She's like: "I dunno what to do" in every scene. Just get on with it already sheeesh. Also... Writers left nothing to be unexpected. Humanitarian help? Yep. Dude from the bar will ride a dragon? Yup. Daemon is playing a tough guy to get people on his side to then give them to Raenyra? Sure. Damn, the Game of thrones has you on the edge of the seat with each scene being something unexpected. Here? It just feels lazy..
I’m not fully sure what you mean on that one. The season WAS the war. We are currently watching the war. Wars are mostly people talking about what to do next, and then a big battle, and then more plotting about the next battle.
@@vannski9441 he doesn't need to, he has addressed it in other videos, also he didn't say "kids should" he said "kids can start thinking about it and then do it at 18"
Which is generally what GoT did with their finales but GoT always had that killer Episode 9 that blew your socks off and resolved the season plotlines.
GOT finales we’re similar, but I don’t think that was bad. In GoT, usually episode 9 (I’d argue episode 8 for season 5) was the “big” episode while the last episode was mostly an aftermath episode that set up the next season. (Exception of season 4 and 6 which I think had 2 “big” episodes back to back)

Feel like people are misinterpreting Charlie's point about fast travel. It's not about distance, but how easy it apparently is to go between Dragonstome and King's Landing without suspicion. These are two places at war and would be constantly alert for spies and assassins but like 50 characters move back and forth without issue.
Yeah he could've phrased it better instead of talking about "fast travel" bc his main complaint was about the ease of which characters could enter castles and cities which are meant to be on high alert.
@@twoteencarat5333while I will agree with you that a city watchmen acting as a rat at her is rather strange, the fact of them just walking into the red keep isn’t far fetched, the whole reason daemon picked someone from the rat catchers guild was so he’d have someone who could sneak in and out easily
@@PajamaSamRealah yes. One is an opinion of a show. The other were allegations that he commented on once ava commented on them. Just like everything else.
To the complaint about time travel I don’t think Charlie realizes just how close Kings Landing is to Dragonstone. They are literally neighboring islands
yes and no. Kings Landing is a port city and close to Dragonstone but they're suppose to be very far away from each other (i think someonw mapped it out to being like 1000 miles away from each other). the fact that alicent and rhaenyra are able to travel that distance willy nilly doesnt make any sense. in season 1 there were multiple ship scenes to showcase the distance between King's Landing and Dragonstone (and Driftmark as well) but the writers forgot that this season I guess.
@seethelightwhenthelightisb6259 that isnt the issue. what is is jace teleporting to the twins, and then coming back in the same episode. compared to rhaenyras 1 and a half episode trip to kings landing.
the one thing i disagree with about charlie with is the “fast traveling”, it takes all season for the north to get to the twins, and the lannisters to make it to harrenhall. dragon stone and kings landing are next to each other, dragon stone is closer to kings landing than literally any other location so it’s super easy to get there. they also show this in the ending of episode 7 when one character flies from kings landing directly to dragonstone
and my opinion the most egregious is the speed at which Syrax and Seasmoke make it to Harrenhal. Dragons is NOT close to the Gods eye. At least in comparison to Kings Landing
yeah i mean you can tell when someones just watching it as a show and has fuck all a clue what is actually happening and has never read a single one of the books. people that dont know shit about the story dont need to be reviewing the show, like this whole review is cringe to watch.
@@ibrahimtall6209 It was an 8 episode season which forgot it wasn't a 10 episode season. Also, because season 1 made use of time skips quite a bit, it made this season feel even slower, and a lot of the parts they slowed down for didn't feel they deserved it.
Alicent: no one listens to me and everyone is mean :( Rhaenyra: no one listens to me and everyone is mean :( Daemon: doing edibles supplied by a Scottish goth girl and tripping balls in a haunted hotel room. Aegon, Aemond, and Rhaenys: excuse us while we actually advance the plot. Cole and Gwayne: man, we're friggin useless now, huh? Otto: I am apparently imprisoned now
Yeah wtf happened with Otto? He's supposed to have gone home and we then randomly get a shot of him languishing in a cell. A bit poorly executed that. I think at one point it was mentioned that no one had seen him for a while? Hard to remember
@@Paul-xu6gtThey screwed Jace this season. At this point in the book he's one of the most active players. Arranging many pacts on Rhaenyra's behalf. We should have got more time with him in the North (important later), and he also treated with Jeyne Arran (another character more interesting in the books).
