The Bad News Piles Up for Shaun - The Good Doctor

- Earlier, Lea (Paige Spara) told Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) that she deleted some patient reviews to inflate Shaun's satisfaction scores. Then, Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) tells Shaun he's moving to Montana. When Shaun loses a patient -- a baby -- because the required medication was expired, all the change he's been navigating over the past few months catches up to him. From 'The Good Doctor' season 5, episode 7, 'Expired.' Watch 'The Good Doctor' MONDAYS 10/9c on ABC. Stream on Hulu.
This scene made me cry a lot actually because you can see how hard Shaun tried to save the baby but couldn't and it probably reminds him of losing his baby
He legally can't be throwing glass jars this scene was a bit over the top imo. He's gonna wind up in jail (hopefully freddie highmore will return as norman bates lmao)
@@jaspercarr5219 Who would report him? Especially since the meds he found are expired, and filing charges would both shut down the pharmacy very expensively and lead to malpractice charges for giving expired medication to *anyone*. "It slipped through the cracks" is the sort of mistake that can be blamed, by lawyers, on cost-cutting measures that reduce safety.

I feel that losing this baby made Shaun feel like he is losing his baby all over again. He feels like he failed again. He failed to stop his baby dying despite nothing could be done but he felt that this baby could have been saved by him had the medication has not been expired. Add to the fact that he thinks everyone is either leaving him or lying to him and he just reached his breaking point.
Welcome to the context
Why hasn't he got an award yet? Haven't even watch the episode yet and seeing this clip I felt it for him
He currently has won 12 awards and a total of 44 nominations; 42 if you don’t count Teen’s choice awards and MTV awards, coz let’s face it, those awards are like participation trophies.
You should watch this show
I havent even watched the show and i feel for him
RDJ explains this precisely in Tropic Thunder
Shaun has unresolved trauma. Glassman leaving triggered his abandonment issues and was not too different from when Lea left him. Lea lying about the scores triggered his unresolved hurt from when Lea turned him down in S3. He felt like she didn't respect him then or now. Losing the baby triggered his unprocessed grief over his and Lea's loss. The people that he trusts most have left him, lied to him and did things that showed a lack of respect for him & displayed they felt he was incapable of handling his own issues.
Once Shaun acknowledges his underlying issues and understand why others behaved how they did things will be ok. Lea deleted reviews because she loves him and Salens system is flawed. Glassman left because he felt that he was no longer useful to Shaun and was grieving the loss of his marriage. Also Glassman has to realize that he is Shauns surrogate father. No matter how old or independent your kids are you don't stop being their parent. Lea has to realize that Shaun is not a child who needs to be managed or constantly protected.
Agree with you on everything but I think Glassman does know he is Shaun’s father ever since his brother died. Lea also tells him that in S4 and asks for his approval of their relationship because just like she wanted her own parents to accept Shaun, she wanted Shaun’s only parent to accept her.
Well said.
Lea hasn't usually patronized Shaun but I think she's worried she'll screw it up and that fear caused her to do what she was most afraid of. The old saying "What I fear, I create".
@@ChristineTheHippie I agree. Lea has always treated him like she would any one else which is one of the reasons Shaun was so comfortable around her from the start.
I very good analogy
We didn’t see Shaun grieve for his baby… but then this scene happened!! I hope he forgives Lea because she did everything she could to make the transition easier & was filling in for Glassman💔
I think this premature baby dying was a huge trigger for him to grieve his own baby. And Lea had lied and Glassman leaving. He’s under alot of pressure.
@@russellcowart exactly. Just way too much all at once. Everything boiled over.
What did Lea lie about?
@@hederlisa she changed his patient satisfaction score because it was still pretty low because of mean reviews. She did it because she knew how much it meant to him & how hard he tried.

