World most dangerous airport. UPHILL SHORT RUNWAY.
Pilatus PC-12 flying from Parma to Couchevel.
This is considered one of the World's most dangerous airport, due to its very short runway with a slope of 18% and the fact thet it's sorrounded by mountains.
A friend trained there for his French mountain rating some 20 years ago.
The runway is steeper than the maximum climb-out angle of a Cessna 172, so you're supposed to land at, and maintain full power until you reach the apron at the top. On one occasion he forgot, and instinctively throttled back and got stuck on the runway before the "summit". Fortunately a number of people rushed over and helped push him the last bit to the top. Thank goodness for Cessna struts!
Thank you for sharing this experience 😎
Re the 172: That makes sense. And I believe it. The Pilatus PC-12 on the other hand is a powerful SEL plane designed with such operations in mind. A Cessna 172... not so much... to say the least... in fact its performance envelope is on the edge of insufficient for this altitude, would be if it wasn't for the cold dense air. Being this video is being billed as "...most dangerous airport landing....", seems the better video in that regard would be the one of the 172. Fact is, the most dangerous airport landing is the one where the pilot is not competent to perform it! Regardless of the particular airport involved. I'm getting very sick of over hyped bullshit
At least the runway doesn't end in a rock wall, like Lukla.
Just my thought.
It does...
Under the snow there are rocks
There's a wall, you just can't see it because of the snow. The paved surface is 1762 ft, and the wall is about 40 ft from that. I guess it's not a wall, it's about a 45 degree angle. Fortunately you land going uphill 212 ft from one end to the other.
My landing on Catalina Island, California was spookiest for me. This looks insane. Well done.
Thanks 😎
Nice landing. Lukla always seems to get the headlines but this is one I didn’t know about. There are some very challenging strips in New Guinea worth taking a look at including some challenging tropical weather and very remote, unsealed strips.
Lukla Nepal is the world's most dangerous airport. I'm a licensed pilot and I've been in and out of Lukla. There is absolutely no room for error.
While I agree in many respects with the dangers of Lukla, I still consider the approach and landing at Chagual in Peru as being the most dangerous. With that one you can't even see the airport, as you're descending yet still flying between the mountains, until the last mile. You HAVE to know what you're doing! You finally see the airport as you are making a 45 degree turn to final and 20 seconds from touchdownl!!
ruclips.net/video/EersrIjC8cQ/видео.html
You are not wrong about chagual! Good lord!
@Michal Lašan Hi Michal! Thanks for the reply.
I guess it all boils down to what matters most to you. You are quite correct that the runway at Chagual is much longer than Lukla, is flat and does have a "go-around" possibility. However at least at Lukla you can see the airport from miles away and because of this, at least up to a point about 3 miles away (?, my guesstimate), the aircraft CAN safely abort the landing.
But when you have the terrain avoidance system screaming that you're out of your mind for most of the approach, my vote is for Chagual as being the trickiest and therefore the most dangerous. Frankly, I wouldn't want to fly EITHER of them!
Cheers!
@@MikeWiggins1235711 But...Chagual has a 1205 meters flat runway and the altitude is 1,200 meters. It makes a big difference for the available power.
Difficult but not the most dangerous by far. I all depends of the aircraft, meteo and skill. Good landing!
Have you seen the documentary of the dangerous airports in Indonesia?
Hey it's the ski resort! I miss the old multicolored Poma gondola. May it rest in peace.
Flying this in VR in Microsoft flight sim is amazing!
Natural beautiful mountains scenery and excellent landings experience congratulations 🙏
perfect approach and landing . great weather though . wouldnt like to try bad weather landing . no instruments on strip . sod that .
The damned fish-eye lens used to photograph the approach and landing made it harder than hell to see anything.
The only thing I saw that made the approach dangerous was the the trees on the approach end.
And the running water sound is damm annoying....
@@tangcanada9381 Sounds like some guy pissing in a toilet...
"Wow, that was a tough landing!"
Flying Cowboys: "Hold my beer....."
In bad weather, people may change their underwear after the landing.
Beautiful mountains!
I agree! Thank you for your comment
That's the most amazing landing I have ever seen.
Thanks😎
Having landed on both this runway & Lukla (8 times) i still think Lukla is by far more terrifying, either landing or taking off. Although the very first time taking off was pure terrifying). This one is more beautiful & you must have got some great video in the colder months. Thanks for posting & 1 new subscriber. Greetings from Sydney, Australia. Not much snow down here.
Very nice approach and Beautiful surroundings!! I liked it so much i had 2 check this place out on Google Earth!! Thanks a lot !!
Thank you very much for your comment 😎
valerio.l105 is
I hate flying anyway, SO watched this with my eyes closed.
most dangerous dangerous airport landing is in la paz bolivia
Don't understand the urinating sound at the beginning and end of video? 😐
Really great flying!
When the captain applauds itself. You know thats no easy landing..