Jace was helping advance the plot for a few episodes there as well. Wish they would've spent more time with the actual productive characters, showing each side recruit their allies and creating new alliances, instead of spending half the episodes with Alicent, Rhaenyra and Daemon wandering around either complaining or tripping out. The supporting cast would've made for more interesting storylines than the main characters this season. (Not counting the bs storylines the writers cooked up that aren't in the book, like the gender confused pirate and random Rhaeneyra-prostitute kiss scene.)
Biggest surprise this season for me was Aegon. Was not expecting to enjoy his character as much as I did but his actor brought such a compelling and tragic aura to his character. Season was still good overall but it’s definitely a victim of being 8 episodes instead of 10.
“There’s fast travel” To be fair, Dragonstone and Kings Landing are extremely close to each other so it’s not that far and it makes sense that travel between the two places is faster than most
Season 3 better be an absolute banger given the fact that we just watched 8 hours of prologue and we're about to wait 2-3 years for any of the pieces to move 😢
I think they really did just pitch the show and propped it up to have too many seasons for the amount of source material there is. I mean there's what, 50 pages of a book I'm pretty sure? 3 seasons is all they really needed, but instead, we're getting at least 4, and they're very drawn out as a result.
@kp6903 the entire book tells a much longer history than just the Dance. The book is the equivalent of a history book in our world telling the history of the year 1800 through modern day, and the Dance is the equivalent of WW2- something which will be talked about in the book a good amount, but which obviously isn't the entire book and which only takes up a fraction of it all in all.
While I agree with most of what Charlie said, the travels between Dragonstone and King's Landing are the only ones that really feel quick - and that's by design, as Dragonstone and King's Landing are basically right beside one another, Dragonstone is a very nearby island and so is Driftmark, so that's why Corlys and Addam can come and go as well.
I get why more casual viewers wouldnt get that because there isnt much of anything that shows how close KIngs Landing, Dragonstone, and Driftmark are and even to a point Harrenhall. Most of the characters are wayyy closer to each other in HOTD compared to GOT
this show is amazing for people who genuinely know the lore, but like I said for the casual view it can seem like so much info and they got lost easily, I feel like a lot of the bad criticism is because lots of people don't know the actual story.
@@sam7609a lot of the criticism come from the fact that hbo isnt following the book story, i assure asoiaf nerds are the ones that hate the show the most
@@iwantchickenwings629the books were more of an outline to be honest, it didn’t really go into deep detail much, so for me i think it’s just watching the show writers own take of what’s going on
They wrote themselves into a corner with Daemon. His biggest moments had to happen at the start and end of the season in order to fit into the overall storyline. That’s why the in between is so drawn out, he was given too much screen time but they couldn’t do anything with his character until the tree moment.
They brought that on themselves by cutting out stuff in the book for no reason. They turned Jacerys's journey to Winterfell into a one episode thing instead of a multi-stop journey like in the book. In the book, he goes to the Vale first to negotiate with Jeyne Arryn before moving on to Winterfell and befriending Cregan Stark. They skip the Vale and the entirety of the journey they could have used to flesh him out as a character and have him grow as a negotiator and leader. That could have filled screentime instead of the nonsense show-original Harrenhal bullshit with Daemon.
In the books Daemon is literally doing nothing but waiting for his army, I understand they had Matt Smith and can't exactly afford to do nothing with him but Jesus was it so boring and unnecessary, instead of giving arcs to Jacerys, Helaena, Aemond, Baela or literally any other character that's supposed to be relevant at this point in the story, they chose to "flesh out" Daemon, and it's just ass backwards visual diarrhea that felt hollow and artificial at the end of it, "I'm grappling with decades of my own self interest and poor decisions but Three Eyed Helaena told me to shut up and be a side character so I guess I'll believe in Rhaenyra now" sick character development. 🙄
I know a lot of people dislike Daemon's story, but he showed last season how he didn't give a shit about prophecies and how he thought Rhaenyra was a fool for believing in them. So the second season spent time moulding his character to learn to accept that it wasn't all bullshit. It took too long, but they needed to deconstruct him thoroughly to get his character on a different track. Would have preferred if we got a 10 episode season and saw a reformed Daemon acting on behalf of Rhaenyra in a battle in 10th episode finale or something but sadly they cut the episode count. Which fucking sucks.
