Nice demo. Owning the JX-08 for half a year now, I can say that it is a really nice sounding little synth that can quickly cover most of your synthwave needs. Very easy to program and tweak, and I can recommend it for really nice and powerful synth bass , too, something I didnt exspect in the first place. It's also great that you have three chorus types to choose from (Juno, JX8P and DimenstionD).
They are simply ill-informed and not clever enough to be able to read electronic schematics to know how it works. While it will not entirely sound like VCO synth it has a character trade- off that will allow making digital patches, more authentic pianos, strings etc than most VCO's synths of that time
People are ridiculous. It’s got DCOs, not digital oscillators, analog oscillators where the frequency and other oscillator options are controlled by a microprocessor. DX7 sounds digital. 8p, absolutely not.
Wow, I didn't expect to like the Boutique version better, but it sounds much more alive to me. The original sounds much more muffled and dull in comparison. Amazing! Thanks for the demo!
I would say, that JX-08 sounds a bit different than JX-8P, but still very good, wide and warm. And additional features (duo-timbral!) makes it really good synth imo!
Great job. I absolutely appreciate you going through the sounds with patch names. I liked that you played the factory sounds as is, without editing every sound, as others may do.
Me too! Now in very time-consuming quandary all over the Internet (between this somewhat less popular JX-08 and the more obvious JU-06A...) ; 20 voices versus only 4 voices, bitimbral versus monotimbral ; USB-C versus older USB ; gray versus colourful (???)
Thanks for the demo, especially the vs on the factory patches! Not as close as I'd hope, but the added features and ease of programmability are excellent additions!
Very welcome, Marshal! Yes, the additional features really are great, and probably with a bit of editing, eq and a different (more linear) keyboard velocity response from a different MIDI controller you can get it to sound very similar to the original.
This little synth really comes into its own when you layer the A and B patches, from banks A, B, C, and D - especially if you have created some of the patches yourself. The sounds are often very rich with a lot of sizzle. A very powerful synth!
Thank you for the reminder. I just took one voice of b78 (Soundtrack), put the tuning right in the middle, added a little LFO movemont turned off the chorus and then layered it with the original. What a fat and gorgeus sound!! 🤩 PS: you can also keep the chorus and it sonds even fatter!!
nice demo - definitely not as warm or dark as the original, but the Boutique JX-08 seem like it could get closer with more clever filtering and some EQing - it's not a bad copy for most things and it has the extra goodies like polyphony, FX, and ARP+SEQ (as well as power/size portability) I had to get one recently while on sale - It will be a nice portable companion for my JU-06A 🙂 I never owned a JX-8P, but I sampled a friend's into my E-max II while in college in the early 90s - was good enough for the time
What better way to review a model based directly on the JX8p than with the original article. The 8p being the first analog polysynth I ever got to play, that was my main reason to check out the review. In some instances, it sounds identical to the original, and some of the modern patches sound like the original’s presets. A.22 (“We All Love It”) and A.63 (“Bell Chorus”) were particularly fascinating to me. They include patched portamento. I’m used to thinking the original 8p’s polyphony and portamento couldn’t be saved to memory, as they can on the 2 Super JX models; I only knew what could be done with pitch envelopes. Wouldn’t mind being proved wrong though - or informed this was an amendment to the architecture for the JX-08.. I only wish this module had been loaded with the same DIN system as the PG-800 programmer. As such, it could function as an alternative to that programmer if plugged into the original or the Super JX units. Would not be surprised if I were one of several people expressing that sentiment.
Great review! Just listening to the first part I really started to think I should sell my JX-8P and get the JX-08. The comparison immediately made me change my mind, the JX-8P sounds much better! Every patch was so much better on the JX-8P, maybe a bit of tweaking on the JX-08 could get things closer but it just didn’t seem to have the complexity and strength of sound that the JX-8P has.
Yep agree. Great A-B comparison. The JX-08 certainly sounds very nice but it is no 8P replacement. I also like editing the independent ADSR envelopes for VCA and VCF separately on my PG-800 rather than switching between them, but after owning the JP-08 with it's tiny sliders, I see why Roland made this design decision. The original JX-8P sounds so silky and organic - the soundtrack, low strings and voice patches show that really well. The JX-08 captured the character but is not quite there. It's definitely possible in software because the PG-8X plugin nails it. It's a shame Roland didn't use their ACB technology for this synth because their ACB emulations are amazing.