"Itself"!? No, he is a natural-born man, with a big, brassy pair; make no mistake!
If the pilot felt the need to applaud himself then he had no fucking business landing there in the first place.
@Leigh Hobson That's cool... there was a time I'd of had no problem with that:) Edit: Don't understand confidence much do you... no, not ego, just assuredness born of demonstrated ability... if one doesn't have that, wtf are they risking passenger's lives for.... Try to keep it real
I don't want to take anything away from this landing. It seem to me that there is plenty of room to abort landing in a emergency. Unlike Lukla airport in Nepal where one end of the runway is a sheer drop and the other is the mountain. Look it up...
It was mentioned the landing strip is at an angle of 18,6%
Many planes can't climb faster than that, so with an attempted go-around, they would smash into the mountains ahead.
I don't think Lukla is as steep tho. I may be wrong
@@karlsjunior466 Lukla is 3,000 ft higher so it makes a big difference in terms of available power, especially with normally aspirated engine. You need turbo-compressed or turbine engines to have more resources in case of missed approach. I have many landings in Courchevel and it's not difficult as long as you follow certain procedures. There are many altiports or altisurfaces with steeper runways without the hard surface you find in Courchevel, Mégève or Alpe d'Huez and many have no missed approach procedures when on final. Glacier landings are much more technical due to absence of familiar man-made objects (trees, houses or poles) but you learn how to read the snow condition and feel the ground effect when you flare before touchdown. Also peripheral vision helps you assess your height over the landing area.
Truly spectacular & amazing video.landing was brilliant.
Thanks😎
sounded like everyone aboard expected to die...
Not going to lie, I'd have my eyes closed, (as a passenger, not the pilot, lol) as we approached where the runway could be seen. Then once down on the runway, would marvel at the beauty surrounding me : )
Exactly, thank you for your comment 😎
Mon Dieu !!! Very nice smooth landing !!! The passengers were speaking Italian ? Bella vacanca :)
I think Nepal airport is more dangerous. It has about half that runway and a drop of a cliff at the end of the runway.
Lukla in Nepal is almost the same length
Chad Snow I agree I flew in to Kathmandu Airport in a twin engine propellor airplane in the early seventies, squeaky bottom time!
I think you mean Lukla mate.Kathmandu is on a plateau East of the city
richard brooks oh yes I remember bus ride into Kathmandu the Royal Air Nepal used HS748s in the 70s that’s what I flew in from Patna. Thanks for the airport name. I was a bit of a hippy in those days so memory a bit hazy!
I think more people have been killed at Lukla than here.
Other people: I mean it’s not that hard
Pilot: Try it...
Awesome 😎😎
Thanks😎
@@thefreedriver89 🙏🙏
Well f**k me pink and call me Rosie, that's one hell of an approach! I didn't even spot the the runway, sorry landing strip, until 4.00'. Hats off!
Nope,I’ll walk thank you.
Aircraft carrier pilots are ideal for such runways.
they have less room on touch, but more room after
Show us another clip of landing there on a windy day with turbulence off the mountains and a strong crosswind - that would be interesting.
Why is there no go around procedure here? It looks like there is plenty of room for it. Didn't look like any mountains ahead.
This is a real deal freaky airport. No go around once you start in on the approach.......land uphill and takeoff like a ski jump downhill.....loads o fun........
Is it allowed for people to visit cockpit to take videos? In that case the pilot door should not be available
It’s a private plane
Great Landing!
Thanks 😎
I couldn't even see the runway on this video till 4:50 into the video. NO WAY I'd ever go there on an airplane, even if I were young and healthy again.
Looks like no building there, not even an outdoor toilet. Land there and you are on your own. Good luck.
@@WornoutRNPARAMEDIC nah it‘s in the middle of a ski resort
Most bush pilots I know: "And...?"
I mean they basically don't have a runway half the time
@@BlueOvals24 Plus they deal with high and hot density altitudes (5,700' is a LOW comfortable pattern altitude around here). And they consider an upward slope a benefit for shorter landings and quicker takeoffs.
Bella l'euforia in cabina. Grazie della condivisione!
Grazie a te per il tuo commento 😎
You probably dont care at all but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Abel Gunnar instablaster ;)
@Will Otto I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and im in the hacking process now.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Will Otto It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my ass !
Having spent a season skiing in Couchevel, I was always amazed at how pilots landed on this runaway. Great skiing area.
No more dangerous than flying into Lukla - Everest
Forget about the runway. What a view!
Ahah very nice sorroundings😎
Very nice landing!!!! Now what? Go skiing?
Exactly 😎
I heard Tenzing Hillary was the worst. Then I heard of grassy field airports in Indonesia were dangerous.. short runway, sometimes muddy, and drop off or boulder at the end.
Of course there are less conventional airports which are more dangerous 😉
I thought the number were wrong on this until I looked it up because 5700 feet is low, below Colorado Springs which is not in the mountains. Colorado Springs is over 6000 ft in elevation and sits just below the foot hills of the Rockies or Pikes Peak which stands at 14,000+ ft!