Fr his character arc has been good, jus a tad stretched out, but not much. Charlie I think gets a lil too bored sometimes by character development and such. Like a season finale doesn’t mean the character needs to do something awesome yet, if it isn’t the SERIES finale atleast. He’s set up for next season
How good Season 2 is, depends entirely on how good Season 3 is. All that set-up needs to be in service of something. We spent a whole Season watching people set-up a chessboard, and now we have to wait a few years to actually play. It better be the best game of chess ever.
@@brotherboom5811I think he’s moreso talking about overall how the show will be viewed when season 3 comes out, yea u can judge season 2 on its own but it’ll 100% be looked at more fondly if season 3 knocks it out the park as more people will have appreciated the set up it provided for season 3
@th0ma572 I get the point but I don't agree with withholding criticism. If Season 3 is amazing I have no problem with reassessing Season 2, but in the meantime it's fair to critique Season 2 as it is. Personally I enjoyed Season 1 more than Season 2.
5:12. In fairness, Dragonstone is across the bay from Kings Landing, so it’s not a long distance to travel for either character. Furthermore, it’s easy to get from place to place if you have a dragon
Huh? He's always been a power crazed maniac since childhood and the crazy comes out when he feels humiliated. When the boys did the pink dread prank he snuck into the dragon pit alone, super dangerous as he knows since he's done it before according to Helaena, almost gets killed by Dreamfyre. Not sure if he was trying to steal someone else's dragon but he's reckless and seeks power when he feels humiliated. Then he gets into a fight after claiming Vhagar. Wins the fight by he's so crazed with power he then threatens to kill his 5 year old nephew with a rock. All because these people humiliated him. He burns his brother because Aegon mocks him. He even says this season he regrets killing Luke but his temper gets the better of him sometimes. He didn't get over losing an eye and Luke never being punished. It humiliated him. He burns a town because he had to flee when confronting Rhaenyra. He was humiliated and he became crazed. Aemond was always like this. You just didn't pay attention.
@@Freya1412 He is referring to the fact that Aemond was smart and clever while also bold and borderline reckless. Two episodes later they make him dumb and reckless.
@@Freya1412 the episode when he upstaged aegon in front of everybody and planned an ambush for the castle they took over while killing a dragonrider showed otherwise.
One thing that you didn't touch on which I think is kind of weird is that they skip a lot of battles. The battle of windmills was just a quick cutscene and everyone is dead. The place that Aemond burned down with vhagar in this last episode they just completely skipped and we didn't really know what happened until like 10 minutes later when cripple #1 told burn victim #1 that Aemond did it. And at that point nobody really gives a shit anymore. So like, instead of using half the season to Daemon just walking around daydreaming, why not put some of that time to actually creating some really intense battles? Imagine watching Aemond take a dragon and fucking incinerate an entire town, that would really get you riled up compared to just watching the aftermath with a close up of Aemonds face.
Big battle scenes cost a ridiculous amount of time, money and effort to make. I worked on a film that had a bigger budget than HotD which had a battle scene - it took four months working 5+ days a week just to prepare the costumes.

Besides e4, the bstrds dragon bonding, a a handful of other scenes, this entire season has been a slog and massive let down. Daemon was the best character, had him tripping for an entire season then he bends the knee. Say goodbye to the most interesting wild card of the show. The writing and character tension during the idle moments has also massively declined from GOT or even HOTD s1. What a snooze fest
Honestly if they had 10 episodes and had the Gullet and or the taking of Kings Landing be in the last two episodes it wouldve had a way better payoff that wouldve been more reminiscent of early GOT where the seasons would slowly build up to one or two major events like The Blackwater, Red Wedding, Watchers on the Wall.
This is what I expected as well. It felt very odd to end it here, because imagine if HOTD season 1 only lasted 8 episodes? There was so much more thought and depth with the writing there compared to here which they try their hardest to cram in the remaining episode time 😂
I totally agree with you, but only from viewer point. From 🤑💰 point their decision is the best possible. They ended on the best cliffhanger, so that everyone who watched it would tune up for season 3. They will probably start it slow, first episode probably about Rhaena claiming the sheep dragon(cant imagine her dying because she played a huge role, so the dragon will probably take the role of silverwing) and the next 3 episodes about politics and preparation for the war. Then they will show the start of the siege with dragons, probably one dragon fight per episode with fillers like politics and ending the season with the ending of the dance as we know, if you read the books
This is what was originally intended, the scripts for this season were completed around 2022 as far as I know and they wrote 10 episodes ending with the Gullet. Then HBO came in and slashed the budget and episode count after the scripts were complete and they didn't have the money to do the Gullet to the scale they wanted if they kept it in Season 2 so they had to decide whether to have the finale be a letdown or have the finale be a letdown with one of the coolest battles being a letdown too.