We aren’t insane for god sake. Stop labelling us as one.
Seriously. Freddie Highmore has been acting since he was a child, and yet he still is extremely underrated after all these years. I know he flies under the radar not being on social media and not being in the public eye too much (respectably and understandably), but being in big hits like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Bates Motel, and now the Good Doctor, he doesn't get the attention he deserves. I actually have to explain to people who he is if I mention him and that's sad. He should already have Emmys and Oscars under his belt at this point (neither of which he's been nominated for at all).
@@a_polar_bear06 I think they are referring to his role in bates motel with this statement rather than his role here as Shaun

This scene was so powerful!!! I work with ASD children and it’s heartbreaking to see them have meltdowns like this. Freddie is such an amazing actor💕
from which season is it?
This hits so hard for me except in a different situation. I have autism and I do try my best when it comes to working with groups at school for projects but there has been mean people that would abandon me over nothing or maybe it is me. I can't really adapt to change very well so when things start changing around me that's when I get very upset and most likely have a panic attack. This still happens today with me being a 20 year old and I am almost going to graduate college with an associates. This scene made me cry very much and it got me thinking about my past experiences. Freddie Highmore is a very good actor.
I'm autistic too, I'm 29, and I still go through the same stuff as Shaun does despite being better versed in social skills and being high functioning. The 2020 lockdown was a harsh reminder of that when I had a breakdown like this that summer. Most of it gets easier to manage over time, but some things come slower than others. Shaun is someone I watch grow as a character because I like to see someone like overcome not just the autism, but the bias behind it too.
I understand. I love my brother and he is autistic and just like me. Just much more smarter and special. I am there. Mean people are just for filling spaces in hell
Everyone doesn't see this isn't just about this baby that he lost, it's about his baby too. He broke. This really hits you in the heart
I have ASD as well. It's been a while since my last meltdown, but I'll try to put the experience into words as best as I can.
It is an extreme and quick sensation of feeling overwhelmed my both the regrets of the past and the anxieties of the future.
We like routines and patterns because it is easier to predict what will happen next so we can prepare for it in our daily lives.
We can adapt, but once we do, we tend to assume that this will be a new routine that will allow us to prepare for a new future. Unfortunately, this can lead us to assume the worst of the worst possible futures. In my opinion, no human is meant to handle the dread, panic, and impending sense of doom that occurs as a result.
Murphy's case is unique due to the unpredictable nature of his profession, but we see throughout the show how he is still reliant upon routines. Additionally, he knows how problematic lies can be for him and others, so he dislikes them in general. With the death of his unborn child and the lies he received from the two people he loves most, the pain of the past told lead him to believe that his future would the same pattern. His painful past collided with his anxious future and it overwhelmed him in a matter of seconds.
Why hasn't his guy won an Emmy yet!! His performance was amazing! I had goosebumps just watching this. I felt his anger and his pain. He deserves an Emmy for this!n
It's a crime. Freddie is so amazing in this role
The fact that Freddie Highmore has to ACT breakdowns like these. I just can’t believe how he goes through these scenes, I have gone through breakdowns myself similar to these and it’s so uncomfortable when you cry to the point when Dr. Glassman has too hug him cause he’s whole mind just broke into pieces. It’s hard too watch Shaun going through this even though it’s acting
I´ve been waiting to see this scene since episode 1. Because yeah, Glassman is HIS "DAD" but writers always find a way to make him such an idiot in every season. I am glad they finally give them the opportunity to be a fam in such a powerful way.
I think this was a wake up call for him
Doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is still the wrong thing. I understand fans love Lea and love her relationship with Shaun and that’s pushing them to want this resolved quickly, but the fact of the matter is Lea broke Shaun’s trust. Why she did it doesn’t matter. Damage doesn’t care about intentions. Do I believe they can bounce back from this? More than likely. But it’s going to take time. And it should.
Seeing Shaun break down and have everything crash on top of him all at once was so painful to watch. Freddie was amazing here.
I don't like Lea. I don't like the relationship. I never had. If my autistic ran away from his job without permission to crash a car and drink until he puked I would have made sure that relationship ship ended right there. Lea does not understand autism! These meltdowns are real and they do not go away. And yes, lying triggers them.
@@jaynekranc8607 You are entitled to that opinion, but a lot of fans don’t share it. The ship has a steady following, many of which are actually upset with Shaun right now for calling off the wedding and saying maybe she should lose her job for violating ethics.
Thank you for putting it in a reasonable way without just bashing Lea. Shaun has every right to be upset with Lea. He explicitly told her not to do that. I do think they'll be OK. The writers spent four seasons building up their relationships. I do think Shaun does need to realize that his ASD does limit him and those score reflect that (but it's not an accuracy reflection on him as a doctor) and trying to act neurotypical isn't the answer.
@@ChristineTheHippie I believe Shaun was well within his rights to say if the data can’t be corrected, then Salen has to be made aware of the incorrect information. And if she were to lose her job, that would be a direct result of her own decision, and not Shaun’s fault or him punishing her.
Every comment I’ve seen so far is Shaun needs to apologize, or Shaun needs to appreciate that she did this out of love for him. They just want things to get back on track and they don’t seem to care that Lea’s actions *merit* consequences, no matter what her intentions were. This ship only works as long as both people are being loved, respected, and valued, and right now, there is no good reason for these two be be getting married because that standard is not being met.
@@Book_Dragon2562 he is within his rights. As much as I ship Shea, I still think Lea was wrong.

