  • Pour a fresh cup of coffee and have a seat on your comfiest wooden barstool, it's time for a friendly comparison between two awesome vintage synths: The Roland Juno-106 and JX-8P.
    Both members of the Juno family and both 6-voice DCO analog synthesizers, there's a lot to compare; but we focus on the 106 feature-set and how well the 8P emulates that classic Juno sound.
    Let me know what you think about how these two super impressive synths stack up against each other!

    Listen to this video without watching the images, whenever you hear something that makes you think "nice" it's the JX-8P, whenever you hear something that makes you go "wow!" it's the Juno.
    No competition for me. I used to own the JX-8P in the Eighties, I bought it when it was released. I could never make myself like it except for a couple of soundsthat I loved (the Steeldrums was my favourite, I made a lot of different great sounds starting from it). I ended up selling the JX-8P and bought a Matrix-6 instead. Never regretted that desicion. I would love to buy a Juno-106 but I don't have room to fit one into my small studio.

    I've had both synths, like both synths. I much prefer the 106 interface, looks, and spiky, simple sound (okay turn the chorus off, most sounds aren't great now, right?).
    I also like the 8P, you definitely can do more with it. It has a more refined sound, which can be good, it bad depending what your after.
    It has that mid 80s polysynth sound and I love it!

  • @heusker

    The 8P sounds sadder. When the pads are played 4:54, it seems like the Juno sounds like it is going through tragedy, but it has the strength to overcome, but the 8P will probably not make it through. There is a certain victory in the Juno and a tragedy in the 8P.

    On the pulse width modulation on the 8P.....you cannot do true PWM. You can however set both of the oscillators to pulse and have them cross modulate each other. Not the same but sort of in the ballpark...Nice video!

  • @shermanchow4264
    @shermanchow4264 5 лет назад +9

    You can do PWM on the 8P but you have to use sync 1 (hard sync) or 2 (cross mod + hard sync). Turn osc 1 mix to 0 (or not) and apply LFO or envelope to pitch on osc 2.

    I had both and I like the 8p much more. Its envelopes are slow and the filter is a bit "fizzy". But other than that its a much more powerful synth than the Juno 106. Start doing some sounds with a very snappy envelope and the 106 will crush the Jx8-p, which is known for having one of the least snappy envelope generators around.
    Very different beast of synths. In the 90:s I owned a Juno 106 and loved it! Very immediate results with just a few sliders.
    Besides the lack of pwm for the JX, the demo you did with the stacked oscillators on the 106 was showing a difference in favor of the 106, despite the Jx8p being a 2 osc synth.
    Overall, if I had to choose just one as an all-around analog synth, it would be the 106 due to it's snappier envelopes and also some of its better "Bread and butter" sound capabilities (strings sounds especially with the pwm available). Oh, and I love the resonance on the Juno. Great filter!
    But the very different Jx8-p (which I haven't owned but tried) is probably a good compliment if you already have one. But then, there are probably other Synths that would be a better choice as a second Synth than the Jx8-p (although you may probably get the Jx8-p cheaper).

    • @MRTUNA
      @MRTUNA  5 лет назад

      I definitely should have spend some more time comparing the envelopes! The JX8P has craaaazy long envelopes for pads and rising or falling sounds though which has been pretty fun.

  • @Mike_the_Barbarian
    @Mike_the_Barbarian 5 лет назад +7

    To me they sound very similar but where the 106 shines is in its simplicity and controls. Due to those it ends up with a really great sweet spot. While the JX8p is much more powerful synth, it just suffers from a lousy user interface design. Master the JX8p and you'll be making amazing sounds. I think the JX8p deserves more credit, but the 106 in my book is the better of the two just based on its immediacy. They both have their age issues.. 106 voice chips and JX8p aftertouch issues. I own both and a jx3p but I'm really tempted to pickup a System 8 just for reliability and sell all old ones.

      The Roland plugins have some pretty big flaws (arcs needed for knob turns iirc, high cpu consumption...the best of the hobbyist freebies are better overall. PG-8X has the general UI of the programmer and sounds legit incredible...and it's free. The best free Juno plugins (aside from TAL) are Win only though, but PG-8X is Mac too. The filters on the JX8P and the JX10 are widely acknowledged as not being amongst Roland's best. The lack of PWM and the slow envelopes are other reasons that people give for not being enamoured of the 8P. By now, the aftertouch is no longer working or if it is, is more suited to building muscles in the fingers than it is expressive playing! However, despite all that, I'd still rather have my 8P than a 106.

      The 106 definitely has an edge over the 3p. Here is a comparison/demo of the real deal(s): ruclips.net/video/WxeKpN9IV8Y/видео.html
      Just listen to the difference when the resonance is turned up on the filter. The 106 kills the Jx3-p there, which just falls over with a reduced volume and bass (The 106 volume stays or get even louder and the bass is controlled).
      Just for pure sound (not functions) the Juno 106 is still a great Synth!

    The filter in the 106 is better. However, as an owner of an 8P for over 25 years, I still think the JX-8P is a fatter sounding synth than the Juno-106 when you remove the filter from the equation. The 106 here isn't quite gain-staged properly (it's quieter), but it still sounds a bit more 'thin' than the JX-8P.
    Where the JX-8P falls short is it's 'lack' of perceived programmability because without the PG-800 or a similar editor, it's like programming in hexadecimal. That's why until recently (with the rising costs of the Juno-106), the JX-8P has kind of flown underneath the radar. That said, now that the Kiwi and Vecoven mods are available (which add pulsewidth modulation), the JX-8P is a worthy competitor if you're not so fussed about the filter not being as good.
    Also, the upside is that the JX-8P's voice chips aren't known to fail and you don't have to spend a decent amount of money getting replacement ones.

      poly synth behind the Jupiter's.
      The more desirable Juno's are fantastic-sounding but the
      Alpha is not to far behind them soundwise just a little
      warmer and that's all really.
      They are all 1 oscillator synths with a sub but the Alpha has
      14 different combined oscillator shapes which includes
      PWM on the saw tooth. it also has a better-sounding chorus
      which is totally variable and overall it's just a better synth

    The 8P was Roland's answer to everything going smoother "digital" at the time, as well as coming up with something new to fill their bottom line. You have to hear the Juno-106 on some mid to low range speakers to be blown away from it's legendary sound that left the 8P out of the annals of aural history. If you have an original Juno 106, never part with it. You can add some of the newer retro Roland releases to compliment it, which was all the 8p ever was in the first place.