No one has noticed in the opening credits that you actually see in the tapestry, cannibal chasing sheepstealer and sunfyre fighting grey ghost. Cannibal will appear in S3.
About the whole "fast travel" thing: Kings landing and dragon stone are quite close to each other and the characters are traveling by water which is a lot fast and direct. That's why at the end of the 7th episode aemond doesn't even fly for that long and already reaches dragon stone while chasing ulf. Same reason Stannis was able to bring hid entire fleet of army in a single night through blackwater bay. Because the two places are quite close to each other

I think the fast travel issue is largely because King's Landing is basically right next to dragonstone, so the travel time is pretty short. They could do better by driving this point better in the show, but they are close on the maps as compared to, say, Winterfell. Security in the two places are also a tad lax because both parties probably expect a large army or dragons to be sent by the other side instead of a single knight or the equivalent Silent Sister to Dragonstone or the citadel respectively.
Honestly killed all my hype for the show. The changes they made from the source material ruin characters, story and have massive implications for the future that I don’t think the writers have the skill to write themselves out of. I feel like I do have to point out that dragonstone is actually extremely close to the Red Keep by water. And they do mention that flying on Dragon Back is quicker than sending a raven.
Episode 1-3 led up to an epic 4th episode very well, they should've used 5-7 to lead up to an epic finale rather than also using it as lead up to season 3. HBO is to blame though, they wouldn't allow a budget for another battle which there's two they could've used to finish the season on, streaming services suck. However, Ramin Djawadi will never fail us
I have to disagree with the daemon point. I will admit, harrenhal at times was repetitive but with ALL the old gods lore we got and the character development for daemon it was great
I was happy with the season overall, but I'm not your average normie fan. I'll take (last) Aegon x Otto scene over a meaningless filler battle any day of the week (which Rooks Rest was not, but let's say Ep8 was)
This video popped up on my YT recommended on my TV. I agreed with every word you said so much that I opened up my laptop to leave this comment. Nailed it.
"It was revenge for Aegon trying to steal Rhaenryas throne, and a lot of other things. And there was nothing that we could do about it. Rhaenyra was a made man and Aegon wasn't. And we had to sit still and take it. It was among the Targaryen's. It was real greaseball shit" - Alicent Hightower
Just a friendly reminder: Dragonstone and King's Landing are actually very close together. Same with Harrenhal. Its not GoT bullshit fast travel, AND they literally have dragons that they're using to do it.
I think the problem they have is the same as The Hobbit movies. It is one book that is being stretched out too much which creates too much filler and unnecessary long waits.
for the fast travel critique, dragonstone is right next to king's landing, only about an hour-ish away by boat. faster on dragonback. in game of thrones they would travel over long distances thats why it would take episodes to march from one place to another. yall should really read the books. they're amazing. so much better than game of thrones could ever hope to be. theres a book for house of dragon too, called fire & blood also, moist, its VHAGAR
One of the coolest group of characters are "the lads" which is led by the young Lord Tully and a bunch of other characters named after Muppets, who are young riverlords that lead armies into massive battles that they all end up winning. Daeron Targaryn is also going to be really cool, he goes and saves Otto Hightower and gets named "daeron the daring". The dragon dreams at the end of the last episode were hinting at Bryndyn Rivers aka Bloodraven who ends up being the 3 eyed raven, as well as the rest of the game of thrones series obviously, but it also sets up the new series " a knight of the seven kingdoms" which stars Maester Aemon from the OG show's brother and a decendant of Brienne of Tarth named Duncan the Tall. Honestly these seasons meaning to build up the next series and seasons and hype them up is a good play.
Half these characters don't appear, the lads probably won't or have minor roles, if they don't cut them like Nettles, Bloodraven missing an eye is kind of a big deal for his character and Bittersteel's yet they didn't include that, they probably will give Betha Blackwood a minor role if at all and that end twist with Alicent.