What would you say about landing at Daocheng Yading Airport in China (14,418 ft high with a 14,000 ft runway) or Qamdo Banda Airport also in China (14,219 ft high with a 18,045 ft runway) 1,000 ft higher than La Paz in Bolivia. You increase your take-off and landing rolls by 100% in standard pressure and temperature.
Fantastico
it is a serious matter landing at this airport! danger all over! God Bless all Pilots!
As a pilot, I’ll rely on my training, experience and currency on type, rather than an imaginary sky pixie friend!
Alhamdulillah, safe journey and landing
Bell’atterraggio, complimenti!
Grazie 😎
I take it no night landings?
I don't want him as my pilot. He's celebrating when he made that successful landing.lmao
a passenger was celebrating , not the pilot
It's Courchevel not 'Couchevel'. Great landing.
What's there that someone would build an airstrip and keep it plowed. Having cheated death a few times myself, I congratulate the pilot on an excellent land but have to worry about his sanitary. I didn't have the runway insight until about two minutes prior to landing. Good job. I hope you played the lottery the first chance you got.
Its for the rich and famous to get to their SKI resort without having the to suffer the long drive. As an aside its the airport used in the James Bond film where he steals the jet fighter.
Thanks
Looks hairy but title is clickbait as usual. Lukla Airport in Nepal has Couchlevel beat for scary by some way.
It didn't appear to have a high level of danger at all...no more so than a ton of other places...
Try Mt Cook on the South Island of NZ....
Nice landing, but why build an airstrip there?
F
France is really develop country. This airport is for rich people.
Did you record the video with a walkman?
My phone was leaking water when I watched this.
So was my laptop for some odd reason, but only and the beginning and the end. Go figure.
Even hard to see runway. Nice landing.
Thank you 😎
Hard to see indeed - I couldn't make it out until he was on short final.
Nice landing
Thanks😎
I disagree with the caption. The most dangerous airport in the world is Montgomery County Airport (KGAI) on a windless sunny Saturday afternoon in the summer
what's that noise at the end? Somebody in the bathroom?
How much is bus fare? ...
Hallo, warum wird die Landebahn nicht verlängert? , und die vielen Bäume keine 100 Meter vor dem Beginn der Landebahn abgeholzt?
They are italian like me, they speak Italian.
Piece of cake. How is that harder than Lukla?
You cannot pay me enough to sit in your flight to wherever this is.
I would love to fly there, go sking. Big bucks
Leadville ,Colorado airport is at 9927 ft. They give you a Certificate for landing there.
Wow! I couldn't see the airport or runway until finals.
this is way i always jump out off that amazing PILATUS
Ji
What country is this ?
France
Lukla, Koala Lumpur is the most dangerous no go around, your committed miles away no escape once in the valley
That was talent that landed that plane.
I vote for a landing on the Ruth Glacier, on skis, Mt McKinley, Alaska
Was that slight bump caused by the weight of the pilot's b..ls? Scary.
Ahah nice one😎
The nose landing gear must take a beating
Fantastico!!
Dangerous no doubt. But Indonesian Susie Air bush flying was way more dangerous.
Wow
Wow! Disspointed because I could not see the aeroplane for size etc. Presume it was a singled engine small 4 seater or more.
It looks pretty much like Santa Fe, NM airport.
COOL
Thanks😎
Just curious, what's the attraction that draws people here. Is it mountain climbing, research or something else?
It is a winter resort. We go there skiing.
@@adrien33862 Nice.
Not for all the tea in China.
Forget that Dude 😜☺️
😉
КРАСОТА ! СПАСИБО ПИЛОТАМ ! ЕЩЕ ХОЧУ В КУРШАВЕЛЬ !
Remarkable landing, excellent skills!
Thank you for your comment 😎
Ok...... i had a hunting trip in Alaska where a bush pilot skipped a piper cub with no flotws on it to slow it down to land on a gravel bar in a river that might have been 20 feet wide and 50 feet long. After we got out and unloaded all our stuff he took off in like 20 feet. This is childs play. Oh the river was according to my GPS 7300 feet.
Miał IDEALNE warunki - bezwietrzne- to jedno z najbardziej niebezpiecznych lotnisk na Świecie .
I don’t even see the runway the arrow is pointing at.
It's a good job they land uphill. If they tried from the other direction, they'd be off like Eddie the Eagle.
An 18% grade on a runway? I can hardly do that on a bicycle. But it should do wonders for your landing distance.
At the end of the video I can hear the pilot pee his pants.
Just viewing itself is like peeing great effort by pilots 🙏
The pilot is good as a bad is the cameraman.
That was originally a 360-degree video... what is shown is the front camera view
pilota con le palle..ottimo video
Grazie 😎
Super !! :-)
Thanks 😎
Is lukla not the hardest?