@@digitaldirtbagg Another vote for the PG8X! I have a JX10, but usually just open the VST because it's close enough and the JX10 is a pain to program (and absolutely massive)

It's just Zen Core sounding like Zen Core yet again for the umpteenth time. Zen Core is a nice sounding VA engine, but having a picture of a JX-8P on the box for the JX-08 is a crime. ACB should be used for emulations of analogue classics, and it's only peer pressure from the masses about the 4 voice (per chip) limit combined with Roland's stubbornness about not using multiple BMC chips in boutiques or spinning up a newer iteration with more cores that has lead us to this sad point Cheers for the video though
I hope people make music with this. Sorry to the Artist that can’t afford the original synth or don’t have the space for the size of the original. That being said. This is such a awesome synth. If you can’t make a track with this then I don’t know what you need. Maybe a space ship? If your listening to a track for how many voices are in a synth I think your missing the point in my opinion. Let’s not forget it’s about making music at the end of the day. People have made great tracks with less 🫶🏽
Why can't Roland just re-release the JX8P? Maybe incorporate the programmer into the case and double the polyphony. It sounds so pleasing as it has a mellow, warm nature.
why does the JX-08 have so much HF noise? Listen starting from 20:06. If it's simulated BBD noise it's annoying - it has way too much HF content and sounds fake.
I got a JX-8P in my System-8. I came with update 1.5(?) and up to eight voices. My System-8 did cost me 900€. It was second hand, but mostly unused. It was in pristine condition. I find buying used synth the much better investment compared to this tiny "boutique" stuff. I have bought an MC-707 and a System-8 together for the price of 4..5 "boutique" synths. I think my investment is the better one.
a cheep system 8 like that is a great value for sure!, except if you consider they're green glowing fugly Aria colors & that you cant play all the different models at the same time like i can do with my boutiques, & it can only hold 3 models in memory on the hardware at any time which is why i passed on a used system8 & went boutique instead if maybe the system 8 had more & better patch storage and management ability it probably would have swayed me to do the same as you though...shame they botched that part needlessly... BTW Question is the exact model of this JX-08 in the system 8 or is it another previous or cloud model that they put in the system 8 because i though it couldn't load NoN ACB models of synths?....& only Jupiter x could do that ?

I hate to be one of those “vintage is better” people but the only patch that sounded the same was Piano 2. The rest felt overhyped and too sensitive to velocity on the filter, etc. The original sounds more musical to me overall and by a significant margin. This video makes me want to get a JX-8p and pass on getting the Plug In for my Fantom 07. Thank you for making this video.
The chorus on the JX-08 is too much. Leaves patches sounding thin and hollow you can hear this in low strings patch. The JX-08 does sound nice more-so without that chorus. Very curious to hear Some comparisons without the Chorus on both.
@digital dirtbag Yeah, I know... but the originals are as expensive or more than the synths themselves, and it would be cool to have a programmer that says ROLAND somewhere, with the same great look of the JX08...
Roland would give it tiny sliders and waste half the space with touch strips and a helicopter pad. Then they'd tie it to Roland Cloud and charge $400. For $100, you'd be lucky to get a Donner et al controller for JXcetera.
Toddlers...That's how i think about VSTusers mouseclicking on small icons and arrows. I'm 185cm tall and have big hands and yet i get along very well with my Boutique synths. Without a single computer in the neigbourhood, only a Boss hardware multitrack. ;-))
Zounds. The only company who's return payment BOUNCED at paypal. I shit you not. Roughly 3 or 4 years ago I returned a $150 Epiphone shit guitar and the payment back to my Paypal BOUNCED. I contacted paypal and they explained that the payment could not proceed due to insufficient funds by the seller. Unbelievable. They are now under the umbrella of musicians friend, guitar center, and woodwind and brasswind - basically a gigantic corporate conglomerate. This is video IS an ad.
It's a promotional video... but it's literally just showing the presets exaxtly as Roland programmed them on the synth. Therefore, some JX-08 presets are played in stereo, while all JX-8P presets are shown in mono. After the initial plug for zzzounds, there is no further marketing talk. So, I think of it as promotional, but not salesmanship.
I promptly disclose that zZounds sent me the unit for review - look at the top left corner and it should show "Includes paid promotion" to signify they sent to me for affiliate link, RUclips actually requires creators to specify if it's an independent or promoted video at the beginning of their automatized checking tests prior to uploading. I buy 99% of the gear I show on my channel by myself, with my own money. You complain for the 1% of the times that I feature a sponsor but no word for the other 99%. Okay.
And I am mistaken. Zzounds, American Musical, Same Day music are all the same entity. Musicians Friend, Guitar Center, and Woodwind brasswind are another. Sweetwater is owned by Providence Equity....So basically in this day in age we have the choice of 3 huge companies who dominate the entire retail music industry. Sad lack of choices and one that only spells less competition and greater control of prices for the consumer.