I feel like, compared to GRRM's GoT, there are barely any wider societal consequences and public opinion is too easily swayed, I constantly felt like "well this is gonna backfire" and then nothing happens
On fast travel: dragonstone and kings landing are just across the bay from each other, so traveling quickly between the cities, especially on dragon, makes sense
GoT had much happening. Several characters with different stories spread out in different parts of the world. HoD has nothing. 2 settings and one single story. Nothing happens, ever. They just talk in circles and rinse the same scenes over and over again. Picking off things from a boat as C and A talk to eachother for 8 episodes. It's the worst season of a series I thought I liked that I have ever watched in my life. Waste of time. I literally fast forwarded so much of the season.
@@Doorkey2 I disagree, it's true that an ending can absolutely make or break a series, but it's start and middle section can be judged separatedly, if one wanted to. Granted, I've purposely been avoiding seasons 7 & 8 cause I want to read the books first and not sully my mind with stinking garbage, so maybe that's why I can comfortably say "up to season 4 it is a masterpiece".
The issue with fast travelling is not the logistical inconsistency. We just miss the great little "road movies" that travelling provided. Unlikely teamups (Brienne and Jaime), blossoming friendships (Hound and Arya), buddy comedies (Tyrion and Varys), great dialogue during a campfire scene, unexpected events on the road that derail our heroes, etc etc. The travelling itself was fun to watch and added so much to the world building. I get that this is a different story with a different flow but, I miss the road movies.
The worst part is that now we know we've been waiting 2 years just for a trailer of season 3.. AND NOW WE HAVE TO WAIT 2 MORE YEARS and pray that the third one is good enough.. so much time wasted sadly, it feels like a joke to the fans what they did.
Regarding the critique where Rhaenyra travels to Kings Landing quickly, Dragonstone isn't far from Kings Landing, but.. he has a fair point about how easy it seemed for her to infiltrate KL.
Yeah, but the way they put those scenes was weird. We go from silverwing at dragonstone to suddenly him flying over Kings landing and then aemond at Kings landing cuts directly to him at dragonstone. They just wanted another scene of Rhaenyra looking at the camera all seriously, which has led to nothing but her whining the entire season.

They have two eight episode long seasons to tell this story. As someone who read Fire and Blood, they will have to cut a lot or have a battle or other important event happen for like 13 of the 16 remaining episodes. I thought this season would end on a certain battle but i guess that will have to happen episode 1 of the next season or else they are cutting a lot out. They already cut some characters out but still, I don't know they are going to handle this.
Idk the book was like 50 pages long I actually feel like they stretched this season out. I feel like the rest of the story could be told in 1 season if you just jumped from point to point
To be fair, the whole two seasons so far is based on less then around 50 pages in a book which references the dance of dragons. What it is written about would be two episodes of game of thrones (when it was good) It is based on three accounts as a historical document and how they merged them into what it is, is an amazing feat. Shit goes down in harrenhall, why the build up. Fast travel is a stretch because unlike running from where Jon and co caught the walker to the wall in GOT and the distance from kings landing and dragon stone, that is a stones throw away essentially. Blood and cheese, aemond, dragon riders. This is a less suspenseful season but important and though not as good, it is great for what (hopefully if they don’t pull a D&D) would pay off well.
To be fair, Dragonstone and kings landing are right next to each other. Boats are faster than walking and it takes time to gather armies. I agree it is slow, but GOT was slow too. It took like 7 seasons for the white walkers to breach the wall. At the end of GOT, PPL were moving back and forth from the the wall to kings landing at warp speed. They were traveling like 20x the distance that alicent did. Also the whole of season 1 was build up too? The pinnacle of this episode was Alicent's decision. I think it was better than season 1 bc its about the ppl not the action. There's a lot of that coming though.maybe they had to save budget for the next season lol
Yeah the white walkers arrived in season 7 but the characters weren't fucking around for the duration. They were engaged in their personal conflicts and fulfilling their vendettas and revenges and plots and desires. HOTD is just Daemon tripping balls for 6 fucking episodes.
Also, in the books Otto is fired as hand because he's 'fighting a war with ravens and quills when we should be using dragons' -- it's his efforts that get the Triarchy on board. They just had Tyland do it because he needs facetime if we're to care about him later on in the narrative.
@@filiperosa7496 Yes, the 2nd part of Fire & Blood has not been published yet. I have like 1.5 chapters left of Fire and Blood part 1 so maybe you do find out what happened to Otto.