How has he not gotten an Emmy...such an amazing actor!!!! Love this show!!! ❤
It's intereresting that sometimes the exceptional child actors can't transition to adult careers and then you get someone like Freddie who clearly just has a gift and gets better and better and better. This is an Emmy performance IMHO.
He's an amazing actor, but personally, i think people saying someone has a gift for something and that's why they're really good at can come off as a bit dismissive. Especially when it's their job. Like people work really hard for their skills, and have passion for what they do, and that includes artists and actors. I mean obviously some learn faster than others, but just saying someone is gifted or talented like the heavens alone gave them their skills can feel like people don't acknowledge the insane effort. Nobody is simply born with their skills.
I loved the part where Shaun ripples the invitation then just looks at it all shocked, like "did I just do that?" And being confused for a second there like he forgot where he was for a second. Really showed how he was overwhelmed with emotion; grief, anger, you name it. Superb acting on Freddy's part 👌🏻
I feel so worried for him even though it's just a drama it makes wonder if someone had to go through that in real life.
I'll be honest, I'm not sure what to think. The cost cutting measures Salen put in were going to come back and be devastating but I didn't see it being this devastating. I can see some of the staff rallying behind Shaun, Glassman and Dr. Lim to push Salen out of power but it also questions where Morgan and Dr. Andrews' alliances lie as well as Dr. Park. As far as the wedding, I personally think it'll still be on but Shaun needs time as getting over something this devastating as well as her lying and altering Shaun's reviews just doesn't clear up immediately. For me, this has been one of the best midseason finales this show put on...even more than season 2. From episode 1, I always had that sneaking suspicion about Salen and what her true motives were and I think here it shows.
You got something here…definitely will have some friction between Andrew and Morgan being “friends” with Salem…. Park will most likely side with Shaun and this will jeopardize his relationship with Morgan..
Its way too good of a drama not for them to use this… predictable tho

As an autistic person, this meltdown was spot on!! I felt his emotions so deeply!! People always think we don't have empathy but for many the opposite is true! We feel too much we love deeply more than a neurotypical person could understand. And it is painful! He is trying himself because he blames him self and squeezes his head because it is all way too much. Everything has him completely overstimulated. I can't quite describe it but it's like trying to make everything stop so you can breathe… I don't have the words. For Shaun he did everything he could to save this child and they died cause the hospital screwed up. It brought back repressed memories of his own daughter passing as well as Lea lying and Glassman lying and leaving.
