, what I'm not sure of are the knobs and on which modes they are changed.
The midi channel from 1 to 16 depends on which pad you check :D You can verify this on stuff like Midi Monitor or anything that can see MIDI data
@@apollossoundgarden667 the midi channel change shows if used in Logic, but in Ableton, it doesn't really multiple midi channels on one track.
I found different midi channels on one track in Logic useful for making the most out of knobs :D It's like 8 knobs x 16 channels per track!

It does not allow me to use the Solo, Play, Record buttons. Do you know what the solution is? Do I use Logic Pro Version 10.4?
I can help you get the session mode working, but it disables the drum pad like his is in the video. However, the lights on drum mode get disabled as soon as you load the Logic mapping from Novation anyway. So, I can also help you map your custom pads out to make up for it.

If those buttons are not working, it sounds like the pluggin wasn't installed successfully in Logic. Maybe try downloading it again from Novation.

Great video thanks for doing it. It has been a great help to me. One thing that I don’t seem to be able to do is control the master volume in Logic when multiple tracks are playing. Can you do this via the Launchkey mini? I can control the volume of individual tracks but not the master. Thanks
Hi, Glad I could help. For me, if the 8th track is empty, the last knob on your Launchkey mini controls the master volume ;)

Go with the 37 key version,both are fine and have had updates across the board,plus novation does firmware updates

I still cannot use the "Drum" mode. But I wouldn't say I have a problem. The custom modes work fine and the pads work great!

Not sure about the mk2 interface. But I remember seeing some video talking about the 49 mk3
On Logic Pro version 10.6.2, I had to go into Logic Pro -> Preferences -> Advanced Tools and enable "Show Advanced Tools" and “Control Surfaces” in order to get the left sidebar of the setup window to populate so I could configure the input/output ports. Apparently 10.6 defaults to "simple" mode and you have to opt-in to this stuff. Hope this helps someone!

I recently got a akai mpk249 and after an hour of using it I realized damn I shld have gotten the komplete 49 or novation. The mpk249 doesn't even have a control editor, wtf I know right. Normally u wld think the bigger more expensive model wld have as much or more control and software but that's not the case at all. There is very little to no support for the 249 on amy of the mpc software. But after like 2 weeks I finally got it mapped like 80% like I want it, smh! Might be the last akai product I ever buy and I'm a long time akai user!

Hi, I did not test the arturia minilab mk2. I have seen good reviews on other channels though.
I have both. Minilab is a lot heavier and miss arp and chords features and I don't really like knobs behavior on minilab, its kinda "slow" and you have to rotate it like 500° or more to go from 0 to 127. I also didn't manage to get knobs work in Logic but maybe I just missed something. On the other side minilab feels a way more durable and solid, keys are better, etc.
ijsthee I think novation really tried to make this work with current daws obviously ableton but also with logic into consideration it's even supported in the manual

The pads do work for some drum instruments. It depends on how they are mapped. But I'm glad to see how you mapped them using custom programs in novation software. Since there are so many drum kits and they are mapped to different notes I was wondering if we could remap the drum kits to the notes in the pad instead of mapping the pads to the drum kit notes.

@@govoli1922 I halfway figured this out, but it seems you either get to choose between Session Mode working or Drum Mode working. I had them both working and then it went back to just one at a time. However, do your lights work on drum mode? Mine do not.
I agree. Akai mapping on the MKII is fucking terrible! I hear the new MKIII is way better, but still lacks designated transport controls...
I haven't tried the MK3, hopefully they fixed the interface issue. I saw the pads on the Akai mk3 are also quite different, they use the same pads as some of the well known Akai drum machines..