The worst part to me is how the show runners have said they’re stopping at 4 seasons. That means that have a TON of book material to cram into only 2 seasons.
Haven't read that, but I'm pretty sure they have few more pages left, to actually STRETCH into 2 more seasons. This is not Song of Ice and Fire we are talking about. It's a book written like historical records. Relatively short description of what has happened according to the victorious side.

The gullet Seizure of Kingslanding Butcher's ball Storming of the dragonpit Tumbelton God's eye Fall of dragonstone Death of Rhaynera Death of Aegon Hour of the Wolf Coronation of Aegon III When you consider there needs to be downtime between these and time for Rhaynera to go semi-mad there's zero way you're doing that in 16 episodes.
1. They could have cut Daemon's moral dillemas to fewer episodes: conquer the Riverlands, eventually land in Harrenhal for 3-4 episodes - be haunted by visions and people in general disliking him to realize, that in fact Rheanyra is the way to go. 2. This season could easily be top notch with just a setup for a great war, if only they had shown the setup indeed. It's purely about the Riverlands. Instead, they could have written some cool storylines for other great houses, like struggles in Casterly Rock for Lannisters, maybe add some Greyjoys for that matter. Possibly a conflict in Storm's End and Baratheons. And definitely some stuff in the North. There was nothing about it. Also, a Triarchy was a GREAT opportunity for them to develop the story for the sea blockade and Velaryons internal struggle. None of that happened. 3. They could have interweaved the prophecies foreshadowing beautifully with Haelena playing a major role there - with subtlety and nuances - but they chose to go for straight up spoilers-alike storytelling. Really, for the format they chose for that season there are countless opportunities. A great example of cool storytelling were the boats with food sent by Rhaenyra. They could have cut just on that, but they decided to get rid of nuances for the sake of exposition in case the audience is dumb enough to make something of that on their own. And a huge minus, in my personal taste, is the cinematography - some shots where spectacular - but in general, this season was WAAAAY too "trailer-esque". Some scenes were so "perfectly" shot it almost felt unnatural. So yeah, it's just a wasted potential for a great story, even for just a setup to season 3.
I agree with Charlie on most of what he said. Daemon was the best character in S#1 yet for some odd reason he's stuck in Harrenhal in S#2 not doing much but being haunted when in Fire & Blood, he's actively campaigning & doing bada@$ stuff. The show is suppose to be about The Dance of Dragons which is a very brutal apocalyptic-like civil war between 2 ruthless rival factions yet we only really get one battle in S#2 & even than there's not much ground combat & only one Dragon vs Dragon clash, WTF HBO Max??? They also introduce a great important new character in Cregan Stark but he only shows up in the S#2 Premiere🤦 Season #3 had better step up its game big-time. No more Set-Ups, lets see the Dance of Dragons fully realized🤞🤞
@@CarbonFang25Yeah ofc, but they blatantly cut the upcoming battle from the end of this season. It's very obvious. And as OP says they should have given characters like Cregan more screen time to build his connection with Jace. We didn't need an acid trip scene every episode. They overused some characters and cut or underused others.
I get that opener of season 3 is gonna be totally explosive but I feel like it would've made more sense to have that be the finale of this season. I feel like I'm gonna have completely forgotten what happened this season by season 3 and it's gonna take away the momentum for the opener for sure
I won't defend how awful the security is everywhere, but I will say that Dragonstone and King's Landing are very close to each other. Which I guess kinda explains the fast traveling.
@@patryk7204 it’s because dragonstone is on the other side of the bay. I think with scaling it essentially amounts to saying ‘Cuba is close to Texas’ but with all the issues with pacing this season I would say I am glad it just has Alicent and Rhaenyra teleporting between the two.
@@patryk7204They are close. In late GoT people travel continents in minutes. Crossing a bay by boat, where you can see the other place is hardly far in comparison to that. It's meant to be a 1 day trip.
I loved Daemon’s story this year. So interesting to see the examination of his character and ties in well with book lore around the old gods and prophecy etc. But it was lacking a finale, as the season in general was, where we see him act on his renewed loyalty to Rhaenyra

Just stop finding shit to complain about, it was a season meant to character development.
@@TheOnlyErgo How about stop crying like a little 12 year old. And as a 12 year old I guess you're too s to figure out I watched the entire episode and didn't turn it off with 10 mins left.