Do you actually think its good, compared to how Espen rated it? Tempted sounds good imo
A.46 reminds me of the start of the original Playstation loading screen.
B37 Light pluck 👍
I got a JX-8P in my System-8. I came with update 1.5(?) and up to eight voices. My System-8 did cost me 900€. It was second hand, but mostly unused. It was in pristine condition. I find buying used synth the much better investment compared to this tiny "boutique" stuff.
I have bought an MC-707 and a System-8 together for the price of 4..5 "boutique" synths. I think my investment is the better one.
@@digitaldirtbagg Yep the System 8 is an awesome synth!! I agree an ACB 8P emulation would be awesome!
I would agree if you compare to 5 boutiques. Even a used System 8 for 900 is a steal.
a cheep system 8 like that is a great value for sure!, except if you consider they're green glowing fugly Aria colors & that you cant play all the different models at the same time like i can do with my boutiques, & it can only hold 3 models in memory on the hardware at any time which is why i passed on a used system8 & went boutique instead if maybe the system 8 had more & better patch storage and management ability it probably would have swayed me to do the same as you though...shame they botched that part needlessly... BTW Question is the exact model of this JX-08 in the system 8 or is it another previous or cloud model that they put in the system 8 because i though it couldn't load NoN ACB models of synths?....& only Jupiter x could do that ?
When you play the pad sounds, using both hands - what chords are you playing? Each hand appears to play a different chord. Or is it just an inversion?
John, at which location in the video (min/sec)? Yes, probably they are chord inversions?
@@SynthManiaDotCom starting around 06:20. It's something I have noted before but never asked. I'm not that proficient at piano, relying mainly on my ability to sequence music rather than play live. So I struggle with chords of more than triads.
@@johntammaro At 6:20 I'm playing inversion of "G" chord plus the 2n d, so there is G and G (pinky and thumb on the Left Hand), and D, G, A, B on the Right Hand. Basically a normal "G" chord, plus the 2nd (A note) added to it. Then it goes to "D" chord: D and D (pinky and thumb on the Left Hand) and A, D, F# on the Right Hand. Then it goes to "Cmaj7" chord: C and C (pinky and thumb on the Left Hand) and G, B, C, E on the Right Hand
@@SynthManiaDotCom Perfect this is something I shall have a look at practicing. Thanks for the explanation.
😎
I hate to be one of those “vintage is better” people but the only patch that sounded the same was Piano 2. The rest felt overhyped and too sensitive to velocity on the filter, etc. The original sounds more musical to me overall and by a significant margin. This video makes me want to get a JX-8p and pass on getting the Plug In for my Fantom 07. Thank you for making this video.
Hi, is this a digital unit or still an analog one? Thx
It's digital. The only analogue boutique is the SE-02 👍
Love mine! The layering kind of makes it like a Super JX-10. Layers and splits can saved in Pattern memory (no Performance mode) sort of strange.
Thats the only vintage synth I want
Jx8p sound warmer
The chorus on the JX-08 is too much. Leaves patches sounding thin and hollow you can hear this in low strings patch. The JX-08 does sound nice more-so without that chorus. Very curious to hear Some comparisons without the Chorus on both.
e BOM MAS A POLIFONIA DE 4 VOZES DEIXA A DESEJAR
JX8P original version wins every time.
Roland should make cheap programmers for their vintage synths... all MKS, JX3p, JX8P, Super JX, D50, JD990, etc... like 100 bucks each.
It's nice as a little desktop analog modeling synth, but Roland pretty much doomed it by eliciting comparisons to the JX-8P.
Wow, the boutique really sucks when you compare its sounds to the original JX-8P. Why does it sound so thin and lifeless?
It’s zen core instead of acb
The free PG8X VST is better!
..And people say the Roland JX-08 sounds analog..go understand people!
I think roland made these boutique modules designed for toddler's 😁
Toddlers...That's how i think about VSTusers mouseclicking on small icons and arrows. I'm 185cm tall and have big hands and yet i get along very well with my Boutique synths. Without a single computer in the neigbourhood, only a Boss hardware multitrack. ;-))
@@deauvillevrienden no man, don't get me wrong! I prefer these roland modules than those vst"s shit! That's why i prefer hardware than software crap😉
Nope.
Okay.
@@SynthManiaDotCom I complain about Zzounds specificially. A dumpster fire of a retailer.
@@cdwhiley They are great. They also offer interest-free installment plans.