@@TT79- Daemon went from being a prideful and egotistical child that was throwing a hissy fit because the throne passed him so he tried to betray Rhaenyra to claim it for himself to an understanding character that respects Rhaenyra and Viserys' decision and understands the importance of levelheadedness and prophecy so yeah id say there was definitely character growth i just think a lot of people have problems with the pacing of it, which personally i didn't so i love it, but others may not, but saying there wasn't character development is a little braindead I cant lie. This whole season was focused around character development and the flaws of each character, people just want to see dragons and explosions but are upset that its more grounded and realistic, albeit a little slow at times
What I really liked in the first seasons of GoT is that the big episode of the season where things really happen and the season hits it's climax, they would always make it on the 9th episode (second to last), and then the last episode would wrap up the events of the previous episode and setup the next season. So every season felt like a whole story in of itself, every season had it's own arch. Here it feels like both season 1 and season 2 are just setups for the big event that they keep hinting at. And that's fine, the problem is the inexistence of a story arch for the season itself.
Honestly the season was pretty boring overall besides a few highlights. I do think there are things they could have changed to improve this build up. I will say though. The finale had AMAZING dialogue. Corlys being confronted felt so raw. Jace putting Ulf in his place after we begin to see his inner turmoil. Rhaenyra and Alicent coming to terms in a complex and layered relationship they have built up their whole lives. These moments gave early Game of Thrones energy. Really hoping we get more of this next season in addition to the twists of the coming war.
The Rhaenyra and Alicent stuff is the worst change in the show. Made them into two besties who only want to do the best for everyone. When book Alicent is older, not Rhaenyra's friend (more of an evil stepmother), and does plenty of horrible things. Rhaenyra also does plenty of horrible things, but so far the show gave them to Daemon (because apparently people liked him too much in season 1 and they had to try and ruin him). Aegon II carried this season.
@@Neil-qg9cw that’s definitely an understandable take. I haven’t read the book so I can’t relate. At least by the show I think that dialogue was really well written. Initially Rhaenyra was very cold to Alicent who has internalized the idea of running away from all that she has caused. You can see as the conversation progresses the strife on Rhaenyra’s face. Her childhood friend who was the closest to her during the easiest time of her life wanting to run away. In contrast to the cold world they have become major players in. Despite this, she sticks to her duty and chooses to take accountability. I don’t think they intentionally tried to ruin Daemon. He was definitely hard to watch this season which made the final payoff pretty neutral. I also don’t think they are trying to show these two as besties but they are the core of the show. That’s where this all began. Anyways it’s all an opinion. Yours is valid too.
@@Mustang_Dan agreed! That’s why I’m hoping this writing carries over to next season in conjunction with the upcoming action and twists. Then I believe we’ll have some comparable content ❤️
To settle this teleporting complaint lets look at things objectively. Assuming a fast ship which we should since its royalty hiring the ship, then they would be traveling about 5knots, the distance from Dragonstone to KL is 400mi, so that that speed it would take Rhaenyra or Alicent 3 days to get there one way. In episode 3 Daemon arrives at Harrenhal i calculated the distance from Dragonstone to Harrenhal to roughly be about 520miles. So that means if he's flying at 35mph then it would take him 14 hours. The In episode he left and it was later in the day since candles were lit then between when he leaves and when we next see him, 1 night passes in episode 3 which is when Rhaenyra is attacked. He then arrives in episode 3 in the early evening. So it actually takes him more than 14 hours. At the end of Episode 3 Rhaenyra appears in KL. So we have to assume 3 days pass, and this is kind of confirmed by the fact that Baela returns and Rhaenyra isnt there. They sent ravens to Harrenhal and they see that nothing has returned so enough time has elapsed for them to expect a response. The birds on average fly 50mph per hour so a nonstop one way trip would take 10hrs. We have to assume that once those 10hrs of flight time have elapsed that they need ot sleep and eat. So it would infact take about 2-3 days, everything tracks so far. Back in Harrenhal atleast 1 days elapses as Daemon takes the shroom juice and wakes up a different day so it is unclear how long he was tripping. But we do know that he sends for the Blackwoods at the begning of the episode which is rougly 250- 300miles from Harrenhal. The Raven needs to get there so thats 1 day, and horses can travel at most 30 miles a day so that means it would take around 8-10 days for them to arrive on horseback alone. So we are looking at 9-11 days between the begining of episode 4 and when the Blackwoods arrive. If we assume this happens concurrently with Rhaenrya's travels to kings landing which would take no more than 8 days then the timing works out. After the arrival of the black woods Rhaenyra arrives at Dragostone. So in terms of time its also works out.
Season 3 better be an absolute banger given the fact that we just watched 8 hours of prologue and we're about to wait 2-3 years for any of the pieces to move
If I were to drink a shot for every time Rhaenyra says "what would you have me do?" Or when Daemon trips his balls out in Harrenhall, half of the episodes I would finish watching being absolutely hammered.

The emphasis shld have been on easy travel across enemy lines during a time of war

@kp6903 the entire book tells a much longer history than just the Dance. They wrote themselves into a corner with Daemon. His biggest moments had to happen at the start and end of the season in order to fit into the overall storyline. That’s why the in between is so drawn out, he was given too much screen time but they couldn’t do anything with his character until the tree moment.
aka it's bad writing. dont know why it took this long for ppl to realise how poor the writing on this show is
They brought that on themselves by cutting out stuff in the book for no reason.
Which fucking sucks.

bro that's what power does to people. ☕

I cant believe we got 6 episodes of what has been coined the haunting of harrenhall for daemon. What a waste of an excellent actor and our time
Besides e4, the bstrds dragon bonding, a a handful of other scenes, this entire season has been a slog and massive let down. Daemon was the best character, had him tripping for an entire season then he bends the knee. Say goodbye to the most interesting wild card of the show. The writing and character tension during the idle moments has also massively declined from GOT or even HOTD s1. What a snooze fest
Am I the only one who loved every second of those scenes
Pretty sure in the books he was at harrenhall for like a whole year.
@@ifwcorvidsYes, get a brain.
@@ifwcorvids no I actually enjoyed them at first, but then it became gratuitous, esp when the entire show lost momentum
Really gave me ptsd flashbacks to the walking dead. Nothing happens, same conversations over and over, a war is coming… bleh
About the whole "fast travel" thing:
Kings landing and dragon stone are quite close to each other and the characters are traveling by water which is a lot fast and direct.

Daemon stuck in HarenHorror
I think the problem they have is the same as The Hobbit movies. It is one book that is being stretched out too much which creates too much filler and unnecessary long waits.
for the fast travel critique, dragonstone is right next to king's landing, only about an hour-ish away by boat. faster on dragonback. in game of thrones they would travel over long distances thats why it would take episodes to march from one place to another.
yall should really read the books. they're amazing. so much better than game of thrones could ever hope to be. theres a book for house of dragon too, called fire & blood
also, moist, its VHAGAR
I think you meant to write brienne's ancestor not decendant
Half these characters don't appear, the lads probably won't or have minor roles, if they don't cut them like Nettles, Bloodraven missing an eye is kind of a big deal for his character and Bittersteel's yet they didn't include that, they probably will give Betha Blackwood a minor role if at all and that end twist with Alicent.
I feel like, compared to GRRM's GoT, there are barely any wider societal consequences and public opinion is too easily swayed, I constantly felt like "well this is gonna backfire" and then nothing happens
Why does everyone keep bringing up Jaehaerys? even after his death, the “son for a son” debt still wasn’t paid, he was just part of the collateral.
On fast travel: dragonstone and kings landing are just across the bay from each other, so traveling quickly between the cities, especially on dragon, makes sense
To be fair, they did that with the original game of thrones. 0:10

To be fair, the whole two seasons so far is based on less then around 50 pages in a book which references the dance of dragons.
What it is written about would be two episodes of game of thrones (when it was good)
It is based on three accounts as a historical document and how they merged them into what it is, is an amazing feat.
“Wont get into spoilers” immediately gets into spoilers lol

This season should have just been the first half of a season. Not the full season
I agree with Charlie on most of what he said.
Daemon was the best character in S#1 yet for some odd reason he's stuck in Harrenhal in S#2 not doing much but being haunted when in Fire & Blood, he's actively campaigning & doing bada@$ stuff.
I don’t think bro understands kinglanding is literally around the corner from dragon stone
Yea a lot of people seem to forget that.
Yes, but the thing that made GoT so good was the great balance of that kind of dialogue with exciting payoffs ALONG THE WAY.
To be fair it's not really fast traveling since Dragonstone is surprisingly close to King's Landing
